Is There A Way To View Stored Procedure, Trigger AndFunction Usage In SQL Server?
Oct 11, 2006
I am maintaining an application where most of the business rules are in
Triggers, Stored Procedures and User Defined Functions. When a bug
arises, it can get very tedious to debug. Today for example, I wanted
to modify a function that was being called by a trigger. The problem
is that I don't want to change the function, for fear that it is being
called by one of the other SP's or triggers in the database (there are
hundreds of them)
Essentially, I need a tool that allows me to view where functions and
sp's are being referenced from. At the very least, I'd like to perform
a "full text search" in the database objects, so that let's say I have
a function named "fn_doSomething", I can search the schema for this
string and get all the places where it appears.
As you can see, I'm in the dark here. I've never worked on a system
where all business rules are at the database level. If you know of a
tool that does what I describe above, or anything else that would
facilitate my life, please let me know!
I have writen a Function which call's the same function it self. I'm getting the error as below.
Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32). Can any one give me a solution for this problem I have attached the function also.
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.GetLegsFor(@IncludeParent bit, @EmployeeID float) RETURNS @retFindReports TABLE (EmployeeID float, Name nvarchar(255), BossID float) AS BEGIN IF (@IncludeParent=1) BEGIN INSERT INTO @retFindReports SELECT MemberId,Name,referredby FROM Amemberinfo WHERE Memberid=@EmployeeID END DECLARE @Report_ID float, @Report_Name nvarchar(255), @Report_BossID float DECLARE RetrieveReports CURSOR STATIC LOCAL FOR SELECT MemberId,Name,referredby FROM Amemberinfo WHERE referredby=@EmployeeID OPEN RetrieveReports FETCH NEXT FROM RetrieveReports INTO @Report_ID, @Report_Name, @Report_BossID WHILE (@@FETCH_STATUS = 0) BEGIN INSERT INTO @retFindReports SELECT * FROM dbo.GetLegsFor(0,@Report_ID) INSERT INTO @retFindReports VALUES(@Report_ID,@Report_Name, @Report_BossID) FETCH NEXT FROM RetrieveReports INTO @Report_ID, @Report_Name, @Report_BossID END CLOSE RetrieveReports DEALLOCATE RetrieveReports
I am running this query "delete from ims_domains where id=61" and got the error Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32)
Please let me know what should be the reason? Thanks, Ravi
I face this error when i try to run my store procedure. The sample of store procedure as following:
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO
CREATE PROCEDURE sp_addUserAccess with encryption AS SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @COUNTER INT SET @COUNTER = 0
DECLARE @i_compId INT BEGIN DECLARE C1 SCROLL CURSOR FOR SELECT i_compId FROM ltd_cms_company WHERE (i_owner = 176 or i_owner = 268) AND ti_recStatus = 1 END

Hi all, I get this message when trying to update a tabel i have whichhas nested hierarchies.The current hierarchies beginning from root = 1 are up to the level 5.Before going into details and sample data with all the sql queries andprocedures, this limitation from Microsoft for nested levels .. isthere any way or trick to increase the level in generic?
I have created a delete trigger in Table1 and Table2. Once I delete a certain record in Table1 it will also delete that record in Table2 or vice versa. But once i delete certain record either in Table1 or Table2 it will create an error "Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32).". Can you help me on this?
I have around 100 packages (all [packages run at same time) each package calls a stored Procedure once the Stored proc Execution is completed the package will write the log information into a log table, here how can i capture the CPU and Memory usage for execution of each stored proc.
hi, Can someone tell me when to use SQL Server View as oppose to Stored Porcedure? Currently we do everything with SQL Server stored procedure. I mean, even if we have to display some report, we use Stored Procedure. In what situations and senarios views are better and one should consider them over Stored Procedure?
I need to create either a trigger or stored procedure in SQL server 2005(hopefully someone can tell me).. Here is what I need to happen: I have a table with orders that are generated from a website. After the transaction is completed, I need have the record that was just created also copy to another table. There is a field called flag and the values in this field are either 1 or 2. Imediatly after the transaction occurs, I need the records where flag = 1 to copy to this other table. How would I go about doing this?
Hi,what I am trying to discern is if there is any way of logging SPactivity on a SQL server 2k DB. Ideally I would want to log SP name,parameters, user and time.I found sp_monitor in MSDN but that just gives overall statistics.Not specific enough to aid debugging.Thanks in advance,Finlay Macrae
What is the syntax for creating a update trigger and passing the values which were updated to a stored procedure on a linked server?? Specifically need syntax for updated value, as well as the syntax for executing the stored proc on the linked server.
I created a query, which makes use of a temp table, and I need the results to be displayed in a View. Unfortunately, Views do not support temp tables, as far as I know, so I put my code in a stored procedure, with the hope I could call it from a View....
Hello, i have a problem regarding stored procedures and view server state.
I have an application with a lot of stored procedures, one of them checks data of the connected users. In SQL 2000 i had no problem getting this information, but in SQL server 2005 i do.
my stored procedure looks like this:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dba].[applsp_GetConnectionInfo]
(
@DBName varchar(100)
)
WITH EXECUTE AS OWNER AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @sCollationMaster VARCHAR(128);
DECLARE @sSqlString VARCHAR(900);
-- Determine collation from master database because collation from master and ultimo database may differ
SELECT @sCollationMaster = CAST(databasepropertyex('master', 'Collation') AS VARCHAR);
SET @sSqlString =
'SELECT max(status) AS Status, max(isnull(SCISUSENAME, ''ULTIMOLOGIN'')) AS Login
, MAX(Rtrim(Rtrim(convert(varchar(255), nt_domain)) + nt_username)) AS NTUser
, max(Rtrim(hostname)) AS Host, MAX(Rtrim(program_name)) AS Program
FROM master.dbo.sysprocesses JOIN dba.SCONNECTIONINFO on SCISPID = CAST(spid AS VARCHAR)
AND ( SCISUSENAME = ISNULL(loginame, '''') COLLATE ' + @sCollationMaster + ' OR ISNULL(loginame, '''') = ''ULTIMOLOGIN'')
WHERE ...... AND DB_NAME(dbid) = ''' + @DBName + '''
GROUP BY hostprocess
ORDER BY Login
';
EXEC(@sSqlString);
END
I've granted view server state permissions to my user 'dba' which is the db_owner. When i execute the query in the stored procedure seperatly as dba i get all the info i need, but when i execute the stored procedure i don't see anything.
I seem to have the same problem with sp_who2 Executing it gives me information about everyone but when i put in a stored procedure like this:
I am looking to created a trigger that inserts records into a log table to show the stored porcedure that has updated a specific column to a specific value in a specific table
At present I have:
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[trUpdaterTable] ON [dbo].[t_account]-- A DB level trigger FOR UPDATE --Event we want to capture AS IF update (document_status)
[Code] ...
However this doesn't appear to bring back the procedure that triggered the update...
The value the trigger should update on is document_status = 0
The developers in our shop have a need to explicitly grant view definition permissions to themselves on stored procedures they create in their development databases. They have dbo level permissions in these databases and although they can explicitly grant view definition permissions to other developers in the same database, they are unable to do so for themselves. When they attempt this, it appears that they are successful but when they check the stored procedure afterwards the permission is not there for themselves.
While this does not cause an issue in development, the intention is for these view definition permissions to be carried forward to the test and production databases where they only have datareader permissions.
When these stored procedures are scripted out by the dba to move to Test and Production the view definition permissions are not scripted out for the developer in question.
Is there a way that a developer with dbo rights in a database can explicitly grant themselves view definition permissions on a stored procedure they create as dbo?
I'm modifying a pretty big web application and the programmer who built it used all stored procedures and no views. Does anyone know why someone would do this? I realize that you can't pass parameters with views and insert/update/delete records with views, but he even used stored procedures for queries like: SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE myVal > 0 ORDER BY myVal Is it more efficient to put this in a stored procedure compared a view?
Are there performace benefits to using a select from a View instead of a stored procedure that returns the same dataset? I am concerned about when we ramp up to 100's of users.
I like the security of using stored procedures. It seems I am able to do anything with it that I can with a view. Why would I choose a view over a sproc?
Hello all I am not quite a beginner but not an expert at SQL. I'm kind of in a bind and need some help. I have a table that shows me statuses of tickets (open, pending, closed), some tickets could have as much as 25 rows/ticket. I want to try to avoid that but at the same time keep track of the time. Here's what I need to happen...
with the data example below I need to take the ((closed date - first open date) - total of Waiting time). This will give me total time duration of the ticket. I'd like to either write a stored procedure or create a view that would do this for me. Any one have ideas?
Hi all, I want to know if there is a way to use a stored procedure in a view OR a table value function OR use the store procedure in table value function.
If any of these is a possibility, it would help. So far i have learnt that extended stored procedures can be accessed in table value functions.

HiThis problem involves 2 columns in my Product table - ReleaseDate(varchar) and ReleaseClass(varchar)When a new product is Entered, the current date is inserted into ReleaseDate & ReleaseClass = NewWhen product is a month old, I want ReleaseClass to = RecentWhen product is a month 3 mths old, I want ReleaseClass to = NormalWhen the product is a month old, is there a method to automatically run a Stored procedure say to change the ReleaseClass field??any code or links on how i go about this would be appreciated + i've never used a triggerCheers!!
Hi, Please help me to find this answer. We know Trigger are a type of stored procedure,and can be activated whether by a insert ,update or delete event of a table. We also know that stored procedure are quick due to their execution plan which are already stored in the memory once complied. But what about triggers? what is the mechanism of triggers?How they work? And how fast they are from Tsql queries?Is there any mechanism to calculate or measure the efficiency of triggers? Please comment if anybody knows the answers. Thanks!! Joydeep
Hi guys I have a stored procedure that a make crosstab table , In this table the main column is "job titles" these jobs must be ordered in certain way , for example "1st managers then engineers … workers … " so In the table that job titles are defined there is also a column named "Ranking" so the" job titles" could be sorted appropriately by ranking order . The problem is I cannot have the "Ranking" column with my crosstab table so I need to load it in a view or something like that. Any Idea?
Hi i have a page in which a user fills out info on a page, the problem i am getting is that when the save button is clicked all text box values apart from one are saving to the database this field is the "constructor_ID" field. The save button performs a stored procedure, however there is a view which is doing something as well, would it be possible to write a stored procedure which would update the view at the same time? Is it possible to drop and then create a view from a stored procedure? Like the way you can drop and create a temp table. I want to create a view of the fields in a table something like: But I cannot include the field names, they may be changed by an admin user. If exists view 'custom_fields" drop view 'custom_fields' Create view custom_fields Select * From tblCustomFields And make this a view in the db named custom_fields. And I want to call it from a button click in my UI.
I need to create a view using a stored procedure .
The task is to Upload multiple sql server tables sourcing data from flat files as well as SQL server tables .It is the process of Data migration. After loading few tables,I need to create a view on thoes tables which can be used (queried )to load furthe tables.
I need to AUTOMATE THIS PROCESS .Means Once I schedule the job .It should take fire the stored procedures one after another . I am thinking to create a view though a stored procedure . You can suggest me alternate ways to do same .
SELECT field1 FROM DBName.dbo.TableName with a "VIEW" in this other database (that's on the same server)?
Also, in my sp, I have the following:
SELECT DISTINCT Store.[DemoID#], Progstats.ProgramName, Progstats.[Program#], ZCHAIN.STR_NAME, ZCHAIN.[STR#], ZCHAIN.ADDRESS, ZCHAIN.City, ZCHAIN.ST, ZCHAIN.ZIP, ZCHAIN.[PHONE#], Store.D1, Store.Status, Store.AgencyCompleted, Store.Reason, Store.LeadName, Store.DemonstratorName, Store.UpdatedOnline FROM (Store INNER JOIN Progstats ON Store.[Program#] = Progstats.[Program#]) INNER JOIN ZCHAIN ON Store.[TD#] = ZCHAIN.[ID#] WHERE (((Store.[DemoID#])=@DemoID)) AND Progstats.Status=1; GO
ZCHAIN has now become this "VIEWZCHAIN" in this other database. So, could I simply relace "ZCHAIN" with "DB2.dbo.VIEWZCHAIN.STR_NAME" which is actually now a 4-part name?
