Is There A FREE, Pure Web Based Backup Restore Tool ?
May 10, 2008
HI
I am trying to find a pure web based backup restore tool that can be used on MS SQL 2000.
I have found a few that claim to be web based, but then it tells you to log into your MS SQL server and make some adjustments.
I know that microsoft Enterprise manager comes with a backup / restore tool. but 1) i dont want to have to install a complete copy of 2005 server, and 2) i dont hav ethe physical space to do it right now anyway. all i need to do is move 2 databases from one account to another.
thanks

SQL Stripes is an application that helps you, the SQL Server DBA, having complete control over your various SQL servers.
From the high-level of monitoring essential components - to the low-level of analyzing your various databases, tables etc…
This is *not* another Query-Analyzer like tool, nor does it intend to be. The idea is that each one of your servers gets a 'Stripe' which contains valuable real-time data on the selected server.
SQL Stripes is an intuitive and easy to use application, which is intended to make your DBA life a bit easier.
SQL Stripes is completely free. Please send your feedback/questions/suggestions
Thanks and enjoy!

I have a Linux machine here at work that I do some development on, along with a few other tasks. It's also on my primary machine at home. Is anyone aware of a SQL Server Management suite that will run (natively - not in a VM) on Linux? I've used Aqua Data Studio in the past, but I would rather not have to pay for another License just for a part-time use.I'm not looking for a full suite of graphical utilities. If I could get the basic functionality of Query Analyzer (query window, object scripting, etc..), I'll be happy.I've googled around, and the pickings have been rather slim. The only thing I've found is something called Transact-SQL Analyzer (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlanalyzer/). I haven't tried it yet, but I'll give it a shot. Has anyone used it before? It doesn't make mention of 2k5 support, either.

I was looking for a 'free' intellisense tool that will prompt me with options when I am writing stored procedures in SQL Server Studio. Very much like the intellisense in Visual Studio.
Does someone know about such a tool? I know there are tools of this type but they cost 600 to 1000 dollars for a single user.

Currently we use a SQL maintenance plan to do a full backup of all our databases daily (about 40 databases on our production server). As you can imagine, this eats up disk space quickly so currently we manually zip the backup files and/or move them to an archive drive. I considered writing an application to walk through the backup folder structure and zip any .bak file it finds, but I know there are some third party tools out there that will backup/restore a MS SQL database.
I was wondering if any of these also zip the backups once they are created. Any recommendations or suggestions are welcome.

SQL 7.0 SP1.
We do SQL Server backup and also third part backup (with SQL agent active) of SQL Server databases.
Sometimes happen this situation:
01.00 SQL Server backup of DB1
01.00 third part backup of DB1
02.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
03.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
03.30 SQL Server differnatial DB backup of DB1
04.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
or this situation:
01.00 SQL Server backup of DB1
02.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
03.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
03.10 third part backup of DB1
03.30 SQL Server differnatial DB backup of DB1
04.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
My questions now are:
Are my SQL Server backups valid (DB,Differenatial and T-LOG)?
In case of a restore operation, can I use my SQL Server backups without problem?
In other words, can we leave the third part backup tool active or it should be taken away?
Can anybody clarify this for me?
Thank you in advance.

Can anyone recomend an EXTREEMLY user friendly web based data mapping / conversion tool? I am wanting to transform csv, xml, database sources into csv, xml, db sources. There are a ton of Windows based applications (ie: www.altova.com / mapforce). I am looking for something I can expose via the web...
users has ability to upload a csv file and then define how the data would be mapped to an output source (say another csv or xml). In addition having functions like concantination, sum, if-exists, etc...
Does SSIS have a user friendly interface or has someone written some interactive tools on top of SSIS.
Any information will be greatly apreciated.
Thanx

I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments. Here is high level requirements.
1. We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database. When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them.
2. I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.
I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup. I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible. We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.

Using Ola Hallengren's scripts I do a full backup of a database on a Sunday. Then differential backups every 6 hours and log backups every hour. I would like to keep a full week of backups based off the full backup done on Sunday. Is there a way for me to clear out the diff and log folders after the successful full backup on Sunday nights?

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).
Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.
Thanks!

I have 2 tables
1) One With ExchangeRates
a. CurrencyCode ValidFromPeriod Rate
b. EX1 200801 1
c. EX1 200803 2
d. EX1 200805 3
2) One with just OrderHeaders
a. ID CurrencyCode Period
b. 1 EX1 200801
c. 2 EX1 200802
d. 3 EX1 200803
e. 4 EX1 200804
f. 5 EX1 200805
The Idea is to link these orderheaders with their correct ExchangeRate. Which I only managed to do by using a function. Is there a beter (faster) way to do it?
Code Snippet
SELECT OrderHeaders.ID, OrderHeaders.CurrencyCode, OrderHeaders.Period, dbo.GetExchangeRate(OrderHeaders.CurrencyCode, OrderHeaders.Period) AS ExchangeRate FROM OrderHeaders
FUNCTION GetExchangeRate
@CurrencyCode VarChar(3),
@Period int
BEGIN
DECLARE @VarResult Float
SET @VarResult =0
SELECT TOP 1 @VarResult=Rate FROM ExchangeRates WHERE CurrencyCode=@CurrencyCode AND ValidFromPeriod<=@Period ORDER BY ValidFromPeriod DESC
Return @VarResult
END

I'm trying to test out a restore scenario for a large database. It contains several files, each one is backed up when we are finished inserting data into it. No changes are made to the data after insert. All changes happen in tables in the primary file group.
So, I backup the primary file, the log, the first "partitioned" file, the log, the next "partitioned" file, the log, etc, etc, etc. Now, I delete one of the tables residing on one of the partitioned files and want to restore it. For arguments sake, let's say I have a primary file, and 5 partitioned files. I delete the table which was on file 3.
I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the steps to restore under these circumstances. I thought I understood it but, apparently not. When I try to restore, I'm told I must first backup the tail of the log. Having done that, I restore file 3, and all subsequent log files. Now, I'm right back where I was (missing the deleted table). When I try to roll back to a point in time before the delete...it claims to be successful but, nothing perceptable is different...??
Can someone help set me straight here?

I had to replace my hard drive which was going bad. I reinstalled Sql 2005 and now need to restore the backup that I have. I selected Restore Database and chose From Device, and selected the backup location on J: drive and selected the backup file which has no extenstion. I checked the checkbox next to the backup set to restore. Click OK and then I get this error message:
Restore failed for Server
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Directory lookup for the file "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLdataMyDB_Data.MDF" failed with the operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
I don't know why it is looking for a MDF file as this was never in the Backup folder. Can someone please help me on this? I thought I was doing the right thing making a backup all along and now I can't restore it!

Hi I am operating my databases under "trunc log on checkpoint" mode as I do not need point of failure recoverability.I was performing a recovery test using a backup which resulted in it being unsuccessful .Error Message received was
"Recovery has failed because a nonlogged operation could not be redone.Use the RESTORE statement to restore all data in filegroup PRIMARY to a pt beyond the nonlogged changes"
Isnt sql*server supposed to prevent a non-logged operation while a backup is in progress? Also how do i prevent such a situation from recurring.
If i switch to single user mode before a backup how do i prevent exisiting users from accessing ... without bouncing my sql*server?
