I thought it was but I just now installed it on a box without IIS. I gather IIS is not a requried component. I noticed only Reporting Services Requires it so I am hoping that installing IIS and then add Reporting Services Component later will not cause configuration problems.

I'd like to install SQL SERVER 2005 Express Edition ,I begin to install it from DVD but during the installation it dosn't ask me about any instance and after installation there isn't SQLExpress service and I can't use sql server .(there are not MSSQL and Binn directory in sql server 2005) but when I install visual studio 2005 and after that I install sql server 2005 it ask me for name of instance and with this way every thing is ok and I use sql server completely.

Hello friends, I have been trying to install SQL Server2005 but I can't. I have .Net framwork 2.0 on my computer. At the end of installation at Reporting Services the following error occurs.
Error: The required version of .Net framwork is not installed.
So first I installed .Net framwork SDK, the problem was same. After that I install .Net framwork 3.0 direct from microsoft but all in vain.
Now I need help about which of the .Net framwork must be installed on computer before installing SQL Server2005.

As the title indicates, I'm having this error during installation. It occurs when I try to install
the "Management Studio" part of the program. I've tried a bunch of things like
copying to hard drive and installing, but to no avail. To isolate the problem, i've even tried removing Reporting services, since at the time of failure it seems to be trying to install/configure the Microsoft.Reporting Services dll.
Additionally, I have SQL Express installed (installed it separately, not as part of the SQL 2005 DVD), VS 2005, .NET Framework 2.0, SQL Management Studio Express CTP. Could the Management Studio Express be causing a problem?
Please note:
Although the error is about missing / corrupt Sql.cab, I have searched the entire dvd for the said file, but there is no file called Sql.cab on the dvd. Am I missing something?
Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

I am using SQL Server 2005 and C#(winforms).
For example if I have a winform with a textbox and search button. If I type in ABCD1234. I won't know what the data is coming into the X Table. So there will be hundreds of description data in the description field in X table.
So in the X Table, there are ABCD1234,ABCD_1234,ABCD/1234,ABCD 1234
But I will only pick this 'ABCD1234' record up, and the rest won't be picked. They are variations of the same description. It needs to pick also ABCD_1234,ABCD/1234,ABCD 1234
If also type in 5678, in another column like code in X Table. It would have 005678,05678,56780. But I will only pick this '5678' record up, and the rest won't be picked. They are variations of the same code.

I have tried LIKE, FREETEXT and CONTAINS.
But another idea is a table of alternate descriptions for those that you know about and look those up and search for them all. But how can that be done?

I was in the phase of switching over to Sql Server Reporting from the normal reports. I plan to go with the SQL server 2005 standard version. Do i need visual studio 2005 to design and deploy report. If I am using only SQL server standard alone for my reporting and publishing, is it possible to assign the user rights to reports, user can just login and can view all the reports that belongs to that user. Since I wont be using the visual Studio 2005, so I want to implement this using the SQL server 2005. So pls help me with your kind information how to proceed ahead.

I have developed a database in MS SQL Server 2005 Express, to which I would require only bulkadmin server role from an external java application, because I only need to update rows, insert values or use select queries in the database.
The problem is that, using either the Microsoft JDBC Driver 1.1 or the Java JDBC ODBC Driver and the Windows XP Data Base (ODBC) configurations, I need a user with sysadmin server role inside Sql Server, otherwise JDBC won't connect to the database using the selected user. Even if I leave the sql login with setupadmin or any server role lower than sysadmin, the connection is refused.
Is there no way to connect using JDBC to MS Sql Server 2005 other than granting the connected user sysadmin rights? My code looks as follows:

I installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional then after that was installed and running, I tried to install the the SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition which installed but I do not get the SQL Server 2005 Studio Manager. I have remove and reinstalled but it never gets installed. Any ideas?

My web project (ASP.NET 2.0 / C#) runs against sql server 2000 and uses the System.Data.SqlClient.using System.Data.SqlClient;
I use System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection and System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand to make the connections to the database and do selects and updates. Is it correct to continue to use these against SQL Server 2005? I ask because I made a connection string (outside of .Net) for SqlServer 2005 using the SQL native provider and it had the following - Provider=SQLNCLI.1 and any connection strings I had made (also outside of ASP.NET) fro SQL Server all used Provider=SQLOLEDB.1. This is why I wondered if there is a different SqlClient in .Net 2.0 for SQL Server 2005?

What are the minimum permissions required by the SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor (UA)? I could not find it in the documentation.
Obviously being a local Administrators Windows group and a member of sysadmin SQL Server role will do the trick.
But will being a member of only the sysadmin SQL Server role be enough? I know that the UA does want to read the registry.
Running it under just sysadmin generates the following type of errors:

The issue then is whether these are significant or not. If the UA is only reading the registry to determine if SSAS, DTS, etc is installed then that is not important. But if it is affecting the end result because it cannot read critical information from the registry that is another matter.

I am developing an application that uses Access database (mdb file) to store the user data. The user of this application is not interested in the database file (to view in MS Access Environment). Does the user machine requires MS Access installation to run my application or just some couple of dlls (OleDB driver, Access DB Engine,..) should be enough to run my application?

I have to install SQL Server 2005 on SBS Standard 2003. I am already running Sql Server Desktop Engine with three instances: MSSQL$SHAREPOINT, MSSQL$SBSMONITORING, MSSQL$BLUECOAT. I trying to Install on Windows XP with Service pack 4, OS.
I am trying to install the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2005 version for which it is not able to load many packages as it says IIS services, Integration Services Etc,. were not installed and if they were ignored then rest will be loaded and thereafter I could not either login or invoke either any.
Can anyone suggest me where it went wrong and what I need to do with instructions.

Unfortunately for me, I am not a DBA - even though I have always filled that role where ever I have been. That being said, I have always been fortunate enough to have someone else more knowledgeable than I to perform the initial build of the SQL Servers I have used and managed. SQL Server 2005 has been installed on windows server 2003 machine by the support team.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.3042.00
Now this machine has been passed on to me to create databases, tables, etc...
On this server, I open the management studio and I get the connect to server windows.
What should the entries in the connect to server window be for me to get to the next stage where I can start building databases.
At present, I tried local or localhost and windows/sql authentication.
Still can not get to the management studio window.
Any thoughts please?

We have the Windows server 2003 R2 Service PAck 2 , we got updated to this version after i installed automatic updates today,and i am having problems with setting up maintenance plan in SQL server 2005 (9.0.1399)
Hence i am trying to install Sql server 2005 SP1, but the read me file says that this installation is compatible only with Windows server 2003 SP1
Also, i received this error when i tried to install SQL server 2005 SP1 yesterday
"The image file hotfix.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine"
I am confused, Can someone help me out in this regard?

I was told by my Dell rep to configure the server with the following drives. 2 - 36GB drives in a RAID 0 (15,000 RPM), 2 - 73GB drives in a RAID 0 (10,000 RPM) and 3 - 146GB drives in a RAID 5 (10,000 RPM). Dell pre-installed the OS on the 36GB drive. I was told to install SQL on the 73GB drives and the data (primarily TIFF images) on the 146GB. The server is a 64bit machine with Windows 2003 Server and 4GB of RAM. I was told to put the transaction logs on a different physical drive that the database to speed the writes. Is this a correct installation? Is there any information on a best practice installation? I have spent about 6 hours on MS and Google trying to find an answer. Thanks for any help you can give. then I format my laptop and install the windows again, and every thing works fine, but I installed the SQL again and i had same problem with windows startup, there is nothing related to SQL in ;msconfig utilities.
