Unable To Access MSSQLSERVER From Client

Dec 20, 2005

Hi,

I have SQL Server 2005 installed and functioning (it does everything I've asked it to do locally). I also have the Express and Standard Editions installed on a computer running WinXPPro SP2 with all the WinUpdates applied. I also have VS2005 installed on this computer. I've done some development work on this computer, using VS2005 to create a SQLDB, connect to it, add data, etc. This is all okay.

The problem is I cannot connect to the SQL Server from the client computer. I installed the client tools on this XP Pro box along with all the WinUpdates. Here's what I can do...

I can ping the SQL Server by name (the name gets resolved).
I can copy files between the two computers using Explorer.
I enabled "Allow remote connections to this server" in the Server Properties / Connections page.
I did not change the default port of 1433.
The TCP/IP protocal is enabled in the Configuration Manager.
The Surface Area has been configured to allow local and remote connections using TCP/IP and named pipes.
SQLBrowser surface is running as is the MSSQLSERVER service.

So what's going on? I am new to SQL Server to it may be something very simple / obvious.

Thanks for your help,
Scott

Stored Procedure For Verifying Data Existence

Jun 26, 2006

Hello All,
I'm trying to develop a stored procedure that would do one of TWO things:
1.  Return a 'status' that a value does not exist, if I were to provide the parameter via an ASP.NET2.0 page
2.  If it does exists, to return the row data associated with that value (id number)
The stored procedure would search a SQL Server table within it self first.  It that fails it would look at an Oracle table (work order table).  And if that fails to return a 'row' to look through another Oracle table (work request table).  If that doesn't occur, then it would throw the result as described in #2.
If the result exists in one of the TWO Oracle tables it would then insert that row into the first SQL Server table that the stored procedure searched through AND would return the row set to the ASP.NET page.
While all this is happening, I was hoping to get some insight as to how to create a "Please Wait..." feedback and then moving to the final result.
Looking forward to the wise words of the many on this forum, as I have experienced in the past!  :)

Single Direction Transfer Of Data In Merged Publication (subscriber To Publisher)

May 28, 2008

Hi,
We have an existing merged replication schema that works well. One of the
tables is named audit. Currently this is a bidirectional transfer. However,
we want a new audit table that will transfer data from the subscriber to the
publisher and not the other way round. I have a script that was generated as a backup script when replication was first created. I have no idea which parameter to change in order to have the merge replication going from subscriber to publisher. Any advise is helpful. Thanks.

Using SQL 2000 Tool To Access SQL 7

May 3, 2001

Our installation installed an application using SQL 2000. This now gives us both
SQL 7 applications to support and a SQL 2000 application.

SQL 2000 client tools were installed on my desktop replacing the SQL 7 client
tools. I understand that SQL 7 tools will not support SQL 2000, but SQL 2000
tools support both SQL 7 and SQL 2000.

I have a SQL 7 apps in two different domains. I am able to register in EM the server
in the domain I logon too, but am unable to register the server in the other domain.

Any ideas on how to register a SQL 7 server in a domain other than the one my desktop
is logged in to?

Thanks in advance!!!

SQL Tools :: How To View MS-Access Query Command In Server Profiled Or In Another Tool

Aug 12, 2015

I would like to be able to view the complete SQL command that is sent from a Microsoft Access query which has linked SQL Server tables through ODBC, and the query also has some VBA functions manipulating and filtering data.I tried using the SQL Profiler to view the sql command send to SQL Server but all I see is the simple query format and some of the fields. I don't see the fields that have a VBA function such as trim(fieldname) etc in the column. And If I use a VBA fucntion in the Criteria then nothing shows up in SQL Profiled under the TextData column. How can I see the complete SQL command sent to SQL Server?

I Have a problem when copying data from one server to another in Management studio, I need to create and exact copy of the original because of primary key relationships,

Currently when I export the data the data will run through an insert type statement, which means that all PKs are reissued, rather than being duplicated from the original, How can I be sure that the data will be copied exactly how it is on one server to the other.

SQL 2012 :: Data Modeling Tool For A Data Warehouse?

Oct 19, 2015

I need a recommendation on a data modeling tool that can be used with a data warehouse. My warehouse is running SQL 2012.

Here is my challenge: Most of the tables in the warehouse do not have primary keys and none of the tables have foreign keys on them. However, there are indexes and unique keys/indexes on the tables. I am looking for a tool that I can create virtual relationships on how the data is related, so it is visually easier for the ETL developers to write the code.

I have looked at both ER/Studio 11 and ERwin 9.6. Neither of them do it exactly the way I want it too. However, ER/Studio is pretty close.

Excel Merged Cells

May 15, 2007

Hi

I'm trying to eliminate merged cells when exporting a report to Excel. My problem being my report textbox above my table.

I've searched and found that making the textbox the same width as the first column eliminates the merging. Perfect, it does. But when the report is viewed in the report viewer, the textbox can only expand vertically. So the title looks terrible because column one is not wide.

I've read that expand horizontally is not an option
I don't seem to be able to tell it not to output that text box, which would be an option if there is no other answer
I can't have the text box the size I want it, due it creating merged cells
I don't want to export it as a CSV

Are there any other options available or am missing something?

Cheers

Merged Cells And CanGrow

Oct 16, 2007

Is there a reason why a single cell in a table with the CanGrow property set to true will grow down, and merged cells grow right, and is there any way around it?

I have a report that I have to display comments, so I merged 2 cells put the comment field in it, and when it is displayed in the browser, it expands off the page.

When it prints, it seems to be fine, but the majority of my users will be viewing online in a browser.

Any ideas? just an HTML thing I am thinking, and nothing can be done about it.

Thanks

Programatically Verifying SQL Syntax

Nov 24, 2004

OK, so I'm working on a project that requires the dynamic generation of SQL statements. Now in Visual Studio .NET I'm sure many of you have used that wonderful visual database tool that allows you to magically "verify sql syntax" at the click of a button. It takes a query that looks like this:

"SELECT A.AFFID, A.UserName, A.Pass, A.FirstName, A.LastName, A.Company, A.Street, A.City, A.State, A.ZIP, A.Country, A.phone, P.EMail, A.RecieveEMail, A.SSN, A.JoinDate, A.AffType, P.ProductId, P.BuyerId FROM Affiliates A, Purchases P WHERE (ProductId > 0) ORDER BY 1"

and transforms it into something that looks like this:

"SELECT A.AFFID, A.UserName, A.Pass, A.FirstName, A.LastName, A.Company, A.Street, A.City, A.State, A.ZIP, A.Country, A.phone, P.Email, A.RecieveEMail, A.SSN, A.JoinDate, A.AffType, P.ProductID, P.BuyerID
FROM Affiliates A CROSS JOIN Purchases P
WHERE (P.ProductID > 0)
ORDER BY A.AFFID"

My question is: is there anything in the .NET platform that would allow me to achieve the same kind of result programatically (i.e. transform standard sql to tsql syntax and verify the syntax of the query at run time)?

Any help would be appreciated! Cheers.

Need Help In Verifying User Login

Feb 19, 2005

To: All,

Hi, well thanks for reading this thread. Anyway I got a problem where i can't accurately verify whether a user had successfully login to my application.

I got a database to store the user name and password. So whenever a user login, i would use a while loop to read all the user name and password, and an if statement to verify whether the user's name and password matches to the ones stored in the database. This method doesn't work when there are multiple records in my database, because the if statement would compare the user given name and password with all the user name and password in the database. Hence resulting a mismatch.

Well I really hope that you understand what my problem is, really need help with this problem as I'm really clueless. Can somebody please help me, please teach me how to rectify this problem?

Well i think the core problem would be to compare the user name and password with the records in the database one at a time, and once it is found, stop comparing and allow user to enter site.

Yup I think that's all, sorry for the lengthy thread. Anyway thanks a million and have a nice day.

Excel Rendering - Merged Columns Etc.

Mar 19, 2007

Hi guys,

i have a client who is dissatisfied with the merged columns and rows produced when SSRS renders to Excel, it prevents them from easily copying and pasting data into another workbook.

Is there going to be any work done in this area of the product in the near future? My understanding is that this 'issue' has been around for quite some time, and shortly after the SSRS2005 RTM release the team were going to look at tidying up the Excel rendering. Can anyone from MS make an official comment on this?

Thanks,

Index Was Out Of Range When Two Cells Are Merged

Jul 10, 2007

I receive this error during rendering when I have two cells merged together:

Error Snippet

Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index

When I "Split Cells" on the offending cells, it starts to work. This report renders without error when run on the RS server. This error only occurs when running the report locally on the "Preview" tab in the report designer.

I have closed the IDE and deleted the *.data files and restarted with the same results. Is there anyway to get more information about the error to help debug the problem?

Thanks!

Merged Record Order Wierdness

Sep 14, 2007

I'm using the Merge transformation to merge two sorted tables on four sort fields.

It all looks OK until several records share some of the same sort fields.

For example if table 1 contains

Zip Code(sort field 1) Cust Name(sf2) Cust Number(sf3) Record type(sf4)
1234 Bob 444 A
1234 Bob 555 A

and table 2 contains

Zip Code Cust Name Cust Number Record type
1234 Bob 444 B
1234 Bob 555 B

then the output order is

Zip Code Cust Name Cust Number Record type
1234 Bob 444 A
1234 Bob 555 A
1234 Bob 444 B
1234 Bob 555 B

and I would have expected

Zip Code Cust Name Cust Number Record type
1234 Bob 444 A
1234 Bob 444 B

1234 Bob 555 A
1234 Bob 555 B

Both input table are explicitly sorted just prior to the merge.

Any ideas?
