I am fairly new to SQL I have started to administer a system which handles carrier information for a mail order system. The logic behind the system is quite simple there are 5 or so columns in a table the first column is the first part of the postcode i.e EX15, the other columns contain which delivery services and depot numbers are associated with that postcode. It works fine at the moment.
However now the main carrier has decided that they are now going to split these postcodes so for example EX15 1* goes to a different depot than EX15 2*
I cant seem to insert EX15 1 into the first column, I get the following error:
Attempt to store duplicate value in unique column. (-155)
Is this because of the space in 'EX15 1'? Because 'EX15' already exists in that column? In which case do I need to somehow tell SQL that there is a space there?
I hope this makes sense
Below is a snap of the table with the existing EX15 postcode data
I have a Detailsview with Insert and Update options connected to a SQL 2005 table with templated textboxes for input. The textboxes have maxlength set to the number of characters in each respective field in the SQL 2005 table. When text is inserted it gets padded with spaces if all the field length is not used. When you try to edit the field the cursor does not move because of the padded spaces. The End key must be pressed to find the end of the string and the padded space removed before adding edited text. I am working in VB.net. If I check the field in SQL Studio Express is shows the text I typed plus blank space for the remainder of the field. My question is how can I add text to the textboxes without the padded spaces being added when the maxlength of the field is not used?
i'm going nuts with this, i suppose i will crack it eventually, but i thought i'd ask around here, seems like all the smart SQL Server guys hang out here
(i'm an SQL guy, not an SQL Server guy)
how does one place 5 spaces into a CHAR(5) column? create table testzeros ( id smallint not null primary key identity , myfield char(5) ) insert into testzeros (myfield) values (' 1') insert into testzeros (myfield) values (' 11') insert into testzeros (myfield) values (' 111') insert into testzeros (myfield) values (' 1111') insert into testzeros (myfield) values ('11111') insert into testzeros (myfield) values (' ')
select id , myfield , len(myfield) as L from testzerosno matter what i do, id=6 shows up with L=0, just like an empty string
i've even tried inserting 4 spaces and a non-blank character, which enters just fine, just as you would expect, but when i update the value and replace the non-blank character with a blank, all 5 spaces collapse back to an empty string
is there some kind of server setting like SET ALL_SPACE_EQUALS_EMPTY_YOU_IDIOT to OFF or something?

Hello,This is a simple question, hopefully with a simple answer. I havean nvarchar column of length 255. In one of the rows I have thefollowing sentance - 'See the brown ball bounce'. Is it possible touse a command to remove all of the spaces in that sentance, so thatthe sentance reads 'Seethebrownballbounce'? As you can see, I am notjust interested in getting rid of the trailing and leading spaces. Thanks,Billy
I currently have a column in a table with data type char and length 500. However, not every column fills up the entire 500 length, and I would like to fill up the rest of the spaces with dots. Is there a setting in SQL to do this? I do not want to use varchar since I want a fixed length with dots at the end. Any ideas?
Hi i hv a doubt in Sql server reporting..I do generate some reports based on some criteria. In the results screen i hv empty fields based on the search i hv generated.I need to set "0" instead of blank spaces in the fields..Can any one help me?
I have a table . It has a nullable column called AccountNumber, whichis of varchar type. The AccountNumber is alpha-numeric. I want to takedata from this table and process it for my application. Before doingthat I would like to filter out duplicate AccountNumbers. I get most ofthe duplicates filtered out by using this query:select * from customerswhere AccountNumber NOT IN (select AccountNumber from customers whereAccountNumber <> '' group by AccountNumber having count(AccountNumber)[color=blue]> 1)[/color]But there are few duplicate entries where the actual AccountNumber issame, but there is a trailing space in first one, and hence thisduplicate records are not getting filtered out. e.g"abc123<white-space>" and "abc123" are considered two different entriesby above query.I ran a query like :update customers set AccountNumber = LTRIM(RTRIM(AccountNumber)But even after this query, the trailing space remains, and I am notable to filter out those entries.Am I missing anything here? Can somebody help me in making sure Ifilter out all duplicate entries ?Thanks,Rad
I am using Advantage ODBC 6.2 to connect to a Advantage Data Server to push data from a SQL table into this server. I can view the data from the ADS with DTS and I can insert data by using "Insert into TempTable ("Last Name","First Name") values ('test','test)" from a Execute SQL Statement. The issue is when I build up a DTS package to pull from SQL into the Advantage ODBC, I get a "missing closing ")"" error. I have narrowed it down to the column names in the destination table having spaces (Last Name, First Name, and a bunch of others. DBA 101 here). How do I beat this?
I have tried editing the destination column names in disconnected edit by adding the double quotes but get a "Column Name '"Last Name"' not found" error. Wrapping them with [] doesn't work. I think this is a limit on Advantage.
When I try to use Advantage OLE DB, I get an 'Ace32.dll must be newer then the other dll" error. I am afraid of upgrading Ace32.dll and not break other things.
So with this said my two questions:
How do I get the destniation column names wrapped in double quotes when using transformations?
or
Is there a way I can do an Insert into Advantage connection(column names) values (Select Values from SQL Server connection)?
I am loading data using SSIS 2008 from a table in SQL Server 2008 DB to excel 97 sheet pre-defined with column headers. All the columns in excel is has 'Text' format property and the columns in the SQL Server table are defined as nVarchar. One of the columns has trailing spaces in few rows in DB but after exporting to excel 97, the spaces are gone. We need to retain the whitespaces in the column values. How can we do that.
I am trying to write a script to insert more than one column but the script I am making only inserts the column in the second line and I dont know why. In my code below, columnB is added to the table, but not columnA. I am stumped My sql is: <CODE> Alter table [dbName].[dbo].[tableName] Add columnA bit Default 0 Not NullAlter table [dbName].[dbo].[tableName] Add columnB bit Default 0 Not Null </CODE> thanks for your help.
I'm trying to INSERT into an Sql db column the User Name (Login Name) from a login to my website. So the insertparameters statement would be? <insertparameters> <asp:??????? </insertparameters> Thank you for any help you can offer.
I have a temporary table into which I insert bulk data from a stored procedure output. It will be easy for me if the temptable can have a column with sequential numbers 1,2,3,4,. I could not figure out a way to do it. This is the stripped down sql what I have in the stored procedure. insert into temptable select name, email, date from usertable where condition = xyz. I tried auto increment column with seed 1, increment 1. But if I delete and insert again it does not start from 1. Is there any way to accompolish this? It will make the front-end code very simple.
hi, In the below code, i am trying to insert the identity value into the 2nd column of the Symp_Quote table. Schema of the table Symp_Quote is as follows.
1st column data is coming from the select statement. but for 2nd column i have to insert identity or some unique value. to do that i was trying withe the following code, but it failed.
INSERT INTO Symp_Quote ( QuoteRevision_ID, DocumentSeq, DocumentDisplayName ) SELECT S.QuoteRevision_ID, IDENTITY (INT,1,1) AS DocumentSeq, T.Name, FROM Symp S INNER JOIN Trilogy T ON SQR.tril_gid = FQR.tril_gid
I'm trying to perform an insert on a table from another table, but the fieldnames are different. The data is similar, but there are less fields as well. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? All the material I've read on the Internet so far pertaining to Insert statements, has all the column names matching up.
Is there a way to insert multiple values into a single column based on various "tests". For example, I want to check a sales_order table and flag all new orders coming in against previous orders placed that were determined to be fraudulent. If I were to set up i.e. five different tests(i.e. check email, credit_card number etc. against previous fraud orders), then there would be the possibility that any given order can be flagged 1 to 5 times. I want to record all of these tests within the same column if possible. Therefore the output may look something like the following:
order_number fraud_score 1234567890 a,b,d 5432109876 e 2345678901 null 3455607983 a,b,c,d,e
I was considering adding five additional columns to the table and running five different update steps, but this doesn't appear very scalable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance- trevorb
In MySQL it's simple to insert new columns in specific locations in a table like this
sql Code:
Original - sql Code
alter table foo add column bar integer not null default 0 after baz
ALTER TABLE foo ADD COLUMN bar integer NOT NULL DEFAULT 0 AFTER baz
But attempting to do the same thing in MSSQL fails with a syntax error on the word "after." I can insert columns in MSSQL but only if they are added to the end. I looked at the Microsoft insert documentation here but don't see any way to replicate the above MySQL command.
Is there any way to do this in MSSQL? Or do I have to completely recreate all my tables from scratch?

I need to put .doc data into a varbinary column for full text searching. I have created the db and columns but am unsure as to how to insert the varbinary data. I have found some discussions about inserting images but nothing explicitly on .doc files. Can anyone suggest resources or sample code?
Hi there, newbie here. I'm building a web application that allows for tagging of items, using ASP.NET 2.0, C# and SQL Server. I have my USERS, ITEMS and TAGS separated out into three tables, with an intersection table to connect them. Imagine a user has found an item they are interested in and is about to tag it. They type their tag into a textbox and hit Enter. Here's what I want to do: I want to search the TagText column in my TAGS table, to see if the chosen tag is already in the table. If it is, the existing entry will be used in the new relationship the user is creating. Thus I avoid inserting a duplicate value in this column and save space. If the value is not already in the column, a new entry will be created. Here's where I'm up to: I can type a tag into a textbox and then feed it to a query, which returns any matches to a GridView control. Now I'm stuck... I imagine I have to use "if else" scenario, but I'm unsure of the code I'll have to use. I also think that maybe ADO.NET could help me here, but I have not yet delved into this. Can anyone give me a few pointers to help me along? Cheers!
