Internal Memory Increased; SQL Server Does Not Use This
Jul 20, 2005
Hi, recently we increased our internal memory from 2 to 3.5 GB.
Nevertheless, SQL Server does not seem to use this extra memory.
Do we have to do something extra ???
I've read already every thread in this forum regarding this topic with no results.
SQLServer and the corresponding services are at actual update level. The reporting services worked for 4 months without this problem. Suddenly, most of the time all reports return an internal error (it is like 70-30 for internal error) not depending which render format is used.
The system logs (eventlog, iis) show no errors. The ExecutionLog of RS show rsInternalError.
Looking in the log files in RS log directory, there is following stacktrace:
I did a load testing and found the following observations:
1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.
2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory
Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?
Hello....Can someone help me please?I had a mdf file with 48 Mb...and suddenly, the size of it increasedto 690 Mb (without any action or movement of data)...Why could it be done?....is there any solution for thar?Thank you.Tony
Hi,I want to setup one of the fields in a table so it incrementssequentially(int data type). i.e the first record should be record 1and the second one should be 2 and so on. This field will also be thekey field. I am new to SQL and don't know how to do this.I am using SQL server 2000.Thanks for the help in advance.-S
sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??
Database size increased from 600GB to 1000 GB in 4 hours. There was no process running. I am not able to understand why would database size increase in 4 hours.
Yesterday night, I rebuilded all indexes one a table since they were having high percentage of fragmentation . After rebuilding, I immediately checked the fragmentation percentage and it got reduced and I felt happy. However, when i saw the percentage of fragmentation after 6 hours, it increased from 1% to 48%. How to find what caused the increase and how to fix it.
i have a field Count that i want it to be automatically increased by 1 whenever a SELECT stament is called. i come out with the following sql query and it works on SQL Query Analyzer:
declare @count int select @count = count+1 from pictures_posts where itemtype='3' update pictures_posts set count=@count where itemtype='3' select postID, color, count from pictures_posts where itemtype='3' go
but i am thinking it must be a much better to do this. can you guys help?
Does any one know what could be making the size of a backup get so big in SQL server?
I noticed if you back-up the same database in Enterprise Manager over and over (without making any changes to the database), the size of the backup gets bigger and bigger. To get around this I simply erase the backup and create a new one.
Now I'm experiencing the same kind of problem, different situation. I decided to make very few changes to my database. If anything, I shrunk the size of the tables and stored procedures.... Now all of a sudden my database backup is 7 times larger.
What could be increasing the size so much, if I haven't increased the amount of tables or stored procedures?
What is the log file about? Mine is huge? Is there a way to reset it or clear it?
I was running out of space and thus deleted some rows from a table. To my surprise the db size increased. I then shrunk it to bring it back to what it was earlier.
When i deleted some 5000 rows, some space must have been released. Where did the space go and why did the db size increase after deleting the records?
I thght it might be log files..but db is set to Simple Recovery which does not utilize a Log File.
Why I see absolutely no performance improvement when I spread my primary file group over 8 separate files on 8 separate disks, as opposed to having the primary file group all in one file on one disk.
I have set up 2 identical databases, one spread over 8 disks and one on one disk. Each database has a table called DATA and a column called VALUE. Value is NVARCHAR(200). I have filled each table up in both databases with 20,000 rows.
I then perform a select on each table in each database using CHECKPOINT and DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS to ensure I am reading from disk before each query and the execution times are identical in both databases.
I then ran the same queries against each database using a load testing tool and the batch requests per second on each DB is identical under load.
Surely the database with data spread over 8 disks should be FAR faster than the single file database as you have the combined reading power of 8 disks as opposed to 2??
Also, the same is happening for write speeds. When I create the data on both databases, the time it takes is identical on both.
BOL says it should be faster with multiple disks.
Just FYI this is on an Azure virtual machine and each disk is a locally redundant data disk that I have attached to the virtual machine.
Whether write speeds should increase with multiple disks or just read speeds?
I have the following code and I keep on getting the following error: Internal SQL Server error. Line 160: da.Fill(dtStudent) <code> Private Function CreateStudentDT() As DataTable

HELP! I ran a script that performed a rather large (and lengthy) update and alter with the result being correct however, now a number of stored procedures return an "Internal SQL Server Error" containing joins to the above altered tables? Has anyone hit this before? Does the error really mean a SQL Server problem or database specific problem? Does anyone know how to remidy the situation?
Can someone pleplease run the script below in SQL2K environment with SP3+ applied and see if you get the same error:create view dbo.vw_INTERNAL_ERROR asselect top 100 percent * from( select [DateField]=getdate()) x1 order by x1.[DateField]goif exists(select 1 from dbo.vw_INTERNAL_ERROR)print 'Exists'elseprint 'Doesn''t Exist'godrop view dbo.vw_INTERNAL_ERRORgo I am getting this: Msg 8624, Level 16, State 23, Line 1Internal SQL Server error. But in SQL2K5 it prints 'Exists' correctly. Thanks in advance.

Here's a quick and dirty example of a legitimate bug in SQL Server.I've seen other examples, but they were all very complex, some eveninvolving cursors and such. This one will produce the error with just13 lines.A police department has a database that contains, among other things, information about parking tickets given out by the officers. Here isthe database and some sample data:create table ParkingTickets (TicketDate datetime,IssuingOfficer int)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/2/2005 12:31',1)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/2/2005 14:20',1)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/3/2005 12:05',1)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/3/2005 12:22',2)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/3/2005 14:01',2)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/4/2005 10:12',2)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/2/2005 12:10',3)insert into ParkingTickets values ('1/4/2005 12:36',3)So, as you can see, officer 1 gave out three tickets. Officer 2 gaveout three, etc. Management wants a report containing the followinginformation;the Hour of Day,the ID of the Issuing Officer, the number of tickets issued by the officer during this hour during theweek, and the average number of tickets issued by all officers during thishour during the weekSo, if the report is to cover 1/2/2005 through 1/5/2005, the reportwould look like this:selectdatepart(hh,TicketDate) as HourOfDay,IssuingOfficer, count(*) as TicketsIssuedByThisOfficer,TotalTicketsForThisHour_AllOfficers = (select convert(real, count(*))/3from ParkingTicketswhere datepart(hh,TicketDate) = datepart(hh,PT.TicketDate)and TicketDate between '1/2/2005' and '1/5/2005')from ParkingTickets PTwhere TicketDate between '1/2/2005' and '1/5/2005'group by IssuingOfficer, datepart(hh,TicketDate)order by HourOfDay, IssuingOfficerdrop table ParkingTicketsif you'll run that in Query Analyzer, you'll see that it works justfine and produces the expected output. However, if you delete thisline:count(*) as TicketsIssuedByThisOfficer, the query errors out. It's almost like magic. With the count(*)there, the query runs. Without it, the query fails. I can't see anyreason why deleting that line would produce an error. There aremultiple references to this on the microsoft kb, and many of them havehotfixes. But none of them seems to fix this particular instance ofthe bug - and like I said, this is the simplest incarnation that I'veseen.Christopher Secord
In the code below I get an Internal SQL Server error in QueryAnalyzer. Ultimately I want to get thos code working in a function.DECLARE @WeekNumber tinyintDECLARE @Comp decimal(18,2)DECLARE @PeriodFromDate datetimeDECLARE @PeriodToDate datetimeSET @WeekNumber = 27SET @PeriodFromDate = (SELECT MIN(StartDate) AS StartDate FROMCalendar WHERE WeekNumber = @WeekNumber)SET @PeriodToDate = (SELECT MAX(EndDate) AS StartDate FROM CalendarWHERE WeekNumber = @WeekNumber)SET @Comp = (SELECT SUM(ActualGrossComp)FROM dbo.fnc_ProgramLineUp_1_2()WHERE Delay > 0AND ClearanceCode <> 3AND TeleCastDate BETWEEN @PeriodFromDate AND PeriodToDate)But this code runs fine:DECLARE @WeekNumber tinyintDECLARE @Comp decimal(18,2)DECLARE @PeriodFromDate datetimeDECLARE @PeriodToDate datetimeSET @WeekNumber = 27SET @PeriodFromDate = (SELECT MIN(StartDate) AS StartDate FROMCalendar WHERE WeekNumber = @WeekNumber)SET @PeriodToDate = (SELECT MAX(EndDate) AS StartDate FROM CalendarWHERE WeekNumber = @WeekNumber)SELECT SUM(ActualGrossComp)FROM dbo.fnc_ProgramLineUp_1_2()WHERE Delay > 0AND ClearanceCode <> 3AND TeleCastDate BETWEEN @PeriodFromDate AND PeriodToDateThe only difference is that here I'm not setting @Comp to the returnvalue of the SELECT. This code also runs fine when I sum othercolumns. Any ideas?
I've been unsuccessful getting Reporting Services 2005 to work after reinstalling SQL 2005. The RS service cannot connect to its database, as reported in the Event Log. If I visit http://localhost/Reports, I get the error "Key not valid for use in specified state. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009000B) (rsRPCError)"
I've used the RS Config Mgr to create a fresh database for it named SSRS (and SSRSTembDB), and it is set to use Service Credentials in the db connection. The RS service is running using the same admin account as MSSQL, .SQLExec. I have confirmed that .SQLExec is in the RSExecRole role in the SSRS database.
When I created the SSRS database, the Config Mgr had a green check for every step except the last. For "Setting Connection Info for the Reporting Server" there was a yellow '!', with the explanation, "Although saving the database connection succeeded, the report server cannot access internal information about this deployment to determine if the current configuration is valid for this edition. ..."
I examined rsreportserver.config to look for any issues. The <dsn> element has an encrypted string, the <ConnectionType> element says "Default", and the logon elements are empty. I could not find the db names, SSRS and SSRSTempDB, anywhere in the file. Where are these kept? I don't know what else to look for.
Also, in RS Config Mgr, the 'Encryption Keys' page has a blue '!', and only the 'Restore' and 'Delete' buttons are enabled. The 'Initialization' page has a red 'X'. The local RS is not listed (the grid is empty), and clicking the 'Initialize' button does nothing.
I have enabled custom authorization in SQL server 2005 reporting services. If i try to view the reports thru report manager by using the url http://localhost/reports then i'm getting the error message as
"An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

If i try to view the reports by using reportserver url http://localhost/reportserver then its working fine. Please help me in resolving this issue.

Hi All,I am accessing a linked server (also a SQL Server) from a storedprocedure. There is an insert statement that I run on a table in thelinked server. This statement causes the Internal SQL Server error. Butif I run the insert statement separately from Query Analyzer, it worksfine! Also, I put the stored procedure directly into the database onthe linked SQL Server and it ran fine on it. Has anybody come acrosssomething of this sort? Thanks,Sanjeev
I have a simple SP that returns 2 columns with 4 inner joins, results are about 100 odd rows max, nothing complicated. When I run the SP via SSMS it works fine, as soon as this is run via an application server the SP fails to complete with the error :
Internal error: An expression services limit has been reached. Please look for potentially complex expressions in your query, and try to simplify them.
We are not getting anywhere near the expression limit so I cannot understand why we are suddenly receiving this error. 2 weeks ago this query was running fine, no updates have been rolled out to the SQL database servers or application servers but the error is suddenly appearing on both prod and dev environments.
We've got a strange problem. We are running on SQL 2000 SP4. Our structure uses database pairs, we have a Current and a History database so old records that don't change and aren't needed very often are only loaded into memory when needed.
The following query (the names have been changed) deletes the quote from the current database when the order raised from the quote has been moved into the history.
Code Snippet DELETE FROM t_CurrentUnpaid FROM db_Mule_History.dbo.t_History INNER JOIN t_Quote ON db_Mule_History.dbo.t_History.uid = t_Quote.uid INNER JOIN t_CurrentUnpaid ON t_Quote.uid_Parent = t_CurrentUnpaid.uid where t_CurrentUnpaid.uid_cont != -2
This query runs fine on 4 identical database pairs, on the 5th pair it fails. All these pairs are on the same server, with the same permissions and the exact same structure. Only the data would differ
The error returned is: Internal server error 8624 level 16 state 1 line 1
We have looked at MS articles, but all that I can find are about bugs fixed in SP1, 2, 3 and 4. Nothing post SP4 that we are running.
We've had Reporting Services running in a production environ. for 6 months fine, but from Saturday every report now causes the following error (in both the Report Manager and Soap calls):
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help
Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: date
Now, before you jump to conclusions - this error is occurring on reports with both parameters and no parameters (ie in reports that have no "date" parameter in the report).
The next bit of info is the weird bit...
It was working on Friday (25/March/2006) - so as a test, i switched the servers clock back to Friday - and BINGO... it worked. Then I changed it to Saturday (26th March) and it doesnt work. In fact for the next 7 days - the service will not work until April 2nd 2006 - (when I changed the systems date to the 2nd it worked again.) Moving forward, it looks like its working fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions? This is in a production environment, so obviously changing the sytsem date as a quick fix workaround wont suffice.

I have a sharepoint on a windows internal database server (some version of sql express 2005). When I run the app, it says that I need SQL server reporting services 2005. I dont think that this component is bundled with "windows internal database server". Is there anyway I can download this component or otherwise make this work?
Seems a bit silly that they would make a tool requiring a component that doesnt need to be installed for sharepoint to run.
I got Form Authentication to work, but I am getting this error sometimes. To reproduce this error consistantly is to run iisreset.exe to have a fresh start. Go to my report server login and open any report.
The page will display: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.
If i click "F5" to refresh the page the report will show up or if you go to another report it will work also. It is just the first time after iisreset.exe. It is very strange.
