Is There A Sample Way To Define String Constant Which Every Stored Procedure Can Use In SQL 2005 ?

Sep 26, 2006

Is there a sample way to define string constant which every stored procedure can use in SQL 2005 ?

1. In stored procedure A, there is
select a1,a2,a3,a4 from mytable where usename='qaz'

2. In stored procedure B, there is
select a1,a2,a3,a4 from mytable where VisitNumber>3

3. I hope there is a sample way to define string constant
such as: constant mystring='a1,a2,a3,a4'

4. So I can use this string constant both stored procedure A and stored procedure b
such as:
select mystring from mytable where usename='qaz'
select mystring from mytable where VisitNumber>3

5. How can I do that? is there a sample way? Mnay Thanks!

How To Define A Constant Value In Sql Query Analyzer

Jan 29, 2008

I want to run some sql code from Query Analyzer. The sql code uses parameters.How do I define the parameter before setting it to a value? I don't want to hardcode the input parameteres.
Ex:
create @Prim -- This is the line I need help on. Instead of "create", what is                      -- the proper way of setting this value ?
set @Prime=13
SELECT Prime.Quaternion,   Gaussian.RegionId,   Laplace.Primer,

Accessing A Stored Procedure From ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express:How To Define/add 1 Output && 2 Input Parameters In Param. Coll.?

Feb 23, 2008

Hi all,

In a Database "AP" of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE), I have a stored procedure "spInvTotal3":

CREATE PROC [dbo].[spInvTotal3]

@InvTotal money OUTPUT,

@DateVar smalldatetime = NULL,

@VendorVar varchar(40) = '%'

This stored procedure "spInvTotal3" worked nicely and I got the Results: My Invoice Total = $2,211.01 in
my SSMSE by using either of 2 sets of the following EXEC code:
(1)
USE AP
GO
--Code that passes the parameters by position
DECLARE @MyInvTotal money
EXEC spInvTotal3 @MyInvTotal OUTPUT, '2006-06-01', 'P%'
PRINT 'My Invoice Total = $' + CONVERT(varchar,@MyInvTotal,1)
GO
(2)
USE AP
GO
DECLARE @InvTotal as money
EXEC spInvTotal3
@InvTotal = @InvTotal OUTPUT,
@DateVar = '2006-06-01',
@VendorVar = '%'
SELECT @InvTotal
GO
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I want to print out the result of @InvTotal OUTPUT in the Windows Application of my ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express programming. I have created a project "spInvTotal.vb" in my VB 2005 Express with the following code:

Imports System.Data

Imports System.Data.SqlClient

Imports System.Data.SqlTypes

Public Class Form1

Public Sub printMyInvTotal()

Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS; Initial Catalog=AP; Integrated Security=SSPI;"

Dim conn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)

Try

conn.Open()

Dim cmd As New SqlCommand

cmd.Connection = conn

cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

cmd.CommandText = "[dbo].[spInvTotal3]"

Dim param As New SqlParameter("@InvTotal", SqlDbType.Money)

param.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output

cmd.Parameters.Add(param)

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()

'Print out the InvTotal in TextBox1

TextBox1.Text = param.Value

Catch ex As Exception

MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)

Throw

Finally

conn.Close()

End Try

End Sub

End Class
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I executed the above code and I got no errors, no warnings and no output in the TextBox1 for the result of "InvTotal"!!??
I have 4 questions to ask for solving the problems in this project:
#1 Question: I do not know how to do the "DataBinding" for "Name" in the "Text.Box1".
How can I do it?
#2 Question: Did I set the CommandType property of the command object to
CommandType.StoredProcedure correctly?
#3 Question: How can I define the 1 output parameter (@InvTotal) and
2 input parameters (@DateVar and @VendorVar), add them to
the Parameters Collection of the command object, and set their values
before I execute the command?
#4 Question: If I miss anything in print out the result for this project, what do I miss?

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Using A Stored Procedure Variable To Define A Where Clause

Sep 12, 2007

Hi all,

I'm trying to build a Where clause in a stored procedure based on the information that is passed into the stored procedure. Because I don't know how many items will be passed into the stored procedure, I'm having to split the string on a specific character and build the Where clause based on how many strings are found.

However, when I try to execute the Where clause it throws an error.

Code Snippet

ALTER PROCEDURE getUsersAddress
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@LName varchar(1000)
@City varchar(1000),
@State varchar(1000),
@License varchar(1000)

AS

declare @Count as int
declare @x as int
declare @wLName as varchar(2000)
declare @wCityas varchar(2000)
declare @wStateas varchar(2000)
declare @wLicense as varchar(2000)

BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;

if right(rtrim(@LName),1) <> ';'
begin
set @LName = @LName + ';'
end

set @Count = PATINDEX('%;%',@LName)

set @wLName = '(tblUsers.LName = '''
while @Count <> 0
begin
set @wLName = @wLName + left(@LName, @Count - 1)

set @LName = stuff(@LName, 1, @Count, '')
set @Count = PATINDEX('%;%',@LName);

if @Count <> 0
begin
set @wLName = @wLName + ''') OR (tblUsers.LName = '''
end
else
begin
set @wLName = @wLName + ''')'
end
end

print cast(@wLName as varchar(5000))

-- Insert statements for procedure here
SELECT
tblUsers.FullName,
tblUsers.Addy1,
tblUsers.Addy2,
tblUsers.City,
tblState.StateAbbr,
tblUsers.Zip,
tblUsers.Zip4
FROM
tblUsers
INNER JOIN tblState ON tblUsers.FK_StateID = tblState.StateID
INNER JOIN tblUserDetails ON tblUsers.UserID = tblUserDetails.FK_UserID
WHERE
(@wLName) OR
(tblUsers.City = @City) OR
(tblState.StateAbbr = @State) OR
(tblUserDetails.CDLType = @License)
END
So when I print do an exec getUsersAddress 'Johnson;Smith', 'City;Test City', 'TX;OK', 'Class A;Class B'

@wLName comes out as (tblUsers.LName = 'Johnson') OR (tblUsers.LName = 'Smith')

However, I can't save the procedure as it gives me an error of:
An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'OR'.

When I copy and paste the @wLName value in place of @wLName in the Where clause it works, so how can I get the @wLName variable to work in that Where clause?

Problem About Pass A Big String (over 8000 Characters) To A Variable Nvarchar(max) In Stored Procedure In SQL 2005!

Named SQL 2005 Instance Multiple Active Recordsets-C# Stored Procedure-Connection String

May 7, 2008

I am working on a C# stored procedure for SQL 2005, and i've uncovered a couple questions.

First a description of the procedure:

I have a series of equations taking place to calculate a score based on activities in which the user participated in, that will give them an over all grade or rating. The calculations currently take place in the database, and I am moving this from T-SQL to C# CRL.

1. In order to connect the stored procedure to the database I use a SqlConnection and a SqlCommand to execute either dynamic sql or a stored procedure to return data to a data reader. Is there an easier way to connect to the database? In SSMS if i open up the query it knows what database i am connected to. Do I have to make a sql connection in C# stored Procedures?

2. I have multiple functions within the main C# Stored Procedure that I'm working on. This ends up requiring Multiple Active Recordsets. I must set this withing the connection string. Seeing as I'm using a named instance of SQL 2005, I now must put the userid, password, and server name into the code. Is there a more secure way to connect to SQL Server in a C# Stored procedure that allows MARS?

3. I encryped the connection string, and put it into the assembly, I wrote a decryption class, and in the procedure itself everytime I need to refrence the connection string, I call it, decrypt it, and pass it along. But my code to decrypt the connection string is in the compiled DLL, if the server was ever compromised the encrypted connection string and the key to decrypt it are sitting in the DLL. Is there a config file that I can use for C# Stored Procedures?

4. If I have to keep the connection string in the file, then I need to change that per environment. Example I have 3 test environments before production. So I would need to change the connection string for each file. That may be fine for one procedure, but what if I have 20, that will quickly get of hand?

5. Along the security lines, can the assembly for a C# Stored Procedure be called from outside the assembly? From a command prompt, or by a maliceous program? Or could it be called directly by a .NET application instead of going through a T-SQL Stored Procedure that is using
WITH EXECUTE AS CALLER
AS
EXTERNAL NAME [PROJECTNAME].[CLASSNAME].[METHODNAME]

Thanks

How Do I Define Connection String ?

Sep 20, 2005

Hi, I am trying to connect to my local SQL Server through a webform ( on VS.NET ). My web.config shows something like this -
sqlConnectionString="data source=IP address;Trusted_Connection=yes"and the tutorial I am following says something this - SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(    "server=(local)\NetSDK;database=pubs;Integrated Security=SSPI");If I just replace the NetSDK either with my IP address or the servername (my machine name), I get a SQLException that server doesn't exist or access denied. I have specified "windows authentication". How do I correctly define my connection string ? Please guide me.Thanks,sbs.

FROM LabTests

ORDER BY LabTests.Result DESC

GO

(2) /////--spTopSixAnalytesEXEC.sql--//////////////

USE ssmsExpressDB

GO
EXEC spTopSixAnalytes
GO

I executed them and got the following results in SSMSE:
TopSixAnalytes Unit AnalyteName

2 220.30 ug/Kg Acetone
3 211.90 ug/Kg Acetone
4 140.30 ug/L Acetone

//////////////////--spTopSixAnalytes.vb--///////////

Public Class Form1

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = SSPI; Initial Catalog = ssmsExpressDB;")

Dim sqlDataAdapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdaptor("[spTopSixAnalytes]", sqlConnection)

sqlDataAdapter.SelectCommand.Command.Type = CommandType.StoredProcedure

'Pass the name of the DataSet through the overloaded contructor

'of the DataSet class.

Dim dataSet As DataSet ("ssmsExpressDB")

sqlConnection.Open()

sqlDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet)

sqlConnection.Close()

End Sub

End Class
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I executed the above code and I got the following 4 errors:
Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb)
Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

More Information for you to know:
I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.

SQL String Into Stored Procedure

Apr 5, 2006

Not sure this is the right forum as I'm not sure quite what the problem is, but I have a feeeling it's the stored procedure that I'm using to replace the SQL string I used previously.I have a search form used to find records in a (SQL Server 2005) db. The form has a number of textboxes and corresponding checkboxes. The user types in a value they want to search for (e.g. search for a surname)  and then selects the corresponding checkbox to indicate this. Or they can search for both surname and firstname by typing in the values in the correct textboxes and selecting the checkboxes corressponding to surname and firstname.The code to make this work looks like this:----------------------------------------        Dim conn As SqlConnection        Dim comm As SqlCommand        Dim param As SqlParameter        Dim param2 As SqlParameter        Dim param3 As SqlParameter        Dim param4 As SqlParameter        Dim objDataset As DataSet        Dim objAdapter As SqlDataAdapter        conn=NewSqlConnection("blah, blah")        comm = New SqlCommand        'set properties of comm so it uses conn & recognises which stored proc to execute        comm.Connection = conn        comm.CommandText = "SPSearchTest3"        comm.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure        'create input parameter, set it's type and value        param = comm.CreateParameter        param.ParameterName = "@empid"        param.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input        param.Value = txtPatID.Text        param2 = comm.CreateParameter        param2.ParameterName = "@LastName"        param2.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input        param2.Value = txtSurname.Text        comm.Parameters.Add(param)        comm.Parameters.Add(param2)        conn.Open()               objAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter(comm)        objDataset = New DataSet        objAdapter.Fill(objDataset)        dgrdRegistration.DataSource = objDataset        dgrdRegistration.DataBind()        conn.Close()------------------------------------While the stored procedure is this:------------------------------    @EmpID int,    @LastName nvarchar(20)    ASSELECT EmployeeID,    LastName,    Firstname,    BirthDate,    Address,    title,    addressFROM employeesWHERE (DataLength(@EmpID) = 0 OR EmployeeID = @EmpID)AND (DataLength(@LastName) = 0 OR LastName = @LastName)------------------------------This will work if I search using EmployeeID and Surname or only by EmployeeID, but I don't get any results if I search only for Surname, even though I know the record(s) exits in the db and I've spelled it correctly. Can someone point out where I'm going wrong?(Incidentally if I have a procedure with has only one parameter 'surname' or 'employeeID', it works fine!)Thanks very much and sorry about the long-winded post.

T-Sql Stored Procedure Comparing String

If i change ([Area] = @Area) to ([Area] = 'The First Area') it is fine. The only problem i see is that the @Area has spaces, but i even tried passing 'The First Area' with the quotes and it still didnt work.Please help, its got to be something simple.Thanks In Advance

How To Return A String From A Stored Procedure

Up till now I've used SP's for updates and only ever needed to return error messages.

Now I have an SP that checks and validates something and has to return a string containing the result, (always a string/varchar!)

It works fine in Query Analyzer, I just need a demo of how to incorporate it into a VB app.

Hope that makes sense.

Stored Procedure String Manipulation

Nov 2, 2006

I am somewhat new to the world of programming with SQL Server and was wondering if this could be done. Well I know it can be done but was wondering how it might be done.

I have a DTS package created to import a table from and AS400 server. What I need to do is take one field and parse that field into 5 different values for 5 new fields.

Here is what I know needs to be done but not sure how to put into the procedure.

CREATE proc ChangeHIS

as
--Declare Variables
Declare @LastName varchar,
@FirstName varchar,
@MI varchar,
@ID varchar,
@Dept varchar,
@intCount int,
@UserName varchar,
@strTemp varchar

--Create Temporary Table

CREATE TABLE [EmployeeAudit].[dbo].[tmpTable] (
[UPUPRF] varchar (10),
[UPTEXT] varchar (50)
)

select [UPUPRF], [UPTEXT] from tblHIS into tmpTable

GO

And something dealing with the below code as well.

@tmpString = RTRIM(LTRIM(@tmpString))

If charindex(@tmpString, ",") > 0
--'Manuel, Michael J - 78672 - SR MIS SUPPORT SPEC'
@LastName = Left(@tmpString, charindex(@tmpString, ","))
@tmpString = RTRIM(LTRIM(Right(@tmpString, Len(@tmpString) - charindex(@tmpString, ",") + 1)))
--'Michael J - 78672 - SR MIS SUPPORT SPEC'
@FirstName = Left(@tmpString, charindex(@tmpString, " "))
@tmpString = RTRIM(LTRIM(Right(@tmpString, Len(@tmpString) - charindex(@tmpString, " ") + 1)))
If charindex(@tmpString, "-") > 1
--'J - 78672 - SR MIS SUPPORT SPEC'
@MI = Left(@tmpString, 1)
@tmpSting = RTRIM(LTRIM(Right(@tmpString, Len(@tmpString) - 2)
End
--'- 78672 - SR MIS SUPPORT SPEC'
@ID = Left(@tmpString, charindex(@tmpString, " - "))
@tmpString = RTRIM(LTRIM(Right(@tmpString, Len(@tmpString) - charindex(@tmpString, " - ") + 3)))
--'SR MIS SUPPORT SPEC'
@Dept = @tmpString
End

Hope someone can point me in the right direction

Problems Passing String Value To Stored Procedure

Hello, I'm trying to pass a simple string value to a stored procedure and just can't seem to make it work.  I'm baffled since I know how to pass an integer to a stored procedure.  In the example below, I don't get any compile errors or page load errors but my repeater doesn't populate (even though I know for certain the word "hello" is actually in the BlogTxt field in the db.  If I change the stored procedure to say...WHERE BlogTxt LIKE '%hello%'then the results do indeed show up in the repeater.I ultimately would like to pass text from a textbox control or maybe even a querystring to the stored procedure.  Then I'll move on to passing multiple "keywords" to it. :)My relevant code is below.  Thanks in advance for any help.*******************ViewData.ascx.vb file*******************Private strSearch As String
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.LoadTry Dim objBlogController As New BlogController 'for testing purposes  strSearch = "hello" repeaterSearchResults.DataSource = objBlogController.SearchBlog(strSearch) repeaterSearchResults.DataBind()Catch exc As Exception  ProcessModuleLoadException(Me, exc)End TryEnd Sub----------------------------------------

Can SQL Break An Array Into One String? [Stored Procedure]

Jun 14, 2006

Hello, I have a question on sql stored procedures.I have such a procedure, which returnes me rows with ID-s.Then in my asp.net page I make from that Id-s a string likeSELECT * FROM [eai.Documents] WHERE CategoryId=11 OR CategoryId=16 OR CategoryId=18.
My question is: Can I do the same in my stored procedure? Here is it:set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

(
@Id int

declare @path varchar(100);
SELECT @path=Path FROM [eai.FileCategories] WHERE Id = @Id;
SELECT Id, ParentCategoryId, Name, NumActiveAds FROM [eai.FileCategories]
WHERE Path LIKE @Path + '%'
ORDER BY Path

Converting A String To Datetime In A Stored Procedure

Aug 19, 2004

I have a stored procedure called from ASP code, and when it is executed, the stored procedure takes in a date as an attribute.

But since the stored procedure call is really just a string in the code, it is taking in the value as a string. So in my stored procedure, I want to convert a string value to a date value.

Any idea how this is done?

How To Retrieve Large String From Stored Procedure?

May 4, 2007

Hello! This is my scenario...

Development - Visual Studio 2005
Database - MS SQL 2005

I have written a stored procedure that has a output parameter whose type is NVARCHAR(MAX). Then I use C# to wrap this stored procedure in OLEDB way. That means the OleDbType for that parameter is VarWChar.

This works fine if the string size is less than 4000. If more than 4000, the remaining part will be chopped off. The situation gets worst if I replace VarWChar with LongVarWChar. There is no error nor warning at compiling time. But there is an exception at run time.

So... Does anyone here can help me out? Thanks in advance.

Passing A Multivalued String To Stored Procedure

Oct 14, 2007

I have a multivalued parameters populated from a dataset with country codes: US,CA,HK etc... I tried to pass the parameter to the stored procedured but that did not work. I did some research and found out that I won't be able to do that.

Writing Queries that Map to Multivalued Report Parameters

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms155917.aspx

You can define a multivalued parameter for any report parameter that you create. However, if you want to pass multiple parameter values back to a query, the following requirements must be satisfied:
The data source must be SQL Server, Oracle, or Analysis Services.
The data source cannot be a stored procedure. Reporting Services does not support passing a multivalued parameter array to a stored procedure.
The query must use an IN statement to specify the parameter.
If I am not able to pass the parameter that way, what is the best way to accomplish my goal?
Thanks,
Elie

How To Pass A GUID String To A Varchar In SQL Stored Procedure

Aug 26, 2007

In my .NET app I have a search user control.  The search control allows the user to pick a series of different data elements in order to further refine your display results.  Typically I store the values select in a VarChar(5000) field in the DB.  One of the items I recently incorporated into the search tool is a userID (GUID) of the person handling the customer.  When I go to pass the selected value to the stored proc

objUpdCommand.Parameters.Add("@criteria", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = strCriteria;
I get: Failed to convert parameter value from a String to a Guid.
Ugh!  It's a string, dummy!!!   I have even tried:
objUpdCommand.Parameters.Add("@criteria", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = new Guid(strCriteria).ToString();
 and

objUpdCommand.Parameters.Add("@criteria", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = new Guid(strCriteria).ToString("B");
but to no avail.  How can I pass this to the stored proc without regard for it being a GUID in my app?

Stored Procedure To Parse Delimited String To Table?

Apr 10, 2015

SP to parse a delimited string and insert the result in a table. I am using SQL Server 2008 R2. I have 2 tables - RawData & WIP. I have Robots on a manufacturing line capable of moving data to a DB. I move the raw data to RawData. On insert [RawData], I want to parse the string and move the contents to WIP as indicated below. I will run reports against the WIP Table.

Also, after the string is parsed, I'd like to change the Archive column, the _0 at the end of the raw string to 1 in the WIP table to indicate a successful parse.

Sample Strings - [RawData Table]
04102015_114830_10_013_9_8_6_99999_Test 1_1_0
04102015_115030_10_013_9_8_6_99999_Test 2_1_0

Desired Output - [WIP Table]

Date Time Plant Program Line Zone Station BadgeID Message Alarm Archive
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
04102015 114830 10 13 9 8 6 99999 Test 1 1 1
04102015 115030 10 13 9 8 6 99999 Test 2 1 1
