Intermittent Slow SQL2005 Database

Aug 2, 2007

I'm querying a small SQL2005 database and finding that the query can sometimes complete in under a second and then 5 minutes later the same query can take 15 minutes to complete.

The query I'm running is very simple as follows:
select TOP 26 * from vSearchListOpportunityItem WHERE OpIt_OpportunityId=2495 ORDER BY Prod_Name, OpIt_OpportunityItemId

The view it is pulling data from only contains only 1890 lines, which in turn pulls data from 3 tables with 821, 2560, and 1957 lines of data. In other words it's small. I have noticed that if I try and open the smallest of these tables while on a 'go slow' period it also takes around 15 minutes to return the data.

The database was originally on SQL 2000. It is the only database on this powerful quad core server.
The SQL Server CPU usage never goes above 40%, and always has free memory.
No sign of locks.

I can't figure out why such a small database is going so slow with such a simple query. Any ideas?

Upgraded SQL2000 To SQL2005, SQL2005 VERY Slow

Dec 27, 2005

I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this. Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?

Sql2005 Transaction Become Very Slow

Mar 10, 2008

Hello,

I've migrated an DB from SQL2000 to SQL2005, all it's working, but i've a "strange" problem, during the night, the transactions become very slow (no specific load) and if i restart service or I change the Degree of parallelims or Cost Threshold for parallelims to another value, it's solve the problem.

In the server logs (W2003) and SQL logs I can't see an warning or error...

In the old SQL 2000 server i've no problem...

If anybody can help me .. :-)

Slow Performance In SQL2005

Feb 19, 2008

Hi,We have shifted one of our data processing to a new instance of SQL2005. For this a new DB was created in SQL2005 and it is not anupgrade of SQL200 DB.The data processing application is a VB6 application that runs a batchprocess to insert about4.5 million records everyday in this SQL 2005 database. I am usingADO(ver 2.6) Connection object to execute T-SQL insert statements toinsert the 4.5 mill. records. This same application used to insert the data in the SQL 2000databaseand used to take about 2.5 hours to do so. After moving it to SQL2005 the performance has really detriorated and it now takes morethan6 hours. Is there any configuration change that I need to do in SQL 2005?Please help.Note: There is also an instance of SQL 2000 running in the sameserver.TIA,Tawfiq

Very Slow And Not Complete Screen Update In SQL2005

Jan 14, 2008

Hi

I have the following problem (on 2 PC's now)

On 1 pc i installed VS2008 besides VS2005 and SQL 2005 (before i installed VS2008 everything was fine)

On the other is a fresh installed XP machine with only VS2008 SQL2550 and Office2007
Latets service packs are installed

On both machines when i open a table in SQL 2005 with the 'open table' command the show of the table is very slow.
Every row is updated file by field, the grid is not showing, the row and column headers are not 'grey' as normal.

Scrollign is impossible as the screen updates start again that slow.

Even a small table with 10 rows and 15 field behaves this slow. Its not workable.

What can be done to resove this???

Question Regarding Slow Performance An PAGEIOLATCH_SH Locks On Sql2005

Dec 7, 2007

Hi,I wondered in anyone can help with the following problem that i'mexperiencing, i'll try to provide as much info as possible and anysuggestions would be appreciated.I have just started at an organsiation and there seems to be slowperformance maybe on the san on a 64bit itanium dual core machine. 4CPUs are being showed to sql server, it also has 16gb of RAM. I'llstart with the configuration of the SAN.After speaking to the SAN guy, rather than carve the SAN up intodifferent area's for san Logs/Data etc they have gone for the approachof spreading a Vdisk across as many spindles as possible (All 145 ofthem). So the area that is presented to the SQL Server according thethe SAN guys is a vraid 5 stripe made up of all 145 disks which areall 72gb fibre-channel disks. This storage is not just made available to sql server but also madeavailable to other apps as well that need storage. Having read themanufactres best practice on setting this up there is a valid argumentfor doing this. The bandwidth from the SAN is 2Gb fibre, with each computer that usesthe SAN having 2Gb fibre cards.Clearly, that could act as a bottle-neck. But, there's nothing thatcan be done about it according to the SAN guy.Needless to say, any changes on the SAN are pretty much going to beout of the question as far as he's concerned but i think performanceisn't that good for the type of box they have and the SAN its attachedto. The 2nd thing i'll explain is the setup of the database in question, firstly whoever set it up split the database into 16 different file of4 filegroups so the table that i'm selecting to is in one filegroupsplit over 4 files and the the table selecting from is in anotherfilegroup made up of another 4 files. These are placed on the samephysical disk made up of the SAN LUN with 145 spindles.Anyway when i do a select from a sales table which has various groupbys and then insert the results into a blank table with no indexes itcan take over 2hours for 200k rows which i find very slow. When i look at the sysprocesses table i am getting various waits asfollows :-72427200x0042900PAGEIOLATCH_SH 6:9:219209472427200x00690SLEEP_TASK72427200x00000SOS_SCHEDULER_YIELDThe process seams to be going inbetween a PAGEIOLATCH andSOS_SCHEDULER_YIELD a few times per second.Running the following to get io stalls gives the following :-Select * from sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats (6,7)Select * from sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats (6,8)Select * from sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats (6,9)Select * from sys.dm_io_virtual_file_stats (6,10)gives results like :-67170853985015624218246512844829457222526431245540454412438340307010565449074954240x0000000000000954It worries me that when the process is on the PAGEIOLATCH the waitcan be over 1000. Is it normal for the wait to be this long and whatwould be the best way to prove one way or another if the configurationof the san is causing this kind of performance???Thanks for any suggestions in advanceIan.

Slow ADO Connection Speed Vista Vs XP To SQL2005 / Server 2003

Jan 31, 2008

I have an application written in VB6 that creates a ADO connection using the (native SQL2005 clien)t from the client to SQLServer 2005 on Server 2003 configured as a stand alone server. The application works great on XP and has for a number of years.

Now I am attempting to deploy in Vista and using the same code the connection speed CRAWLS. it's in the magnitude of atleast 10 times slower. It eventualy works but the selects and doing a readnext against the resulting record set is at a snails pace.

What am I missing. It's has to be some sort of configuration problem somewhere.

SQL2005 Cannot Backup A Restored SQL2000 Database With Unknow Database Full-text Catalog Database

Nov 15, 2007

We replicate a SQL2000 database (DataBaseA) to a SQL2000 database (DataBaseB) by using the Restore function and hasn't change its logical name but only the physical data path and file name. It is running fine for a year. We use the same way to migrate the DataBaseB to a new SQL2005 server with the Restore function and the daily operation is running perfect. However, when we do the Backup of DatabaseB in the SQL2005, it just prompt the error message

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of full-text catalog 'DataBaseA' is not permitted because it is not online. Check errorlog file for the reason that full-text catalog became offline and bring it online. Or BACKUP can be performed by using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to restrict the selection to include only online data. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Please note we left the DataBaseA in the old SQL2000 server.

Please help on how we can delete the Full-text catalog from DatabaseB so we can do a backup

Migrating From Sql2000 MSDE Database To Sql2005 Express - Attach Database Errors

Apr 23, 2006

I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.

Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:

Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.

Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them.  But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?

Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?

Help pls?

SQL2005--how To Prohibit Database Restore...

Sep 24, 2007

We currently built a new SQL2005 server and have serveral sentitive Payroll database hosted in it. I managed to seperate some roles to various users to prohibit them to direct access the data but can access it via front-end application.

The problem is I setup a backup operator with the following rights

Server Roles -- Public

User Mapping

User Mapped to this login / Database membership for

PayrollDataBase_1 BackupOperatorName

db_backupoperator / db_denydatareader / db_denydatawriter / public

However, I try to login using the 'BackupOperatorName' in my workstation and Backup the PayllrollDataBase_1 to a server shared path says E:SqlDataBacupPayrollDataBase_1.BAK. Afterward, I copy it over the network back to my workstation and RESTORE in back to my local SQL2005 instant using the local SQL2005 SA user. All data CAN BE browse

Anyone please help to post how to restrict the Backup operator can only Backup the database but cannot restore to its local SQL2005 instant

Sql2005 And Possible Database Auditing/monitoring...

Jul 13, 2007

Does 2005 have some kind of new feature that audits/monitors changes to a database kind of like an antivirus or something.
Reason for question:
1) inserting records into database, 1000 records takes about 2 minutes.
2) reading those 1000 records takes about 45 seconds
3) updating those 1000 records takes about 15 minutes
4) yes we are using ntwdblib.dll and a 4gl language

i was running a test program to add, read, update, delete 1000 records and that is when i noticed that insert, update, delete took a performance hit whereas reading didnt. i ran my test program on a control server (in house) and then at the clients side(matching OS, MSSQL 2005 SP2). Results from test program: The UPDATE process on client side took about 4x longer, INSERT about 2x longer, DELETE about 1.5x longer, READ was actually faster on the clients system.
so this made me wonder if their was some kind of database monitoring/auditing going on.

SQL2005 Database Mailer Problem

Hi there,

Got a 2005 SP1 SQL box, with database mailer giving problems. In the sysmail_event_log is has

1) Exception Information =================== Exception Type: System.NullReferenceException Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Error: 14667, Severity: 16, State: 1. (Params:). The error is printed in terse mode because there was error during formatting. Tracing, ETW, notifications etc are skipped.

whenever it is trying to send an email. The only way to get this to start sending mail is to run the databasemail90.exe file, so the profiles security etc seem ok. It's just that after the SQL box gets restarted

that it gives all these problems and then it needs some tinkering before it starts to work again.

So anybody got any ideas or tops on what can be done to help sort this out?

Thanks!

Intermittent Locks

Nov 23, 2004

We are experiencing problems intermittently.

Users report problems of various types including timeout messages. We investigate and find a user has acquired a lock which is blocking other users.

We contact the user and they have usually completed their activity and are not always aware of any problem despite them owning a lock.

When the user logs out of the application the lock clears and the system returns to normal.

Indexes have been rebuilt, auto update statistics is on.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Win2K Users Cannot Connect To SQL2005 Database

Feb 5, 2007

Hi,

I recently migrated our database from Access to SQL Server 2005. All the WinXP users can connect to the new SQL2005 database. But all the Win2K machines fail to log on. To diagnose the problem, I tried to connect from a Wind2K machine using an .udl file. The connection failed because "a provider failed to initialize".

The SQL2005 server is residing on a WinXP machine. Users log on via SQL Server authentication layer using a dedicated login that only has read/write privileges to one specific database.

Does anyone know a solution? Thanks in adance.

Backup Plan For A SQL2005 Mirrored Database.

Sep 7, 2007

Heya all,

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, etc., please point me in the right direction if it has 'cos I couldn't find it!

Right, we have a mirrored database with full safety and a witness for automatic fail over, all works fine, very impressed with it. Now I need to backup the database involved and this is where I could do with some help and answers and/or tips.

As the mirror database is off-line/recovering it seems you can't back that one up, but I'd like to have something that tries to back it up for if/when it fails over and becomes the primary. The solution I've used for now is to write a small .Net application that uses the client side fail over connection string (Data Source=Server1;Failover Partner=Server2) so that it connects to whatever system is currently the primary, and then issues the relevant 'BACKUP xxx' statements to backup the database.

This applications is launched from a windows scheduled task job on the hour (or near to it), every hour. At 06:00 it does a full backup, at 12:00, 18:00 and 00:00 it does a differential backup, and all other times it does a transaction log backup.

This all seems to work fine so far, and generates all the relevant backup files to a share on another server.

So, my main question is; does this look like a good plan? Am I missing some really simple wizard or button that would backup the relevant database from whatever server is up?

Secondly, are the backups from each server interchangeable as they're in a mirrored configuration? That is, for example, the backup application (on the hour) connects to Server1 does a full back up, followed later by a log backup. Server1 then dies, so the next time the backup application runs it connects to Server2 and because of the current time does a log backup from Server2. If we had to restore from backups, could we use the full backup and log from Server1, followed by the log from Server2? Otherwise I'll guess I'll need to modify the logic for the backup application to detect it's failed over, and maybe do a full backup on Server2, or something like that.

Anyway, thanks for any help/advice/tips,

Gareth/OhGod

Database Loads Very Slow

Aug 23, 2000

I have a database that's 2.5GB but only has about 17MB of actual data. I've setup a standby server that I load my dumps into. The load takes about 10 miuntes. The dump takes about a minute and a half (which also seems slow to me for that small amount of data). I don't expect that it should take that long to load 8800 pages into a database. The standby server is the same hardware as the production server (sinlge 500MHz Xeon, 2GB RAM, RAID 5). The server has only a single RAID 5 array to store all the OS, and all the SQL data however, I still don't thinkit should take thta long to load. Let me know what you think.

Slow Database Update

Nov 23, 2007

I have designed a 22 table database in sql server that is to act as a backup/alternate access to the data we have stored in an ADABAS database. I've also written a vb.net console program that will take data from ADABAS through a broker connection (one row at a time), checks the sql server database to see if that information is already stored, and then either performs an insert or an update.

I can write the rows from ADABAS to a text file (not using the broker), at the rate of about 1.3 million rows in 1.3 hours. Data can be imported (I'm not sure how this import is done, possibly via a CSV file. SELECTS/UPDATES are not done, just INSERTS) at about 1 million or so an hour. But when I do the update, receiving information via the broker from ADABAS to the VB program (with it's SELECT, then UPDATE/INSERT), I'm only doing about 20-25 thousand rows an hour.

I ran a trace using the SQL Server Analyzer on the database while running the update program, and then ran Profiler using the generated workload. It created a few indices, but I just restarted the update program (I'm still developing, so I delete all rows from all tables each time I rerun the update), but I haven't seen that it's really any faster.

I have a rather large set of data to transfer over, and this 20-25 thousand row time is not nearly fast enough.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
