Installation Issue - Access To Path Denied On Service Start
Dec 28, 2006
Hi,
I have a generally well working silent installer of SQL Server sp1, that installs a named of SQL Express then runs some create database scripts on it.
I have a customer for whom this fails. It appears that the SQL server service does not start. When I tell the client (non-computer literate!) to start it manually through Admin Tools>Service, a message appears saying "Access to the path denied", and seemingly doesn't specify the path of the denial.
Has anyone encountered this, or is anyone able to hazard a guess as to the cause of this issue.
Many thanks,
Chris

All,
I have installed sqlserver 2005 using the standard msdn universal installation discs on my laptop running vista business.
The mssqlserver service will not start automatically as the setup configures it
and I cannot start the service manually because I get the 'Access Denied' error message
I am logged on the the computer with adminstration privileges
Thank for all help received in advance,
Dave.....

I have created a package that works just fine from my desktop. I am now testing it by deploying it to the server. The task was imported into the "File System" store. I connected to the SQL Server, from my desktop, with SSMS. I right clicked the package and selected "Execute" If I just validate the task, it validates without errors. When I go to run the task I get a "Access to the path is denied" error at the start of the first file system task. I am sure it is a permission issue. Based on the info from another thread in the forum:
"Security to network shares is dependent on the user who is running the package. If you are running it yourself, make sure you have permissions to the share. If you are running it from SQL Agent, you might need to use a proxy account (search for SQL Agent Proxy in Books Online) to access it."
I have some questions:
1. When I select "execute" what account is SQL Server using for permissions for accessing network folders? Is it mine, SQL Server Agent, something else? If it is my account, why would I get an "Access to the path is denied" error?
2. I don't understand how to use a proxy account, or even if I need one. I assume that when I set the task for scheduling I'll need one. I read the BOL pages, but I'm still confused as to what I need to set up.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lee

I am getting the message Access to the path 'C:Windowssystem32config' is denied when working with a report model in SQL 2005 BIDS. My OS is Vista SP1. I launch BIDS with "run as administrator". My account is part of the administrator group. I get the error when I am trying to add an identifying attribute to a report mode entity; specifically, I get the message when I try to add a member (the identifying attribute). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Note: this applies to SQL 2012 only. I'm using the project deployment model in SQL SSIS 2012
I have a script task inside the SSIS package that renames some files on a domain share. (mydomainmyfileshare)
The database owner is a domain user (mydomainsvclogin)
I start the package from a stored procedure like so:
EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id
When the package is deployed to my local machine, it executes without error.
When it is deployed to a remote server on the same domain (2012), I get an error:
Access to the path mydomainmyfileshare is denied.
The report log show that the caller is mydomainsvclogin. I added some informational logging of my own and I see that the variable System::UserName is also mydomainsvclogin
I logged on to windows as mydomainsvclogin and verified that I can modify/delete/change files on mydomainmyfileshare
On older packages, I used credentials and proxy accounts to set up access to domain resources.
How do you specify the account (a domain account) that will access domain resources in an SSIS 2012 package ?

Hi all,
I'm trying to let certain users execute an SSIS package through an SP in SQL.
I've set up a proxy account for xp_cmdshell that the other users will use to execute dtexec with, but i get this message:
Could not load package "File SystemCODA_Actuals" because of error 0x80070005.
Description: Access to the path 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSPackagesCODA_Actuals.dtsx' is denied.
When i log onto the server with the proxy account, i can navigate to that folder and open the package.
When try to execute it from the command shell:
dtexec /DTS "File SystemCODA_Actuals" /Decrypt "password" /Reporting E /SET Package.Variables[User::JobId].Value;25'
i get the same message. How come? How do i fix this? I've read somewhere that i should grant read to the package store to that user , how do i do that? Can't find that option in the tools or manuals.
Thanks in advance,
Gert-Jan

My SQL Server and MSDE, running under Windows XP, has been operating fault free since a year. Suddenly I cannot connect with the error "SQL Server Does Not Exist or Access Denied". I cannot find anything abnormal in the Client nor the SQL server.
The only changes in my PC are done when installing the updates and the problem started after I installed Service Pack 2. Is this just a coincident or could there be some relation with the new Security centre in Service pack 2.
I have compared with the same set up in another PC without Service Pack 2 and there everything works fine.
Any suggestions please?

I am running SQL Express with Reporting Services 2005 SP2.
Installed both on with the NT-AuthorityNetwork Service
I uploaded a report and I can execute it in the Report Manager.
What I want to do is execute the report via Webservice and stream the result as PDF.
Code SnippetReporting.ReportExecutionService svc = new Reporting.ReportExecutionService();
svc.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;
svc.LoadReport(report, historyID);
svc.SetExecutionParameters(parameters, "en-us");
byte[] results = svc.Render(format,deviceInfor,out fileNameExtension,out mimeType,out encoding,out warnings,out streams);
this.Response.Clear();
this.Response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
this.Response.AddHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment; filename=Report.pdf");
this.Response.BinaryWrite(results);
this.Response.End();
this is my code in the asp.net page
and I get following exception

Looks like I need some additional adjustment on the authentication. But I do not know where and how.
I try to change the webservice identity but after changing the user identity of the application pool in iis ( I think this is the only way to change webservice identity) I got the error message service unavailable in IIS. With this I also couldn't start the webfront end any more. Switching back to NT-AuthorityNetwork Serive the web front end worked again.
I tryed to add
Code Snippet<identity impersonate="true" />
to the web config and I get the same Error on the webserver account...
It would be great if someone could help me to adjust the settings...

Hi!
I understand that this topic is one of the most discussed topics ever. However i could not find the relevant information after going through (almost) all the posts so far. Hence this post. I am getting the 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied' error when I am trying to access SQL Server from a WINDOWS SERVICE. SQL Server and the Windows service are running on two different machines. (When they are on the same machine, it works). All the solutions I found so far are related to web apps. What should I do in the case of a windows service? My connection string uses SQL server authentication. (I tried with windows authentication. Its not working either.). Under what login does windows services run and how can I add it to valid SQL server logins?

Trying to install SQL Server 6.5 on an NTFS partition (Drive E:) of an NT 4.0 Server (SP3). This server is currently running Sybase. At end of install, I get the following error:
"The SQL Server Installation could not be successfully completed. MSSQLSERVER - The service could not be started. Please check the error/event log to determine the cause. -5"
The event log showed Event ID 7000:
"The MSSQLSERVER service failed to start due to the following error: Access is denied."
I have a feeling this is related to the service account for MSSSQLSERVER and SQLEXEC. I created a new domain user before the installation, and set its attributes and rights as explained on p. 14 of the "What`s new in SQL Server 6.5" manual. I selected this as the service account during installation. I`ve also tried using the "system" account, with the same results.
Any help would be appreciated...

Hi All,
We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!
Error:
An error 1069 - )The service did not start due to logon failure) occurred while performing this service operation on the SQLServerAgent service.
Regards,
Joseph

In sql 2000, during the installation an option was given to allow the installer to install to a different drive or path, however in sql 2005, I do not see an option. During the installation it does give you the option of installing via the command line interface, however this would be the last option. If this is the only method of installing sql 2005 for a different data drive path, then please provide the command line to do this. I've used the command line osql/isql to restore db's in sql 2000/msde and it's a pain.

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in parallel with SQL Server 2000. The server is a Dell 2650 with 1 GB RAM running Windows 2000 Server.
The initial part of the setup runs the System Configuration Checker (SCC), which is generating this warning:
Default Installation Path Permission Requirement (Warning)
The server is a member of a domain, but I am logged in as the local administrator. The drive is not compressed. There are no file system problems. I am at a loss as to why this warning is occuring, and do not want to proceed until I figure this out.
(I got this warning on another server as well. That was a test server, so I proceeded. The engine seems to run ok, but SSIS will not load, says a component is missing. Not sure if the two issues are related or not).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

I have recently upgraded to SQL2014 on Win2012. The Access front end program works fine.
But, previously created Excel reports with built in MS Queries now fail with the above error for users with MS 2013. The queries still work for users still using MS 2007.
I also cannot create any new queries and get the same error message. If I log on as myself on the domain to another PC with 2007 installed it works fine, so I don't think it is anything to do with AD groups or permissions.

When running the following statement in SQL 2005, I get the error message "Access is denied":
exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'TYPE \SERVER-BSHAREFILE.TXT'
The following are true about the network:
The SQL Server is installed on SERVER-A.
SERVER-A and SERVER-B are Windows 2003 servers on the same Windows 2003 domain.
The SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services are running under the domain account SQLSERVICE.
SQLSERVICE is a member of the Domain Admins group.
The Domain Admins group is part of the local Administrators group on SERVER-B.
The SQLSERVICE account has also explicitly been given Full Control to the folder referenced by \SERVER-BSHARE
xp_cmdshell use has been enabled on the SQL Server.
If I run the following command in SQL:
exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'whoami'the following is returned: DOMAINSQLSERVICE
If I change the command to access the c: drive instead of a network drive, it executes successfully.
Can anyone shed some light on why I still cannot access any of the files in this folder using xp_cmdshell?

hi,
after installing sp1 for sql server 2005 the sql server integration services did not start. and i can`t start them manually. the installation succeeded without problems (both sql server and sp1)
the only problem was with installing sql server 2005. in the sql server configurations manager the following protocols were disabled:
- named pipes
- tcp/ip
- via
- shared memory was enabled
is this a problem. because in the "how to verify installation of sql server" is written, that tcp/ip has to be enabled. however i can manually enable it.
i can`t start the sql server integration services manually. so what can i do? i also tried reinstall sql server but i do get the same error.
hope somebody can help me!

I have connected to the SQL Server 2005 instance usign the SQL Server Management Studio; I have changed the default locations for the database and log files. I have also rebooted the machine. When I look in the SQL Server Configuration Manager in the properties for the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) I see that the data path is still set to the old value and this field is read-only. How can this can changed without going through the registry?

I installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on my Laptop for use with IIS 7.0; Everything was working fine untill I opened the Report Server Site with WVD 2008, it asked me to Modify the web.config for debugging. After doing that the Report Server Site started showing an error page saying there was a rsInternal error. I tried fixing the Web.config by hand but it dident work, so I tried completly reinstalling the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. It reinstalled perfectly excluding the Report Server. When it came time to install the Report Server; I got the error message.
The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Setting reporting service and share point exclusion path. The error is: Fatal error during installation.

Hi,
I am developing an application that uses Access database (mdb file) to store the user data. The user of this application is not interested in the database file (to view in MS Access Environment). Does the user machine requires MS Access installation to run my application or just some couple of dlls (OleDB driver, Access DB Engine,..) should be enough to run my application?
Thanks,
Rao

Something very weird happened this morning... I booted my computer as usual, but for some reason SQL service stopped by itself. I tried to start it again, but it just doesn't respond. I open up Service Manager, clicked on refresh services, but still no response. The "start service" button is available for me to press, but when I press it it doesn't seem to do anything.
Note that sql service was running last night as I switched off computer. I haven't changed anything since.
Any clues, guys?
