Inserting TextBox Values To Database Using SqlDataSource.Insert Method

Oct 25, 2006

Hi, it is few days I posted here my question, but received no answer. Maybe the problem is just my problem, maybe I put my question some strange way. OK, I try to put it again, more simply.
 I have few textboxes, their values I need to transport to database. I set SqlDataSource, parameters... and used SqlDataSource.Insert() method. I got NULL values in the database's record. So I tried find problem by using Microsoft's sample code from address http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.sqldatasource.insert.aspx. After some changes I tried that code and everything went well, data were put into database. Next step was to separate code beside and structure of page to two separate files followed by new test. Good again, data were delivered to database. Next step: to use MasterPage, very simple, just with one ContentPlaceHolder. After this step the program stoped to deliver data to database and delivers only NULLs to new record. It is exactly the same problem which I have found in my application. The functionless code is here:
http://forums.asp.net/thread/1437716.aspx
 I cannot find any answer this problem on forums worldwide. I cannot believe it is only my problem. I compared html code of two generated pages - with maserPage and without. There are differentions in code in ids' of input fields generated by NET.Framework:
Without masterpage:
<input name="NazevBox" type="text" id="NazevBox" />
<span id="RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span>
<p>
<input name="CodeBox" type="text" id="CodeBox" />
<span id="RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span>
<p>
<input type="submit" name="Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="Button1" />
 With masterpage:
<input name="ctl00$Obsah$NazevBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_NazevBox" />
<span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span>
<p>
<input name="ctl00$Obsah$CodeBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_CodeBox" />
<span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span>
<p>
<input type="submit" name="ctl00$Obsah$Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;ctl00$Obsah$Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="ctl00_Obsah_Button1" />

In second case ids' of input fields have different names, but I hope it is inner business of NET.Framework.
There must be something I haven't noticed, maybe NET's bug, maybe my own. Thanks for any suggestion.

Error Inserting UserId In Codebehind Using SqlDataSource.insert()

Feb 9, 2006

I have a database with columnsuserOwnListsuserID uniqueidentifieruserName nvarchar100userList nvrachar100createdDateI
have created successfully a gridview controller to edit these values in
database. The Gridview data is populated by SqlDataSource.I
have also created a EmptyDataTemplate  and created a form into it.
There is only one textBox and submit button to create the First entry
to userOwnLists -table.Now I collect the value from EmptyDataTemplate textbox with id userList1 and create a codebehind logic for the submitbutton.protected void Button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)    {        TextBox listName = (TextBox)this.FindControl("listName1", GridView1.Controls);SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userId"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey;        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userName"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().UserName.ToString();        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["listName"].DefaultValue = listName.Text;        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["createdDate"].DefaultValue = DateTime.Now.ToString();        SqlDataSource1.Insert();    }The problem is now that I get error: Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:
Implicit conversion from data type sql_variant to uniqueidentifier is
not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.OK.  So I Googled a bit and found this:http://scottonwriting.net/sowblog/posts/4690.aspxMy Question is: How do I convert userId so I can insert it to database successfully?This does not work:String userId = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey.ToString();        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userId"].DefaultValue = Convert.ToString(userId);

Inserting Values And Get The Last ID Recorded To Use In Another INSERT

Sep 20, 2007

I need to insert some values into a table and after that catch the ID inserted.
I set some input parameters in stored procedure and only one to get the @id defined as output
SqlParameter paramIdPedido = new SqlParameter("@APP_IDPEDIDO", SqlDbType.Int, 4);paramIdPedido.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;cmd.Parameters.Add(paramIdPedido);
Do I have to run cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); to record first what I need and afterrun ExecuteReader: something like SqlDataReader dr = cmd.ExecuteReader();while (dr.Read()... to get the ID)
From stored procedure:
INSERT table(fields) VALUES(vars)SELECT TOP 1 @id = id FROM table ORDER BY id DESC
I must do all these steps or maybe is there anything less complex to do?
Thanks!

The Best Method Of Storing Multiple Values For A Single User Criteria In The Database ?

Mar 31, 2008

Let's say you had a User table and one of the fields was called Deceased.  It's a simple closed-ended question, so a bit value could be used to satisfy the field, if the person is dead or alive.  Let's say another field is called EyeColor.  A person can have only one eye color and thus one answer should be stored in this value, so this is easy as well.
Now, let's say I want to store all the languages that a specific user can speak.  This isn't as easy as the previous examples since it's not a yes or no or a single-value answer.  I haven't had much experience with working with databases so I've come up with two possible ways with my crude knowledge hehe.
In terms of inputting the multi-answer values, I suppose I could use a multiple-selection listbox, cascading dropdowns, etc.  Now, here are the 2 solutions that came to mind.....
1) Make a field called LanguagesSpoken in the User table.  When I process the selections the user makes on the languages he knows, I can then insert into the LanguagesSpoken field a string "English, Spanish, Czech" or IDs corresponding to the languages like "1, 5, 12" (these IDs would be referenced from a separate table I guess).  I would use commas so that later on, when I need to display a user's profile and show the user's languages, I can retrieve that long string from the LanguagesSpoken field, and parse the languages with the commas I've used.  Using commas would just be a convention I use so I would know how to parse (I could have used "." or "|" or anything else I guess) the data.
2) Forget about the LanguagesSpoken field in the User table altogether, and just make a LanguagesSpoken table.  A simple implementation would have 3 fields (primary key, userId, languageId).  A row would associate a user with a language.  So I would issue a query like "SELECT * FROM LanguagesSpoken WHERE userId=5" (where userId=5 is some user).  Using this method would free me from having to store a string with delimited values into the User table and then to parse data when I need them.  However, I'm not sure how efficient this method would be if the LanguagesSpoken table grows really large since the userIds would NOT be contiguous, the search might take a long time.  I guess I would index the userId field in the LanguagesSpoken table for quicker access?
OR, I may be going about this the wrong way and I'm way out on left field with these 2 solutions.  Is there a better way other than those 2 methods?
I haven't work extensively with databases and I'm just familiar with the basics.  I'm just trying to find out the best-practice implementation for this type of situation.  I'm sure in the real world, situations like this is very common and I wonder how the professionals code this.
Thanks in advance.

SqlDataSource+ControlParameter+Textbox

Jan 15, 2008

Hi!
I have a page (a search page) with sqldatasource, gridview and set of textboxes. The sqldatasource is using stored procedure with parameters. Using the visual wizard i'm associating the parameters with apropriate textboxes controls. It all works, like a charm.
The problem arises when I input some dangerous code in any textbox , like ' or % .
I'm having exception about unenclosed strings, generally info about the possibility of sql injection.
I thought that using ControlParameters, any Parameter in fact is sqlinjection safe, but apparently it isn't.
Does anyone know the right way of achieving my goal? It's very urgent.

Binding A SqlDataSource To A TextBox Or Label

Feb 28, 2007

I have a SQL database with 1 column in it.. it is a do not call registry for my office.  I want to make a web application so our leads can go on the web and request to be put on the do not call list.  problem is, if their number already exists, it gets a violation of primary key... Normal handling for this would be to do a select query based on user input, and if it exists in the database, tell them that, else do the insert query... Problem is, i cant seem to figure out how to bind the result of the select query to a textbox or label so i can compare the results to do that logic.  Any ideas?  This is in asp .net 2.0.  Thanks! -Dan

Setting SqlDatasource Parameters From TextBox

Feb 17, 2008

I have a sqlDatasource with 3 parameters based on the input of 3 text boxes on the page. The datasource returns sales details for a company based on a from and to date. I am attempting to set the value of the 3 parameters in the Selecting event of the datasource control but I'm not getting any data back. If I set the values literally then I get data back. Also when I step through the code I can see the 3 parameters getting their values from the textboxes and the drop down list as they should. SqlDataSource.SelectParameters Method

Apr 27, 2008

Hi,
 I am using a grid view with parameter defined in dropdown list. the asp code is:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:Pubs %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT [au_id], [au_lname], [au_fname], [state] FROM [authors] WHERE ([state] = @state)"
DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [authors] WHERE [au_id] = @au_id">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="DropDownList1" Name="state" PropertyName="SelectedValue"
Type="String" /></SelectParameters>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:Pubs %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT [au_id], [au_lname], [au_fname], [state] FROM [authors] WHERE ([state] = @state)"
DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [authors] WHERE [au_id] = @au_id">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="DropDownList1" Name="state" PropertyName="SelectedValue"
Type="String" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
 I would like to to set the parameter assignment in my VB code in Page_Load methodWhen i am using:
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters("state").DefaultValue = DropDownList1.Text
SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT [au_id], [au_lname], [au_fname], [state] FROM [authors] WHERE ([state] = @state)"I get error message saying: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Any ideas how I can set the select parameters (in my VB code) to use the dropdown list I have in my page?
Thanks,

RDA Pull Method Not Creating Tables/inserting Data

Aug 7, 2006

I can't see what is going on, this is the situation:

I call the Pull method, specify the table to be affected, the query to be used, the connection string to the remote SQL server, the tracking options (On) and the Error table. The pull method executes with no errors however, no table is ever created. I don't know why, here's what I have done so far:

I read the SQL BOOKS ONLINE help on preparing RDA, I set up the IIS virtual directory for anonymous access and on the connection string I send in the user name and password for the SQL server, I went into the SQL Server and grated access to the user name to the database that I am going to access and I made the user a db_owner.

So, according to SQL BOOKS ONLINE I have everything right however, it won't populate, so right now I am open to suggestions on how to get this to work, heres the code:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
string rdaOleDbConnectString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=<Server>;Initial Catalog=<DB>; User Id=<User>;Password=<Password>"; (it's not exactly like this, but in it has the proper values)
string connectionString = "Data Source="\Program Files\client\db\MobileDB.sdf"";

SqlCeRemoteDataAccess rda = new SqlCeRemoteDataAccess("http://10.1.1.206/mobile/sqlcesa30.dll",
connectionString);

IList _tableNames = new ArrayList();
IList _queries = new ArrayList();

############
Code that prepares tables and queries
############

for (int counter = 0; counter < _tableNames.Count; counter++)
{
rda.Pull(_tableNames[counter].ToString(), _queries[counter].ToString(), rdaOleDbConnectString, RdaTrackOption.TrackingOn, "MobileError");
}

the For loop runs with no problems but no data is ever put (or tables created) into the Mobile DB.

SELECT A Single Row With One SqlDataSource, Then INSERT One Of The Fields Into Another SqlDataSource

Jul 23, 2007

What is the C# code I use to do this?
I'm guessing it should be fairly simple, as there is only one row selected. I just need to pull out a specific field from that row and then insert that value into a different SqlDataSource.

Getting Textbox To Show All Values

Apr 15, 2007

Is there a way in rs to have a textbox more than the first value when it is dragged on the rs form when creating a report? currently when I drag a text box on the rs form, it only shows the first record on a page/form. There are twenty records on the table where the first value came from. How can I make so that twenty text boxes representing twenty records appear on twenty different pages. In other words, I am trying to build a report with a non - tabular structure that can repeat on different pages.
