Is It Possible To Execute A Container Regardless Of The Checkpoint File?
Feb 23, 2006
I have a situation where I need to make sure a task executes regardless of whether the package starts from a checkpoint or not. Is this possible?
Here's the scenario:
I have a package with 3 tasks {TaskA, TaskB, TaskC} that execute serially using OnSuccess precedence constraints.
The package is setup to use checkpoints so that if a task fails the package will restart from that failed task
TaskA is insignificant here.
TaskB fetches some data and puts it in a raw file
TaskC inserts that raw file data into a table.
Problem is that the insertion violates an integrity constraint in the database - so it fails. The problem is easily fixed but it needs to be fixed in TaskB because that is where the data is sourced.
So, I need to be able to execute TaskB again, even though it was TaskC that failed. Currently the package restarts from TaskC which reuses the raw file (which has the bad data in it) so the package continues to fail even though the cause of the problem has been fixed.
How do I configure the package in order to execute TaskB again? Is it even possible?

I have the following scenario:
-I have a package that uses checkpoints
-The first task in that package (an Exec SQL Task) retrieves a timestamp value from an external source
-That timestamp value is used in data-flows to pull data that has been changed since then
-At the end of the package the value in the db is updated
Now...if something fails then on the next execution the checkpoint file will kick in. But this means that the first task (which retrieves the timestamp) will not execute and therefore all the data-flows will be pulling the wrong data.
The only way I can think of getting around this problem is to specify that a task should execute regardless of the presence of a checkpoint file. Unfortunately it seems this cannot be done.
Another option might be to put an OnPreExecute task on the package that gets the timestamp value.
Anyone got any advice about how I should progress? Short of a suggestion from elsewhere I'm going to go with the tactic of using the OnPreExecute to retrieve the timestamp.
Thanks in advance.

Hi ALL,
Getting Access Denied To FileName Error When Using the Execute Sql Task (With File Connection) into a Foreach Loop Container.
Please Note :
I have a folder containing .sql files. I have to dynamically loop through the files and send them as a File connection Folder to the Execute Sql Task.
When I run this Package I am getting the follwoing error :
[Execute SQL Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Access to the path 'C:ProjectsFuzzy Lookup DataFlow ExampleScripts' is denied.".
Also I have logged in to the machine as Administrator and to Sql Server with sa.
Please help.
Thanks.

Hi. I am running a package using 'execute package' inside a for each loop file iteration. I have to iterate through some 10,000s of files to ETL source data, a resonably complex package. I want to set going and get some sleep but every 200 files or so I get a memory exhausted error and the task fails. Is there a short easy fix to refresh memory each iteration. If so please let me know. Just ignoring the failure at task level won't refresh the memory, will it?
Thanks for the help.

I have an Execute SQL Task that reads columns as strings but can be null. I feed the information in the result set to a foreach loop container and when nulls are encountered the package dies there. Is there an easy way to deal with this other. I have changed all of my null possible columns to object types but I don't want to do this for all of the possible null columns.
Thanks

I have a package with settings SaveCheckpoints=True and CheckpointUsage = Never. After the package failed I fixed the cause of failure by setting a database column to allow nulls. Then I went to our web app that we built to monitor package execution and clicked on the button to restart the package. The web app loads the package and then sets the CheckpointUsage property of the package object to 'Always'. Then it executes the package in a new thread. The package then produced this error:
Checkpoint file "E:Package1Checkpoint" failed to open due to error 0x80070005 "Access is denied.".
Since there was only one remaining task to run in the package I ran it manually.
Now here is the really interesting part. I then needed to run the same package but with different parameters. When I attempted to run it with the saved checkpoint settings (CheckpointUsage=Never, SaveCheckpoints=True) I got this error:
"An existing checkpoint file is found with contents that do not appear to be for this package, so the file cannot be overwritten to start saving new checkpoints. Remove the existing checkpoint file and try again. This error occurs when a checkpoint file exists, the package is set to not use a checkpoint file, but to save checkpoints. The existing checkpoint file will not be overwritten. "
So I then attempted to rename the checkpoint file so it would not interfere, however, it would not let me, saying that the file was in use.
So what I had to do was add a configuration entry which set SaveCheckpoints to False. Then I was able to run the package.
Any ideas?

I have an SSIS solution with 8 packages in it. I have checkpoint turned on with the 'If Exists' option. Each of the 8 packages have 8 separate checkpoint files specified.
One out of two runs will fail with one of the below errors:
The checkpoint file \xxxxxxxx is locked by another process. This may occur if another instance of this package is currently executing.
Checkpoint file \xxxxxxxx failed to open due to error 0x80070020 "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another proces
I have checked all the settings and everything looks fine, looks like the problem is when you have many Control Flow tasks in a package and if two of them are completed at the same time and they try to write to this file one of them is unable to write and it fails.
This is causing the entire job to fail even though the control flow was successful.
Anyone encounter this issue? Any assistance is appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,
I have a problem where my packahe isn't restarting from the point of failure and I'm tryig to understand why not.
The following line came from the checkpoint file:
<DTS:Container DTS:ContID="{36A685E1-049A-4E6C-9884-AADF8BE29577}" DTS:Result="0" DTS:PrecedenceMap="" />
Can anyone explain:
What DTS:Result & DTS:PrecedenceMap are used for?
What values can DTS:Result contain and what do they mean? [Today I have only seen "0".]
What values can DTS:PrecedenceMap contain and what do they mean? [Today I have only seen "Y" & "".]
Thanks

Here's the set up:
ForEach Loop Container:
Collection: Foreach File Enumerator
Variable Mappings: Variable = User::DailyFile, Index = 0
Execute SQL Taks:
Connection: OLEDB
ResultSet: None
SQLStatement: EXEC spGetFile ?
ParameterMapping: VariableName = USER::DailyFile, Direction = Input, DataType=VARCHAR, Parameter = 0
This works great it iterates through a file and looks at all the files checks to see if they have been loaded into the db table, if not it loads the file.
My spGetFile has RETURN 1 if a file is loaded and RETURN 0 if the file is not loaded.
Now I add a new variable:
Step 1: add to Foreach Loop Container
ForEach Loop Container Name = Return, Scope = ForEachLoop, Data Type= Int32 Value=0
Step 2: Add to Execute SQL Task:
VariableName = User:Return, Direction = ReturnValue, DataType = Long, ParameterName =1
This produces the following error:
~~"Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.~~
I tried with an ADO.Net connection ... works until I add the ReturnValue parameter ...
Any ideas??
Thanks

hi folks,
i have this error when trying to run the package in development mode.
and i can not decipher this non-intuitive message:
Error: 0xC001604D at <package name>: Checkpoint file "" failed during creation due to error 0x80070003 "The system cannot find the path specified.".
please note that i have no checkpoints on package anymore; i had two but i deleted them but this message still appears.
i have searched the web but no luck in finding an answer.
maybe someone would be able to point out my obvious mistake here.

I've created an SSIS package that contains a Sequence Container with TransactionOption = Required. Within the container, there are a number of Execute Package Task components running in a serial fashion which are responsible for performing "Upserts" to dimension and fact tables on our production server. The destination db configuration is loaded into each of these packages using an XML configuration file. The structure of these "Upsert" packages are nearly identical, while some execute correctly and others fail. Those that fail all provide the same error messages.
These messages appear during Pre-Execute
[Insert new dimension record [1627]] Error: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "DW" failed with error code 0xC0202009.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: component "Insert new dimension record" (1627) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC020801C.
... which are followed by
[Connection manager "DW"] Error: The SSIS Runtime has failed to enlist the OLE DB connection in a distributed transaction with error 0x8004D00A "Unable to enlist in the transaction.".
[Connection manager "DW"] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8004D00A.
While still in debug mode, I can check the properties of the "DW" connection and successfully test the connection within the packages that fail.
The same packages run successfully when tested outside the container (i.e. no transaction) or when the configuration file is modified to point the "DW" connection to a development version of the db which is running on the same server as the source database.
I have successfully used DTCtester to verify that transactions from source to destination server are working correctly. Also tried setting DelayValidation = True with no change. I have opened a case with Microsoft and am awaiting a reply so I thought I'd throw a post out here to see if anyone else has encountered this and might have a resolution. Here's some more on the environment:
Source Server:
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1
SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP0
Destination Server:
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP3 (clustered)
Thank you in advance for any feedback you might be able to provide.

SSIS Newbie Question:
I have a simple Control Flow setup that checks to see if a particular table exists. If the table does not exists, the table is created in an alternate path, if it does exist, the table is truncated before moving to a file import Data Flow that uses an OLE DB Destination to output the imported data.
My problem is, that I get OLE DB package errors if the table the OLE DB Destination Container references does not exist when I load the package.
How can I over come this issue? I need to be able to dynamically create the table in an earlier step, then use that table to import data into in a later step in the workflow.
Is there a switch I can use to turn off checking in the OLE DB Destination Container so that it will allow me to hook up the table creation step?
Seems like this would be a common task...
Steps:
1. Execute SQL Task to see if the required table exists
2. Use expresions to test a variable to check the results of step 1
3. If table exists, truncate the table and reload it from file in Data Flow using OLE DB Destination
4. If table does not exist, 1st create it, then follow the normal Data Flow
Can someone help me with this?
Signed: Clueless with a deadline approaching...

I can set the propperty of the checkpoint file to a local drive, but not to a UNC path mapping, mapping to my host server. (loop back)
Example: "I:FILEFILE1$InputArchiveOntwikkel " is possible as checkpoint file property.
S11487O$InputArchiveOntwikkel is not possible, though this is the same folder on the local host.
For data source both unc path and drive mapping are allowed. Why this difference?

I am trying to move files from one directory to anonther using the For Each Loop Container and a File System Task. However, on the FIRST iteration of the ForEach Loop the variable that I am setting to the 0 index of the For Each Loop is returning me a valid directory with no file ( path only ) from who knows where ????
On the second iteration of the For Each Loop everything works as expected and I get the full path and file name and it iterates through all the files in the directory o.k.
So I have had to put a Hack to skip the fist iteration of the loop and then execute the File Task on the second iteration but I dont see anyone else doing this.
Where in the heck is it getting this odd directory from on the fist iteration ( its not my User varible because I am initializing it to \nowhereofile ). What am I doing wrong?

Hello,
I want to set up a Foreach loop container to loop through several flat files. I have a connection manager set up for individual flat files. The metadata for the files is all the same. They are fixed width files, and contain sixty five columns.
I didn't see a place in the container properties to configure the metadata of the files. How can a Foreach Loop Container 'know' the metadata of the flat files that I want to loop through?
Thank you for your help!

Hi,
Is it possible to use multiple masks in a For Each File Loop container?
I need to process "*.txt" and "*.csv" and tried to separate them with all the usual characters("," ";" etc.) but it does not seem to work. I don't want to create 2 or more containers for each mask.
Thanks

I am trying to write a SSIS to distribute files to our client directories. In my source directory ( C:ClientPending ) i have a variable amount of file with variable file names and extensions. I need to sort these and place then in to different cient direcories. Each file name will contain the clients Referance Number ( ie Q123456.007 , A123456.exe, S123456.523 etc ). this clients directory would be C:ClientOutbound123456
Im presuming that i need a for loop container and a system file task, and a variable that i can parm in the ClientRef, i just dont know how to configure it.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

My package is having .csv file as a source and I kept OLEDB destination to load it.
Stored the .csv file in a shared folder and the exact path is given in Enumerator configuration of the foreach loop container. When I execute my package, it is giving the warning as below:
It is saying that file is not there in the specified path and directory is empty. I am running the SSIS package from TFS. I am sure that I have read and write access for the shared folder for my userID. Is there any access there to pick up this file from path.

I was wondering if anyone out there has any code to automate the execution of a SQL Job? The purpose of this is to run the vbs file locally (on local machine), connect to SQL server and run the SQL Job. I would appreciate this help. While I can run DTS packages, I am unable to "find" the SQL object to run the SQL Job. Again thanks.

Hi,
I am calling xp_cmdshell from inside a stored procedure to generate reports dynamically.
EXEC master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'rs.exe -i "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90SamplesReporting ServicesScript SamplesSample1.rss" -s http://localhost/reportserver -v param1="10" -l 0 -e mgmt2000 -t -b'
In the .rss file, i use the following :
Dim parameters(1) As ParameterValue
parameters(0) = New ParameterValue()
parameters(0).Name = "s_no"
parameters(0).Value = param1
My question is how do I pass dynamic values in param1. I have a variable in my stored proc called @s_no which i try to pass like this, however it is not working.
EXEC master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'rs.exe -i "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90SamplesReporting ServicesScript SamplesSample1.rss" -s http://localhost/reportserver -v param1=@s_no -l 0 -e mgmt2000 -t -b'
Can anyone suggest how to do this? Over here, I want to pass the value of param1 dynamically.
Thanks.

Hi,
I would like to ask someone who could help me with one small problem:
I would like to run SQL server task on one of my servers, that will connect
to all other servers (including ones that are not SQL servers, ie: Exchange,
Test Server etc) one at the time, and that will execute one batch file (update.bat) that is residing on each server under C: drive.
Batch file will copy some things from all of the servers to one server.
