Is There A Command That Would Stop A Sql Query At A Certain Point?
Jan 22, 2008
I was wondering if there was a command in SQL that you could enter that would stop the execution of a query at a specified spot.
For instance if you were debugging what a batch of update queries were doing to a table and you wanted to stop it at a specific point. I realize you can select the code you want to run, but I would prefer to enter something at a point that stays whether I am selecting it or not. That way when I am looking at a 1000 lines of code I don't have to remember everytime how much to select .
So are there any commands like that? I was thinking something like 'Stop' in VBA but that doesn't work

Hey Guys, I have a question. I know you can put a 'STOP' command in VBA code. Is there something like that for SQL Server Stored Procedures?

Hello all,
First off, I appreciate the time that those of you reading and responding to this request are offering. My quesiton is a theoretical and hopefully simple one, and yet I have been unable to find an answer to it on other searches or sources.
Here's the situation. I am working with SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I have a series of databases, all of which are in Full recovery mode, using a backup device for the full database backups and a separate device for the log backups. The full backups are run every four days during non-business hours. The log backups are run every half hour.
Last week, one of my coworkers found that some rarely-used data was unavailable, and wanted to restore a database to a point in time where the data was available. He told me that point in time was some time back in November.
To accomplish this, I restored the database (in a separate database, as to not overwrite my production database) using the Point in Time Recovery option. I selected November from the "To a point in time" window (I should note that this window is always grey, never white like most active windows, it seems), and the full database backup and the subsequent logs all became available in the "Select the backup sets to restore" window.
I then tried a bevy of different options from the "Options" screen. However, every restore succeeds (ie: it doesn't error out), but seems to be bringing the database back to a current point in time. It's never actually going back to the point in time I specify.
My questions are as follows:
a) Is it possible to do a point in time recovery to a point in time BEFORE the last full database backup?
b) If so, what options would you recommend I use? (ie: "Overwrite the existing database", restore with recovery, etc etc).
I again appreciate any and all advice I receive, and I look forward to hearing from anyone and everyone on this topic. Thank you.
Ryan

Greetings everyone! Is there a way to stop query analyzer from processing remaining querystatements? Let's say i have the following query in query analyzer:query statementsif conditionbeginquery statementsstop the queryendquery statementsif conditionbeginquery statementsstop the queryendis there a way to stop the query from executing the statements in thesecond query when the first condition is met?i have searched BOL and google but i couldn't find anything. I hopeanybody out there can help me.BTW, i'm executing this statements directly in QA, not from within myprogram. The query statement and if condition pair is plenty. i guess ican use an else statement but it would be nested too deep. if there isa simpler way to do it please point me to the right direction or to anylink that'll get me going. Thanks in advance.diego

Hey guys and gals,
I'm having a real problem with this query at the moment...
Basically I have to produce a query which will tell me the total number of people employed by the company at any given date and the total salary for all these people.
We have a people table and a career table.
People(unique_identifier, known_as_and_surname, start_date, termination_date ...)
Career(unique_identifier, parent_identifier, career_date, basic_pay ...)
Relationship people.unique_identifier = career.parent_identifier
Employees can be identified like so
SELECT *
FROM people
WHERE start_date <= DateSelected
AND (termination_date > DateSelected
OR termination_date IS NULL)
Passing the selected date to the query is no trouble at all I am just having problems with the point in time side of this.
All and any help is greatly appreciated :)
~George
P.S. SQL Server 2000 ;)

I have the following query:
SELECT AVG(respondent_question.answer)
Now, the 'answer' column is an integer. However, I want the query to return a floating point number with one decimal place (i.e., 5.4, 2.3)
Since the column is an integer, the query returns only an integer by rounding to the nearest integer. How can I do this? Thanks!

CREATE TABLE SampleData (
CoID nvarchar(255),
Company varchar(255),
FirstName varchar(255),
LastName varchar(255),
JobLevel varchar(255))
[Code] ....
I am trying to make changes to the above query. This query will select 2 records per Company with top down priority on JobLevel. For example: This query will select 2 records from "123 Inc", where they have 2 Managers and 3 Staff contacts. The return results selects (2) managers and no staff records and FirstName and LastName are not duplicate. Then for "A Small Co.", they have 1 VP, 1 Director, 1 Manager and 3 Staff contacts. the return results chooses 1 VP and 1 Director and no managers or staff level people. And so on and so forth for the remainder of the companies.
What I was trying to accomplish is having this same query point to the database tables instead creating a table each and every time. I have this data residing in our database. I tried to make the change so it would point to the database tables but it kept giving me errors. This is way more complex than I thought.
My failed attempt:
Select *
From CampServ.dbo.SampleFakeCustomerData
//This is where I am getting stuck
WITH Priorities(Priority, JobLevel) AS(
SELECT 1, 'VP' UNION ALL
SELECT 2, 'Director' UNION ALL
[Code] ....

HI
I have a very simple query that simply does this: select * from badgetemplates where badgeid=39 , the badge template table has four fields, one of them is of type IMAGE, however the data on badge 39 IMAGE field only amounts to about 600kb, it used to run very quickly (a second or so) now it takes over a minute, i have checked this via the SQL profiler. What is strange is if I remove some of the data stored within the IMAGE field and reduce it to much smaller that 600kb it runs very quickly again. 600kb is fairly small and it used to return this very quickly as I say. Other queries are running at normal speed and the server perfomance does not seem to be reduced elsewhere, it only seems to have effected this only table but only with data over a certain size, the table itself only contains 20 or so rows. What could this be?!
Any help would be really appreciated as I have no clue.....

This store procedure will get some executable queries from the select statement, the cursor will fetch each rows to execute the query and insert the queries into table_3 to mark as 'E'. Until 17:00, this store procedure will stop execute the queries and just get the queries from select statement insert into table_3 to mark as 'C'.
I don't know why the outputs in table_3 are quiet different than I think. This store procedure comes out with two exactly same queries and one marked as C and another marked as E.

I'm running SQL Server 2005 on a Server 2003 machine serving both our home network as well as a remote site through a point-to-point T1. While file transfer speeds are up to par, the remote site's interaction with SQL Server (Point of sale system) is very slow. After testing I am certain that it has nothing to do with the actual physical machine in place neither is it an issue with the program itself since speeds are as they are supposed to be over the home network lan. It seems that there might be a packet size issue or something of the sort. Has anyone dealt with this before or have any thoughts?
Thanks,
Peter

Has any of you ever had problems with the ROUND command?
I have this operation:
ROUND((FIELD1 / 360 * FIELD5),3) AS FIELD7
(I want the result to be rounded at the third decimal).
SQL makes mistakes in rounding. It seems to me that
the problem relies in the quantity of decimals taken
into account in any single step of the operation.
Thank you in advance.

Do you know of a way, in the OLE DB Command (Executing a sql command for each record), to specify a lock hint?
Example: in my component, I want to update a table but I want to specify a ROWLOCK or UPDLOCK hint.
When I try using this sql statement in the 'SqlCommand' property:
UPDATE DIM_Accounts WITH (UPDLOCK)
SET COL1 = ''
SSIS gives a syntax error.
Do you know any workarounds?
Thanks!

When my colleague makes any change to a query containing a derived table, the word 'WITH' followed by a lot of graphical characters appears after the alias, rendering the query unusable. We have tried this with various existing and new, simple queries, all to no avail. We are editing the queries in Visual Studio 2003, and he does not get this effect when using Visual Studio 2005. I can edit the query in 2003 on my laptop with no ill effects.

I would like to be able to view the complete SQL command that is sent from a Microsoft Access query which has linked SQL Server tables through ODBC, and the query also has some VBA functions manipulating and filtering data.I tried using the SQL Profiler to view the sql command send to SQL Server but all I see is the simple query format and some of the fields. I don't see the fields that have a VBA function such as trim(fieldname) etc in the column. And If I use a VBA fucntion in the Criteria then nothing shows up in SQL Profiled under the TextData column. How can I see the complete SQL command sent to SQL Server?
