Issue: How To Convert A Database Field From Varchar To Datetime..?
Jul 22, 2005
Can anyone help me on this!I've got more than a 1000 records in a SQL server database. The problem is that the the date field is set to varchar, and that gives a lot of trouble. (for example by sorting a table, it's a mess)How can i make sure that i will have a table with the date field set to datettime en that those 1000 records still will be in it. thanks in advance!
Hi: I have a column call Date_Sent (28/02/2004)(dd/mm/yyyy) format as varchar at beginning. I want to convert to other column as datetime. I use Query like: SELECT CAST(SUBSTRING(Date_Sent,1,2)as int) + '/' +CAST(SUBSTRING(date_sent,4,2) as int) + '/' +CAST(SUBSTRING(DATE_SENT,7,4) as int) From MyTable It is not working, anybody can give me some advise! thanks!
hi, How do i convert a varchar field into the datetime data type? the reason i need this lies in the requirement that in the earlier data base the column that is hlding the date value is having the data type as varchar. and in the new design the column data type is datetime. i am using sql scripts for the data migration from the older design to the newer and got stuck with this datetime convertion issue. do let me know the best possible solution.
following are the sample data that is theer in the older table for the date.
12/12/2003 1/13/2007 01132004 1-1-2004 1.2.2001
there is no uniformity of the data that is stored currently.
I have a table with a column that is currently a varchar(50), but I want to convert it into an int. When I try to just change the type in design mode I get an error that conversion cannot proceed. When I look at the field it appears some of the entries have special characters appended at the end, I see a box after the value.
How can I remove all speical characters and then convert that field to an int?
Also I tried the following query which did not work as well, same error about conversion.
Hi, I have a varchar field named FinancialYTDCode containing data in the format 2007F or 2008F. I want to only select the rows with the FinancialYTDCode that is the same as the current year.
Could someone please show me how I write this in my script. Thanks
how i convert varchar sal field to numeric in query select sum(sal) from emp1 error:the sum or average aggregate operation cannot take a varchar data type as an argument.
I need to handle this conversion in SSIS and not on oracle.
The following expression is executed on a datatype of dt_str with a length of 8000.
SUBSTRING((DT_STR,8000,1252)Column_name,1,8000)
Records longer then 4000 bytes take an error path
The next expression with 4000 bytes works but there is truncation.
SUBSTRING((DT_STR,4000,1252)Column_name,1,4000)
Basically I need to know how to cast a text or ntext into a varchar or nvarchar using ssis but I need to capture the first 8000 byes without truncation.
is this possible?
Using SSIS Reading From oracle I can convert to a text or ntext field but I am having a hard time going directly to a varchar.
I'm not entirely sure that this is the correct forum for this question but it relates to my SSIS package.
I am currently implementing an SSIS package to replace an existing stored procedure which is getting very unmanageable. I have come across a part in the stored procedure which performs a convert(datetime, @Parameter3, 14) on a string of data. The string value of @Parameter3 is in the following format HH:mm:ss.
The problem i am having is how to implement similar functionality in a script task. everything i have tried involving the datetime object returns 1,1,0001, 00:00:00 or similar. It never seems to get the time so that it can be passed to a datetime field in the database.
I am getting a date string that is contained in a character field (char(20)).
An example of the data is as follows:
2005-09-20121315001
it is in the format YYYY-MM-DDHHMMSSMMM.
I want to insert this value into a datetime field. I have used convert, but can only insert it when I split out the time portion and separate them with a colon
i.e. to get it to insert into a datetime field the data has to be in the following format
2005-09-20 13:15:18.001
YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.MMM
Is there a style parameter in the convert function that will allow me to insert this value without having to separate the hours/minutes/seconds with a colon? I have tried BOL but it seems that all the examples have colons in them where there is a time portion to the date,
So as the subject says, I have a few fields that are nvarchar but hold date information. Most of these fields I have been able to move to datetime easiliy enough, simply by going into edit mode for the table and converting the fields to datetime. But 1 field is giving me problems I keep getting this error. quote:- Unable to modify table. Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime. The statement has been terminated.
I really dont know why I'm getting this error, but I"m assuming it may have to be something like one of the records may not be in date format. But I don't know if this is the case and I don't know how to locate where my problem is coming from. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to convert a column in my source table of datatype varchar(6) to a column of datatype int in my destination. I tried using the Derived Column/Data Conversion transformations but none of them worked. So, I tried using the following C# (credits to the original poster) and getting an error during compilation.
Note: "MyCol" is the Input Column I've specified in the Script Component and "CleanCol" is the Output column I've specified as datatype [DT_I4].
public override void Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row) { int colOut = 0; if (!Int32.TryParse(Row.MyCol, out colOut)) { Row.CleanCol_IsNull = true; } else { Row.CleanCol = colOut; } }
The best overloaded method match for 'int.TryParse(string, out int)' has some invalid arguments
The other expression I've tried was:
ISNULL(MyCol) ? (dt_i4)"" : (dt_i4)MyCol
From the above code, you might have understood that the source field has some blank records as well in the MyCol field.
What is the best possible way to do the conversion from a String to Int or fixing the error from the above.
Hi all, having a little problem with saving dates to sql databaseI've got the CreatedOn field in the table set to datetime type, but every time i try and run it i get an error kicked up Error "The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value. The statement has been terminated."I've tried researching it but not been able to find something similar. Heres the code: DateTime createOn = DateTime. Now;string sSQLStatement = "INSERT INTO Index (Name, Description, Creator,CreatedOn) values ('" + name + "','" + description + "','" + userName + "','" + createOn + "')"; Any help would be much appreciated
I need to convert all datetime columns to smalldatetime in the whole database. I really don't want to do it by hand and It would probably take me a whole day to figure out how to write such a procedure. If someone could help me out that would be great. My database is divided into schemas just like AdventureWorks. Also, no need to worry about date conversion, value could be set to current date.
We want to add a default date to our database tables. Looking at other database samples people use all sorts of dates to add as default date e.g. 1/1/1997 or the getdate() function. Is it good practice to set a default date and what should the default date be???? Newbie
I have some database tables, and each one of them have a creation_date and modified_date in them. I was trying to figure out a way where when a row in one of these tables is changed using Enterprise Manager (Database -> Tables -> select table -> right click -> select all rows -> change a field in a row inside a table), is there a way apart from triggers, such that the "modified_date" column for that row get changed to 'getdate()' (rather picks up the current datetime).
Hi, Assume I have a table name "myTime". This table is simply only have 1 (one) DATETIME field "MyTestTime" (also serve as a primary number).Table MyTime- MyTestTime : SQLTYPE DATETIMETo insert a new row into this field, I simply wrote :SqlCommand sqlCommand = new SqlCommand("insert into MyTime values('2006-01-09')", sqlConnection); I got the value of "2006-01-09" from a textbox or other relevan control.I realize when I try to use "SELECT * FROM MyTime" statement, MSSQL server 2000 automatically convert my date value from "2006-01-09" to "01/09/2006" (from YYYY-MM-DD to MM/DD/YYYY). I don't know why this one must be converted to MM/DD/YYYY automatically (I believe this behavior is depend on some "setting option" in my MSSQL server - but I don't know which one). The challenge is :In my country, the actual date format is like German Date format (DD-MM-YYY). Well I know this is only "Customization" problem. But how insert datetime value given from sql query to a datetime variable?// Connect to database, make a query, get the datareader result, and bla bla blaDateTime aDateTime = new DateTime;aDateTime = Convert.ToDateTime(myDataReader["PostDate"].ToString());// close connectionMy question isHow can I make sure that aDateTime's day is 09 not 01. How my program know that 09 is day not month. I can't use string.split() method because it's possible that my database setting will change from "mm-dd-yyyy" to "dd-mm-yyyy"thanks
I am inserting date and time data into a SQL Server 2012 Express table from an application. The application is providing the date and time as a string data type. Is there a TSQL way to convert the date and time string to an SQL datetime date type? I want to do the conversion, because SQL displays an error due to the
My date and time string from the application looks like : 3/11/2014 12:57:57 PM
Hi,I have a text file that contains a date column. The text file will beimported to database in SQL 2000 server. After to be imported, I wantto convert the date column to date type. For ex. the text file look likeName dateSmith 20003112Jennifer 19991506It would be converted date column to ydm database in SQL 2000 server. In the table it should look like thisName DateSmith 2000.31.12Jennifer 1999.15.06Thanks in advance- Loi -
I need to pass in null/blank value in the date field or declare the field as string and convert date back to string.
I tried the 2nd option but I am having trouble converting the two digits of the recordset (rs_get_msp_info(2), 1, 2))) into a four digit yr. But it will only the yr in two digits. The mfg_start_date is delcared as a string variable
option 1 I will have to declare the mfg_start_date as date but I need to send in a blank value for this variable in the stored procedure. It won't accept a null or blank value.
