Is there a way to encrypt one column of data in a table in SQL Server 2000? Thanks!

I've looked through msdn and found an example, but it doesn't work. The problem is that when i use such construction
ResultSet rs1 = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT TOP 1 * FROM sys.check_constraints");
rs1.next();
Reader reader = rs1.getCharacterStream(17);
reader is set to null,but it mustn't be null cause i see some data through management studio in 17th column of sys.check_constraints table.
Does some know of an easy to understand way to encrypt a single table column? I have never worked with encryption before.

Can I accomplish encrypting a column with a trigger similar to below, but without the 'SSN' column?
I added the SSN column just so I could pass an UNencrypted value. Seems round-about & clunky.
This works:
Insert into TestSSNs(UserID, SSN, Name) VALUES (NEWID(), '890-12-0007', 'Gina')
---------------------------------------------
CREATE TABLE TestSSNs (
UserIDuniqueidentifier,
SSNVarchar(11) , --plain text, should always be null
eSSN VarBinary(128), --encrypted value
[Name]Varchar(50)
);
CREATE TRIGGER dbo.IU_TestSSNs ON dbo.TestSSNs
[code]....
We have to encrypt one of the SQL Server column data at the database level, we don’t want to modify the application programs, because we use ERP application and we don’t want to reapply our customization very few months, so we are looking for an option  to encrypt and decrypt the column level data value using trigger/procedure/function,  I used instead of trigger on that table to encrypt and decrypt the values but it is not working, we want only one user(Application Service account) have an ability to encrypt and decrypt the data, not for any other id.. I read somewhere we cannot automatically encrypt/decrypt the column value using trigger, is that true...
View 5 Replies View RelatedSomewhere i read..that in SQL Server...usage of Built-in Functions on Columns, makes query optimizer to ignore indexes on that column...!
So lets say we have table EMP with Emp_id and Emp_Name....
Also we have Non-Clustered index on Emp_Name.
So following query would NOT use Non-Clustered index on Emp_Name column.
SELECTLEFT(emp_name, 3) as emp3
FROMdbo.EMP
Is this true? i am using SQL Server 2008.
We have developed a mostly-disconnected smart client app written in C# that uses MSDE as a local backing store. With the announcement of SS Ev, we attempted a port of our app over to SS Ev. The port went smoothly, however, the performance has been significantly (very significantly) degraded. Before we being our investigation into the cause of the performance degradation, I thought I might see if anyone has suggestions on where we should look for possible performance issues. Any suggestions?
View 1 Replies View RelatedOk, a while back, probably a year or so I started moving to MSDE. At the time a read posts on the Web that said you could use the client tools from the SQL Server Eval to manage MSDE. Great! I thought.
But more recently I get the impression that using those tools in not allowed. Can someone give me a diffinative answer.
I really want to stick with MSDE and am having a hard time convincing the boss to shell out $9,000+ for SQL Server on my dual processor web server. But I need DTS, Job Scheduling, etc...
Now my boss has wind of MySQL and knows that it's CHEAP.
If I can legally use the client tools with MSDE than I'm fine, if not I dread going to MySQL.
Your Advice is appreciated.

Greetings,
I think these should be rather simple questions, yet I spent a number of hours last night digging through the forums here and msdn and couldn't find any satisfactory answers. Basically, there tend to be types of information that are commonly saved in most databases, like names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc...and there are a variety of built in data types in SQL Server. What are the best built in datatypes for some of the common entries in a sql database. Also, there are a number of character based types and I am curious why one would be more useful in certain situations than another. Why is there char( ), nchar( ), varchar( ), nvarchar( ) and text datatypes? Why so many? Also, what is the "text" datatype and when is it most likely to be used? There is very little about the text type that I can find in the msdn or SQL Server docs...aside from the fact that it's text. On top of all this, there's numerous binary types as well. I'm really not getting the reason behind all these different basic types and why I would want to use one over the other in any specific instance.
TIA,
Mark

Hi,
I am currently developing a real estate style website and i want to integrate a detailed search facility for customers...
I'm after general advice on the best ways to do this.
All in all, there will be around 8 different filters to search. I want the user to be able to pick any number of filters and for the results to come back in a reasonable time.
My method so far is to firstly store all the search terms in the query string so that a customer can save the results if needed. My main problem is how best to run the query in SQL Server.
For example, if the user wants filtering on a,b,c and d.... do i create 4 seperate IF @a IS NOT NULL BEGIN style transactions? This could get very messy and long with 8 filters, in theory i'd have to write 64 different IF BEGIN statements which is not practical or good for performance!
Any advice or examples would be very gratefully received
Hi,I have a .net application and i added a code that encrypts data saved in database. However, there is already data in the fields that was entered before this change.I know need to check if the values in those fields are encrypted and if not i need to encrypt them.How can I perform such a check and update the relevant data?I use TrippleDES in .net to encrypt/decrypt the data.Thanks
View 1 Replies View RelatedDoes SQL Server 2000 provide any data encryption/decryption functionality so that certain fields (e.g. SSN, Age and Salary) will be encrypted before writing into the table and decrypted once loading out of the table?

We like to secure datas.
Only a few people are autorized to read this information, but today, these informations are readable with a simple query with a query analyzer for exemple.
I'd like to encrypt datas with reversible function in one field of a table
Is there a function able to do this kind of work in SQLServer V7 or 2000 ?
Hi,
I want to encrypt certain data like password, ssn, credit card info etc before saving in database. Also, this encrypted data can be queried using standard SQL statements like:
select * from users where userid=454 and password = 'encrypted data'
The mechanism to encrypt data could be in a .net application. The code that does encryption/decryption should also be protected so that it doesnt work if it falls in wrong hands.
Can anyone suggest what would be the best way to accomplish above?
thanks,

I am pushing data to a hosted facility and I can successfully push it from BIDS but the package fails login failure when scheduled as a job. I am not sure what to use on package protection level since this data is being pushed over the internet and If I encrypt all the data with a password it will be decrypted on the hosting facility.

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"
„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')
and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks
I am trying to insert data in a table using a stored procedure, but somehow I cannot store the values passed by the stored procedure in the table.
Table has two fields FIRST_NAME, LAST_NAME with varbinary data type(I need to encrypt the data)
My stored procedure is as follows. Please let me know what i am doing wrong!
***************************************************************
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[SP_InsertInfo]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@FIRST_NAME varBINARY(100)
,@LAST_NAME varBINARY(100)
AS
OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY key DECRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE cert
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
-- Insert statements for procedure here
Insert into [dbo].[INFO] (FIRST_NAME, LAST_NAME)
Values ( encryptbykey( key_guid('key'),'@FIRST_NAME'),
encryptbykey( key_guid('key'),'@LAST_NAME')
)
close SYMMETRIC KEY key
END
**********************************************
EXEC sp_InsertInfo 'larry', 'Smith'
when I run the SP, the data stored in the first_name, last_name fields are @FIRST_NAME', @LAST_NAME' instead of larry, smith respectively.
Thanks
Apparently you cannot go backwards. Once 2005 Express is installed, even removing it does not allow you to setup MSDE 2000 again. So there is no "trying it out" option.
Unfortunately, our software does not use 2005 Express. I tried it out, and now have a useless testing workstation that can't have MSDE 2000 installed again.
Any ideas on how to break the chain here are welcome.
Hi, all experts here,
Thank you for your kind attention.
Could please any of you give me some advices for if there are tutorials and demos avaiable which cover all the SQL Server 2005 data mining built-in algorithms?
That will be great to hear from any of you shortly. Thanks a lot in advance.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,
Hopefully this makes sense, not sure what to even begin researching...
I'm trying to optimize all facets of this process, as it will take over the resources on my server if not done efficiently.
I have CSV files containing INTs that I need to upsert (match to an existing/earlier imported array or create a new record set) millions of times a day. To be clear, this data is a small subset of the actual import, this arrays contents are not the main data of the process, and the value of the entire array is meant to be related to higher level tables.
The contents of the CSV array are 99.9+% repeating, meaning they will very often share the exact same contents as a a previously imported array. A rough guess is there are 20k combinations existing, and less than 1k new per month, and will range from 6 cols x 15 rows to 6 cols x 50 rows.
So current plan is to use a MD5 hash during the (not SQL related) export process to identify the contents of this CSV file, and export only the md5 (32 digit hex) as a lookup to identify the contents. If the SQL import process finds a new (unknown) MD5 it will request the actual contents, otherwise it will simply use the MD5 as a key/id/code for the actual array contents that are already stored.
There's probably a certain terminology I'm not familiar with for this type of thing.. I've never heard of something like this. I realize collision is a threat, but I'm unsure how much I should be worried about it with this type of data (similar size/contents, but a relatively small amount of possibilities). I think up to even 0.1% collision would be acceptable which is probably way more than enough.
Does this sound like a bad idea to anyone? Are there certain hash functions I should use for this type of thing? Anyone have suggestions of where to look next?
Thanks!
