Express Instance Fails When Installing ACT - SQL Server Setup Failed
Dec 4, 2006I just upgraded ACT database and it needs SQL Server. I just keep getting "SQL Server Setup Failed". I downloaded SQL from Microsoft, went to install and get the same error. It then refers to a summary txt log which I have had a look at but to be quite honest means nothing to me.
I only want to be able to use ACT!!
Anyone help PLEASE!!

Aug 24, 2006I have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (sp3a) running on a windows 2003 (sp4) Server.
It is a Production Server with 3 NAMED Instances and NO Default Instance.
Does anyone know if I can rerun the SQL Server Install and add a DEFAULT Instance to this box without disrupting the other Named Instances???

This might sound a bit of a silly question, but what issues will I come across with installing a new instance of SQL on top of a single instance setup?
The server I have to do this on is currently live on the existing instance and I can't afford any downtime (apart from a 10 minute reboot if rellay required).

Installing MSDE With A Different Instance Name

I'm trying (and have been for ages) to install a MSDE server with a
different instance name than the default. Im setting the
instancename when using the setup.exe file and all seems to install
fine, but when I then restart my system the SQL icon appears in the
system tray but the white circle is completely empty. It says
that it is not connected.
If i install with the default instance name then all seems to work fine.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and what I can do to fix this problem?

Etup Hangs When Installing Second Instance
Mar 2, 2001When I try and install a new instance alongside the default instance setup appears to hang when asking for the type of installation, ie. Typical,Custom,Advanced. I had to kill the setup process, however the original instance still works. Has anybody had any similar problems during setup. Thanks in anticipation.

I want to know if the instance will go down for any amount of time during the update? I can schedule a server reboot after hours, but don't want to apply the service pack if it will take the instance offline at any point.

I have a problem installing a SQL Server 2005 (developper edition) on my windows XP SP2 machine.
When I launch the setup, all the requirements are ok, but I'm just allowed to install client components and documentations. I can't install the database server instance.
The Sql Server is downloaded from MSDN (2 iso files extracted to my HD)
My machine is a P4 2.8Ghz HT with 1Gig of RAM.

Installing Second Instance To SQL 2005 Clustered Installation
Mar 19, 2008I will be installing a second SQL 2005 instance on an existing SQL 2005 clustered installation. We've added a set of disks for the new instance. My question is, will the existing clustered instance need to be taken offline for the installation, or will the nodes need to be rebooted after installing the new instance?
I haven't been able to confirm this on MS website or by Googling.
I understand we need to ensure no one is logged in to the remote nodes during the install as well.

The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS

Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections

I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project?

Oct 17, 2006When I run the install script, I always get a warning that the hard drive (space?) won't support the install, but I have installed successfully with the new tools etc. and I still have 20 gigs left on my laptop. Why is this warning given?

Sep 27, 2006We've devoted a resource to this today, but I have to believe it's something easy that we're overlooking. The scneario is that we have a production Web application that until last weekend had a SQL 2000 back end. This weekend we installed a new instance of SQL 2005 and everything works (we tested in a sandbox environment, but someone must not have load tested enough) and never saw these exceptions. So, after the upgrade we now receive 100's of thexe SQL excptions per day:A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. I have download the express toolkit to use the Business Intelligence, however after I have installed the add on, when ever I select the Musiness Intelligence Management Studio I have a browser looking for the file Devenv.exe file and a reinstall is not working.

Sep 24, 2006I have installed SQL Server Express with Advanced Services SP1 option. I am not really sure if I should have done this but I could not resist the temptation to have as many options as I could get. I even installed some samples/sample databases.
However, I cannot understand how to start using the SQL Express package which (unlike the Visual Basic 2005 Express or the Web Developer Express I also downloaded) does not show me a start up page. I get SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting and SQL Server Surface Area Configuration, all from Configuration Tools. I have no idea how to proceed.
Could I have downloaded the wrong package?

Installing SQL Server Express
Dec 7, 2006I am having a problem installing SQL Server Express 2005 from the command line in that it gets part way through and then stops - no message - just terminates. After much rooting around in log files and running a normal install I'm pretty sure that it is stopping because of a warning regarding "Minimum Hardware Requirements".
The laptop I'm trying to install it on is a Samsung X05, Centrino 1.4, 1gb RAM and 60gb free disk space. I've tried it on another laptop (Sony with a higher spec.) and get exactly the same problem.
As far as I can see the hardware spec is well above the recommended minumum so I'm at a loss as to what to try next to overcome the problem. If anyone has any suggestions then I'd be very grateful.
Trouble Installing SQL Express
Oct 19, 2006When trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express, it hangs up on "Detecting Installed IIS". This happens if I have IIS installed, and if I do not. My computer is running XP Media Edition. I found a similar question asked by flashg on these forums, but there was no answer to the problem. There were a few other people who posted the same problem.
Is there any fix to this? I am writing software that I planned on using SQL Server Express to store its data with. But if SQL Server is going to cause problems on my customer's computers then I cannot use it.

Installing SQL Express Via Commandline
Apr 1, 2007So, I read this thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=416220&SiteID=1, which suggested that I could call SQLEXPR32.EXE (the SP2 download) with the relevant commandline args in exactly the same way I could call setup.exe. Namely, if I were to call:

then I should be able to use

where my setup.ini contains

Would be great to get some help on this. I'm equally happy with the set of commands I need to call in order to extract SQLEXPR32 and then run setup, but SQLEXPR32 seems to extract to a random GUID dir, and automatically start setup, neither of which is condusive to automating it.
