Integration Services :: Flat File Connection Manager With Variable Columns
May 28, 2009
I have a requirement wherein I have to setup the flat file connection manager to accept columns on fly. Meaning I want to retrieve list of columns/column count from the database when the package is run and set the connection manager with those many columns.
Can we disable a flat file connection manager in a ssis package just as how we can disable a OLE db task? When I try to disable the flat file by clicking on work offline its gets disabled which is what i expected , but when i close the package and reopen it again its again enabled , is this the way that a flat file connection manager works.
URL....I'm having a problem with Integration Services Tutorials SSIS Tutorial: Creating a Simple ETL Package Lesson 2: Adding Looping (step 3).I can't add a variable to Sample Flat File Source Data.Right-clicking on the connection manager just shows two items of the property: File Name and File Path and nothing else.I am using MS Visual Studio Ultimate 2012. Does it have limitations? I've see screenshots where properties of flat file managers have many more options.
I've developed a package that is working well at development machine from VS 2013 for a sample flat file. Also, over development machine, I've deployed it to SSISDB catalogue and even from there also it is running well for the same file. When the same package is deployed to production server's SSISDB catalogue database, it throws following error while processing the same sample flat file, “Unable to retrieve column information from the flat file connection manager”
I'm doing a simple ETL that reads a database table and dumps the content to a text file. The text file will be named Employee.txt. This file name will remain the same across my environments, but I may want to vary the directory location to where I want this file dumped.
So, I defined an environment variable called "DataTargetDir" in all my environments. Now, I want to utilize this variable in the "File name:" box within the Flat File Connection Manager Editor. How do I do this? I'm thinking I can write something like "%DataTargetDir%Employee.txt" in the "File name:" box, but it's not working.
Im using the Flat File Connection Manager to access a flat file, tab delimited. The flat file has 200 columns, and when I'm editing the columns, I only preview columns from 0 to 97.
Does the flat file connection have a column number limit? How could I increase it?
I want to load flat files into a single table. But the flat files can have variable number of columns upto a maximum of 10 columns. The table in my database has 10 columns in it. So in case if I load a flat file having 6 columns then rest of the columns in the table will have nulls. I don't want to use script task for this as I am not good in writing C#code.
How to use variables in Connection Manager's properties? I see some replies through Configuration Package. But what if, it is still in development stage? I mean, can I use the Variable tab and create some variables like
Then put them in Password and UserName property of Connection Manager? If this is possible, how and how can I set the values of those variables I mentioned when I am going to deploy the package in the Production?
I will be receiving a CSV daily where columns within the file will change. The column order and number of columns can change daily. I need a way to read in the header from the csv and create a flat file connection that reflects the columns listed in the header.
Is there an easy way to do this using a script task? I have already read the header into a table but I have been unable to create the dynamic file connection.
I know that I think as sql2k programmer-dba yet but I cant avoid.
Ive got Flat File Connection Manager Editor dragged with a text file as ragged right format and CRLF as header row limiter. When from properties page and Columns option Im going to alter just a few colums I am not be able. It seems that you must erase all of them in order to define one or two. And in the case youd have 50???? When I ran sql2k DTS designer did that without problems, alter columns again and again.
As far as I know its a lose of flexibility, or not? Or is there any way for do that without deleting nothing else?
Public Class ScriptMain Inherits UserComponent Dim smpid As String Dim Prdt As String Dim rcnt As Int64
[code]...
Using the Vb script above I am expecting to read the first row from a flat file source and transferring the data into two variable using script component.
I get the following errors one after the other:"The collection of variables locked for read and write access is not available outside of PostExecute." "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
I am creating one SSIS package where my source is oracle. I have transferred the data from Oracle to flat file as per client requirement.I have to create single package for 2 country 1 is US and another is CANADA Columns are below
ZONE_ID, ZONE_NAME Zone Id having data like 10001,10002,10003,20001,2002,2003
Where zone_id start with 1000 is US Zone and Zone_Id start with 2000 is Canada Zone.
For US: 1. Load geography data from DB tables into flat files 2. Load geography data from flat files to Spectrum DB tables
For Canada: 1. Load geography data from DB tables into flat files 2. Load geography data from flat files to Spectrum DB tables
Now I want to look from flat file if Zone_id start with 1000 then it must go to US_DFT and if Zone_id start with 2000 then it must go to CANADA_DFT.
I have a Data Flow Task within a ForEach loop container. The source of the flow is ADO.NET connection and the destination is a Flat File Connection. I loop through a collection of strings in the ForEach loop. Based on the string content, I write some data to the same destination file in each iteration overwriting the previous version. I am running into following Errors:
[Flat File Destination [38]] Warning: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. [Flat File Destination [38]] Error: Cannot open the datafile "Example.csv". [SSIS.Pipeline] Error: Flat File Destination failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC020200E.
I know what's happening but I don't know how to fix it. The first time through the ForEach loop, the destination file is updated. The second time is when this error pops up. I think it's because the first iteration is not closing the destination file. How do I force a close of the file within Data Flow task or through a subsequent Script Task. This works within a SQL 2008 package on one server but not within SQL 2012 package on a different server.
I'm working in VS 2010 for SSIS 2012. I have a project whose deployment is done via project deployment to SSISDB. I've got a local flatfile connection manager within one of its packages. When I deploy I'm unable to override the file name property in either package configuration or job step configuration on the SQL Server. If the flatfile connection were at the project level, I could. Not sure of the rationale for this or maybe I'm doing something wrong.
created a very basic flow in SSIS: extracted table data through ole db connection, added multicast and as end result i created a flat file destination (with .txt file) and a ole db destination.
My question is; how can i delete the .txt file before executing the flow again? Want to avoid that the .txt file has duplicated rows after a second execution of the flow. Is it possible to use scd component or is this way to complicated? A for each loop?
i need a similar solution for the data that will be transported through the ole db destination task....
I need to process a 2012 Excel file. In SSIS Connection Manager, I am only given an option until Excel 2007 version. When I use this in my connection for Excel Source, I am prompted with this error when I attempt to select the name of the sheet:
"Could not retrieve the table information for the connection manager 'Excel Connection Manager'.
Failed to connect to the source using the connection manager 'Excel Connection Manager'"
I am testing SSIS and have created a Flat File Destination. I defined the Flat File Connection as New for the first time and it worked fine. Now, I would like to go back and modify the Flat File Connection in the Flat File Destination Editor, but it allows only to create a New connection rather allowing me to edit the existing one. For testing, I can go back and create a new connection, but if my connection had 50-100 columns then it would be an issue to re-create it from scratch.
I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.
The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?
Problem: ColA (Source) Rounding error to PARTY_NO (Destination) I have a field of text of in a flat file that the flat file connection manager Source picks up correctly 70000893? However when it gets the OLE DB Connection Destination the data has changed to 70000896. Thats before its even Written to the database. The only clue that something is wrong in the middle is the great Data viewer shows the number as 7.000009E+07 Other clues looking at the data it appears there is a rounding error on only the number that dont end in 00 ColA (Source) PARTY_NO (Destination) 71167300 71167296 70329000 70329000 70410000 70410000 Any ideas people? Thanks in advance Dave
I would like to set up the flat file connection manager that would take any file name that starts with "test" and then it could be anything after that. Something like test_*.txt.
Hi All, I am using flat file connection manager to create a text file. I could not find any way to set the file location (folder) dynamically such as using variable, expression etc, Is there any alternative I can use to achieve this? I really don't want to hard-coded the file location as it may differ in production environment. Thanks in advance.
As I have a file whose delimiters can be different. I have need to change the delimiters and filename programatically.
I have come across a way to change the filename using the inbuilt expressions setter. Howver the columns are not listed, possibly because they are on the advanced tab and theoretically each column delimiter could be different.
Will I have to do this through a script or is there an easier method?
Hello Experts, I am createing one task (user control) in SSIS. I have property grid in my GUI and 2 buttons (OK & Cancle). PropertyGrid has Properties like SourceConnection, OutputConnection etc....right now I am able to populate Connections in list box next to Source and Output Property.
Now my question to you guys is depending on Source Connection it should read that text file associated with connection manager. After validation it should pick header (first line of text file bases on record type) and write it into new file when task is executed. I have following code for your reference. Please let me know I am going in right direction or not.. What should go here ? ->Under Class A
I have a package A which is copied from another existing package B as most of the data structure and ETL mappings are same.
What I need to change in Package A is to change the file in Flat File Connection Manager. I can change it in the conneciton manager editor. However, it is automatically changed back to the previous one everytime when I try to Save All or run the package.
I also tried to copy/paste this Flat File Connection Manager in the same package but samething happen. The package file is not set 'Read Only" so anything else can Saved well except for the File name in connection manager.
Is this a bug? It would be very appreciated if anyone can give me any idea about this.
I use SQL Server 2012 and visual studio 2010.I created SSIS Project with task "Execute Package". Control flow view as: Package1 (execute package) -> Package2 (data flow).Data flow in Package2 view as: ADO.NET source -> ADO.NET destination.
When I started Package2, it's work. I havn't errors. But when I started Package 1 I have error "Unable to get managed connection from the Connection Manager runtime". In execution log I see that ADO.NET source produced this error on verification stage. Package failed on verification stage, not on execution stage. Why when I started Package 2 it work, but when I started Package1 (and Package1 started Package2) it failed?
Hi, I want to read only the first row in flatfile. I do not see this option on "Flatfile connection manager editor" setting wizard. Any work around for this?
I've tried all of the different column delimiters, but apparently this file does not use any of the built-in delimiters, such as tab. I think there are just blank spaces between the columns.
I've requested that the file be comma-delimited instead, but in the event that this is not possible, how should I handle this situation?
