First, I'm very new to SSIS, so forgive any stupid questions.
I'm trying to normalize some data by creating rows in a dimension table as I find new values in the original table.
My first thought is to use a Lookup to replace string values with id's to the Dimension table, and when the Lookup fails, insert the value into the Dimension table with a new key.
Does that make sense? This would be relatively easy to do with TSQL, but surely there is a way to do this in SSIS.
I have some troubles getting done a lookup... data i get from a legacy system has to be cleaned up and split up into normalized form. i get invoice data and want to split up invoices into a separate table as customers. therefore i lookup if the customer of the current line is not already in my newly created customer-table. if it isn't there (error output of lookup transformation) i insert it into the customer-table.
The problem is that after the customer is inserted into the customer-table, it still is not found by the lookup transform because the lookup uses caching to hold the reference table (and so is the exact same customer inserted again and again and again). Is there any way to disable caching and let the lookup transformation do a select for every new row it gets? or at least refilling the cache if some event happens?
Maybe someone here can help me out: I have a Kimball type II dimension, where i track changes in a hierarchy. Each row has a RowStartDate and RowEndDate property to indicate from when to when a certain row should be used.
Now i want to load facts to that table. So each fact will have a certain date associated with it that i can use to lookup the right Id (a certain SourceId can have mulitiple integer Ids when there are historic changes) and then load the facts.
Is there a building block I can use for that? I could do this with SQL scripts but the client would prefer to have as much as possible done in SSIS. The Lookup transformation will only let me specify an equal (inner join where A=B) join, but i need equal for one column (SourceId) and then >= and <= (RowStart and RowEnd) to find the right row version.
I have set a common lookup + insert dataflow. but I'm having a problem when the business key comes duplicated in the source file. This file has transactions and each transaction has a transaction code which represents what kind of transaction it is. So in the same file I can have 2 or more transactions with the same transaction code.
I have a dimension table wich stores kinds of transactions with a business and surrogate(identity) key.
The lookup sends through the error path every record it doesn't find its business key. but since I may have 2 or more transactions with the same business key in the same source the lookup sends them every time so I end up with duplicated business keys.
I have tried setting the max insertion commit size to 1 but it doesn't work. The look up won't find the new business keys.
When i add a dimension to the cube dimension without any relation in my dimension usage to any measure group my units are going down. However when i remove the dimension from the cube am getting the correct values.
We did some "at scale" fuzzy lookup tests today and were rather disappointed with the performance. I'm wanting to know your experience so I can set my performance expectations appropriately.
We were doing a fuzzy lookup against a lookup table with 25 million rows. Each row has 11 columns used in the fuzzy lookup, each between 10-100 chars. We set CopyReferenceTable=0 and MatchIndexOptions=GenerateAndPersistNewIndex and WarmCaches=true. It took about 60 minutes to build that index table, during which, dtexec got up to 4.5GB memory usage. (Is there a way to tell what % of the index table got cached in memory? Memory kept rising as each "Finished building X% of fuzzy index" progress event scrolled by all the way up to 100% progress when it peaked at 4.5GB.) The MaxMemoryUsage setting we left blank so it would use as much as possible on this 64-bit box with 16GB of memory (but only about 4GB was available for SSIS).
After it got done building the index table, it started flowing data through the pipeline. We saw the first buffer of ~9,000 rows get passed from the source to the fuzzy lookup transform. Six hours later it had not finished doing the fuzzy lookup on that first buffer!!! Running profiler showed us it was firing off lots of singelton SQL queries doing lookups as expected. So it was making progress, just very, very slowly.
We had set MinSimilarity=0.45 and Exhaustive=False. Those seemed to be reasonable settings for smaller datasets.
Does that performance seem inline with expectations? Any thoughts to improve performance?
I'm working with an existing package that uses the fuzzy lookup transform. The package is currently working; however, I need to add some columns to the lookup columns from the reference table that is being used.
It seems that I am hitting a memory threshold of some sort, as when I add 3 or 4 columns, the package works, but when I add 5 columns, the fuzzy lookup transform fails pre-execute:
Pre-Execute Taking a snapshot of the reference table Taking a snapshot of the reference table Building Fuzzy Match Index component "Fuzzy Lookup Existing Member" (8351) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0x8007007A.
These errors occur regardless of what columns I am attempting to add to the lookup list.
I have tried setting the MaxMemoryUsage custom property of the transform to 0, and to explicit values that should be much more than enough to hold the fuzzy match index (the reference table is only about 3000 rows, and the entire table is stored in less than 2MB of disk space.
Say I want to lookup a value in another dataset, but there is a grouping that requires you to know what the values for each level is in order to get to the correct detail record.  Can you still use the lookup function with more than one field to compare against? So for example
Department \___SalesPerson     \___Measure
I want to be able to add a new row at the Measure level, but lookup each field from another dataset. In order to do that I will need the Department AND SalesPerson values to do the lookup, but I dont think the Lookup function will let us do that will.
Actually this is in regard to SCD Type 2 Dimension, Scenario is like that I am moving Fact table from some old source and I have dimensionA description value in fact which I want to replace with appropriate id from Dimension Table and that Dimension table is SCD Type 2 based on StartDate and EndDate and Fact Table doesn't contains direct date value rather there is timeId in Fact so to update the value in Fact table I have to Join Time Dimension table and other Dimension Table to replace fact Description with proper Id.
I am doing a lookup that requires mapping 2 columns in the column mapping section. When I do this, I get the error "Row yielded no match during lookup" . The SQL that I captured in SQL profiler does find the record when I run it in Management Studio. I have already tried trimming everything to no avail.
Why is this happening?
I tried enabling memory restrictions but then I my package hangs and I get a SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.log file with the following logged:
Need some help building a query that does the following :
I have 2 Time Dimensions ; Time (Transdate) and ClosedDate (ClosedDate)
In my report/query, if [Time].CurrentMember = [Time].[YMD].[YMD].[2006].[200610].[20061031] I want to FILTER out all ClosedDate < [ClosedDate].[YMD].[YMD].[2006].[200610].[20061031]
Both Time Dimensions are Year -> Month -> Day and have the same Members.
I have every option available, using calculated Members and/or Measures to do this.
The report I'm creating is Aging of Receivables : Balance / 30 days / 60 days / etc.. But for the Aging, I need to filter like explained above.
I have a Conditional Split with 3 outputs. On the first output I have a lookup, when I execute the package I have 56 rows going through the Conditional Split, all rows are then going to the 2nd and 3rd output but the lookup on the first output generates an error "Row yielded no match during lookup".
I don't understand why the lookup is generating an error while there is no row going through it.
I am designing a ssis package,This is intends to mine text data(Data extracted from websites). Term lookup/Term extraction has been used as tools for mining. I have lookup terms defined with me for reference table, but the main problem lie in extracting the nearby text/number/charcters to these lookup terms during mining. For example : I found noun "Email" 200 (frequency score) times in my text,Now I want to extract nearby email address(this is also true for PhoneNumber,Address attributes also).so how can I achieve this with SSIS. If u have some idea/suggestion to carry out this challenge with or without Term Extraction/Term Lookup, plz do write here.
I've built SSIS package and made a job to execute it automatically but it always returns an error. The job returns OK but when we looked at the Log File viewer, it conatins this error log :
Key not valid for use in specified state
Failed to decrypt protected XML node "DTS Password" with error
What's wrong with the package ? Thanks in advance.
I wrote an application using Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 which uses a SQL Express .mdf file, included in the project, for the database. After installing Visual Studio 2005 RC and the SQL Express that comes with it (I followed all of the uninstall instructions first) I can no longer add a SQL Express database to any of my projects, nor can I open the SQL Express database in my original project. When I try either of these tasks, I get the "Failed to generate user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I read the thread which dealt with this error, and changed the connection string for the database file that had worked before to User Instance = false. The moment I click Test Connection or OK, I get the error: "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:<path to project>EngSQL.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (<path to project> is actually a full path, I didn't want to type the whole thing out. :) ). A search for this error turns up a solution of setting User Instance = false, which puts me in a catch 22 position.
I have log shipping set up between 2 SQL 2000 SP1 Servers on Win 2000. The db is small 10 meg, and when the restore job on the backup server fails I am getting "sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed." as the message, the maint paln on the primary server show no error. Anyone seen this before? The restore has worked 3 out of 5 times
Many a times see the below error in SQL Error log.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: ]
Is this something to do here?
Note: If I run the below statement I know that the SQL Error log entry will go off, but wanted to know the real significance of this error?
CREATE LOGIN [NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON] FROM WINDOWS
I am administering several SQL Servers running SQL Server 2005 SP2 Build 3042. I have a common maintenance plan that runs on each of the servers. The maintenance plan runs fine on all the servers except for one. On the one server the Database Integrity check fails with the following error:
Check Database integrity on Local server connection Databases: <list of databases> Include indexes Task start: 2008-02-21T00:05:42. Task end: 2008-02-21T00:05:46. Failed0) Alter failed for Server €˜XYZ€™
I created a test maintenance plan to just do the integrity check and selected one database only and this also failed with the same error message. I ran this test maintenance plan and configured it for each of the databases in question and it failed each time. If I run the DBCC manually against the databases they all report fine.
I read some of the post that talked about the €œAllow Updates€? being set incorrectly but that does not apply to my problem since my configured and run values are set to 0.
I have a re-indexing stored procedure, yester day night it got failed "Executed as user: CONNECTSRVmyadmin. sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed." what may be the reason..

I using Locale (People's Republic of China) and code page of 936 (Simplied Chinese GBK) with header row delimiter {CR}{LF}.
I am using flat file import method.
Whenever the server process the Column 42 with value "11,Nanjing Rd.W, China" which contain 'comma' or '.' it will hit error importing with above message. When i manually change the column value to non comma or '.' (11 Nanjing Rd W China) in the flat file it is ok.
I am using SQL server 2005.
Please advise what need to be done to avoid this error ?
Thanks in advance and any idea or suggestion is very much appreciated as i have try to solve this issue for over a week but still not able to find any answer on it.
I am running the Sept CTP. I have created a SSIS package that pulls data from a text file and inserts into a database. When I run the package on the DB server it runs fine. I have moved the package the the web server (we are attempting to kick off the package from a web site) and we get connections errors. We are running the package using dtexec from the command line.

I am trying to insert data into two different tables. I will insert into Table 2 based on an id I get from the Select Statement from Table1. Insert Table1(Title,Description,Link,Whatever)Values(@title,@description,@link,@Whatever)Select WhateverID from Table1 Where Description = @DescriptionInsert into Table2(CategoryID,WhateverID)Values(@CategoryID,@WhateverID) This statement is not working. What should I do? Should I use a stored procedure?? I am writing in C#. Can someone please help!!
when i right click and execute the package from the Management Studio, it runs fine, everytime. When i schedule a job to execute it, it fails, everytime.
"The package execution failed. The step failed."
i have made sure that the package and job ran using credentials with more than enough access to everything. Still, with no luck. PLEASE! I am at my wits ends here, and the boss is getting antsey...
Im trying to installed SQL SP1 and I get 'cancelled' status on the Database Services product.
If I open the SQL9_Hotfix_KB913090.log I see a bunch of 'Failed to read" errors. Im not very good at debugging SQL Logs, could you please assists me or tell me where to look?

As I mentioned in my previous post, my "real" case is a cube with 79 dimensions, most of which virtual, have been added for convenience.
Think for instance about a time dimension... Wouldn't it be nice to get a matrix with years horizontally, months vertically and displaying say the number of order you had for each cell in the resulting grid. Ok, maybe you can do this with MDX but not in Excel, unless you create virtual dimensions for the Year and Month levels.
That's all good, but as it is, in my real case, I end up with four date dimensions for which I have to provide:
YQMD (Year, Quarter, Month & Day) hirarchized dimension YWD (Year, Week, Day) YQMD (Fiscal calendar) Year Quarter Month Week Day (as 1, .. 31) Week Day (for periodicity analysis over a week's time) Date (as individual day - this is the backbone for the virtual dimensions)
It turns out this makes 40 dimensions by itself. For the sake of it, I grouped them by 4 hierarchies, although I've seen no specific functionality off of this in the data browser or Excel, so it really seems to be only for "show".
Now in my previous post I explained how I "spread" my session count to calculate a conversion rate. Given the number of dimensions I have (very high segmentation at the order level, very limited segmentation at the session/visit level), this means my calculated cell formula looks like this (hold your breath, it's ugly):
If you read all this, you can see already the cryptic dimension names like "FRD", "FSD" and so forth... that's because with the real names ("First Refund Date", "First Ship Date", the query processor errored out... visibly there is a limit in the size of the formulas you can post!
Is there no other way to achieve this result? Basically I mean to say: if the session count is not defined at your level along this dimension, go to the root of the dimension to get the value there, this along a slew of dimensions, many of which are inherently dependent because of the usage of virtual dimensions (therefore if I wish to go to the root of my "First Refund Date" for instance, I wish to do so along all sub-dimensions... Heck, as far as I'm concerned this is conceptually only ONE dimension, just with various views upon it...
Using hierachies I was sort of hoping for the ability to have something like: [FRD].[All Hierachies].[All]
Am I just asking for too much or do I just not know (quite probable) the magic keyword that can do this?
Where this is becoming quite critical is that I actually have a calculated cell that goes as follows (abridged):
SubCube: similar as before
Calculation: [Measures].[Order Count]*CalculationPassValue((...set of all un-tied dimension roots..., [Measures].[Distributed Marketing Cost])/CalculationPassValue((...set of all un-tied dimension roots..., [Measures].[Order Count])
Now the purpose of this is to distribute external costs at the order level. In short, say that you know you spent $10,000 globally promoting a specific group of websites in commission money (you pay $1 for each order). This formula allows me to get that a specific website, with 20 orders incurred an additional marketing cost of $20. That's actually the object of my next thread's question (spreading a multiplication through the aggregations)
For the purpose of this thread I am just concerned about the size of my formulas. Renaming the dimensions seemed to "buy" me some margin and I was actually quite surprised to find that the formula still fitted in, and works, but it is only a matter of time until I have to add more dimensions and the whole thing blows up in my face. Adittionally this is obviously not pleasant to look at and maintain.
I am trying to make a time dimension in analysis services. Is it possible to include the hours of a day in the dimension ? Is necessarily the day level the lowest of the hierarchy?
