Is It Possible To Get The Column Name For Insert Conversion Error?

Aug 27, 2007

insert into Table1 (intColumn1, intColumn2, intColumn3, .....)
select c1, c2, c3, .....
from anotherTable

The exception error won't tell you which column got the error if there is a conversion exception.

Bulk Insert Data Conversion Error (truncation)

Dec 4, 2006

hi

"Bulk insert data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 1 (id)."

when you get the error above or similar in sql server 2000 does it continue inserting the data by truncating it or does it stop beacause looking at the data that i have got it seems to continue inserting the data but just truncates the colunm. i have tried it several time its seeems to be consistent.

I have data that has white spaces after the actual data e.g. '00093 ' hence i am happy aslong as i can be sure that it does always continue as i will be loading alot of data using a similar process.

hence my question is that will it load all the data all the time and just truncate it to fit the column size?

BULK INSERT ERROR Using Format File - Bulk Load Data Conversion Error

Jun 29, 2015

I'm trying to use Bulk insert for the first time and getting the following error. I think it might have something to do with my Format File and from the error msg there's a conversion error for the first column. In my database the Field is nvarchar(6) so my best guess is to use SQLNChar for the first column. I've checked the end of each line is CR LF therefore the is correct for line 7 right?

Sql Insert Conversion Failed When Converting From A Character String To Uniqueidentifier. Error With Parameters

Dec 28, 2007

Hi,I'm new at asp .net and am having a problem. On a linkbutton click event, I want to insert into my db a row of data which includes two parameters. Param1 is the id of the logged in user, and Param2 is  <%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, 'UserId')%> which is the username of a user given through a datalist. When I execute the query:   "insert into aspnet_friendship (userId, buddyId) values (@Param1, @Param2)"I get the error: Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.I am trying to insert these into my table aspnet_friendship into the columns userId and buddyId which are both uniqueidentifier fields. I tested the query using the same values  (@Param1, @Param1) and (@Param2, @Param2) and found out that the problem is with Param2 because when I use Param1 the insert works perfectly. The value passed by Param2 is supposed to be the id of a user which I get from the datalist which selects * from aspnet_Users, so that <%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, 'UserId')%> should also be an Id like Param1 is. Since both params are in the form of .toString(), I don't understand why one works but the other doesn't.As you can see in the code below, both of these parameters are dimmed as strings, so I don't understand why Param2 doesn't work. Can anyone please help?  Protected Sub LinkButton1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)                Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection        MyConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True")        Dim MyCommand2 As SqlCommand                Dim CurrentUser As String        CurrentUser = Membership.GetUser.ProviderUserKey.ToString()        Dim add As String        add = "<%#DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, 'UserId')%>".ToString()        Session("username") = User.Identity.Name                Dim InsertCmd As String = "insert into aspnet_friendship (userId, buddyId) values (@Param1, @Param2)"                MyCommand2 = New SqlCommand(InsertCmd, MyConnection)                MyCommand2.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Param1", CurrentUser)        MyCommand2.Parameters.AddWithValue("@Param2", add)               MyCommand2.Connection.Open()        MyCommand2.ExecuteNonQuery()        MyCommand2.Connection.Close()    End Sub Thank you.

Csv File Import: Bulk Insert Data Conversion Error (type Mismatch)

Sep 27, 2004

Hi,

Iam trying to import data from a csv file into my table in SQL Server 2000. My table is called as temp_table and consists of 3 fields.

column datatype
-------- -----------
program nvarchar(20)
description nvarchar(50)
pId int

pId has been set to primary key with auto_increment.

My csv file has 2 columns of data and it looks like follows:

program, description
"prog1", "this is program1"
"prog2", "this is program2"
"prog3", "this is program3"

Now i use BULK INSERT like this

"BULK INSERT ord_programs FROM 'C:datafile.csv' WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR=',', ROWTERMINATOR='', FIRSTROW=2)"

to import data into my table in SQL server and it gives me this error

"Bulk insert data conversion error (type mismatch) for row 2, column 3 (pId)"

I guess i have to use fileformat or something since i dont have anything for pId field in the csv file to make it work...

Please help me out guys and please post a snippet of code if you have.

Thank You.

Character To Numeric Conversion Error- Select Statment On Char Column

Sep 18, 2007

Hi guys/ladies I'm still having some trouble formatting a select statement correctly.
I am using a sqldatasource control on an aspx page. It is connecting via odbc string to an Informix database.
Here is my select statement cut down to the most basic elements.
SELECT     commentFROM         informix.ipr_stucomWHERE     (comment > 70)
The column "comment" contains student grades ranging from 0-100 and the letters I, EE, P, F, etc. Therefore the column is of a char type. This is a problem because I cannot run the above statement without hitting an alpha record and getting the following error
"Character to numeric conversion error"
How can I write this statement where it will work in the datasource control and have it only look at numeric values and skip the alpha values?
I have tried case with cast and isnumeric... I don't think that I have the formating correct.
I have also used:
WHERE (NOT (comment = '  I' OR comment = ' EE' OR comment = ' NG' OR comment = ' WP' OR comment = ' WF' OR comment = '  P' OR comment = '  F'))
This works but is very clunky and could possibly break if other letters are input in the future. There has to be a better way.I am sorry for my ignorance and thanks again for your help.

Bulk Insert Task Failing On Data Type Conversion For A Destination Column Of Type Bit

Jul 6, 2006

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.

I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.

I hope someone can help me work through this.

Thanks in advance,

Bulk Insert - Bulk Load Data Conversion Error

Jan 17, 2008

Im having some issues with bulk insert.

This is the table:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tmp_GA_status](

[GA_recno] [int] NOT NULL,

[GA_desc] [varchar](40) NULL

)

This is the file (unicode):
1|"test1"
2|"test2"
3|"test3"
4|"test4"
5|"test5"
6|"test6"
7|"test7"
8|"test8"

and this is the sql:

bulk insert tmp_GA_status from 'C: empTextDumpGA_status.dta'

with (CODEPAGE='RAW', FIELDTERMINATOR='|', ROWTERMINATOR='
', DATAFILETYPE='widechar')

so yeah, pretty simple. But whatever I do I get this;

'Cannot Insert Duplicate Key' Error With Identity Column As PK

Feb 18, 2008

I guess there is first for everything...I had never seen error like this before

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_table1'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'table1'. The statement has been terminated.

In this case Primary Key is Identity column. I do not include Idenity column in Insert statement.

Incidently SQL server machines had cluster failure couple of days before. I am not sure whether it has anything to do with it.

I see this error randomly.

How should I debug it

Sql 2005 Bogus Error?!?!?! 'Column Does Not Allow Insert Of NULLS'...(Duh!)

Oct 31, 2007

I have been battling this for 2 days! I could write a book on what does not work. I have even tried entering the data manually through the 'Open Table' SSMS function from the Object Explorer. I only have 5 records in the table. The first 4 I added a week or so ago during dev from the ASP.Net 2.0 (w VB) website that is the front end for this DB. I use a DAL between the site and DB.I added two new fields the other day and everything seemed to work fine. Now I get 'Siteid CANNOT BE NULL'. I abandoned attempts to Insert from the Website. The following was done directly through SSMS.I switched all of the columns (except PK) to allow nulls. I could add/update a record, no problem, even with directly typed data in some fields. I could also add one with only one field populated (some have defaults, some do not). Here is the table code:USE [bro122]GO/****** Object: Table [dbo].[tbsaDrem] Script Date: 10/31/2007 18:46:34 ******/SET ANSI_NULLS ONGOSET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ONGOSET ANSI_PADDING ONGOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[tbsaDrem]([DremID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,[CustID] [int] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_CustID] DEFAULT ((0)),[RealityYN] [bit] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_ContractYN] DEFAULT ((0)),[DreamName] [varchar](30) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_DreamName] DEFAULT ('New (Modify Name)'),[SiteID] [int] NOT NULL,[SitePremPric] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_SiteBasePric] DEFAULT ((0)),[NbhdBasePric] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_NbhdBasePric] DEFAULT ((0)),[PlanCtlgID] [int] NOT NULL,[PlanPric] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_PlanPric] DEFAULT ((0)),[SpecTotl] [money] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_SpecTotl] DEFAULT ((0)),[DremTotl] AS ((([NbhdBasePric]+[SitePremPric])+[PlanPric])+[SpecTotl]) PERSISTED,[Modified] [datetime] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_Modified] DEFAULT (getdate()),[ModUser] [varchar](25) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaDrem_ModUser] DEFAULT ('None'),[Created] [datetime] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_tbsaScenario_CreatedDate] DEFAULT (getdate()),[ts] [timestamp] NOT NULL,CONSTRAINT [PK_tbsaDremID] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([DremID] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 60) ON [PRIMARY]) ON [PRIMARY]GOSET ANSI_PADDING OFFGOEXEC sys.sp_addextendedproperty @name=N'MS_Description', @value=N'This is flagged with a Trigger when a Dream becomes a Reality. Bulk Insert Problem, Fails With Column Too Long Error

May 6, 2008

Hello All,

I'm having a problem doing a bulk insert on a tab delimited text file into mssql 2005 using either bulk insert or bcp.
When using the following bulk insert command I get the "The column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 2" error.
I have tried

Code Snippet

BULK

FORMATFILE = 'format_file.txt',
FIELDTERMINATOR = ' ',
ROWTERMINATOR = 'n',
KEEPIDENTITY

The data file only has data for the first 10 columns of a table with over 100 columns.

First 10 table columns have the format of

Data Conversion Failed. The Data Conversion For Column Value Returned Status Value 4 And Status Text Text Was Truncated Or On

Jan 7, 2008

Hi Experts,

I am extracting data from SQL Server 2005 to flat file destination. I am using SQL Command to specify the data selection query. One of my query uses Replicate function to derive a column value. When I execute this package it fails with the error "Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "value" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page".

The reason for the problem is that, it is taking the InputColumnWidth of the flat file destination as 8000 and I specified the OutputColumnWidth as 4.

If I change the OutputColumnWidth to 8000, it is working without any error but resulting in the column width of 8000.

I tried using DerivedColumn Transformation's Type cast and DataConversion Transformation but still I am getting the same error in the respective Transformation components.

Can anyone suggest how to solve this issue.

Flat File Source Error Output Conversion Error With UNICODE Files

May 14, 2008

i have a weird situation here, i tried to load a unicode file with a flat file source component, one of file lines has data like any other line but also contains the character "ÿ" which i can't see or find it and replace it with empty string, the source component parses the line correctly but if there is a data type error in this line, the error output for that line gives me this character "ÿ" instead of the original line.

simply, the error output of flat file source component fail to get the original line when the line contains hidden "ÿ".

i hope you can help me with issue.

Replace A Column In Data Conversion?

Feb 29, 2008

Hi, I was wondering if it is posible as in derived columns to replace an input column with the output one in Data Conversion?
What I can see that when a data conversion is done, only we can do it in a new column and not in the same one we are using as input.
Do you know if this it is posible?}
Thanks for your help!

Date Conversion - Derived Column

Jul 30, 2007

I'm reading a .csv file that has a column such as 17June2007:00:00:00, how can I convert this column in my Derived Column routine so its inserted into my DateTime column in my database?

so far I've tried
DT_DateTimeStamp
DT_Date
DT_DBDate
DT_DbTime

and its kicking back errors on this column. What do I have to do to convert 17June2007:00:00:00 into a readable datetime for the database column?

Data Conversion And Derived Column Issue

Jul 31, 2007

Hi all of you,

I think that I've done a big mess on my work... I've got plain file which must be loaded into a sql table. Up to there no problem, I use Derived Column due to columns needed be transformed with NULL, RIGHT, LEN, and so on...

But in this last package I've done half of work using Data Conversion but I've got five columns which would need be transformed but I don't know how can I do such thing. I can't connect a Derived Column from Flat File Source task, of course, it's already data conversion...

Let me know if you need further details.

Previously I think, silly idea, that it could be unified or better, that Data Conversion task allows me make transformations...

Thanks a lot for your ideas and thoughs,

SQL Server 2012 :: Implicit Conversion Comparing INT Column To 0?

Sep 15, 2015

In a stored procedure, the following code is causing a huge read and CPU load when it really shouldn't. The @IDParameter below is coming in as a parameter to the proc.

Here's the snippet of code where the problem is coming in:

DECLARE @ID INT;
SET @ID = (SELECT ID From OtherTable WHERE FKID = @IDParameter);
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM LargeTable

WHERE MostlyZeroID = @ID AND MostlyZeroID > 0Most (90+%) of the MostlyZeroID rows are 0 (hence the name) but regardless of distribution this should evaluate with minimal work on SQL Server's part to 0. However, when this was run, it is using a ton of CPU and doing a ton of Reads as it seeks through the entire index. When I look at the execution plan, I see under the seek predicate a Scalar Operator(CONVERT_IMPLICIT(int,[@1],0)) which is what is destroying the performance.

I've confirmed that the MostlyZeroID column in the LargeTable is defined as an INT NOT NULL. I also tested the scenario outside the stored procedure without any variables as the following to make sure it wasn't some kind of strange parameter sniffing scenario:

SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM LargeTable
WHERE MostlyZeroID = 0 AND MostlyZeroID > 0

However, this query also did the implicit conversion. I then tried this out on a temp table populated with a similar number of records (100 million) with a similar distribution and I didn't get the implicit conversion (I got a constant scan as I would've expected) when I did this:

SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM #TestTable
WHERE MostlyZero = 0 AND MostlyZero > 0

I also tried the same on several other tables that are set up similarly (large amount of zeros in an INT column) and I always got a constant scan and didn't do an implicit conversion.

why the query engine is interpreting this 0 as something other than an INT and doing an implicit conversion when getting the count in the scenario above? What can be done to protect against it? In the above scenario, an IF @ID > 0 statement was placed before the code including the count since there was no reason to even run the code if the @ID was equal to zero.

SQL 2012 :: Ignored Column In SSIS Package Throws Conversion Errors?

Dec 12, 2013

I have a data flow task in which I have a ADO NET source and OLE DB Destination. I have in the ADO NET source a sql command which pulls all the columns in a table. My requirement is to ignore a particular column, say column99. I opened advanced editor and deleted the mapping between the external and output columns for column99. I had also set the Error and Truncation to "Ignore Failure" for column99. I had also mapped the destination column to <Ignore> in OLD DB destination.

But this still throws the error-

Description: The ADO NET Source was unable to process the data. Field table-column99 missing an escape character for a quote.Unable to update PK WHERE clause.Error processing data batch.

How do I solve this?

SQL Server 2012 :: Format Value Of A Column And Insert It Into Another Column Of The Same Table?

Sep 18, 2014

A column of a table has values in the format - 35106;#Grandbouche-Cropp, Amy.

I need to format the column data in such a way that only the text after # (Grandbouche-Cropp, Amy) remain in the column.

The text before ;# (35106) should be inserted in to another column of the same table.

Below is the table structure:

create table [HR_DEV_DM].[CFQ_TEST].sp_CFQ_Commercial_Referrals
(
ID int identity,
PromotionalCode nvarchar(4000),
QuoteNumber nvarchar(100),
CreatedBy nvarchar(100),
Created datetime,
ModifiedBy nvarchar(100),
Modified datetime,
CreatedBy_SalesRepSharePointID int,

Insert Data Into A Destination Column Which Doesnt Have An Input Column

Feb 27, 2008

Hi, I was wondering how I can complete a column (which doesnt have an input one) with data.
For example:

I have a sql query which bring data of 3 columns

ID | FISRT NAME | LAST NAME
1 MIKE MORGAN
2 SARA JOHANES

So, I will insert that data in a FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, which I configured with 3 columns and I did the corresponding mapping in the FLAT FILE DESTINTATION.

Now, If I add one more column in the FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, I will not have it mapped to a input one, obviously. So, what I need is to add one more column to the flat file destination and complete it with zeros values in it.

Probably I can solve this part by introducing a DERIVED COLUMN and there I can configure the zeros that I want to add to the column. But I'm not sure if I can do that without having a input column.
So, the question will be, how can I add one column to a flat file which doesnt have a input and introduce any value that I want to it?
Hope I was clear
Thanks for your help.
