International Databases And Cleanliness

Hello!
This is a new problem to me being a junior, and I'm quite sure this is a problem that will occur for more and more people as time goes on.
My company has offices from around the world, and naturally there are databases all over the place. We have a main one which the sites run off here in the UK, otherwise we use SAP (like so many others) and Viper. There are also apparently Marketing databases which I have never even seen...
There is a nightly import into the main databases, but its choking fairly regularly and the data we are getting out is outright filthy.
Anyway, the boss wants a "data firewall" with a rules engine sitting on top controlling what is clean and what is not. Sounds great, but I don't really know where to start. Does anyone have any advice on a design for this? We are currently using SQL Server 2000 but should be moving to 2005 very shortly (not 2008 it seems :-( ).
Is this something I can develop in a .net language or can it be done purely on a SQL Server basis? Keep in mind the rules engine which should have a useable interface for a techie who is not heavily trained in SQL Server (like a .net developer).

Quick background....
I have a file that is currently in Bulgarian (not unicode) that we want to import into a development environment for testing. However, the only way I can view the file as "non-gibberish" is for me to switch my local settings (on the OS) to Bulgarian. Then of course the file is readable in Bulgarian.
Now they have sent the following snipet of code asking if I can somehow add this to the DTS package? The purpose of this code is to...
They're sending me a C# routine to transpose the 10 or so Bulgarian-specific characters in the text fields.
They hope we can include this routine in the DTS package.

hi all
We are a multi site / multi language company so do not want to hardcode the date format - these reports will be on intranet
Using MS Sql - Reporting Services 2005
RecvdDate field = yyyy-mm-dd - is how it is displayed.
I added a @startdate and an @enddate parameter and am using the
calendar - so a user picks off the calendar
I read up and saw this information:
Report properties set
'Language' setting to '=User!Language' to detect user
culture automatically
My regional settings are set to English (New Zealand)
but whatever I do I receive no data - (data is definately there eg when run without parameters) so it is obviously the parameter that is incorrect.
Can someone give me some advice on what else to check.

I will doing an installation of MS SQL 2000 that will be used by multilanguage web sites.The languages are Japanese, German and of course English.Currently I'm planning to install MS SQL 2000 standard version butafter reading some articles I'm considering the Enterprise version.Can someone shed some light on the advantages of using Enterprise vsStandard strictly from a language support perspective?Also, is there any caveats or other considerations that I should keepin mind to make sure that the developers have all they need to developthese multi language sites?Thanks in advance.

I have to create a database (SQL2005) for multinational usage (Western, Eastern and asian langages included).
This database will be used by an international application.
Here are my questions :
* All the "wording" of the application will come from NVARCHAR database fields.
However, for database fields which will not store any possibilities of special characters (and will not be shown on the application), should I also use NVARCHAR fields ?
(Then, the database will mix unicode and non unicode strings)
* The database must be replicated (transactional or Merge) with an "old" non international database on SQL 2000.
Schemas are near the same, only datatype are different (varchar --> nvarchar).
Then, should I use a SQL collation instead of Windows Collation as advised on MSDN ?

(MS tells to use Windows collation if the database has unicode and and non-unicode strings, but It also tells to use SQL collation to maintain compatibility with earlier versions of SQL)

HI all.
I have a web service that does an SQL select against a database that contains international data, however when this is displayed from the web service the text such as "Rue Emile Féron 168" is not shown correctly and the 'é' is shown as a comma. Can someone advise what changes I need to make to the coding. Also our own tables have varchar fields and I'm assuming the "é" data will be saved correctly ???

I use datetime condition in sql-query. For example:select something from sometablewhere date between '06/15/04 00:00:00' and '06/15/04 23:59:59'and result on two synchronized servers is different.In USA server result contains where date equal '06/14/04' only,but Russian server gives where date equal '06/15/04'.I read mysql online book article 'Writing International Transact-SQL Statements'and not found any recommendations how solve this problem.Thanks for any help.

I am developing an application using C#.NET that accesses a remote database that that contains japanese characters.
My sample querry is strCommand = "SELECT * FROM table WHERE prodname = 'ＣＲ新海物語スペシャルï¼ï¼˜'";
The result of querry displayed in the binded datagrid also contains other rows that has this prodname:
ＣＲＦ湯�むり紀行ＳＦ�Ｔ
ＣＲ��ん��イサイＶＲ１

etc.

i've worked with SQL Databases for years now, but never needed to deal with international characters. Â I am trying to search strings like surname in a column that might have international letters/characters, such as:
select * from [dbo].[User] where LastName like '%HekimoÄŸlu%'
It doesn't retrieves anything. Â I've googled for while in a hope to find some solution quickly, but to my surprise I couldn't. how to query string columns that include international characters such as above.I am using SQL Server 2012, Nvarchar(100) for column.

Could anyone provide me an example of the effective way of design a database support multiple languages. Currently I working to design a database for travel website which support 3 different languages, and more languages will be added in in the future. One of my friend advice me to put different languages into the same table for example
Table Hotel
ID
Description_EN
Description_ES
Description_FR
Location_EN
Location_ES
Location_FR
....
But I don't thing it's a good idea to do so since in the future if I would like to add more languages I have to modify the table and I have to replace all of the sql statements. I am seeking for the best solution , could anyone help.

Dear Readers,Is it possible, like in Access, to link to tables in other SQL databases that are on the same server? I have a query that I originally had in Access that queered from multiply databases. It did this by having those other tables in the other databases linked to the database that had the query.

I just restored my SQL server 2000 database on the SQL server 2005. after this i ran the Service broker sample ("Hello World") on this database by changing the AdventureWorks name to the new database name. The "setup.sql" runs fine. When i run the "SendMessage.sql" i was not getting any rows in the output (The message was not getting inserted into the queue). I checked the Service broker is enabled on this databased using the query "select is_broker_enabled from sys.databases where name = 'newdbname' " It was 1. I even tried the ALTER DATABASE SET ENABLE_BROKER. but it didnt work.
When i tried the sample on a newly created database it worked fine.
Is there any solution to make the restored database to work for service broker.

I have created a site which now has two databases. Firstly is the ASPNETDB.MDF which I beleives get set to manage the security, logon/Roles that I have on my site. The second dataabase "MyDatabase" is one that I have created for all my data withing the site. I would like to combine this to one Database for simplicity and cost. Now I can't see the ASPNETDB.MDF when I use SQL Manager 2005 and I can't see how to change the set up of ASP.Net Configuration if I was to just use mydatabase. Any suggestions

Hi, I have my site set up, but have had difficulty using the data gathered by the aspnet.mdf. I wanted to use the email and username columns from the membership table to send newsletters automatically from the database(but that's a whole other post)I also have my own databse, which will be populated by information gathered from the website, so is currently empty. I'd like to take this opportunity to say that i don't think there's enough information given on how to populate a blank database from a website application. Most tuorials etc are concentrated on retrieving and displaying data, which is all well and good, once you actually have data to play with!I don't need two databases, so can I add tables to the aspnet.mdf ? But then what about relationships etc? I won't damage the current relationships by adding new ones? On the other hand can i copy the aspnet.mdf into my own database, and then assign the relevant permissions to that db? Any help would be greatly appreciated-in language for newbies please! I am relatively new to .asp.net/Visual Basic/ and SQL. It's a steep learning curve!Also....I have used create user wizard, login, password recovery etc within my site, the data is inserted into the correct db tables-without using an sql datasource for some reason...? is that right?I have also created a wizard to collect some more data (because i couldn't work out how to insert the data from the extra steps in create user wizard, into my own database) but when i click submit the data is not inserting into the specified table - (yes the connection string is fine, insert and update has been selected from the advance tab in connections wizard). Would this/could this be because i have assigned a 'finishbutton url'? should i use a Response.Redirect("blahblah.aspx") instead?

I’m using VB6 as the client and MS SQL Server 7 as the database. The company I’m consulting for has a proven track record for marketing and getting millions of customers. The parent company would like to create two new companies selling the same product; with 1 million customers per company. How many records can MS SQL Server 7 handle? I’ve been told it can handle 4 terabytes. What does 4 terabytes translate into records? I have already set up an application for company #1. Should I put company #2 in the same MS SQL Server database? Or should I put company #2 in a different database? My VB Application and SQL Server database were designed to handle multiple companies selling the same product. For performance sake; would it be better to separate the databases? Any suggestions? Is anyone currently using MS SQL Server with 2 or more million records?

Hello,
Is it possible to restore a 6.5 database to a 7.0? I backup the entire 6.5 database to a BAK file then tried to restore it to SQL 7.0 but it didn't work. SQL 7.0 states that the disk device is not a valid Microsoft Tape Format backup set.
We have an application that was developped long long time ago by a old team and I don't want to upgrade the server. I tried to build a second 6.5 server (new hardware) but I couldn't restore the database as SQL 6.5 states that the server is in single user mode. I don't know how to switch to multi users mode. The database I want to restore is not in DBO or single user mode.
Any help will be appreciated.

I'm writing an app in vs2005 using sql express. This may be the wrong forum for this question, but here it is. I'm going to have several tables: Seven for Customer information, six for Employee information, 15 for Misc Definitions (status types, skill types, discipline types, gender types, etc.) and 10 for Scheduling information. This is a total of 38 tables.
Is there any advantage to having four databases, one for each type, or should I put all 38 tables in one database and add relationships to everything?

Hello Everyone:
I am testing SQL Sever Express and I would like to know how to load the adventure works databaes into SQL server? I have downloaded the files in accordance to the instructions providered however, when I open SQL Server the Adventure Works database does not appear. How do I add the adventure works database to my instance of SQL Server? It appears that the files downloaded correclty and teh setup executed correclty, and the database files can be found in my control panel.
