Integration Services :: Pass Single Column Of Values From Successful Merge Join To EXECUTE Statement
May 7, 2015
How do I pass a single column of values from a successful merge join to an EXECUTE SQL statement so it can be used with an "IN" criteria of the WHERE clause? Here's an example of my update statement with two random key values:
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK IN ("XYZ123", "DEF890")
Is this even possible in SSIS, or am I better off using a loop and running the update EXECUTE SQL Statement for each individual key value, as in the following example?
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK = "XYZ123"
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK = "DEF890"

I need to pass File Name as parameter to the PS script. I tried using the StandardInputVariable but it doesn't work.

In the first image as can be seens i have 2 different data sources and then they are being joined using "Merge Inner Join". The "sort" is on BusinessEntityID column of Person table and "Sort1" is on "PersonID" of Customer table. The merge join of these 2 result in 19,119 rows.
On the other hand, if i use single data source and use a query with inner join on tables used in the first image (ie. 2 tables being used in 2 different data sources) as depicted in second image. Also, since merge cannot operate without SortKey i have defined TerritoryID as sort key in the advanced editor. The number of rows i get after this is "10,274". My select query was :
SELECT
P.BusinessEntityID,
P.PersonType,
P.Title,
P.FirstName,
P.MiddleName,
P.LastName,
P.Suffix,
C.TerritoryID
FROM stg.Person AS P
INNER JOIN stg.Customer AS C ON C.CustomerID = P.BusinessEntityID
ORDER BY C.TerritoryID;
According to me, it should have been the same as in first case i am using merge inner join and in second case i am using SELECT query with inner join. Upon drilling down i found that in the first case , my sort keys are BusinessEntityID and PersonID, if i modify this to CustomerID and BusinessEntityID as this is my join condition (in ithe inner join query shown above), i get the desired output. What i was wondering was, how the sort order change the Join Condition?

I have an SSIS package that imports data from an Excel file, replaces any value in Excel that reads "NULL" to "", then writes the data to a couple of databases.
What I have discovered today, is I have two columns of dates, an admit date and discharge date column, and what I need to do is anywhere I have a null value in the discharge date column, I have to replace it with the value in the admit date column.
I have searched around online and tried a few things using the Replace funtion in Derived columns but no dice so far.

I am using SSIS in SQL Server Enterprise 2005. I have two OLE DB data sources from two disparate databases (IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server), some columns from each of which are to be included in the merged output results. I have noted the various requirements in the forum postings with regard to sorting the OLE DB sources and specifying the output source columns as being sorted, as well as the requirement that the join fields in the two sources be close/exact matches. Yet, when I run this in VS, while the work area reflects the expected number of rows being input into the Merge Join transformation, no count is reflected as output from that transformation into the final destination table.Specifically, my two data sources (IBM DB2 and MS SQL) are configured as follows:
IBM DB2 contains an SQL statement that uses Cast operations to create the result columns.and an ORDER BY clause to ensure that the output is sorted by the desired two columns.. The OLE DB source property setting for IsSorted is set to true; the Output Columns folder column definitions for "key_ source_dtsy" and "key_source_dtrt" have their SortKeyPosition properties set to 1 and 2, respectively. Those field are both defined as data type DT_STR, with lengths of 4 and 2, respectively. Below is the Path metadata from the Data Flow Path editor from the path from this source:
IBM DB2 source"Name" "Data Type" "Precision" "Scale" "Length" "Code Page" "Sort Key Position" "Comparison Flags" "Source
Component""ID_CODE" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "10" "1252" "0" "" "Source F0005 User Defined Codes""CODE_DESCR_1" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "30" "1252" "0" "" "Source F0005 User Defined Codes""CODE_DESCR_2" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "30" "1252" "0" "" "Source F0005 User Defined Codes""key_source_dtsy" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "4" "1252" "1" "" "Source F0005 User Defined Codes""key_source_dtrt" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "2" "1252" "2" "" "Source F0005
User Defined Codes:
MS SQL contains an SQL statement that takes the columns as they are in the MS SQL table (no Cast operations needed); it also uses an ORDER BY clause to ensure the output is sorted by the join columns. The OLE DB source property setting for IsSorted is set to true; the Output Columns folder columns for "key_source_dtsy" and "key_source_dtrt" have their SortKeyPosition properties set to 1 and 2, respectively. Those field are both defined as data type DT_STR, with lengths of 4 and 2, respectively. Below is the Path metadata from the Data Flow Path editor from the path from this source:
MS SQL source"Name" "Data Type" "Precision" "Scale" "Length" "Code Page" "Sort Key Position" "Comparison Flags" "Source Component""id_code_name" "DT_I2" "0" "0" "0" "0" "0" "" "Source CodeName in db dwVdFY""key_source_dtsy" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "4" "1252" "1" "" "Source CodeName in db dwVdFY""key_source_dtrt" "DT_STR" "0" "0" "2" "1252" "2" "" "Source CodeName in db dwVdFY"
The Merge Join transformation specifies an INNER JOIN using the columns named "key_source_dtsy" and "key_source_dtrt" from the respective data sources.I know there are alternative ways of accomplishing my intent (Lookup, port MS SQL table to IBM DB2 so join can occur in SELECT statement, etc.; however, I'd like to use this functionality and assume that it should work.

we can assign one parameter value for each excecution of [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_object_parameter_value] by calling this catalog procedure..
Example: If I have 5 parameters in SSIS package ,to assign a value to those 5 parameters at run time should I call this [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_object_parameter_value] procedure 5 times ? or is there a way we can pass all the 5 parameters at 1 time .
1. Wondering if there is a way to pass multiple parameters in a single execution (for instance to pass XML string values ??)
2.What are the options to pass multiple parameter values to ssis package through stored procedure.?

I have an SSIS package in which I need to include a derived column. I've done derived columns a ton when there is just one condition being "tested". In this case there are two. I have the following update statement for a table I'm inserting data into:
UPDATE STAGING_DIM_AR_INVOICE
SET SC_CODE =
(
CASE
WHEN REC_TYPE = 'P' AND SC_CODE IS NULL THEN 'ag'
WHEN REC_TYPE = 'I' AND SC_CODE IS NULL THEN 'OL'
[Code] ....
I'd like to be able to address this case on the load itself. I've used CONDITIONAL before, but not sure how that would work in this case. I'm trying to keep it as "simple" as possible.

Hello all,
I am trying to think my way through a solution which I believe others have probably come across... I am trying to implement a matching routine wherein I need to match an address against a high value and a low value (or, for that matter an input date vs. a start and end date) to return the desired row ... i.e. if I were to use a straight vb program I would just use the following lookup:
"SELECT DISTINCT fire_id, police_ID, fire_opt_in_out, police_opt_in_out FROM ipt_tbl " & _
" WHERE zip_code = @zip_code AND addr_prim_lo <= @street_number AND addr_prim_hi >= @street_number " & _
" AND addr_prim_oe = @addr_prim_oe AND street_pre = @street_pre AND street_name = @street_name " & _
" AND street_suff = @street_suff AND street_post = @street_post " & _
" AND (expiry_date = '' OR expiry_date = '00000000' OR expiry_date > @expiry_date)" & _
" GROUP BY fire_ID, police_ID, fire_opt_in_out, police_opt_in_out"
My question, then, is how would you perform this type of query using a lookup / merge join or script? I have not found a way to implement a way to set the input columns? I can set the straight matches without a problem, i.e. lookup zip code = input zip code, but can't think of the correct way to set comparisons, i.e. lookup value 1 <= input value AND lookup value 2 >= input value
Any suggestions?
thanks for your time...

ALTER PROC [dbo].[sp_GetInvitationStatusTest]

select distinct t1.invited_isid as 'ISID', t1.invited_name as 'NAME',t1.invitation_status as 'STATUS',

If you look at the where clause i have invited by , i get the desired output if i just provide 1 name in the execution such as exec [dbo].[sp_GetInvitationStatusTest] 'marfilj' But my requirement is to make the procedure work with more than one input variable such as exec [dbo].[sp_GetInvitationStatusTest] 'marfilj','sujith' now i should get the output for 2 people but if i run this i receive the following error Procedure or function sp_GetInvitationStatusTest has too many arguments specified.

We're using MS Access 2010 as a frontend to an SQL server back-end. From Access, I can run read-only queries and pass-through queries. I'd like to use a local Access table as part of a join to server data. As a non-pass-through query, it's slow; about 5 min to join to 2 other tables.
I could use VBA to turn the local table into part of a pass-through query, with a large in() statement, or several where x='' ors but the local table may have 50000 entries in it. Is there a good or right way to pass this data in the query if I don't have write access to the server?

Group,Passing inline values to a udf is straightforward. However, how or is itpossible to pass a column from the select of one table into a udf thatreturns a table variable in a join to the original table. The goal is toexplode the number of rows in the result set out based on the result of theudf. Although the example I am providing here is simplified, we are tryingto parse out multiple values out of a text column and using a select into sothe result will be one row for each of row in the original table compoundedby the number of occurrences in the text field.(I know bad table design but that's out of my control)Thanks,Raycreate table TableOne(Col1 int,Col2 char(5))goinsert TableOne values (1, 'One')insert TableOne values (2, 'Two')insert TableOne values (3, 'Three')goCreate Function dbo.udfTableTwo(@Id int)RETURNS @tbl TABLE (TID int, TChar char(1))ASBEGINDeclare @test intset @test = @IdWhile @test >= 0BeginINSERT @tbl VALUES (@Id, Char(65+@test))set @test = @test - 1EndRETURNEND--worksselect a.*, b.* from TableOne a join dbo.udfTableTwo(2) bon a.col1=b.TID--Fails with Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '.'.select a.*, b.* from TableOne a join dbo.udfTableTwo(a.col1) bon a.col1=b.TIDdrop table TableOnegodrop function dbo.udfTableTwogo

We have SharePoint list which has, say, two columns. Column A and Column B.
Column A can have three values - red, blue & green.
Column B can have four values - pen, marker, pencil & highlighter.
A typical view of list can be:
Column A - Column B
red - pen
red - pencil
red - highlighter
blue - marker
blue - pencil
green - pen
green - highlighter
red - pen
blue - pencil
blue - highlighter
blue - pencil
We are looking to create a report from SharePoint List using SSRS which has following view:
red blue green
pen 2 0 1
marker 0 1 0
pencil 1 3 0
highlighter 1 1 1
We tried Sum but not able to display in single row.

Problem Summary: Merge Statement takes several times longer to execute than equivalent Update, Insert and Delete as separate statements. Why?
I have a relatively large table (about 35,000,000 records, approximately 13 GB uncompressed and 4 GB with page compression - including indexes). A MERGE statement pretty consistently takes two or three minutes to perform an update, insert and delete. At one extreme, updating 82 (yes 82) records took 1 minute, 45 seconds. At the other extreme, updating 100,000 records took about five minutes. When I changed the MERGE to the equivalent separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE statements (embedded in an explicit transaction) the entire update took only 17 seconds. The query plans for the separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE statements look very similar to the query plan for the combined MERGE. However, all the row count estimates for the MERGE statement are way off.
Obviously, I am going to use the separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE statements. The actual query plans for the four statements ( combined MERGE and the separate UPDATE, INSERT & DELETE ) are attached. SQL Code to create the source and target tables and the actual queries themselves are below. I've also included the statistics created by my test run. Nothing else was running on the server when I ran the test.
Server Configuration:
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, Enterprise Edition
3 x Quad-Core Xeon Processor
Max Degree of Parallelism = 8
148 GB RAM

I use the merge statement in a sproc to insert, update and delete records from a staging table to a production table.
In the long sql, here is a part of it,
When Matched and
((Student.SchoolID <> esis.SchoolID
OR
Student.GradeLevel <> esis.GradeLevel
OR
Student.LegalName <> esis.LegalName
OR
Student.WithdrawDate <> esis.WithdrawDate
Student.SPEDFlag <> esis.SPEDFlag
OR
Student.MailingAddress <> esis.MailingAddress)
Then update
Set Student.Schoolid=esis.schoolid,
.....
My question is how about if the column has null values in it.for example
if schoolID is null in production table is null, but in staging table is not null, will the <> return true.or if either side of <> has a null value, will it return true.
I don't want it to omit some records and causing the students records not get updated. If not return true, how to fix this?

Hello,
I have data coming in from two sources, one being SQL and the other being Oracle. The end result needs to be a CSV file with the columns in a specific order. I have a Data Flow task setup that takes both sources and does a Merge Join on them. I can add a Sort Transformation and manually set the sorting of all 156 columns that end up going to a CSV file destination. However, I have a table setup that holds the names of the 156 columns and the order that the CSV file expects them to be in. I would much rather do this step dynamically as the column names and order may change in the future. Anyone who has used the Sort Transformation for a large number of columns knows how tedious it can be and how adding a column in the middle will cause you to change the sort # for each of the columns that come after it.
So I added a Script Component between the Merge Join and the Flat File Destination hoping that I could alter the order of the columns there. However I added the following code and found that the SortKeyPosition is ReadOnly.
Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)
Dim column As IDTSInputColumn90
For Each column In Me.ComponentMetaData.InputCollection(0).InputColumnCollection
column.SortKeyPosition = 1
Next
End Sub
I was hoping to add some code to get the sort index from my table for each of the columns and set it to the SortKeyPosition. Has anyone out there done this before or seen an example that might point me in the right direction? I've searched for 2 days without coming up with much.
Thanks!
