Inserting Text Into SQL 2005 Database Padded With Spaces
Jan 2, 2007
I have a Detailsview with Insert and Update options connected to a SQL 2005 table with templated textboxes for input. The textboxes have maxlength set to the number of characters in each respective field in the SQL 2005 table. When text is inserted it gets padded with spaces if all the field length is not used. When you try to edit the field the cursor does not move because of the padded spaces. The End key must be pressed to find the end of the string and the padded space removed before adding edited text. I am working in VB.net. If I check the field in SQL Studio Express is shows the text I typed plus blank space for the remainder of the field.
My question is how can I add text to the textboxes without the padded spaces being added when the maxlength of the field is not used?
I have a procedure that generates some XML from a bunch of tables. Then i use BCP to export it to a file. This works just fine. Here's the sample code:
CREATE TABLE dbo.t_test (i INT, z VARCHAR(30) COLLATE DATABASE_DEFAULT) INSERT INTO t_test (i, z) SELECT1, 'Test' GO
[code]....
But recently, i wanted to add a test that calls this procedure. So, Test procedure uses INSERT / EXECUTE thingy to put XML data into a temp table to compare things. But then you get following error: "The FOR XML clause is not allowed in a INSERT statement."
DECLARE@T TABLE (x XML) INSERT INTO @t (x) EXECSPRC_EXPORT -- crashes here
So, i thought, fine, i'll wrap the FOR XML inside a sub-SQL:
CREATE PROCEDURE SPRC_EXPORT AS SELECT( SELECT* FROMt_test FOR XML PATH('root') )
And BCP call still works, BUT, now the file generated becomes 64kb instead of 1kb :) When i look into the file, it displays same XML, but the string is right-padded with a LOT of spaces.how BCP uses SET FMTONLY, OR that the "type" of result somehow gets changed when i do the wrapping.
From SSIS I need to export data to a CSV with spaces padding the end of each field before the delimited value. For example if I have three fields that are Nvarchar(10) I need it to be this:
Testing ,Test123 ,Again {end of line}
instead of this:
Testing,Test123,Again{end of line}
It's like it can do fixed width or delimited but not both. Is this possible without having to force the spaces into the data coming back from SQL? I already have the SSIS package written to export the data to CSV which works great, just need to find some way to add the spaces to the end of each column to satisfy requirements on the system being exported to. Also the commas need to be there too.
Hello friends.... I am looking for 2 things(using c#.net or vb.net and sql svr 2000) 1.convert data from sql server 2000 database (say customers table from northwinds database) to a text file(separated by commas or just plain space) 2.Insert the data from text file back to database. Can someone pls give me the detailed code to achieve this....really need this on urgent basis.......Thank You.
I am fairly new to SQL I have started to administer a system which handles carrier information for a mail order system. The logic behind the system is quite simple there are 5 or so columns in a table the first column is the first part of the postcode i.e EX15, the other columns contain which delivery services and depot numbers are associated with that postcode. It works fine at the moment.
However now the main carrier has decided that they are now going to split these postcodes so for example EX15 1* goes to a different depot than EX15 2*
I cant seem to insert EX15 1 into the first column, I get the following error:
Attempt to store duplicate value in unique column. (-155)
Is this because of the space in 'EX15 1'? Because 'EX15' already exists in that column? In which case do I need to somehow tell SQL that there is a space there?
I hope this makes sense
Below is a snap of the table with the existing EX15 postcode data
Hi. In our database, we have a Social Security Number field. We've made application upgrades and we can no longer have the dashes ( - ) between the numbers. So, I ran this update on our database to remove all the dashes. it did remove all the dashes except it put spaces in its spot:
UPDATE DefendantCase SET SSN = REPLACE(SSN, '-','')
so, i tried this query and it does nothing.
UPDATE DefendantCase SET SSN = REPLACE(SSN, ' ','')
I am loading data using SSIS 2008 from a table in SQL Server 2008 DB to excel 97 sheet pre-defined with column headers. All the columns in excel is has 'Text' format property and the columns in the SQL Server table are defined as nVarchar. One of the columns has trailing spaces in few rows in DB but after exporting to excel 97, the spaces are gone. We need to retain the whitespaces in the column values. How can we do that.
How Can I get Identitiy field from database while inserting new row in sql server 2005 compact edition.
Ex:
I am inserting row in a table through SqlQuery ("insert into ....") in which one of the field is of type Identity which generates number automatically. I want that number to pick up that number and used it in child table....
Getting 0 padded values in the columns.Hi All,I have a requirement to convert a integer to string and display it inSql server with fixed length say 3 chars. (in c, we wud use %03d inprintf)If the number is small say, 9 then it has to be displayed as 009,56 -> 056, 897-> 897, 6786 -> xxxChecked through STR and CAST functions, couldn't find any relevantparamters.if you have any ideas, please mail me.Thanks & Regards,Chandra Mohan
Ok my last formatting question. How can I insert a money value as a padded string in another table?example $1.25 gets inserted to another table as 00000125I want 8 total characters and no decimalanother example would be 4,225.99 becomes 00422599can this be done?thank you!!
Having a brain fart and can't figure this out...I have 2 databases I need to join:db1.customer.customer_no char(15) right justified, zero paddedsample customer numbers:000000000000001000000000000010000000000000234000000000012345db2.customer.customer_no varchar(20) left justified, no paddingsample customer numbers:11023412345How do I join tables on customer_no? Use cast, convert? Strip zeroes fromdb1 table? Thanks.
I fixed all the free text stuff but now I have another problem. I created a web app one page to enter data and anoter to display it. I have a multiple row text box and if you enter something with returns it it when you display the data it ignores the returns and puts everything on the same line BTW the column type is text
example
this "want to hest this out. ========================
now I am going to put in some test data and see how it comes out
finished"
will come out like this "want to hest this out.========================now I am going to put in some test data and see how it comes out finished"
Have a view that has to reference a table in another database on the same server. This isn't the problem. I am just using Databasename..tablename in the from statement. Get the results required in testing.
The problem is that in production the table name has a space character. i.e. 'accounting info' would be the table name. I have not been able to figure out the proper syntax to capture this properly to reference in the from statement.
I have tried enclosing the name in ' ', " ", [], (), {} and just about every combination I can come up with.
Any help in this would be great, and changing the databse name isn't an option at this time.
Is it possible to do a full restore of a database without restoring the full-text catalogs? At the end of each month, we restore a copy of a database for quick access to month-end data with a different name. e.g. we restore the database DBN as DBN1107. Since upgrading to SQL 2005, the restore is failing because it it trying to restore the full-text catalog.
I have an XML string that I get by using a query similar to the following....
SELECT 1 AS Tag, NULL AS Parent, NULL AS [Zip_ROOT!1!], NULL AS [Zip!2!Value!element], NULL AS [Zip!2!State!element] FROM ZipCodes UNION SELECT 2, 1, NULL, Zip, State FROM ZipCodes where id < 3 FOR XML EXPLICIT
This returns an XML string, which is very long. I need to take this string and INSERT/UPDATE to a Text column in a table.
Any kind of help in this regard will be grately appreciated.
I have an odd issue with a stored procedure using output parameters and a database text field.
I am using custom VB6 COM+ objects in the middle tier and SQL Server 2000 on the back end. The stored procedure has an int as it's first parameter; it is an output parameter which gets set to @@IDENTITY after the data is written to the tables. The last parameter is a text.
The COM+ object executes the proc; ADO 2.7 incorrectly identifies the text parameter as an adVarChar, so I explicitely convert it to an adLongVarChar when I detect that the incoming data is > 8000 characters.
The proc writes the data correctly to the database in all cases. However, when the data is > 8000 characters, SQL doesn't appear to correctly set the output variable. No errors are generated, I simply don't get any value written to the variable. I've searched through MS's documentation, but can't seem to find anything on this issue.
I fixed all the free text stuff but now I have another problem. I created a web app one page to enter data and anoter to display it. I have a multiple row text box and if you enter something with returns it it when you display the data it ignores the returns and puts everything on the same line BTW the column type is text
example
this
"want to hest this out.
========================

will come out like this
"want to hest this out.========================now I am going to put in some test data and see how it comes out finished"
Hello all, I have a question regarding importing text file data into SQL Server. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction, as my searches haven't turned up anything specific enough. I'm trying to parse a large (24MB) text file. It's a fixed-width file, with multiple columns. I need to parse this file, check if a record already exists, and then import the data into the database. But I don't need to insert every column. There's only a few columns from the file I need to insert. This parsing also needs to occur at regular intervals (daily). I looked at BULK INSERT, but I can't find an example that uses only some of the columns. Every example uses all columns, and the file is delimited, not fixed-width. Is there anything within SQL Server that can accomplish this? I haven't turned up anything that will solve my problem. The only other solution I can think of is an application that parses the file for me and inserts the data into the database. But can I schedule that application to run every night at midnight (for example) through SQL Server? I'm not too familiar with SQL Server, so I appreciate any help offered. Thanks,Jay
I have looked and looked for any information on how to insert data from a db into a text field using a stored procedure. If anyone has any helpful links or suggestions, my sanity would greatly appreciate the help.
If this is the wrong place for this question, would someone please tell me so. I am new to SQL Server and still feeling out resources. I have a few books on SQL Server but none cover this question.
I have a text file of dates and numbers that I want to insert into a table. There are way too many rows of data in the file to do this by hand.
Question == How can I essentially insert the text file into my table?
in sqlserver 2008, under edit/insert file as text, the default path is my documents/management studio/projects. Can that path be changed? I've looked under tools/options but don't see where or how. Thanks for any response!
I am running into a problem inserting large amounts of text into my table. Everything works well when I test with a few simple words but when I try to do a test with larger amounts of text (ie 35,000 characters) the appropriate field is left blank. The Insert still performs (all the other fields recieve their data, but the "Description" field is blank. I have tried this with both "text" and "ntext" datatypes. I am using a stored procedure with input parameters. As I mentioned, the query goes off flawlessly with small amounts of data (eg "Hi there!") but not with the larger amount.I check and the ntext field claims to be able to accept 1073741823 bytes of data. Is there some other thing I should consider with large amounts of text?
I have written up a grid consisting of properties and units. The way it works is we have properties, and within properties there are units. They are two seperate tables. Some properties do not have any units so in the unit reference (UN_UREF) column for those records which do not have units and are NULL I would like to insert the text 'NO UNIT'.Please see below for my SQL for the grid which works fine.
create or replace view VWC_PROPMKUNIT_TEST AS ( SELECT PR_SNAM, PR_NAME, PR_ADD1, PR_ADD2, PR_ADD3, PR_ADD4, PR_ADD5, PR_ADD6, PR_POST, PR_OWN, UN_UREF, UN_NAME, UN_GFA FROM PROP LEFT JOIN UNIT ON PR_SNAM=UN_BREF);
All I need to do now is insert 'NO UNIT' within the Unit Reference column where it is NULL.
When we insert text into field in a table, SQL SERVER apparentlyreplaces apostrophes with question marks -- is there a way to not havethis occur? We don't have this happen with the mySQL databases thatwe also support.Much help appreciated.
I have an application taht requires the use of a table. The device that this application works on, has a local memory that does not allow me to insert the 800,000 records that I need. Therefore I have two approaches:
1. To insert less records into my local memory database e.g 40,000 but not row by row, bulk insert is better. How do I do the bulk insert?
2. This is the most prefferable way: To find a way to insert all 800,000 records into a table on the storage card which is 1GB. What do you suggest? Will using threads be helpfull? Any ideas?
I use C# from VS 2005, SQL ME, compact framework 2.0 and windows 4.2.
We are trying to restore from a backup (.bak) of a sql 2005 database with full text catologs to sql 2012.
We are getting errors saying that the backup file context are different from what we are trying to restore to, even if we try to create a new database from the backup. The new database is just a test database. The source is a production database with full cataologs.
The normal restore from a bak file does not seem to work.
We dont need the full text catalogs in the new database, but cannot change settings in the source production database.
Is there a way to take a backup of the sql 2005 database without the full text cataologs being included ? , without changing setting in the source database beforehand ?
Hi, I have visual studio 2005 with the sql server express edition that is installed by default when installing vs2005. I am used to work from within vs when I want to create and work with databases for my web sites (I dont have visual manager installed). I would like to enable full text search on a table's column.
Is there an easy way to do that from within vs or is it necessary to install another copy of sql server express with advanced services as well as sql server managment studio express? How can I know if full text search is enabled?
Here is the error message that I'm getting Error string: Error opening datafile: The system cannot find the path specified. The file it's bombing out on is the text file that Im importing into one of my tables through a dts package (which is getting called by the dtsrun statement -- that is giving off this message.) If anyone would know what may be sending this message off to me let me know. Thanks in advance. RB
