Issue With Getting Values From Child Controls In A Gridview, To Use For The Update Using A SQLDataSource Control

Nov 21, 2006

Hi all,

I have a gridview bound with a SQLDataSource. I am using the Update feature of the SQLDataSource to update a SQL Server database with values entered into the gridview. However I am not getting it to work. I believe this is due to the controls that contain the user entries are not the gridview itself, but rather child controls within the gridview. I have been using the names of the actual controls but nothing happens. Upon submit, the screen returns blank, and the database is not updated. Here is some code:

<asp:GridView ID="GridEditSettlement" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" BackColor="Navy"

BorderColor="IndianRed" BorderStyle="Solid" Font-Names="Verdana" Font-Size="X-Small" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource_grid" AllowPaging="True" AllowSorting="True" ForeColor="White" DataKeyNames="legid">

<Columns>

<asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True" CancelImageUrl="~/App_Graphics/quit.gif" CancelText="" EditImageUrl="~/App_Graphics/EditGrid.GIF" EditText="" UpdateImageUrl="~/App_Graphics/save.gif" UpdateText="" ButtonType="Image" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="StartDate" HeaderText="Start Date" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="EndDate" HeaderText="End Date" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="CounterpartDealRef" HeaderText="CP Deal Ref" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Preliminary Settlement Price" ><ItemTemplate>

<asp:Label ID=lblPreliminary runat=server Text='<%# Bind("PrimarySettlementPrice") %>' />

</ItemTemplate>

<EditItemTemplate>

<asp:TextBox runat="server" ID=txtPrimaryPrice Text='<%# Bind("PrimarySettlementPrice") %>'></asp:TextBox>

</EditItemTemplate></asp:TemplateField>

<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Agreed Settlement Price"><ItemTemplate>

<asp:Label ID=lblAgreed runat=server Text='<%# Bind("AgreedSettlementPrice") %>' />

</ItemTemplate>

<EditItemTemplate>

<asp:TextBox runat="server" ID=txtAgreedPrice Text='<%# Bind("AgreedSettlementPrice") %>'></asp:TextBox>

</EditItemTemplate></asp:TemplateField>

<asp:BoundField DataField="Volume" HeaderText="Volume" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="Price" HeaderText="Price" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="NominalValue" HeaderText="Nominal Value" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="Strike" HeaderText="Strike" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:BoundField DataField="DeliveryDate" HeaderText="Delivery Date" ReadOnly="True" />

<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="LegId" SortExpression="LegId">

<ItemTemplate>

<asp:Label ID="lblLegID" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("LegId") %>'></asp:Label>

</ItemTemplate>

<EditItemTemplate>

<asp:TextBox runat="server" ID=txtLegID Text='<%# Bind("LegId") %>'></asp:TextBox>

</EditItemTemplate>

</asp:TemplateField>

</Columns>

<RowStyle BackColor="#FFFF66" ForeColor="#333333" />

<EditRowStyle BackColor="#FFFF66" Font-Names="Verdana" Font-Size="X-Small" ForeColor="#333333" />

<PagerStyle ForeColor="White" />

<AlternatingRowStyle BackColor="White" ForeColor="#333333" />

</asp:GridView>

&nbsp;<br />

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource_grid" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:DealCaptureDev %>" SelectCommand="sp_get_single_deal" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" UpdateCommand="Update trDealLeg Set PrimarySettlementPrice=@primarysettlement, AgreedSettlementprice=@agreedsettlement, LastUpdate=GetDate(), LastUpdateBy=Session('userid') Where LegID=@legid" EnableCaching="True" ConflictDetection="CompareAllValues" ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient">

<SelectParameters>

<asp:QueryStringParameter DefaultValue="" Name="dealnum" QueryStringField="deal"

Type="String" />

</SelectParameters>

<UpdateParameters>

<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtLegId" PropertyName="Text" Name="legId" />

<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtPrimarySettlement" Name="primarysettlement" PropertyName="Text" />

<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtAgreedSettlement" Name="agreedsettlement" PropertyName="Text"/>

<asp:SessionParameter DefaultValue="" Name="userid" SessionField="userid" />

</UpdateParameters>

</asp:SqlDataSource>

As seen above, controls such as txtPrimarySettlement are referenced but the update is not successful. The text boxes are within the GridEditSettlement gridview.  In the .aspx code I cannot use FindControl (at least I don't think it will work).

So the questions are:  Is it possible to reference the child controls, if so - how?  Is there another way to do this, such as in the vb code behind - in the either the gridview's RowUpdating event or the SQLDataSource's Updating event.

What is the best approach?  Anyone come up against this issue before?

 Thanks,

How To Create A Update Button To Update Two SqlDataSource Controls?

May 10, 2006

I want to update two tables in one page. So I created two FormView bound on two SqlDataSource controls, and I create a Update button on the bottom of page. And I writen some codes as below:
btnUpate_Click(object sender, EventArgs e){
   sqlDataSource1.Update();
   sqlDateSource2.Update();}
But, the records haven't updated.
In SqlDataSource2_Updating() function, I found all the parameters is null.
So, how to modify my code to do it.

Retrieving Selected Gridview Column Values For SQLDatasource Asp:controlparameters

Jun 12, 2006

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I 'm having problems retrieving a sqldatasource's asp:control parameter values from a selected row (during edit) in a gridview to update a record thru a stored procedure.  The stored procedure is pretty intense, so I'd like to keep it in SQL if possible instead of creating the generic "update table set ..." that I see in most examples.  It seems as if I can't get the propertyname right or something because it keeps giving me a "Procedure or function XX has too many arguments specified error".  Maybe the DataKeyNames is not right??  I've tried just passing one parameter (ProductID-same as DataKeyNames) using "SelectedValue" as propertyname and still get the same.  It's got to be something very simple, but I'm at a loss.  All parameters are spelled the same in the sp (with an added "@" at start) as in the asp:controlparameters.  Here's the gridview (asp.net 2.0 connecting to SQL Server 2005):
<asp:GridView ID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" AllowSorting="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataKeyNames="ProductID">
<Columns>
<asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ProductID" HeaderText="ProductID" HeaderStyle-BackColor="white" InsertVisible="False"
ReadOnly="True" SortExpression="ProductID" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Product" HeaderText="Product" SortExpression="Product" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ProductCat" HeaderText="ProductCat" SortExpression="ProductCat" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="VarRate" HeaderText="VarRate" SortExpression="VarRate" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="loadid" HeaderText="loadid" InsertVisible="False" ReadOnly="True"
SortExpression="loadid" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="loadamount" HeaderText="loadamount" SortExpression="loadamount" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ProductCol" HeaderText="ProductCol" SortExpression="ProductCol" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="PageID" HeaderText="PageID" SortExpression="PageID" ReadOnly="True" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
and the sqldatasource's info:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MARSProductEditor %>" ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient" SelectCommand="spGetLoadEditProductPrices" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" UpdateCommand="spUpdateProductPrices" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure" >
<UpdateParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="ProductID" Type="Int32" ControlID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" PropertyName=SelectedDataKey.Values("ProductID")></asp:ControlParameter>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="LoadID" Type="Int32" ControlID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" PropertyName=SelectedDataKey.Values("LoadID")></asp:ControlParameter>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="PageID" Type="Int32" ControlID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" PropertyName=SelectedDataKey.Values("PageID")></asp:ControlParameter>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="ProductCol" Type="Int32" ControlID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" PropertyName=SelectedDataKey.Values("ProductCol")></asp:ControlParameter>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="NewRate" Type="Double" ControlID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" PropertyName=SelectedDataKey.Values("NewRate")></asp:ControlParameter>
</UpdateParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlEstLoadsPerAcre" Name="LoadID" PropertyName="SelectedValue"
Type="Int32" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtEditType" Name="PageName" PropertyName="Text"
Type="String" />
</SelectParameters>

Qestion About SQLDataSource, Gridview, And Update Panel

Jun 4, 2008

I have a gridview that is tied to a SQLDataSource control which is inside an update panel.
What I'm trying to accomplish is when the page is loaded the gridview is filled from the SQLDataSource. I have some textboxes also on the page so that the user can add new items to the gridview. The update panel trigger is tied to my code behind page through a button click which added the new data to the DB with an INSERT statement. Since the gridview was inside the update panel I thought when I placed the new data into the DB and the update panel caused the portion of the page that holds the gridview to refresh that the gridview would show the newly added data but it is not.
I am missing something but I do not know what. I tried adding a gridview1.databind() and SQLDataSource1.DataBind() but niether caused the update of the gridview as I had hoped.
Thanks for any of your help.

GridView Update, With SqlDataSource UpdateCommand Set From Code-behind. (C#)

Mar 9, 2006

Hi all
I have a GridView on an aspx page, that is enabled for editing, deletion and sorting.
In the Page_Load event of the aspx page, i add a SqlDataSource to the page, and bind the source to the GridView.
When i click the update, or delete button, it makes a PostBack, but nothing is affected. I'm sure this has got something to do with the parameters.
First, i tried having the GridView.AutoGenerateColumns set to True. I have also tried adding the columns manually, but no affect here either.
The code for setting the commands, and adding the SqlDataSource to the page are as follows:
            string strConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString;            string strProvider = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ProviderName;            string selectCommand = "SELECT * FROM rammekategori";                        SqlDataSource ds = new SqlDataSource(strProvider, strConn, selectCommand);            ds.ID = "RammeKategoriDS";            ds.UpdateCommand = "UPDATE rammekategori SET Kategoribeskrivelse = @Kategoribeskrivelse WHERE (Kategorinavn = @Kategorinavn)";            ds.DeleteCommand = "DELETE FROM rammekategori WHERE (Kategorinavn = @Kategorinavn)";                        Parameter Kategorinavn = new Parameter("Kategorinavn", TypeCode.String);            Parameter Kategoribeskrivelse = new Parameter("Kategoribeskrivelse", TypeCode.String);            ds.UpdateParameters.Add(Kategorinavn);            ds.UpdateParameters.Add(Kategoribeskrivelse);            ds.DeleteParameters.Add(Kategorinavn);
            Page.Controls.Add(ds);
            SqlDataSource m_SqlDataSource = Page.FindControl("RammeKategoriDS") as SqlDataSource;
            if (m_SqlDataSource != null)            {                this.gvRammeKategorier.DataSourceID = m_SqlDataSource.ID;            }
As mentioned - no affect at all!
Thanks in advance - MartinHN

Gridview - SqlDatasource - How Do You Get All Values For A Like Text Parameter Or A Boolean Field When Filtering?

Mar 18, 2008

I have a gridview connected to a sqldatasource, and it works pretty good.  It gives me the subsets of the information that I need.  But, I really want to let them choose all the companies and/or any status.  What's the best way to get all the values in the gridview...besides removing the filters :)
I thought the company would be easy, I'd just set the selected value to blank "", and then it'd get them all....but that's not working.  And, for the boolean, I have no idea to get the value without having a separate query.
(tabs_done=@tabsdone) and (company like '%' + @company + '%')1 <asp:DropDownList ID="drpdwnProcessingStatus" runat="server">

Gridview Button For Calling Sqldatasource.update Fails

Aug 1, 2007

<!-- Trying
to create a GridView Survey form:
    Hi [User]
    Do you have these assets?
    [Gridview]

[Yes ] [No] [Comments textbox]
    234
[Yes ] [No] [Comments textbox]

Goal: The desire
is for the user to click Yes or No and have the database updated with the
user's name, date, response and any comments.

So far, I have
created SqlDataSource with Select and Update commands, created the gridview and
response buttons, setup the RowCommand and On_Updating Functions.

Problems:1) If I call the update() function for SqlDataSource1 and misuse the Defaultvalue parameters to run the sql, no update is posted to the database.

2) If I use the On_Update function to set the parameter values, I get "Data type mismatch in criteria expression."  (Additionally, the On_Update function runs twice which I don't understand)Can anyone tell

Porting VB 6 Data Controls To Use SqlDatasource Controls - Please Help!!!!

May 9, 2007

Hi,  I am porting a massive VB6 project to ASP.net 2005.  Most of the code is fine, however because the original developers used lots of data controls and my own time restrictions I thought to replicate the functionality by using Sqldatasource controls instead.
 These data controls are bound to DBtruegrids.   The project has has lots of code like...
 AdodcOrders.Recordset.RecordCount > 0 or  If AdodcOrders.Recordset.EOF  or  AdodcOrders.Recordset.MoveNext()  or
AdodcDetail.Recordset!FieldName
The problem is the sqldatasource control doesn't have a recordset/dataset property which I can access and manipulate, or does it?  What should I do to get round these?  The project has thousands of lines like this in so its not feasible to rewrite it (although if I could I would!).
 Any suggestions please gratefully appreciated.
many thanks
mike

UPDATE Statement Syntax Help Required C# && SqlDataSource Control

May 3, 2007

Hi,
I need to UPDATE the IP Address of a newly created user into a table (the value is currently set to default - " Not Available"), and I really dont know the syntax required to do this. So far I've derived all the variables needed using the following code:
protected void ContinueButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//Get the ip address and put it into the customer table - (the instance of this user now exists)
MembershipUser _membershipUser = Membership.GetUser();
Guid UserId = (Guid)_membershipUser.ProviderUserKey;<--------------------------------------------------------------I can see the UserId here if I pause the prog
SqlDataSource customerDataSource = new SqlDataSource();
customerDataSource.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ToString();
customerDataSource.UpdateParameters.Add("IPAddress", Request.UserHostAddress.ToString());<---------------------------------------I can see the IPAddress here
customerDataSource.UpdateCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text;
 what next
I've not got a clue as to what to write next. There is a try / catch statement after this using :
rowsAffected = customerDataSource.Update();
which remains at 0 no matter what I try.
Any help greatly appreciated.

how could i expand this so that the user can also search through the database but instead by searching through another column such as [type]?

VB.NET Codebehind Code To Update SQL Server 2005 Using SQLDataSource Control?

Jul 20, 2007

Hi, I am a newbie in using ASP.NET 2.0 and ADO.NET.  I wrote a hangman game and want to record statistics at the end of each game.  I will create and update records in the database for each authenticated user as well as a record for the Anonymous, unauthenticated user.  After a win or loss has occurred, I want to programmatically use the SQLDataSource control to increment the statistics counters for the appropriate record in the database (note I don't want to show anything or get user input for this function).
I need a VB.NET codebehind example that will show me how I should set up the parameters and update the appropriate record in the database.  Below is my code.  What happens now is that the program chugs along happily (no errors), but the database record does not actually get updated.  I have done many searches on this forum and on the general Internet for programmatic examples of an update sequence of code.  If there is a tutorial for this online or a book, I'm happy to check it out.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Having Trouble Configuring The SqlDataSource Control's Update And Insert Commands

Jul 24, 2007

I've just finished configuring the SELECT command for the SqlDataSource in my ASP.NET 2.0 web app.  It works fine and runs against a SQL Server 2005 database, using a stored procedure that I've written.
So, then I went to configure the SqlDataSource for the UPDATE and INSERT commands, and I've written two SP's for those as well.  In the designer the second form of the wizard asks for the Select statement.  I've already given that for the SELECT statement in the third form, and I also select the INSERT tab to specify the SP I want to use for inserting data and the UPDATE tab to specify the SP I want to use for updating data.  However, there appears to be no way that I can specify what the parameters are supposed to be for anything other than the SELECT command, through the designer.  Is that correct, or have I missed something?

Why is this happening, is it a setting that I have missed. Any help is appreciated.

Can I Use A SqlDataSource Control Exclusively To Pass Data To A Stored Procedure For Execution (insert/update Only)?

Feb 28, 2008

Hi,
I'm reasonably new to ASP.NET 2.0
I'm in my wizard_FinishButtonClick event, and from here, I want to take data from the form and some session variables and put it into my database via a stored procedure.  I also want the stored procedure to return an output value.  I do not need to perform a select or a delete.
For the life of me, I can't find a single example online or in my reference books that tells me how to accomplish this task using a SqlDataSource control.  I can find lots of examples on sqldatasources that have a select statements (I don't need one) and use insert and update sql statements instead of stored procedures (I use stored procedures).
I desperately need the syntax to:
a) create the SqlDataSource with the appropriate syntax for calling a stored procedure to update and/or insert (again, this design side of VS2005 won't let me configure this datasource without including a select statement...which I don't need).
b) syntax on how to create the parameters that will be sent to the stored procedure for this sqldatasource (including output parameters).
c) syntax on how to set the values for these parameters (again...coming from form controls and session variables)
d) syntax on how to execute, in the code-behind, the stored procedure via the sqldatasource.
If anybody has sample code or a link or two, I would be most appreciative.
Thank you in advance for any help!

User Controls And Sqldatasource

Nov 19, 2007

I created a user control file with 3 properties. I would like to call this user control in a datalist control in the hosting page and pass the properties from a sqldatasource control. To this end I have a code like below;
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"SelectCommand="SELECT [1], [2], [3] FROM [table1]"></asp:SqlDataSource>
<asp:DataList ID="DataList1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataMember="DefaultView" >
<ItemTemplate>
<uc:kk ID="kk1" runat="server" One='<%# Eval("1") %>' Two='<%# Eval("2") %>' Three='<%# Eval("3") %>' /></ItemTemplate></asp:DataList> I don't get any errors when I run the page, however it won't work as I wish. Only thing that appears in the rows of datalist is "01.01.0001 00:00:00".

Can Multiple Selection Controls Be Use With SqlDataSource?

Mar 4, 2007

 NET 2.0
I am using Visual Studio Express 2005 for database web developement.
I have created a database with 5 tables.  Two are associative tables.
They are
SoftwarePK SoftwareID      Title
SoftwareSolutionFK SoftwareIDFK SolutionID
SolutionPK SolutionID     Title
CategorySolutionFK CategoryFK Solution
Category
PK Category     Title
Criteria for a search with three sources of input into a SqlDataSource attached to a FormView for paged out.
The following are the Search Criteria input sources:1) ListBox in Multiple Selection Mode2) CheckBoxList with Mutiple checks posible2) TextBox with key word search in Title.
Each Solution has 0 or many Categories and 0 or many Software.
When the records are entered in the database, the associative information for Categories and Software are populated to filter thereturned values.
In NET  1.1, I would create a search string like the following in code behind by looping through the CheckBoxList and ListBox finally adding the TextBox:
SELECT Solution.SolutionID, Solution.Title FROM SolutionWHERE             Solution.SolutionID IN ('2','3','5')      AND             Solution.Title LIKE '%Math%'
I am unable to update the SelectCommand in the ASPX page.
However, when I use the I have used theSystem.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSources"SelectQuery Builder"I receive the following in the Source for ASPX: <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"
OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" SelectCommand="SELECT Solution.SolutionID, Solution.Title
FROM
Solution INNER JOIN CategorySolution ON Solution.SolutionID = CategorySolution.SolutionID
INNER JOIN SoftwareSolution ON Solution.SolutionID = SoftwareSolution.SolutionID">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="CheckBoxList1" DefaultValue="%" Name="CategoryID" PropertyName="SelectedValue" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ListBox1" DefaultValue="%" Name="SoftwareID" PropertyName="SelectedValue" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtTitleSearch" DefaultValue="%" Name="Title" PropertyName="Text" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource> I receive duplicate records and not sure if the code generated accesses the Mutiple Selected values in the CheckBoxList1 and ListBox1.Question: 1) If the SelectQuery generator will not access multiple selected values from the CheckBoxList1, how can I use code behind to replaceSelectCommand in the ASPX page?2) What is the best solution for using the CheckBoxList1, ListBox1, and TextBox for filtering my results? Sample code, references to solutions, corrections on logic, a new approach, how to use the wizard correctly would all be greatly appreciated.3) Can Multiple Selection Controls be use with a SqlDataSource SELECT Command?Thanks for your time,Sincerely,Unhistoric

Multiple SqlDataSource Controls On A Page

Jun 8, 2007

Thanks for your help.
 I'm just getting into ASP.NET 2.0 and started using the SqlDataSource control to declaritively connect to a database. I was wondering if I have two SqlDataSource controls on one page with two select commands querying the same database, will the that create to seperate instances of opening and closing the connection to the database, or will it open the database once, execute both queries, and then close the connection. It seems that if it creates two separate connections, it would still be more efficient to to connect to the database programmatically using ADO.NET. You would only need to make one trip to the database, pull down all of your data, and then close the connection.

Storedproc For Parent Child Gridview

Mar 19, 2008

Hi

I have a search page which contains 4 fields.Giving input to anyone of the field should display the result in
Parent Gridview.Parent Gridview has button in it .when i click on the button child Gridview should display related
refund details of customer in parent Gridview.

let us think i have two tables like Customer and refunddetails.

Parent Gridview should display Customer details,Child should display corresponding customers refund details.

I need two storedprocs for binding to both Gridviews.

i have first stored proc for Gridview1

set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[MyProc]
(@val1 varchar(255),
@val2 varchar(50),
@val3 varchar(50),
@val4 varchar(50))
--@out smallint OUTPUT
AS
select * from customer where
((@val1 IS NULL) or (name = @val1)) AND
((@val2 IS NULL) or(ssn = @val2)) AND
((@val3 IS NULL) or(accountnumber = @val3)) AND
((@val4 IS NULL) or(phonenumber = @val4))

now i need to capture the @val1 from storedproc1 and using that value retrieve the remaining values in refund table.
name is common in both the tables.

i need this because user can search the value using ssn or accountnumber or phonenumber or name.it is not required that user serches using name.Name textbox can be null.

so please someone help me.

Need Option To Override Control Position Changes - Tables Force Other Controls To End Of Rows

Apr 14, 2007

I am creating printed questionnaires based on data in a table. Portions of the layout must be exact and not be moved on the page.

I have some textboxes and rectangles on the left of a report and a table on the right. The table forces all the controls on the left to appear AFTER the last row and I can find no workaround. Basically, no controls can appear to the left of a table. The texboxes on the left give instructions to the user on how to fill out the items in the table on the right and I need them to remain where I place them. I have many other reports that require fixed positions.

Other report writers have texbox and label options to work around this . For example Visual Foxpro has an "Object Position" property with options for "Float", "Fix position relative to top of band", "Fix position relative to bottom of band". This allows the position to be forced if necessary.

This is very much needed and wanted in the Report Writer and I request it for the next release or service pack.

ReportViewer Control Doesnt Show 100% Of Report When Included In .Net Web Form With Other Controls

Apr 17, 2008

I created some controls for filtering the report that will be displayed on the same page, but below these controls. The controls take about 200px of the top of the form, while the report will be displayed in the rest of the page.

I'm using the ReportViewer control in Async mode, so it's being rendered as an Iframe, and this is necessary because some reports will take up to a couple minutes, so I want the loading animation.

As many of you know, this type of scenario will cause two scrollbars to be shown on this Web form: one for the main form, and the other for the Iframe containing the report. To prevent this, I have html,body set to overflow:hidden. This works great at preventing the outer scrollbar from showing, and only the report has a scrollbar.

The problem is that the bottom 200px (see first paragraph above) of the report doesnt show and cant be scrolled to. Has anyone come across a solution for this situation?

I'm basically stuck either having a report with two side by side scrollbars, or a report with 1 scrollbar that cuts off the last portion of each page of a report.

My ISP Does Not Allow Me To Remotely Connect To My Hosted SQL Server DB--How Can I Use SQLDataSource And Other Controls In Development?

Jun 30, 2007

All,
My ISP does not allow me to remotely connect to my hosted SQL Server DB--how can I use SQLDataSource and other data bound controls in development?
Here are my specs:
    IDE:  Visual Web Developer Express 2005
    Database:  MS SQL Server
    ASP Version:  ASP.NET 2.0
The SQL Server is hosted centrally at the ISP; basically I have been given the connection string parameters.
My question is this:
    Do I use two web.config files (one for when I develop locally and one for when I deploy remotely)?  If so, how?  Will the SQLDataSource control find the connection string defined in web.config on the remote server?  I don't want to have to write all of the database code and it would be a big loss of one of the major benefits of using ASP.NET 2.0 if I do.
 Any help will be greatly appreciated,
 Leslie

Error While Using Database Procedure In A Gridview Control

Dec 19, 2006

Dear Forum,
I have a gridview control  which is associated to a storedprocedure  with a parameter(Customer Number) to be supplied.  In the Define Custom Statement or stored procedure section  I selected stored procedure and selected the stored procedure.  The Define Parameter window I defaulted the Parameter Source as 'none' and default value as '%'.   In the next screen, I do a test query which retuns the following error
There was an error executing the query.  Please check the syntax of the command and if present, the type and values of the parameters  and ensure that they are correct.
[Error 42000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Drive][SQL Server] Procedure 'SP_TransactionDetails' expects parameter '@cnum' which was not supplied.
I am using SQL server studio  2005 version2.0.
But the same procedure, if I use as SQL Statement, it works.
Can somebody help me.
Thanks,
Hidayath

Setting Up Dynamic WHERE Conditions For A Gridview Control

Jun 8, 2008

I have a simple gridview control set up that contains a single ControlParameter (a DropDownList) whose value is used in my SqlDataSource's SelectCommand:
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Wood_table] WHERE [wood_type] = ISNULL(@wood_type, [wood_type])"
The ISNULL check is so that I can select "ALL" from my dropdown and get all the rows with null values.
Everything works fine. Now what I'd like to do is exclude a specific wood_type value from the query if a checkbox control is selected. So what I'd like my select query to be when it's checked is something like
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Wood_table] WHERE [wood_type] = ISNULL(@wood_type, [wood_type]) AND @wood_type <> 'pine' "
So I'd like the option of excluding that certain type of wood from the default query (all rows). I thought it might be better to just have a value in the dropdown list that was "ALL except pine" but that doesn't seem like it would work, what would I bind that to?
I fooled around with having the CheckBox oncheckchanged event set a global based on the checked status, easy enough, but then how can I modify my SelectCommand? Should I just access the SqlDataSource object programmatically in my CheckBox handler and fiddle with the SelectCommand property? I tried this and it works, but this seems messy, now if I modify my GridView in Design mode I need to remember to update my SelectCommand strings in the CheckBox handler too. Is this the best way to do this?

GridView - SqlDataSource

I have created a GridView that uses a SqlDataSource.  When I run the page it does not pull back any data.  However when I test the query in the SqlDataSource dialog box it pulls back data.

</asp:SqlDataSource>
I can get it to fill with data by manually filling the GridView without using a SqlDataSource but then I cannot get the sorting to work when I do it that way.  Actually not sure if the sorting will work this way either as I cannot get it to fill with data.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Issue Inserting Null Value Into A Formview/gridview Control

Jan 14, 2007

Hi,
My formview or gridview control stops updating or deleting a record once the record has a null value.
I have table tblTest with the following
pkID int NOT NULL **IDENTITY COLUMN** string1 varchar(30) string2 varchar(30)
I then create a SqlDataSource with the statement:
Select * From [tblTest]
I have the insert, update and delete statements generated, and choose optimistic concurrency. I add a couple records of dummy data.
I then drag a Formview control onto the page, and bind it to the SqlDataSource I just created. I then fire it up in my browser, and I can then update, insert and delete records. However, as soon as I update a record with a null value, I can no longer update or delete that record.
So, if I had a record in my FormView like:
string1: foo string2: bar
I can update and delete normally. And when I update to:
string1: foo string2:
the database correctly inserts a null value into string2. However, once that null is in the record, I can't change anything about the record. If I try to delete the record, the FormView will then display the previous record, but I can still page to the record that should have been deleted, and it still exists in the db. If I try to update the record, the edits I make will not keep and the process will fail silently.
What am I doing wrong? Should i be binding to a different object?
Regards,
Chris

[:#] Problems Viewing The Custom Sql Statement In The Gridview Control

Jul 28, 2007

Hi,
 I really need some help trying to figure out why my gridview is not working when I create a custom sql statement. It "executes" the query, but gives me an error message when I "test the query". Here is the error message: "There was an error executing the query. Please check the syntax of the command and if present, the types and values of the parameters and ensure they are correct. Syntax error: Expecting '.', identifier or quoted identifier."
Here is my sql statement:
SELECT     TBLPROJECTS.NAME, TBLPROJECTTYPES.NAME AS PROJECTTYPE, TBLPROJECTS.DESCRIPTION, TBLUSERS_1.LOGIN AS OWNERNAME,                       TBLUSERS.LOGIN AS MANAGERNAME, TBLPROJECTS.START_DATE, TBLPROJECTS.END_DATE, TBLAOI.NAME AS AREAOFINTEREST,                       TBLPROJECTS.MANPOWER, TBLUNITS.NAME AS MANPOWERUNITFROM         TBLPROJECTS INNER JOIN                      TBLAOI ON TBLPROJECTS.AOI_ID = TBLAOI.ID INNER JOIN                      TBLPROJECTTYPES ON TBLPROJECTS.PROJECTTYPE_ID = TBLPROJECTTYPES.ID INNER JOIN                      TBLUNITS ON TBLPROJECTS.MANPOWERUNITS_ID = TBLUNITS.ID INNER JOIN                      TBLUSERS ON TBLPROJECTS.MANAGER_ID = TBLUSERS.ID INNER JOIN                      TBLUSERS TBLUSERS_1 ON TBLPROJECTS.OWNER_ID = TBLUSERS_1.ID
I have tested it on a new project and still it does not work, I cannot find any problem, please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Profile, SQLDataSource And GridView

May 11, 2007

Hello.When I create a user at the ASP.NET database, I need to insert more fields than the defaults, and I do it like this:         Dim customProfile As ProfileCommon = ProfileCommon.Create(CreateUserWizard1.UserName, True)
customProfile.telephone =
(CType(CreateUserWizard1.CreateUserStep.ContentTemplateContainer.FindControl("TelephoneText"),
TextBox)).Text(telephone example)Those data are inserted at the DB at the aspnet_Profile table, in the fields PropertyNames & PropertyValuesString, but they are saved together (see image above)

I want to separate those properties in the GridView as long as each property appears in a column, is it possible? Thank you very much, i'm expecting your answers.
