Inserting Unique Values Into A Different Tables If They Don't Exists Already.
Jul 30, 2007
Hi
I am trying to insert values into a table that doesn't exist there yet from another table, my problem is that because it is joined to the other table it keeps on selecting more values that i don't want.
Code Snippet
SET NOCOUNT ON
INSERT INTO _MemberProfileLookupValues (MemberID, OptionID, ValueID)
SELECT M.MemberID, '6', CASE M.MaritalStatusID WHEN 1 THEN '7'
WHEN 2 THEN '8'
WHEN 3 THEN '9'
WHEN 4 THEN '10'
END
FROM Members M
INNER JOIN _MemberProfileLookupValues ML
ON M.MemberID = ML.MemberID
WHERE M.Active = 1
AND OptionID <> 6
When i execute that code it returns all the values, let say OptionID = 3 is smoking already exists in the MemberProfileLookupValues table then it is going to select that persons memberID
I want to insert only members values that aren't already in the _MemberProfileLookupValues from the Members table (I think that it is because of the join statement that is in my code, but i don't know how i am going to select members that aren't in the table, because i have a few other queries that are very similar that are inserting different values, so ultimately
ONLY INSERT THE MemberID the values 6 and the statusID of X if it is not in the table already.
Any ideas / help will be greatly appreciated. Please help.
Kind Regards

What would be the best way to insert unique values into a table/unique column ?
I cannot make that table/unique column as indentity. Right now, I use a staging table with indentity column, insert rows then insert rows back to
final table.
Suggestions are much appreciated.

Hi all,
I've got a large table (3mil records) with a number of columns, but currently no way to refer to any individual column. I therefore need a primary key, but does anyone know of a SQL statement I can use that will create a column (say, ID) that is automatically filled with an incrementing 'counter'? Or, instead, how can I set unique incremental values after first creating the column?
Many thanks,
Graham

Hi All, am new to sql server in my application I am having one Asp.net web page, the user has to enter values for 5 fields(Empno,Empname, salary, deptno, deptname) in that web page and for that i created two tables in sql serverEmp Table- empno(primary key),empname, salaryDept Table- Deptno(primary key),empno(Foreign key ),Deptname(with some check constraint.) After the user enter all the values in the Asp.net web page now i want to store data into database for that i wrote the following stored procedure...create procedure usp_EmpDept @empno integer, @empname varchar(15), @salary money, @deptno integer, @deptname varchar(10) As Insert into emp(empno,empname,salary)values(@empno,@empname,@salary) Insert into dept(deptno,Empno,deptname)values(@deptno,@empno,@deptname) but the problem is whenever some constaint violation for eg. if some check constraint violation in Dept table its inserting the values in the Emp table only, but my requirement is, It must enter into both tables if there is no constaraint violation otherwise it has to ignore both the tables. And also please suggest is there any better way to insert values into two tables other than using the stored procedure Any help will be greatly appreciated..Thanks,Vision..

Hi all,
I want to produce some output for Mainframe application. For that I want to insert values from multiple table as source to a single column (huge in size)of a different table (Destination table). There may be same related records in all of the source tables with the primary key. When I export values from the source tables , each related records should be insterted to the destination table's field (multiple entries for each table). Please advise.

I have a table that has for each shop a value that can change over time. For example
BK_POS 1 --> Segment A
BK_POS 1 --> Segment /
What I would like to achieve is to get all distinct Shops (BK_POS) from the table above, but if for that specific pos a row exists where the segment = "/" then I do not want to take this BK_POS in my select query.More concrete, the for example above I do not want to select BK_POS 1 because he has one row where the segment = "/".

I can't seem to get this work. I'm using SQL2005
I want to check if a record exists before entering it. I just can't figure out how to check it before hand.
Thanks in advance. Protected Sub BTNCreateProdIDandName_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles BTNCreateProdIDandName.Click
' Define data objects
Dim conn As SqlConnection
Dim comm As SqlCommand
' Reads the connection string from Web.config

' Initialize connection
conn = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
' Check to see if the record exists
If
comm = New SqlCommand("EXISTS (SELECT (BuilderID, OptionNO FROM optionlist WHERE (BuilderID = @BuilderID) AND (OptionNO = @OptionNO)", conn)
Then
'if the record is exists display this message.
LBerror.Text = "This item already exists in your Option List."
Else
'If the record does not exist, add it. FYI - This part works fine by itself.
comm = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO [OptionList] ([BuilderID], [OptionNO], [OptionName]) VALUES (@BuilderID, @OptionNO, @OptionName)", conn)

comm.Parameters.Add("@OptionNO", System.Data.SqlDbType.NVarChar)
comm.Parameters("@OptionNO").Value = DDLProdID.SelectedItem.Value
comm.Parameters.Add("@OptionName", System.Data.SqlDbType.NVarChar)

I have 1+ CSV files (using a foreach loop) which I'm doing a lot of transform work on and then inserting into a SQL database table.
Each CSV file usually contains about 2 days worth of data (contains date stamps) - somewhere in the region of 60k records per day.
The destination table currently contains 3 million+ rows and will get bigger.
I need to make sure that before inserting into the destination table, the data doesn't already exist.
I've read the following article: http://www.sqlis.com/311.aspx
While the lookup method works, it takes ages and eats up memory as it caches the 3m+ records before running for each CSV. Obviously this will only get worse as the table grows in size.
To make things a little more efficient what I'd like to do, is first derive the dates I'm dealing with in the current file - essentially storing the max(date) and min(date) in variables. Then in the lookup SQL use those vars, to reduce the amount of data that needs to be brought into the transformation to check against before inserting into the destination table.
Lookup SQL eg. SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE Date BETWEEN varMinDate AND varMaxDate.
Ideally I'd use an aggregate transformation and then use the subsequent output from that either in the lookup query or store the output in vars, but I don't think you can do that and I get the feeling I'm approaching this with the wrong mindset.
Any thoughts would be great!

Hello,
I have a table with sixty columns in it, five of which define uniqueness for the records. Currently there are 190,775 records in the table. One of the records is a duplicate. I need to insert only the unique records from this table (all columns) into another table. I cannot use a unique nonclistered index with IGNORE_DUP_KEY in the destination table because of a problem I am having with the 'duplicate key was ignored' message. The destination table has a primary key with a clustered index on the same five columns.
How can I put together a SELECT statement that will give me all of the columns in the source table based on uniqueness of the five key columns?
Does my request make sense? Please let me know if you have questions.
Thank you for your help!

Hi, I have been asked to write some code that can check a large table for duplicate values in a non pk column. The table may have up to 1000000 rows. The PK column is an auto increment field. For performance reasons the column in question could not be set to unique values only for inserts, an algorithm is used to create unique no's before the insert but what I am doing is double checking that their have been no duplicates created accidently. If their are duplicates I need to know what rows they occurred on.
Thanks

Hello,
I'm struggling with a query that needs to use Not Exists between two unrelated tables. I'm not sure of the best way to handle this with SQL Query Analyzer.
I have three tables, employees, courses and training_records. There is no link between employees and courses other than through the training records table. My problem is that I am unsure of how to pull all employees and an associated course id and course title when there is not a training record for that employee/course?
I had a query that would work when I specified the course id, but I wanted to do this for a list of about 25 courses.
SELECT e.empnumber, e.Nickname + ' ' + e.lastname as employeeName
FROM empdata e
WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM #TrainingRecords tr
LEFT JOIN #TrainingCourses tc
ON tc.ClassID = tr.classid
WHERE tc.ClassID = 1377
AND tr.employee = e.empnumber)
I then modified it to get the classid and name
SELECT e.empnumber, e.Nickname + ' ' + e.lastname as employeeName, tc.ClassID, tc.ClassName
FROM empdata e
LEFT JOIN #TrainingCourses tc
ON tc.ClassID = 1377
WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM #TrainingRecords tr
WHERE tr.ClassID = tc.ClassID
AND tr.employee = e.empnumber)
I then got it to work using the full list
SELECT e.empnumber, e.Nickname + ' ' + e.lastname as employeeName, tc.ClassID, tc.ClassName
FROM empdata e
LEFT JOIN #TrainingCourses tc
ON tc.ClassID in (1032, 1054, 1059, 1060, 1062, 1063, 1069, 1072, 1074, 1075, 1122, 1189, 1190, 1191, 1192, 1193, 1210, 1218, 1219, 1220, 1310, 1377, 1411)
WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM #TrainingRecords tr
WHERE tr.ClassID = tc.ClassID
AND tr.employee = e.empnumber)
My results seem to work like I want them to, but I have never joined a table without actually joining on a value from each table. In this case I join to a list of values and that just looks odd to me. Is this good or crappy development? Is there a better way this should be done?

Hi,
Suppose a table [Inventory]:
Item Color Quantity
-------------------- -------------------- --------------------------
Table Blue 10
Table Red 20
Table Yellow 30
Chair Blue 40
Chair Red 50
I'm wondering if there is a group state like this:
Select Item, ?Function(Color), Sum(Quantity) From Inventory Group by Item
which returns this:
Table Blue,Red,Yellow 60
Chair Blue,Red 90
Does anyone has an idea how this can be achieved?

how to find all possible combinations of values, for example:

INSERT INTO temp1 (item, order) VALUES ('apple',1);
INSERT INTO temp1 (item, order) VALUES ('pear',2);
INSERT INTO temp1 (item, order) VALUES ('blueberry',3);
I need the output to be like this:
apple
pear
blueberry
apple, pear
apple, blueberry
pear, blueberry
apple, pear, blueberry
I don't need the reverse of each. For example, I need only 'apple, pear'... I don't need 'pear, apple'.

I need a query to return two values. One will be the total units and the other will be total unique units. See exmaple data below. It does not have to be one query. This will be in SP, so I can keep it seperate if I have to.
ID | ID_UNIT
1 | 01
1 | 01
1 | 02
1 | 03
1 | 03
1 | 04
1 | 04
I need two results.
Total Units = 7 - easy to do by using count()
Total unique units = 4 - I cannot use group by as it would return multiple results for each unit, which is not what we want.

Hi All,
I need a bit of help with a join. I have 2 tables :
TradeSummary
has fields : SymbolID, CurrentPrice, TotalValue
Trades
has fields : SymbolID, TradeID, ExecutionTime, TradeValue
TradeSummary has one entry for each SymbolID, while Trades contains one or more entries per SymbolID
and what I want to retreive is :
For every item in TradeSummary get CurrentPrice, TotalValue from TradeSummary
and also get TradeValue from Trades for the record for max(ExecutionTime)
tables are joined on TradeSummary.SymbolID = Trades.SymbolID
Every attempt of mine so far returns multiple rows for each SymbolID - I want only one row per SymbolID
thanks in advance

I am using Access 2007 and I have 10 columns of data.
I am trying to select all the data from all 10 columns where the first column's data returns only the Unique values and the other columns return all the data from the row that is returned from the first column.
I have used this
SELECT DISTINCT [SFR Rates All].Sorter, [SFR Rates All].SProgram, [SFR Rates All].S_Price, [SFR Rates All].Min_Loan, [SFR Rates All].Max_Loan
FROM [SFR Rates All];
But that returns all the data in the table and all values in the Sorter column with duplicates because each row has distinct data.
I am trying to return unique values from [SFR Rates All].Sorter (the first column) and all the data from the other 9 columns that are contain the row with the unique value in Sorter.
I know that I am missing something basic but well, I can't figure it out.
Thanks

Let's say I have two rows with 200+ columns ( I exported these rows from Lotus Notes to SQL Server) I am not sure what columns makes unique of these rows. It's going to be tedious by checking each column values.
Is there anyway I can write a squl query on these two rows which outputs column names which are having unique values.
I would appreciate If anybody gives me hint about achieving desired result

I have this query and it works except for I am getting duplicate primary keys with unique column value. I want to combine them so that I have one primary key, but keep all the columns. Example:
Key column 1 column 2 column 3 column 4
A 1 1
A 2 2
B 2 3
B 5 5
it should look like:
A 1 1 2 2
B 2 3 5 5
Here is my query:
SELECT *
FROM [TLC Inventory].dbo.['2014 new$']
WHERE [TLC Inventory].dbo.['2014 new$'].mis_key LIKE '2%'
AND dbo_Product_Info#description NOT LIKE 'NR%'
AND dbo_Line_Info#description NOT LIKE 'OBSOLETE%'
Do I use a sum function?
