Is Adding Custom Expressions Possible In The Expression Builder?
Mar 22, 2008
I would like to add additional string functions and other types of functions to the expression builder in SQL Server Integration Services. Right now the list of functions is relatively limited to such things as FINDSTRING, RIGHT, LEN, etc.
Is this possible?

I typically use Report Designer, but I have a new project requiring Report Builder 3.0. In Report Designer (BIDS), I can take more complex expressions (ie SWITCH with 5 or 6 options), and put each pairing on a new line to be able to better read the code.
In the Expression Editor in Report Builder, pressing the ENTER key on my keyboard closes the Expression dialog box and saves the changes.
Is there any way to add line returns in the code to make it more readable? The expression editor wraps when it runs out of room, but this doesn't make it more readable, in some cases, it wraps in the middle of a field name, making it even less readable.
The 2012 version also has this same "feature".

Hi,
I have implemented a custom source component that can be used as the data source in the Data Flow task.
I have also created a custom UI for this component by using the IDtsComponentUI .
But my component does not have the capability of setting the custom properties via the DTS Variables using the Expression Builder.
I have looked around for samples on how to do this, but I can only find samples of how to do this for custom Control Tasks, i.e. IDtsTaskUI.
My question is, How can implement the Expression Builder in my custom Source component + custom Source UI. Or do you know of any samples which I can look at.
Thank you,
Jameel.

Hi,
I've created a Custom Data Flow Component and added some Custom Properties.
I want the user to set the contents using an expression. I did some research and come up with the folowing:
Code Snippet
IDTSCustomProperty90 SourceTableProperty = ComponentMetaData.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
SourceTableProperty.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
SourceTableProperty.Name = "SourceTable";
But it doesn't work, if I enter @[System:ackageName] in the field. It comes out "@[System:ackageName]" instead of the actual package name.
I'm also unable to find how I can tell the designer to show the Expression editor. I would like to see the elipses (...) next to my field.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Hi,
I'm trying to enable Expression for a custom property in my custom data flow component.
Here is the code I wrote to declare the custom property:
public override void ProvideComponentProperties()
{
ComponentMetaData.RuntimeConnectionCollection.RemoveAll();
RemoveAllInputsOutputsAndCustomProperties();
IDTSCustomProperty90 prop = ComponentMetaData.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
prop.Name = "MyProperty";
prop.Description = "My property description";
prop.Value = string.Empty;
prop.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
...
}
In design mode, I can assign an expression to my custom property, but it get evaluated in design mode and not in runtime
Here is my expression (a file name based on a date contained in a user variable):
"DB" + (DT_WSTR, 4)YEAR( @[User::varCurrentDate] ) + RIGHT( "0" + (DT_WSTR, 2)MONTH( @[User::varCurrentDate] ), 2 ) + "\" + (DT_WSTR, 4)YEAR( @[User::varCurrentDate] ) + RIGHT( "0" + (DT_WSTR, 2)MONTH( @[User::varCurrentDate] ), 2 ) + ".VER"
@[User::varCurrentDate] is a DateTime variable and is assign to 0 at design time
So the expression is evaluated as: "DB189912189912.VER".
My package contains 2 data flow.
At runtime,
The first one is responsible to set a valid date in @[User::varCurrentDate] variable. (the date is 2007-01-15)
The second one contains my custom data flow component with my custom property that was set to an expression at design time
When my component get executed, my custom property value is still "DB189912189912.VER" and I expected "DB200701200701.VER"
Any idea ?

Hello,
I have a question about using the query builder, or just straight sql, to create expressions. My first example caused the query builder to generate a query configuration error:
Expression: EIM_REQUISITION_DETAILS.EST_UNIT_COST * EIM_REQUISITION_DETAILS.REQRD_QTY AS COST
Syntax error: Expecting "," or "FROM" after column alias or "*"
Initially I thought I was dead in the water but then I decided to just run it anyway and it worked! I got my cost. OK so fine the query tool doesn't recognize some sql expressions. Because I am trying to make a large flat file I thought I'd concatenate 2 fields to generate a recognizable requisition, which everyone knows is the year followed by a hyphen then the req number:
My old Access query had this: Req: Right([REQ_YR],2) & "-" & [REQ_NO]
and I tried to change it to this: substring (EIM_REQUISITIONS.REQ_YR from 2 for 2) || '-' || EIM_REQUISITIONS.REQ_NO AS REQ
So apparently my older sql book doesn't have the syntax right. Since I plan to do more of this could someone point me to a reliable book or site that could help me with sql syntax?
Thanks,
Dana

I am writing a custom task that has some custom properties. I would like to parameterize these properties i.e. read from a varaible, so I can change these variables from a config file during runtime.
I read the documentation and it says if we set the ExpressionType to CPET_NOTIFY, it should work, but it does not seem to work. Not sure if I am missing anything. Can someone please help me?
This is what I did in the custom task
customProperty.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
In the Editor of my custom task, under custom properties section, I expected a button with 3 dots, to click & pop-up so we can specify the expression or at least so it evaluates the variables if we give @[User::VaraibleName]
Any help on this will be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
I'm creating a custom data flow transformation in c#.
I would like to use expressions within this component in the same way as in the derived column component: specifying the expression as a custom property of an output column, then evaluating this expression for each row of the buffer and using this evaluated expression to populate my output column values.
So I've added an custom expression on my output column, and set its expression type to CPET_NOTIFY
IDTSCustomProperty90 exp = col.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
exp.Name = "Expression";
exp.ExpressionType = DTSCustomPropertyExpressionType.CPET_NOTIFY;
But in the ProcessInput method I don't manage to get the evaluated expressions, when I use exp.Value I get my expression definition and not its evaluation.
Is there a way to get these evaluated expressions ?
Thanks,
Stéphane

am trying to do the following in SSIS.
I have Execute Process Task, in which I have the values are set for Executable, Arguments and working Directory manually. I keep changing this if the Connection Manager points to Dev or when it points to QA or to Prod. Instead I want to do like this.
If my Connection Manager points to Dev, the Executale , Arguments and Working Directory should automatically change. Else if it points to QA, the Executale , Arguments and Working Directory should automatically change and similarly for Prod.
Is this possible in Expression Builder in Execute Process Task. If so, how?.
Thank you

I ran in to a strange problem in Report Builder. I drop a few fields from my Report Model on a simple talbe report. Some of them are straight forwards attributes and some of them are expressions.
Now in the table layout of a report I have say a attribute named as "Account Number". This attribute is actually a field from a table. I change the column header to a two line column header with €œAccount€? on one line and €œNumber€? on second line. No problem, piece of cake.
Now tried the same thing on an expression type attribute, say "Principal Balance". When I split the column header on two line I get this following error.
==============================================================
Semantic query compilation failed: e MeasureNotFound One of the SubtotalMeasures.MeasureName properties of the SemanticQuery refers to the Measure Expression 'Principal
Balance', which does not exist. (SemanticQuery '').
----------------------------
An error has occurred during report processing.
==============================================================
If you read the error you will realize that the query is trying to find an expression named "Principal" (newline char) "Balance" and it fails.
This expression is nothing but a sum aggregation on a field in the underlying table. If I put the "Principal Balance" back on one line report runs like a charm. Also note that exact same report in Designer no issues at all.
FYI: I am in SQL Server 2005 with SP2. (tried it both on Standard and Enterprise versions.)

Hi all of you,
When you're making expressions with your own variables and system variables and so on. How could I see the contents for each variable?
When you have an expression like this:
"Cargas de Hacienda. " + SUBSTRING( @[System:ackageName], 7,20) + " "
You can perfectly click above "Evaluated value" and see the resutl but I mean, individually over each variable on the variables listview is not possible.
Thanks for any input or advice,
Enric

I can't figure this one out. I don't have enough knowledge of the string functions I guess.
I need to pull a value out of a variable I setup in a for each loop. The value is the filename/path of each source file being processed. Let's say the variable that has the source file path is called VAR1.
One sort of off topic thing I've noticed is when watch the variable in bebug mode and I look at the value of VAR1 it has double back slashes. Here's an example of the value of VAR1:
"\\L3KRZR6.na.xerox.net\C$\Documents and Settings\ca051731\Desktop\Project4\DPT_20070926.ver"
How come the back slashes have been doubled? And do I need to account for that when I start parsing the string value?
Anyway, I need to grab part of the filename from VAR1 and I need the value populated at the start of the for each loop container - ideally when I capture VAR1 in the for each container. I'll be using the string in drop table, create table and create index statements before the actual Data Flow task within the overall package
In the above example I need to grab the characters before the underscore and after the last \. So I'd need the string "DPT" captured in this example.
The actual string could be 1 to 3 characters long, even though this example has it as 3 long.
Underscores could exist anywhere in the actual UNC path once this package is moved to our actual system environments so I can't key off of the underscore.
Because I can't count on the string being a fixed lenght I can't just use a positional string function and grab specific text starting/ending at specific points.
Is there a way to use the various string functions in the expression builder to grab the text between the right most underscore and the right most back slashes or something like that? Ideally I'd like to setup a new expression based packed scope variable called VAR2 and build it using string functions applied to VAR1.

Hello,
I am attempting to create an expression for a package variable in a SQL Server Integration Services project, but the elipse button in the expression property for the variable does not appear (Visual Studio 2005). I've tried two different screen resolutions, no luck.
Why would the elipse not be there? Is there a keystroke I can use to open the exrpression builder?
Thank you for your help!

This works:
len ((DT_WSTR,2)DATEPART("mm", getdate()))==1 ? (DT_WSTR,1)0 + (DT_WSTR,1)DATEPART("mm", getdate()) : (DT_WSTR,4)DATEPART("mm", getdate())
This doesn't:
"dataware/"+ len ((DT_WSTR,2)DATEPART("mm", getdate()))==1 ? (DT_WSTR,1)0 + (DT_WSTR,1)DATEPART("mm", getdate()) : (DT_WSTR,4)DATEPART("mm", getdate())
I tried a couple of different things at this point, where am I missing the cast? Before len? Cast to what?

I have a co-worker who applied build 3161 to SQL Server 2005. The original problem was that the print preview was showing up as black.This is a documented issue with Microsoft here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935436
Now, when she goes into expression builder, the foreground AND background color for what you type in there appears to be white... so everything shows up as invisible. You can highlight the text you type and it shows up but otherwise it is obviously invisible.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Has anyone encountered this before?
My colleague opens up an SSIS package with variables, many of which use expressions built with the Expression Builder. She cannot bring up the Expression Builder by clicking the ellipsis (...) in the "Expression" Property of the Property Window, regardless of whether "EvaluateAsExpression" is set to True or False.
I can open up this same package and use the Expression Builder just fine. Any ideas?
Apologies if this has been answered already, I did many searches to try to find the solution before posting here.
Thanks much!

Hi all,
I am stuck in the following situation, I have following query:
SELECT EM1.VALUE AS 'P_ABC', EM2.VALUE AS 'P_XYZ', COUNT(EM1.VALUE) AS 'COUNTS'
FROM TABLE_1 EM1, TABLE_1 EM2
WHERE EM1.EXTENDED_PROPERTY_GID IN (SELECT GID FROM TABLE_3 WHERE NAME = 'ABC' )
AND EM2.EXTENDED_PROPERTY_GID IN (SELECT GID FROM TABLE_3 WHERE NAME = 'XYZ' )
AND EM1.DOCUMENT_METADATA_ENTRY_GID = EM2.DOCUMENT_METADATA_ENTRY_GID
group by EM1.VALUE,EM2.VALUE
There is foreign key relation between EXTENDED_PROPERTY_GID OF TABLE_1 AND GID FROM TABLE_3
Now, I want to create an ad hoc report but the problem is when I add EM1.VALUE to display the P_ABC, I am not able to add EM2.VALUE after that, may be because refere to same column of same table. I have to add EM1.VALUE and EM2.VALUE both to display result but I am not able to do it.
What is the solution for this problem ? Its kind of urgent.
Thanks,
prashant

Hi
i have a database with several tables and i want to create a Insert query. and i do this by adding the tables to a dataset and create the relations between them and now i click on the table i want to create a query for and select Add Query. and then the TableAdapter Query configuration Wizard pops-up. but the problem is that in the query builder i can add ONLY ONE table, why? i need to add more than one table in order to make my query.
This is how this problem accured: At first i had to two databases, the first database i created myself and there i had all my tables and the second database was the one that contained all the membership info(this database is the one that visual studio creates automaticly for you when u are using the membership thing ASPNETDB.MDF). so i decided to only have one database and i re-created all my tables in the aspnetdb.mfd database, that is where this problem accured, that i can add only one table in the query builder.
appreciate any help :) tnx

Is there a way to evaluate an expression (like the derived column component) in a custom component? If so where should I look first? Is there an example?
An extremely simple sample is to put in an expression and evaluate one column and then add that to another column to create a new column. i.e. newcolumn = column1 + column2.
I realize that the derived column allows me to do this but I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to do this in a custom component without having to build my own expression evaluator.
Thanks!

Hi,
I have a report that needs sorting on a column that is calculated. however, the calculation is so complex (iterative calculations) i've had to do that within my custom code. I am getting the results back well and good but i cannot perform a sort based on that.
My problem is: how do i write a custom sort expression function that will direct the column to sort my table based on say the value(s) returned from that function. I want for example:
Code Snippet
Public Function mySortExpression(byVal myIDorWhatever as Something) as CustomSortableExpression
' Perform some calculation
' Return some value(s)/array or anything that the column can appreciate and sort the table accordingly with
End Function
then in say the Interactive Sort Sort Expression, i'll have the code:
Code Snippet
=code.MyClass.mySortExpression(myID)
I hope i've made myself clear enough.
Cheers

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone's accomplished this before - I've been unable to find a whiff of info on how to do this so far.
I'm creating a custom component that I'd like to give a "Derived Column" type of ability to. By that, I mean I'd like to populate a property of my component with an expression (including references to input columns, package variables and functions) and be able to evaluate it at runtime - per row processed by the component.
I would also appreciate any information as to how to provide the interface to allow the user to build such an expression as well - is there a UI function in SSIS I can call to pop up the "expression builder"?
Thanks!

All,
I am trying to achieve something as above. Basically, the Months subtotals are represented by A and B. Then (X-A) and (X-A-B) are also the subtotals at the same group level as A and B but don't simply display the total for respective years 2007 and 2008, instead those are remaning totals from X. In order to calculate the remaining totals however, one need to consider the subtotal in previous group. For example, for 2007 its X-A, but for 2008 its X-A-B. I would like to know if this can be achieved using Matrix control. If so, what would be the steps?
Thanks.
