Is There A Way To Control How Profiler Plays Back A File

Feb 12, 2003

I have been saving a trace file while entering orders into a new vendor application. I can replay the files just fine and everything works. My question is that I am trapping ten minutes worth of orders that are entered. However when profiler replays the trace it runs through in about a minute. I was trying to get a realistic a load approach as I can, and was wondering if there is a way to conrol how fat profiler runs the file trace. I put in 20 orders during this 10 minutes, in the real world no one could put the 20 orders into the system in a minute. Any ideas (and no,purchasing a real load testing program is not an option)

Web Control For Cluster Profiler/Diagram?

Apr 2, 2007

I know Microsoft has released web controls that replicate some of the functionality found in Management Studio for data mining (decision tree, cluster characteristics / descrimination). I cannot seem to find one for the Cluster Diagram or Cluster Profiler. Does anyone know if this is currently avaliable anywhere? I have determined the calls these built-in viewers are using, but before trying to build something from scratch I wanted to see if anyone has had experience doing this or if there is something already built for it.

Getting Control Back From Xp_cmdshell

Jul 3, 2001

Hi,

I need to run a batch file in xp_cmdshell. The problem is that the batch will start a program that does not get back to c: prompt, and until it does xp_cmdshell does not return control. Is there anyway I can start that problem and get the control back to do other things? I tried using START /SEPARATE command in DOS, but it does not help.

Thanks,
Dmitriy

Having Difficulty Setting Back Up To Back Up File Wihout Datetime Stamp SQL 2K

Apr 24, 2007

Hello,I'm trying to create a simple back up in the SQL Maintenance Plan that willmake a single back up copy of all database every night at 10 pm. I'd likethe previous nights file to be overwritten, so there will be only a singleback up file for each database (tape back up runs every night, so each daysback up will be saved on tape).Every night the maintenance plan makes a back up of all the databases to anew file with a datetime stamp, meaning the previous nights file stillexists. Even when I check "Remove files older than 22 hours" the previousnights file still exists. Is there any way to create a back up file withoutthe date time stamp so it overwrites the previous nights file? Thanks!Rick

Control Flow Diverging Then Converging Back

Jan 3, 2007

I am somewhat new to SSIS and have a question on branching/control flow. We have 3 manufacturing facilities on AS400. Requirement were to create independent SSIS packages in case certain facilities were down, to not interrupt or fail other facilities. to be honest, I didn't want to maintain 3 * (each plant package) packages and decided to create one that takes in a command line parameter and will create seperate batch files (requirements for our archaic scheduling system) that pass in the plant to be processed.

Everything works fine and the packages analyze the passed parameter with no problem and evaluate it when calling stored procedures int a SQL Task. I am required (I think - let me know if I'm wrong here) to have 3 seperate Data Flow tasks depending on which plant is being processed because they are different connections (same server, different DBs - AS400). Which Data Flow Taks run is based on a precedence constraint that analyzes the passed in plant number.

After the Data Flow Tasks are complete, I'd like to merge back into one path again (even though1 out of N will only run at a time) because they are all simply stored proc calls with different parameters. It seemed silly to me to have the same tasks repeated 3 different times. I looked into started up tasks after events, but I don't know a lot about it and it seems as though I would still be maintaining 3 different paths anyway.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

P.S. (Even if the sollution is to have 1 Data Flow Task I'm still interested in knowing how to converge paths back together)

SQL Tools :: Cannot Save Server Profiler Trace File

Dec 9, 2011

This is for SQL Server 2005 SP4 Build 5266. We have been having performance issues in production. There are tight deadlines to be met and it is important that they are solved promptly.

Yesterday we replicated the situation in the acceptance testing environment. The jobs take 8 hours to run and we started at 2:00 PM.

Just before the jobs ran I set up an SQL Server Profiler trace to catch processes with a duration of longer then 12 seconds. I set it to save the results to a database table.

Last night I checked the table at 5:00 PM and there were entries in the table. However, I could be mistaken.

At 9:00 PM I checked the table and it was empty.

This morning I arrived at work and checked SQL Server Profiler. The trace was running and within SQL Server Profiler, there are 100s of results. I stopped the trace. However, checking the table, it is empty.

I thought I would be able to save the trace results to a file. When I chose "Save As" from the file menu, all the options are greyed out (trace file, trace template, trace table, etc).

The results are there but there is no way of saving them and no way of exporting them. How could this have happened?

Is there a location, where SQL Server Profiler saves the results in a temporary space. I may be able to open them and retrieve them. How can I save the results? Why are all my options greyed out?

Back Everything Up In A Single File?

Jul 20, 2005

Greetings,Our former SQL Server 2000 DBA backed up everything in a single diskfile. By everything I mean, full backup, differential backup andtransaction logs. See below for details of how the backup is currentlyset up. When I did 'view contents' of DBBackup, I saw it contained themixture of log, full and diff backups of verious dates. She has quit.Other coworkers said (in a not-sure tone) she was able to restore thedatabases from such a single file, although nobody ever saw or knew howshe did recovery. My knowledge about SQL Server, especially regardingits backup/restore is limited. But I've ever worked with otherdatabases, e.g. Oracle, MySQL and Postgres. I think log backups, fullbackups and differential backups should be completely separated. Also,in each type of backups, each database should have its own backup file. Please advise.=====Log backup:CREATE PROCEDURE sp_lbackup ASBackup log AGEP To DBBackupBackup log careerfairs To DBBackupBackup log CoEdocuments To DBBackupBackup log committee To DBBackupBackup log conference To DBBackupGOFull backup:CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.sp_fullbackup ASBackup database AGEP To DBBackup WITH INITBackup database CoEdocuments To DBBackupBackup database careerfairs To DBBackupBackup database committee To DBBackupBackup database conference To DBBackupGODiff backup:CREATE PROCEDURE sp_diffbackup ASBackup database AGEP To DBBackup with differentialBackup database careerfairs To DBBackup with differentialBackup database CoEdocuments To DBBackup with differentialBackup database committee To DBBackup with differentialBackup database conference To DBBackup with differentialGO=====Thanks in advance for any help,Bing

How To Verify The Integrity Of A Back-up File Prior To Restore?

Mar 22, 2007

Hello,

I have some C# (.NET 2.0) code that performs back-ups and also can perform restores of back-up files. I would like to validate the integrity of a file prior to initiating a restore operation. In other words, I want to know, before I try to restore, if the file is just a random file (picture, work doc, zipped backup, etc.) or if it is a valid SQL backup file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I take regular transaction log backups so the log file is well under under without any issue. This DB's recovery model is set to FULL as it has to be mirrored to a backup site.  Any recommendations on how to control the growth. - Is it advisable to take create a new DB with data older than 2 years and transfer that file to an external drive and if i do this, can i "attach" it back to the main server if and when required ?

How To Control Error Log File In SQL Server 2005 Express?

Dec 30, 2007

I attached a SQL database called Cars, using the following code:

Code Block

IF NOT EXISTS(
SELECT *
FROM sys.databases
WHERE name = N'Cars'
)
CREATE DATABASE Cars
ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:DataServer FilesCars.mdf')
FOR ATTACH
GO

I then detached the database using:

Code Block

EXEC sp_detach_db @dbname = 'Cars'
,@skipchecks = 'true'
,@KeepFulltextIndexFile = 'true'
GO

I then copied the .mdf and .ldf to another folder, using Windows Explorer.

I then attached the database using the new folder name in my code.:

Code Block

IF NOT EXISTS(
SELECT *
FROM sys.databases
WHERE name = N'Cars'
)
CREATE DATABASE Cars
ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:DataNew FolderCars.mdf')
FOR ATTACH
GO

Now when I go to update my table, I see that I am hitting the .mdf in the new folder.

And, when I do my table updates, I see that I am hitting the .ldf in the old folder.

Two questions:
1. What did I do wrong, that updates are hitting the new .mdf, but the old .ldf?
2. How do I control what .ldf SQL Express uses?

I see references to 'SQL Server Agent' in the help pages, but do not see 'SQL Server Agent' within the application.

I see the reference to the old folder path, within the 'Database Properties Files page', but no possibity to edit the value.

WMI File Watcher In Control Flow Issues Quota Violation Error

May 22, 2008

My SSIS control flow includes a standard "textbook" WMI Event Watcher Task that monitors a folder for incoming files. Generally it works fine, but now I regularly see the error message:

"Watching for the Wql Query caused the following system exception: "Quota Violation." Check the query for errors or WMI connection for access rights/permissions"

I do not see any indication of trouble in the event logs. The SSIS log simply states that it failed.

Is there any magic about WMI Event Watcher?

When I restart, it runs fine for hours.

SQL05 is 9.0.3054 on W2003 with all microsoft updates applied. It is basically a bare machine with SQL Server, SSIS running and a service that kicks in occasionally.

Thanks for reading!

SQL Server 2012 :: View To Concatenate File / Path Names Back To Root Directory?

Sep 25, 2014

We have a hierarchical table of some 2-3k of rows that grows slowly at only 3-5 rows a month, and is never likely to be above 5k, holding file/directory names with an IdParent int value pointing at that items immediate parent or NULL if root

Below is a sample:

Id Name IdParent
1 C: NULL
2 D: NULL
3 ProgramFiles 1
4 DataFiles 2
5 Excel.EXE 3
6 MyDataList.CSV 4

iterative code required to achieve the result I am looking for is best handled in the Application layer, but in this case the design brief is that we must get our results back as a View. Speed of execution and code clarity are secondary 'icing on the cake' issues.

I have tried recursive CTE's and XML FOR solutions but without success, and while I feel the latter is probably the best all rounder the searches I have made and the examples I have read do not seem to solve this particular issue.

Even to find the starting point of the search tree (i.e. the .EXE and the .CSV items) was difficult because the final slash is optional in some of the rows (.e. row 4)

The end result of my view on the above data should return:

Id FilePath
5 C:ProgramFilesExcel.EXE
6 D:DataFilesMyDataList.CSV (note the adding of the missing delimiter between DataFiles and MyDataList)

Move Report File From Reporting Server Back To Local Visual Studio Project

Apr 4, 2008

I am not sure if this is possible or not, but I have to at least ask.

I have a SQL Reporting Services project that has a QA server version and then a Production server version. So when requested changes are made to the reports, I make the changes in Visual Studio and then push to QA. After the changes have been tested and approved, I then push the changes to the Production server.

I have come across an issue, where requested changes were made in Visual Studio (a lot of changes), and pushed to QA. The users now have changed their minds and they want instead to stay with what is in production. So, I am looking for a way to recover the report file on the production web server, bring it back into my visual studio project to replace the report that I had changed.

Is this possible, or will I have to start over and step one and reverse the changes in Visual Studio.

Let me know.

Thank you,

T.J.
