Inserting To Multiple Tables In SQL Server 2005 That Use Identity Specification

Feb 20, 2007

Hi, I am having a bit of hassle with trying to enter details to multiple tables in SQL Server 2005.
I have four tables, an

Attendance Table (AttendanceID(PK Identity specific), MembershipNo, Date)
Resistance Table (ResistId(PK Identity specific), Weight , Reps, Sets)
Aerobics Tables(AerobicsID(PK Identity specific), MachineID, Intensity, Time)
and a linking table for all of them.... ExerciseMaster(AttendanceID,ResistanceID,AerobicsI D)

My problem is that I can insert data to each specific table by itself using seperate insert statements.....eg....

//insert an attendance record to the attendance table
string userID;

userID = Session["User"].ToString();

SqlDataSource pgpDataSource = new SqlDataSource();
pgpDataSource.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionStringLogin"].ToString();

pgpDataSource.InsertCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text;
pgpDataSource.InsertCommand = "INSERT INTO [Attendance] ([MembershipNo], [Date]) VALUES (@MembershipNo, @Date)";
pgpDataSource.InsertParameters.Add("MembershipNo", userID);
pgpDataSource.InsertParameters.Add("Date", txtVisitDate.Text);

int RowsAffected = 0;

try
{
RowsAffected = pgpDataSource.Insert();
}

catch (Exception ex)
{
Server.Transfer("~/Problem.aspx");
}

finally
{
pgpDataSource = null;
}

//insert an aerobics record into the aerocibs table

SqlDataSource pgpDataSource = new SqlDataSource();
pgpDataSource.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionStringLogin"].ToString();

pgpDataSource.InsertCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text;
pgpDataSource.InsertCommand = "INSERT INTO [Aerobics] ([MachineID], [Intensity], [ExerciseTime]) VALUES (@MachineID, @Intensity, @ExerciseTime)";

pgpDataSource.InsertParameters.Add("MachineID", rower.ToString());
pgpDataSource.InsertParameters.Add("Intensity", txtRowerLevel.Text);
pgpDataSource.InsertParameters.Add("ExerciseTime", txtRowerTime.Text);

int RowsAffected = 0;

try
{
RowsAffected = pgpDataSource.Insert();
}

catch (Exception ex)
{
Server.Transfer("~/Problem.aspx");
}

finally
{
pgpDataSource = null;
}
//same code as above for the resistance table

However, i am facing the problem where this does not populate the link table(ExerciseMaster) with any information as i am unable to write the relevant IDs into the table that have been auto generated by SQL Server for each of the subTables.
I have read several forums where they recommend using something called @@IDENTITY but i have no idea how or where to use this in order to fill my exercise table...
Any help would be so much appreciated.... Also, hopefully what i have said all makes sense and someone will be able to help me...oh and one more thing...this is an ASP.NET page coding in C#
Cheers

Inserting Data Into A Row With An Identity Specification

May 5, 2008

I am trying to build a Windows application using: Windows XP Pro ; VS Pro 2005, C# and SQL2005.

I have a database table as follows:
eg
1) myGameRecency which contains columns : GameId (identity specification column/primary key/not null), Date (not null), [1], [2], [3], [4]

Using the myGameRecencyAllBalls table ---

I wish to insert a date into a new row but have not been able to determine how to with the identity specification on the GameId column.

Can anyone please assist?
Thank you.

sqlCmd.CommandText = "DECLARE @date datetime SET @date = '" + Date +

"DECLARE @lastRowGameId int " +

"DECLARE lastrow_gameidcursor CURSOR SCROLL FOR " +

"(SELECT GameId FROM " + DBGameName.ToString() + "RecencyAllBalls) " +

"OPEN lastrow_cursor " +

"FETCH LAST FROM lastrow_gameidcursor INTO @lastRowGameId " +

"' INSERT INTO " + DBGameName.ToString() + "RecencyAllBalls.Date VALUES (@date) WHERE GameId = @lastrow_gameidcursor + 1";

How To Set The Identity Specification For A Primary Key Using A Script, Instead Of SQL Server Management Studio?

May 7, 2008

If I right click on a primary key in SQL Server management studion, I can set the identity specification for a primary keyId so that it is indexible. I do this by setting the properties for "Is Identity", "Identity Increment", and "Identity Seed". This is wonderful, but I have been asked to perform this using a script instead of the SQL server GUI/Sql Server management studio. Is this possible? Does anyone know how to do this? If so, can you show me how?

Identity Specification

Jul 12, 2007

Hi,
How do I determine what the next "id" will be in a collumn where the Identity Specification is turned on with Identity Increment?
I have two tables, the one contains product information and the other is a photo album. When I create a new product, then I automatically create an associated photo album. It all works fine, but I have found some problems after using this setup for a while to manage products.
For example, say I have created 10 products (id's 1 to 10) , and then I decide to remove the last 5 products from the list. The next time I add a new product, it will be product number 6, but the id will be 11 (seeing that the id's will always be unique). How do I determine what the next Identity value will be seeing that the actual last id might not be the last one that was allocated?

Identity Specification

May 29, 2008

I am not very clear about the use of 'identity specification properties'. There does not seem to be a great use of identity increments and seeds, it seems something that saves manual work, but to a very little extent
Anyone willing to shed some light?

Identity Specification Limit

Jan 14, 2007

what happens when a column marked as Identity Specification reaches the limit? for example, I have some code tables using tinyints as keys, the actual number of entries will be 20 or so but there is some volatility, so eventually the 255 limit will be reached, what happens then?

the same thing applies to ints or bigints used as keys, eventually the database must run out of numbers

information will be appreciated

Inserting Values Into Multiple Tables

Jan 25, 2008

Hi All,     am new to sql server in my application I am having one Asp.net web page, the user has to enter values for 5 fields(Empno,Empname,salary,deptno,deptname) in that web page and for that i created two tables in sql serverEmp Table- empno(primary key),empname,salaryDept Table- Deptno(primary key),empno(Foreign key ),Deptname(with some check constraint.) After the user enter all the values in the Asp.net web page now i want to store data into database for that i wrote the following stored procedure...create procedure usp_EmpDept  @empno integer,  @empname varchar(15),  @salary money,  @deptno integer,  @deptname varchar(10)  As    Insert into emp(empno,empname,salary)values(@empno,@empname,@salary)  Insert into dept(deptno,Empno,deptname)values(@deptno,@empno,@deptname)   but the problem is whenever some constaint violation for eg. if some check constraint violation in Dept table its inserting the values in the Emp table only, but my requirement is,  It must enter into both tables if there is no constaraint violation otherwise it has to ignore both the tables.  And also please suggest is there any better way to insert values into two tables other than using the stored procedure Any help will be greatly appreciated..Thanks,Vision..

Inserting Data Into Multiple Tables In 1 Transaction

Feb 7, 2007

Hello everyone, My web application uses SQL Server database and I am connecting via standard SqlConnection object and running stored procedures using SqlCommand object. In one of my page, I have data coming from 2 different tables. Now , data from 1 table comes as only single record. But from other table it comes as multiple records. Meaning, data that I read as 1 record, goes to different textbox and dropdown controls on page. Data that comes in multiple rows, I am binding that data with DataGrid. Now, in aspx page data from both table can be updated and on aspx page I only need to provide a single save button. Now, I am not sure how to save/insert/update a single row in 1 table and multiple rows in another table in 1 transaction. I thought of stored procedure. But I don't think its straightforward with stored procedures since table with multiple records, I am not sure how to pass all the records in stored procedure's arguments.Is there any way that I can control whole transaction in ASP .NET? Thanks,Ujjaval

Inserting From Datas In One Table From Multiple Tables

Hi guys,I have a problem with my query. What i want to happen is to populate my table EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS (Docownerid, CurrentSentDate, LastSentDate, detailsID, GeneralRemarks) using the datas from the two different tables EV_NOTIFICATIONHEADER and EV_DOCDETAILS.I tried to create some a query but im having a error. The problem is once i insert the data from datas to the columns Docownerid, CurrentSentDate, LastSentDate the datas are stored in the database and when i tried to insert the remaining columns TO EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS detailsID, GeneralRemarks getting the datas from EV_DOCDETAIL it creates a new set of records in the database. Meaning it doesn't update the records in the table EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS but it creates a new set of records.here's my code:INSERT INTO EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS (Docownerid, CurrentNoticeSentDate, LastNoticeSentDate) SELECTDocownerid, CurrentSentDate, LastSentDateFROMEV_NOTIFICATIONHEADERINSERT INTO EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS (detailsID,GeneralRemarks) SELECTdetailsID,GeneralRemarksFROMEV_DOCDETAIL   Any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Inserting Data Into Multiple Related Tables

Jun 18, 2007

Hey guys up until now i've only inserted data into a single table. Now I have a form that collects information over a span of three forms. Each form has a table related to it and these three tables are related to each other.

What I want to know is:
1)How do you go abouts inserting data into multiple related tables that have constraints on them?

2)Would you use a stored procedure in an instance like this?

3)At what stage would you execute the sql queries. I assume you do this once you have collected all the required information as opposed to: Enter info into form1, submit form1 data to database... enter info into form2, submit form2 data into database etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Say for instance I have three related tables.

table1
------
tbl1_id
tbl1_data1
tbl1_data2

table2
------
tbl2_id
tbl2_data1
tbl2_data2

table3
------
tbl3_id
tbl3_data1
tbl3_data2

table1 has a one-to-many relationship with table2
table3 has a one-to-one relationship with table2

Problems With Identity Specification - Deleting Rows

Apr 6, 2006

First of all, I'm new to the forums, and I'm still getting started with VBEE and SQL.

I'm building a simple Windows Application that has a SQL Database with three tables, related to each other. In all of them I need to set one column as a simple index for the rows (1, 2, 3... etc), to work as a PK and relate to the other tables' FKs.

I've set the property Identity Specification of the column to Yes, and added some rows of data for testing. If you just keep adding rows, the PK columns work fine, but if you start deleting rows, the numbering gets fragmented, and the relations between the tables lose integrity.

I've tried the MSDN Online Help topics, but they just tell you this:

If an identity column exists for a table with frequent deletions, gaps can occur between identity values. If you want to avoid such gaps, do not use the identity property.

So, my questions are: is there another way around this problem? How to number rows automatically and re-number them when a row is deleted, and keep the table relations working? It has anything to do with constraints?

Sorry if my question was already answered, I really couldn't find anything like my problem searching the forums. Thanks in advance.

(and also, sorry for the bad english... )

Multiple Tables, Inserts, Identity Columns And Database Integrity

Apr 30, 2008

Hi all,
I am writing a portion of an app that is of intensely high online eCommerce usage. I have a question about identity columns and locking or not.
What I am doing is, I have two tables (normalized), one is OrderDemographics(firstname,lastname,ccum,etc) the other is OrderItems. I have the primary key of OrderDemographics as a column called 'ID' (an Identity Integer that is incrementing). In the OrderItems table, the 'OrderID' column is a foreign key to the OrderDemographics Primary Key column 'ID'.
What I have previously done is to insert the demographics into OrderDemographics, then do a 'select top 1 ID from OrderDemographics order by ID DESC' to get that last ID, since you can't tell what it is until you add another row....
The problem is, there's up to 20,000 users/sessions at once and there is a possiblity that in the fraction of a second it takes to select back that ID integer and use it for the initial OrderItems row, some other user might have clicked 'order' a fraction of a second after the first user and created another row in OrderDemographics, thus incrementing the ID column and throwing all the items that Customer #1 orders into Customer #2's order....
How do I lock a SQL table or lock the Application in .NET to handle this problem and keep it from occurring?
Thanks, appreciate it.

Inserting Rows Into Remote Server With Identity

Apr 2, 2008

I am having troubles trying to copy some rows from a table on my local computer to a table on a remote SQL Server 2005 that is being hosted by one of thos web hosting companies. The problem is that the table has an identity column. I first tried using the the following command:

SET IDENTITY_INSERT [remoteservername].Library2005.dbo.tblLanguages ON

but that results in the error:

Msg 8103, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Table 'remoteservername.Library2005.dbo.tblLanguages' does not exist or cannot be opened for SET operation.

I read in another topic, that I should change this into the following:

EXECUTE [remoteservername].Library2005.dbo.sp_executesql N'SET IDENTITY_INSERT dbo.tblLanguages ON'

That command executes without error, but the problem is that I cannot perform the actual insert, because it is not within the execute statement. In other words, the following doesn't work:

EXECUTE [remoteservername].Library2005.dbo.sp_executesql N'SET IDENTITY_INSERT dbo.tblLanguages ON'
INSERT INTO [remoteservername].Library2005.dbo.tblLanguages
(colLangID, colEnglish, colGerman, colSpanish)
SELECT colLangID, colEnglish, colGerman, colSpanish FROM tblLanguages

This results in the error:

Msg 7344, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' could not INSERT INTO table '[remoteservername].[Library2005].[dbo].[tblLanguages]' because of column 'colLangID'. The user did not have permission to write to the column.

The remote server is linked correctly on my end via the sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin. Is there any way to force the remote server to turn IDENTITY_INSERT ON permanently and then let me execute as many INSERTS as I want and then turn it back OFF?

Import And Export Wizard: Transferring Multiple Tables From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000

Jun 15, 2007

Hi!

I just used the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy 50+ tables from SS05 to SS2K.

I found that the wizard created a package that I could not figure out how to edit, e.g., to change whether or not it had to CREATE a table, or just use an existing one. (I created some problems by manually editing the receiving table names to be ones that already existed -- but the original names it had did not exist, so it knew it had to create them. What I should have done, and eventually ended up doing, was scroll through my list of tables in the "receiving" box; I just figured editing the name would be faster, not realizing what problems I would create for myself.)

Anyhow, now that I see the complex package that the wizard creates, with a LOOP over the 50+ tables, I would like to know how/where in the package it is storing the information about the tables to copy.

Basically the wizard creates the following Control Flow tab entries (in processing sequence order):

an Execute SQL Task: NonTransactableSql
an Execute SQL Task: START TRANSACTION
a Sequence Container: Transaction Scoping Sequence, which contains
an Execute SQL Task: AllowedToFailPrologueSql
an Execute SQL Task: PrologueSql
a Foreach Loop Container, which contains
a Transfer Task with an icon I did not notice in the Toolbox
an Execute Package Task: Execute Inner Package
an Execute SQL Task: EpilogueSql
an "on success" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: COMMIT TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: PostTransaction Sql
an "on failure" arrow to
an Execute SQL Task: ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
an Execute SQL Task: CompensatingSql

Where, and how, can I look within this package to see the details about the tables I am transferring? I see that one of the Connection Managers is "TableSchema.XML" -- but it points to a temporary file on my hard drive, that I presume is populated by the package. Where does it get its information?

This is certainly much more complex than the package I would have written, based on my limited knowledge of SSIS. I would have been inclined to create 50+ Data Flow tasks, one for each table.

So now I'm trying to understand why the Wizard created this more-complex package.

Any help will be appreciated, including references to non-Microsoft books/websites/etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, All:Please help. I use sql server as back end and Access 2003 as front end(everything is DAO).A table on SQL server has an identity column as the key.We have trouble on adding records to this table using the following SQL.strSQL = "INSERT INTO myTableOnSQLServer (A, B, C, D, E) SELECT A, B, C, D,E FROM myTableonAccessLocal"db.execute strSQLThe schema of the table "myTableOnSQLServer" and the schema of the table"myTableonAccessLocal" are all the same except that the "myTableOnSQLServer"has an identity column (ID). The key of the "myTableOnSQLServer" is "ID" andthe table "myTableonAccessLocal" does not have a key.When we try to run the query, it gives errors indicating the key is violatedor missing.Should I figure out the autonumber for it first and then add to the SQLserver table?Many thanks,HS

Got An Error When Trying To Import Multiple Tables From One SQL Server 2005 Database To Another

Oct 1, 2007

We just upgraded from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. In the past, when I ran the import/export wizard to copy multiple tables from one database to another with SQL Server 2000, I had no problem. Now when I used the import/export wizard to copy multiple tables with SQL Server 2005, I kept getting an error. For example, when copied three tables, the first table might be copied fine and I got an error with the second table and the whole thing stop. Sometimes I could copy two tables. However, when I ran the import/export wizard to copy each table one at a time, it worked.

The error that I got was "Cannot insert duplicate key in object..." I selected the options to "Delete rows in existing destination tables", and "Enable identity insert". What am I doing wrong?

Inserting Identity Only

Sep 27, 2007

Someone asked me the other day about creating a table with one column that is an identity field and doing an insert so they can capture the SCOPE_IDENTITY() to use across seferal tables. I've never done anything like it and it seemed trivial at the time, but I'm not seeing how to make an insert work. So, for example, we have a table defines as: DECLARE @Bar TABLE (ID INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL)
Now, how do you write a simple insert statement that will add a row to the table?

Basicaly, this is an acedemic exercise, but I can't seem to make it work unless I add another column to the table. Any ideas? Maybe I'm not caffinated enough..? :)

No @@IDENTITY When Inserting Text

Apr 26, 2002

I have an odd issue with a stored procedure using output parameters and a database text field.

I am using custom VB6 COM+ objects in the middle tier and SQL Server 2000 on the back end. The stored procedure has an int as it's first parameter; it is an output parameter which gets set to @@IDENTITY after the data is written to the tables. The last parameter is a text.

The COM+ object executes the proc; ADO 2.7 incorrectly identifies the text parameter as an adVarChar, so I explicitely convert it to an adLongVarChar when I detect that the incoming data is > 8000 characters.

The proc writes the data correctly to the database in all cases. However, when the data is > 8000 characters, SQL doesn't appear to correctly set the output variable. No errors are generated, I simply don't get any value written to the variable. I've searched through MS's documentation, but can't seem to find anything on this issue.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

Inserting With DTS In IDENTITY Table

Hi

I need to insert values from a text-file to a table with a primary key as identity. In the text file I have no idea of the primary key values and i get "foreign key constraint violation" when trying to import null values into the column.

How can I solve the problem? With ordinary insert-statement there is no problem since the table generates identity- key values automatically. Is there a possibility to generate identity values with DTS-import?

INSERTING Into IDENTITY Field

Nov 15, 2006

I have a table with the following schema:
CREATE TABLE [itis].[wrk_taxon_authors] (
[wb_taxon_author_id] [int] NOT NULL ,
[taxon_author_id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[taxon_author] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
[kingdom_id] [smallint] NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO

I am trying to insert the following data (as you can see fields are seperated with the | ):

19||Flores-Villela and Sánchez-H., 2003|5|
20||Wiegmann, 1828|5|
16|17482|Gray, 1838|5|
17|9823|(Wiegmann, 1828)|5|
I get the following error:Server: Msg 4869, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk Insert failed. Unexpected NULL value in data file row 1, column 2. Destination column (taxon_author_id) is defined NOT NULL.
Server: Msg 4869, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk Insert failed. Unexpected NULL value in data file row 2, column 2. Destination column (taxon_author_id) is defined NOT NULL.

Since I have defined column 2 as an identity column, I don't understand why SQL Query analyzer is upset when I do not have a value in that field. To me, I would think it would auto-insert an integer (starting at seed 1 and incrementing by 1), but it doesn't. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
