Interview Question-How To Identity Existing Data For Updating In SSIS?
Feb 26, 2008
I have met the interview question, I provide answer like the following from my experience. I don't know it is correct or need to supplement. Thank you for help.
Question: How to identity existing data for updating in SSIS?
Answer:
If you have the same key columns such as primary key or business key, you just use them to identify existing records from data source to destination.
If you use different key columns between data source and destination, you can create permanent link table which will store business key for data source and destination, and you can compare records from linking table when you update data.

Hi,
I could use some help on how to save the result of my data-flow in an existing table.
I have created a data flow. I have no trouble storing the result of the flow in a new table. But I'm trying to store the result of my data flow in an existing table. (The flow involves fuzzy grouping, and i would like to store the result in the original table on which the fuzzy grouping was performed). But I cannot get it to work.
I can select the existing table as OLE DB destination. I can write an SQL to manipulate this table, but how do i address the result of the flow in the SQL?
Help is welcome here!

I have a following problem: I€™m importing records from an Access table into a SQL Server Table. I€™m using lookup to determine if a record already exists in the SQL Server table and in that case I should update the record if it was modified.
I thought of using OLE DB Destination for new records (done, works fine) and OLE DB Command Transformation to update the modified records. It all works but the thing that bothers me is that my table has approx. 40 columns so my OLE DB Command is very long (update table set col1 = ?, col2 = ?, col3 = ? €¦€¦). The other problem is that I€™m always updating all the columns even if only one column was modified.
Is there a better way to update the existing records?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanx
Sara

I have a SSIS package that simply moves data from a SQL database A to another SQL database B. I have update (increased) the size of a nvarchar column, on both A and B.I am wondering if there is a way to "refresh" somehow the SSIS package so I don't have to rebuild and redeploy it.The error I get now is a truncation error: "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page".

Hi JayH (or anyone). Another week...a new set of problems. I obviously need to learn .net syntax, but because of project deadlines in converting from DTS to SSIS it is hard for me to stop and do that. So, if someone could help me some easy syntax, I would really appreciate it.
In DTS, there was a VBScript that copied a set of flat files from one directory to an archive directory after modifying the file name. In SSIS, the directory and archive directory will be specified in the config file. So, I need a .net script that retrieves a file, renames it and copies it to a different directory.
Linda
Here is the old VBScript Code:
Public Sub Main()
Option Explicit
Function Main()
Dim MovementDataDir
Dim MovementArchiveDataDir
Dim MovementDataFile
Dim MovementArchiveDataFile
Dim FileNameRoot
Dim FileNameExtension, DecimalLocation
Dim CurMonth, CurDay
Dim FileApplicationDate
Dim fso ' File System Object
Dim folder
Dim FileCollection
Dim MovementFile
'======================================================================
'Create text strings of today's date to be appended to the archived file.
FileApplicationDate = Now
CurMonth = Month(FileApplicationDate)
CurDay = Day(FileApplicationDate)
If Len(CurMonth) = 1 Then
CurMonth = "0" & CurMonth
End If
If Len(CurDay) = 1 Then
CurDay = "0" & CurDay
End If
FileApplicationDate = CurMonth & CurDay & Year(FileApplicationDate)
'=====================================================================
' Set the movement data directory from the global variable.
MovementDataDir = DTSGlobalVariables("gsMovementDataDir").Value
MovementArchiveDataDir = DTSGlobalVariables("gsMovementDataArchiveDir").Value
fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
folder = fso.GetFolder(MovementDataDir)
FileCollection = folder.Files
' Loop through all files in the data directory.
For Each MovementFile In FileCollection
' Get the full path name of the current data file.
MovementDataFile = MovementDataDir & "" & MovementFile.Name
' Get the full path name of the archive data file.
MovementArchiveDataFile = MovementArchiveDataDir & "" & MovementFile.Name
DecimalLocation = InStr(1, MovementArchiveDataFile, ".")
FileNameExtension = Mid(MovementArchiveDataFile, DecimalLocation, Len(MovementArchiveDataFile) - DecimalLocation + 1)
FileNameRoot = Mid(MovementArchiveDataFile, 1, DecimalLocation - 1)
MovementArchiveDataFile = FileNameRoot & "_" & FileApplicationDate & FileNameExtension
If (fso.FileExists(MovementDataFile)) Then
fso.CopyFile(MovementDataFile, MovementArchiveDataFile)
' If the archive file was coppied, then delete the old copy.
If (fso.FileExists(MovementArchiveDataFile)) Then
fso.DeleteFile(MovementDataFile)
End If
End If
Next
fso = Nothing
folder = Nothing
FileCollection = Nothing
Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success
End Function

I currently have a table called stores. I've just added a uniqueidentifier column called store_guid to the stores table. The table currently has about 500 records in it and now i'm trying to set each store_guid = to a newid(). I've tried using UPDATE stores SET store_guid = newid() . however, that doesn't work because i think it's trying to set each record equal to the same guid using that approach. All i need to do is fill in my new column with new guids. any ideas?
Thanks in advance,

Table 1:
------- Â Â -----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----
Name    Add          No        RowID
-------Â Â Â Â -----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â -------
aa    #a-1,India                             10
bb    #a-1,India                     11               Â
aa    #a-1,India                             12
----------------------------------------------------
 table 1 inserting to Table 2 (Using 1st Data flow)
Table 2:
------- Â Â -----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----
Name    Add         ID(Note:Here Identity1,1)
-------Â Â Â Â -----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----
aa    #a-1,India                1
bb    #a-1,India                2
aa    #a-1,India                3
----------------------------------------------------
My Requirement is Update Table 1 set Column::No=Table 2.ID
                                                                      Â
based on Exact Match of
                                                                       Â
Table1.Name=Table2.Name and
                                                                       Â
Table1.Add=Table2.Add
It means Get back the Id for Source Table 1
 2nd Data flow
       Source(Table1:Name, Add,No)
                   |
  --LOOKUP(Table2:Name, Add::Matched Look Columns Name, Add and
Tick Mark on ID)
                        |(Match)
  -->OLEDB Command: update Table1 set N0=? where RowID=?(Here Param_0= NO ,Param_1=RowID)
Here My Issue is if Table 1 had Duplicates(same Name, Add, but Row Id is different it is Updating Same ID for Table 1.No It means Get Back ID correctly not updating Result::
Table 1:
------- Â Â -----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----
Name    Add          No        RowID
-------Â Â Â Â -----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ----Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â -------
aa    #a-1,India               1             10
bb    #a-1,India              2       11               Â
aa    #a-1,India              1 12
----------------------------------------------------
My correct Output is   3    instead of Result:Table1 1.NO  1  where RowID =12
It caused by LOOKUP , It picking Top1 ID while Matching Look on fields.
How Should I update the (Identity) Get Back Table 2.ID to Source Table1. NOÂ in Above logic in SSIS?

Has anybody ever tried to do this. I can't figure it out. All I want to do is take an existing table that already has values in the column that I want to change and add the identity property to yes and set the identity seed and increment to a specific number. I know you can do it in the CREATE TABLE statement but is there a way to use the ALTER TABLE command?

Hi, I have the lovely task of overhauling some of our SQL-based systems. I've found many tables that don't have unique identifying numbers that really should have them. I've searched around and people keep mentioning the Identity field as being similar to Autonumber in Access. The only examples I could find involved setting up a new table... but I need to add (and populate) an identity column to an existing database table. Does anyone know the command for this?
Example... my table is called PACountyTown. It currently has 3 columns: County, Town, and Area. I wish to call the identity-ish field RecordID.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
How to Change Increment Value for existing Identity Column (MS SQL2000) ?
I know how to change the seed :
DBCC CHECKIDENT (activity, RESEED,4233596)
but I need the future id generated with step 2
4233596
4233598
4233600
I would like to do it using T-sql because I will need to do it every day after syncronising with another SQL server .
Thanks,

I have an existing old SSIS Solution that needs to be updated with MDX query. In the query I am using every thing as is but changing  only the filter condition. When I try to Preview the data on data flow task, I am getting below error.Â
Outputs[OLE DB Source Output] references an external data type that cannot be mapped to a Data Flow task data type. The Data Flow task data type DT_WSTR will be used instead.
Package without MDX query update is running fine and no issues. I am using SQL Server 2014 and SSDT 12.0.50318.0 version for your info.
I tried updating SSAS connection string with "Format=Tabular" which was missing earlier and still didn't work.

I am working with a table in SQL server. I have a column that I want to designateas an identity column. I am not able to do this, because the field for "Identity Specification" is not editiable.
What I did was I went to sql server, right clicked and selected "Modify".The column properties dialog box/edit grid is then displayed with attributesthat I can modify.
There are two major nodes in this dialog box. One is named "General" and the otheris named "Table Designer". I expand the "Table Designer" node and then go to the node labeled "Identity Specification" It is here where I would like to edit thevalues.
The values that are listed for edit are listed below. BUT, the problem is thatI can place my cursor in those fields, but I am not able to change/edit them.Can anyone tell me what the problem is here? and how I can fix it?
+Identity Specification (Is Identity) Identity Increment Identity Seed

We want to add a new int identity column as a primary key to an already existing table that has a primary key on Guid. Here is the DDL:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[VRes](
[VResID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL,
[Mes] [varchar](max) NOT NULL,
[PID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL,
[Segt] [int] NOT NULL,
[code]....
Also we currently have 3 million rows on this table. Is having an integer column as identity column and primary key better or shd I consider using BigInt?

Please excuse my ignorance. I've researched this and it appears I am asking to do something that is ridiculous, so please let me know what is wrong with my design (or my brain). I'd like to update an ID number in a table. It is an identity column. In my solution I'm adding a lot of new entries into my table and deleting old ones. Call me anal, but It's driving me nuts that my ID numbers are growing so large so quickly and that I have so many unused ID's. If you were to look over my data ID's they would be something like 1,3,45,78,88,89,103,140,219. What I'm trying to do is renumber my data so that my data currently at say ID# 1067 can be moved to the unused ID#2, etc. So I either need a way to update an Identity column...or I need a way find the lowest unused number among a list of ID's. So is there anyway to achieve what I am trying to do? I see this guy had my same OCD issue (without a solution) :-(

I am having problems updating my zip code table that contains zip, city, state, long, lat, ect..
I have the latest CSV file, I tried to use the import wizard in SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager.
I set the ID field as <ignore> and specified the appropriate columns for the rest of the data matching from CSV to already designed and working zip code table. Also I checked the box that said "Delete Rows in Destination Table" as well as "Enable Identity Insert" was checked
I ran the wizard, and now I have empty table and it will not insert any records because the error said that the identity column can not accept NULL.
What do I do? I am not updating the identify column so Is it telling me it can't insert NULL into ID?
Any suggestions...
Thanks,
Lito

I am very new to SQL Server 2005. I have created a package to load data from a flat delimited file to a database table. The initial load has worked. However, in the future, I will have flat files used to update the table. Some of the records will need to be inserted and some will need to update existing rows. I am trying to do this from SSIS. However, I am very lost as to how to do this.
Any suggestions?

I re-created a publication that was having problems and it gives this error when I start the snapshot agent from SQL Server Management Studio: I am stuck on how to resolve - any ideas?
"The publisher's identity range allocation entry could not be found in MSmerge_identity_range table. Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates that a commit or ROLLBACK TRANSACTION statement is missing. Previous Count = 1, current count = 2."
select * from MSmerge_identity_range returns 19 entries but I don't know how to fix.
I have tried deleting and re-creating but always get this error.
My other publications and subscriptions are working fine and I was able to create a new test publication that worked but can not get this one to work that worked fine up until today.
Any ideas?
