Is Wrong Version Of SQL Server Active On Server
Dec 22, 2006
A couple of days ago I installed SQL Server Developer Edition onto my server "DELLNOV2006" which already had an instance of SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.
All seemed fine, but today trying to use SQL SMAS, I received the error "This version of SQL server is not supported. You must upgrade to an instance of SQL server 2005.
So I opened MSFT SQL Server Management Studio and in object explorer saw the highest object was "DELLNOV2006 (SQL Server 8.00.2039 DELLNOV2006MST).
In the query window SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition') is returning 8.00.2039
That's SQL Server 200 SP 4, so it looks like SL Server 2005 is either not installed or is somehow not the default.
According to 'Remove Software' window, I have both SQL Server 200 and 2005 installed.
How can I get SQL 2005 as the default? Then I can get rid of 2000.
Thanks
Mike Thomas

We installed an Enterprise version onto a server that only needs Standard. Unfortunately an outside supplier installed software and databases on it before we realised our mistake. Is it safe to just install Standard 'over the top'and what would that do to the application's databases ?

I am running MS SQL 2000.I recently ran a procedure in Query Analyzer from the Master db toclear out all replication information so I could start/recreate itagain. After I ran this procedure Enterprise Manager no longer showed theregistered server in the tree. When I tried to re-register it gave methe following message:"A connection could not be established to ([Database Name])""Reason: [SQL-DMO]Sql Server ([Database Name]) must be upgraded toversion 7.0 or later to be administered by this version of SQL-DMO""Please verify that sql is running and check your SQL serverregistration properties (by right click on the ([Database Name]) node)and try again."I I am developing a mobile application with Visual Studio 2005 RTM. I created a .SDF database from scratch within the Server Explorer window. Based on the properties of the database, this is a version 3.0 DB. I then deploy the application to the Pocket PC 2003 SE Emulator and I receive an error when trying to open the database from my app. It's a very generic error:
System.SData.SqlServerCE.SqlCEException
I trap the error in my code, but there is no message in the exception object.
If I try to open it with Query Analyzer on the device, I get an error stating "The file is not a valid database file". It appears that SQL CE 2.0 was deployed to the emulator.
I noticed that when I add a reference in my project to the System.Data.SQLServerCE namespace, it defaults to this DLL:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev2.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll
I tried removing that and manually adding a reference by browsing to this 3.0 DLL:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev3.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll
I then receive the following build error:
Unable to load referenced library 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDKSQL ServerMobilev3.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll': Version 2.0 is not a compatible version.
If I build the database in my application from scratch from within my code, everything works fine, which I believe is because it is a 2.0 database that is generated.
To make a long story short:
How do I get my project to reference the 3.0 SQL Server CE namespace and deploy it to the emulator?

I'm trying to rebuild from a meltdown. I'm using disk backup files. Icould have sworn that I had SQL Server 2000 SP3 installed on the oldmachine, but maybe not. With SP3 installed, I get a message along the lines that the restorecan't be done because the backup was created using server version134218262 and this server is version 134218488.I've searched the documentation and can't find any reference to thoseversion numbers. In any case, I thought SQL Server 2000 could restore backups createdon any SP level to any SP level.Any ideas?--Regards.Richard.

I have a table with the following columns employeeSessionID, OpDate, OpHour, sessionStartTime, sessionCloseTime. I need to see how many users remain active per hour. I can calculate how many logged in per hour, but I am stumped on how to count how many are active per hour. I have a single table that stores login data. I have created a query that pulls out the only the data needed from the table into a temp table using this query. Also note it is possible that the sessionCloseTime is null if the device has not been logged out this would need to be counted a active.
TABLE NAME #empSessionLog Contains the time stamp data OpDate, sessionStartTime and sessionCloseTime.

can see how many sessions logged in per hour with the following statement:
SELECT

Count(*) AS Total

Where I am stuck is how do I count the sessions that remain active per hour until the session is closed with the sessionCloseTime.

Hi
I am newbie in SQL Clustering. I have set up a Windows Server Cluster with 2 nodes and am having the following problem with Physical Disk resource for cluster groups:
My Default Cluster Group (named Cluster Group) has IP Address, Network Name, Physical Disk and MSDTC resources. In addition to that my Default SQL Server instance resources are also in this group. I had this initial set up for Active/Passive mode.
Now I am trying to set up a SQL Cluster in Active/Active mode. For this I have to install another instance of SQL Server in the existing cluster and make a separate cluster group for its resources. I made a new cluster group (SQL Instance Group) with an IP Address and a Network Name resource for this new instance but I dont have any Physical Disk resource to allocate to it. As such while installing the SQL Server Instance I get stuck when I'm asked to select the quorum disk to be used.
Is it possible to configure two quorum disks, one for each group?
What's the concept of dedicated disks resource for each sql instance in a group? Is this same as the quorum disk? If this is not a shared disk how do I configure a dedicated disk resource for my second cluster group (SQL Instance Group)?
Anyone could please help me out with this?

Hi,
We are trying to set up an active/active configuration of a SQL Server
cluster, and we had a few questions.
Initially, we want to have 2 Database Servers that would share the same
Database (both reading/writing to the same tables).
However, from reading the MS docs, we find out that we can have what
they call an "active/active" configuration using a Cluster but they
need to have 2 different disk sets, i.e. having 2 separate databases.
If this assumption is correct, how does the data get synchronised
between the 2 databases (that are on the 2 different disks sets)?
Can anyone help? thanks

ACTIVE/ACTIVE SQL Server 2000 Cluster
This was my plan.
Physical box - box1,box2
virtual box - virtual1
i have a active/passive cluster virtual1 (primary node box1, secondary box2)
I am creating another virtual box on box2 as primary node by name virtual2)
whenever my installation setup runs my default server name is greyed out. it always requires a instance name.
Is that the way it should work?
i can only use instance for active/active failover?
please advice

Hello folks,
have you ever heard of an Active/Active SQL Sever 2000 Cluster deployed in a pure OLTP environment?
Some 8 years ago I have learned about a bespoke solution for the SAP ERP system (not the BW!) with DB2 Parallel Server for a huge German company. Then again, I would expect that Oracle RAC might fit into an OLTP environment, although I never heard about a real world implementation.
All this led me to believe clustering is good for failover purposes, and for decision support services, not quite for OLTP applications.
So if you see a point in Active/Active Clustering and OLTP please come forward and explain.
Cheers,
Johann
P.S: For those of you who want to know: Consultants from www.hiltes.com want us to deploy an Active/Active Cluster for their Fashion 3000 Net stock software.

When I execute the query "Select @@VERSION as 'SQL Server Version'" from SQL
Server Management Studio Express, I get '2005 - 9.00......." returned as the
version. When I execute the same query from a VB 6 program, I get "Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)" returned.
What is odd is the VB 6 program had been returning '2005' within the last
two weeks. I have not uninstalled or re-installed 2005 in my environment.
I also executed the following at the command prompt and recieved SQL 2000:
"C:Documents and SettingsAdministrator>sqlcmd -S MARKB-LTXP -U SA -P
medw.1 -q "select @@version"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.760 (Intel X86)
Dec 17 2002 14:22:05
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Personal Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)"
When I execute 'exec master..xp_msver' as a query, 2005 is returned but when done from my VB 6 program I get 2000 returned...
Any ideas?

Is there any way to restore a database of higher version to lower version.
E.g. I have created a database in sql server 2012, created some tables & procedures in that.I took Full backup of that database. Can I restore it to sql 2008r2 or any lower version.
I know direct restore is not possible, I have to use either import or export option or generating script, but i want to know is there any easy step to do so.

Hi all,
Since some analysis services features are only available in Enterprise version , I have to upgrade my SQL 2005 server from standard edition to enterpise edition.
So I uninstall originial standard version of analysis service and install a Enterprise version. However, the analysis service is still a standard version after installation.
Is it possible to keep data engine as standard version and install a enterprise version of analysis service?
Thank you very much
Tony

Hello, Can anyone please explain how the failover processes works on a sql server 2000 2 node active/active cluster.
Given the following
You have 2 node active/active cluster NodeA & NodeB
Question
1. How many SQL instances need to be installed on each node?
2. If the answer to question #1 is one instance per node, then
say if NodeA fails NodeB will take over all the resources of NodeA
including the master database, How does that work , how can once instance (in nodeB) handle two master database i.e its own master database and the one taken over from NodeA.

Hello,I have been searching and reading a lots of information on the microsoft website about the different version of SQL server, but still can not make my decision. In term of performance, is there a real big difference between the workgroup and the standard version? The workgroup is limited to 3 GB of RAM while the standard is unlimited, would that really change the performance if my server has 16Gb or RAM?The price difference is pretty substantial so if could only have to buy the workgroup , it would be better. One more question, regarding the type of licence, my server has 2 processors, could I avoid buying 2 licences and get the Server plus CAL instead. I am using this server to host 4 web-application running on SQL server. Each database is about 15 MB.Thanks in adavance for your advises.Arno

I am wondering if it is possible to change from SQL Server Enterprise Evaluation Version to Developer Version. The reason is because the Enterprise Evaluation version expires after 180 days. So if I create reports and cubes in Enterprise Evaluation I can import them into Developer Edition right? Should I remove the Enterprise Evaluation version after 180 days or leave it then install Developer Edition?

We have a 64bit os machine that we accidently loaded the 32 bit version of sql server on. We now want to upgrade it to 64 bit sql server, but we now have a production database on it. My understanding is that all I have to do is detach the production database, upgrade to 64bit sql server, then reattach the database. Is this really all I have to do?

Can some one here give me more insight about how to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Standard Version (32 bits) to a SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Version (32 bits) as default instance on a Windows 2003 enterprise OS (32 bits). I want to know what is the easist way and what is the safest way. May I preserve some settings I have for the STD version, or I have to start from strach again to configure the server? Is there any catches, anything I should have attention to (We are using heavily about CLR and fulltext indexing)?
Thanks a milliom

Hi
I installed RS 2005, SP1 and then the rollup fix 2153 however; if I run http://server/reportserver or view the reportserver log file, it shows version 2047 which is the SP1 version. I have added the tail end of the rollup hotfix log file which shows I have installed it.
Is this a known issue?

Hello,
I installed the SQL Server 2k EnterPrise version and developer version on the same version, and the developer version is an instance "Development".
How do I expose both of them to internet? Just open both of them to port 1433? And on the client side, just say IP and IP/Development? Do I need specific set up, will they conflict?
Thanks,

I downloaded the 101 Samples installation (i.e. 101SamplesCS.msi) from Microsoft's website, which contains SQL Server database files.
While working with the databases in the "Data Access" samples from the 101 Samples projects, I get the following error:
"Database <mdf_name> cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (600) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database..."
I assume the database files were created with a beta or CTP version of SQL Server 2005. Does anyone know where I can get an updated version of these database files or scripts to update them?
Please help.
Mike.

I want two write a small script to determine which is the currently active (primary) server in the AG.
Right now, I see that using SELECT * FROM SYS.dm_hadr_availability_replica_states I can determine the role. However, when the server goes down and switches to the secondary node, I don't believe that the role changes (or does it?). How do I determine which is the active node?

Hello,
at the moment I have the following problem:
We have installed a version of the MSDE 2000 Sp3 with our software since 2005. Now we install SQL Server Express 2005 in order to use the latest version and to be compatible with Vista.
We have never had any problems with the MSDE, so it was no problem that we installed the german version (by mistake) because there never was any output at installation time.
When we now upgrade the existing MSDE installing the new version of our software, there are often problems and there are error messages, unfortunately in german, which cannot be read by most of our international users.
The problem is, that there seems to be no possibility to upgrade the existing (german) MSDE with the english version of SQL Server Express 2005.
My question is, if it is possible to upgrade the german MSDE to the english SQL Server 2005 to enable our international users to read the error messages at installation time in english?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Peter
