Issues Running Through Config IIS With SQL Compact Setup Using Remote IIS Server
Jan 11, 2008
I've been trying to run through the Microsoft example at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb226707.aspx entitled "Configuring IIS for SQL Server 2005 CE Remote data access and Merge replication" but I'm having issues. The first time I ran through it I tried to use IIS on a server that was not the same as the SQL server and it didn't work at all. So I ran through it a second time and used the SQL servers IIS for testing and when I went to access the webpage I got a HTTP 500 Internal Error. After a while of playing I got a "Service Unavailable" message but still not the "Microsoft SQL Server CE server agent" screen I should have gotten. So my first question is how do I get this to work with a seperate IIS server? Which step do I change because I did put the right IIS and made a site there but it didn't work? I thought changing step 5 under the "To configure IIS for SQL Server CE Sync" to my IIs server would do it but it didn't. Maybe because in step 8 of the same section you have to use the share name and not a local directory even though its the same directory on the IIs server?
Also I just want to make sure I'm going down the right path with this. I have a VB.Net 05 application that connects to a database on a SQL 2005 server internally. I also have a seperate IIS server that is serving some web pages. Network is protected by both a hardware firewall then to a ISA box which I can control and allow http access to the internal IIS for whatever subdomain I end up choosing. I would like to create a mobile version of the application for some Mobile 6 devices we have and have them able to sync there data. In fact they don't even need to sync, just be able to download the server data once a week or on command. I've gotten the SDK for mobile devices, the "How to pull data using the RDA object", written the framework for the program, and now I need to figure out how to push the data out so it can be retrieved by my mobile devices over the internet. I've tried searching for answers, I thought this would be a popular thing to do, but I'm having trouble finding anything.

SQL Server 2005 SP2 Replication
I am having problems installing the SQL Server Compact Server Tools on my
Vista laptop to allow me to connect my Mobile Device running SQL Server
Compact directly to my SQL Server 2005 database through IIS.
I have done this successfully with an XP machine so I'm not sure if it is
Vista problem or not.
I have installed SQL Server 2005 SP2. When I try to install the replication
server tools (Sqlce30setupen.msi), in "System Configuration Check" window I get a failure on "SQL Server requirement" that says: "You must first install the Replication Components for SQL Server 2000 SP 3a
or higher or the SQL Server 2005 Replication Components" and the client components are full instaled in my computer.
I need help for detect and correct the problem.
Sincereously,
Alonso Junior

I am making a WPF app, and I want to use SQL Server Compact 4.0 for database management, but it doesn't support Remote data access, on the other hand SQL Server Compact 3.5 does support it but I can't use it in WPF ( I've installed it but can't add it in my project, it's not there in the templates). So is there any alternatives, for a light DBMS, that are not installed separately?

Hi,
On the page http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/compact/default.mspx it is recomended that you dont use SQL Server Compact Edition if "you want to run as a service" - is this refering to the host application or to the fact the SQL Server Compact Edition is an embedded database rather than the more traditional SQL Server client/server architecture?
If its the former is this likely to change at any point in the future? Also what sort of problems are likely to occur if we did run it from within a windows service?
Many thanks,
- James

Hello,
I just read the thread on renaming the server, and running setup. My question is how do I rerun setup? SQL 7 was installed from the Back Office cd and when I try to run setup it tells me that my SQL Server is corrupted and I need to run setup. If I run Setup from the MSSQL7 directory, it wants to "upgrade" to standard edition. What am I missing here?
Thanks,
Robin

i have a client with a windows 2003 server with 4 processors & 32 GB RAM, then MSSQL 2000 SP3. our software seems to run fine on it until the Task Manager shows the MSSQL using 1.7GB of RAM. At this point the whole system seems to slow down to a snails pace. Any ideas as to why 1.7GB and it never goes over that amount no matter how much activity i run on it. Restart mssql and everything seems to run good up until we see the 1.7GB again.

I set up the collector, and specify the Run As as my AD account in the Collector Set - Properties - General screen. My AD account is the local admin of the remote server.
However, the collector does not seem to work. Although the collecting set is shown as running, the The blg file stays at 64K. If I open it, there is nothing inside (no counter at the bottom). What did I miss?

I am about designing an access project file that connect to a SQL Server database : it could be either on the local computer or a remote workstation, this depending on where the front end is running.
Bypassing the default log on dialog box i have set my own form that users should use to connect on adp. Then using baseconnection string i connect the adp to sql server database.
My concern is how can i check from vba if the instance of SQL Server where my back end database is located is running in order to make
users knowing that due sql server service status off their connection
tentative will fail.
inform u i can check same from console management however i would to automate same controle from my adp and avoid that users have to operate such task...

Hi,
While connecting remote SQL server through upgrade advisor I am getting the below errors:
Error: Unable to connect to server. Reason: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. Pls let me know if anyone has faced this issue and know how to fix.

Hi,
I am trying to apply the sample provided by Microsoft in the following article:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms403355.aspx
I am trying to call a SSIS package from a web service hosted on the same machine as the package file is sitting. The package is running fine from the Agent and also by the "Integration Services Project" in VS.NET.
I had a lot of problems with permissions but they are resolved, at least I have no error messages to point to that direction. Now I am getting these results:
1. Error: -1073659874 / Description: The file name "\Diver-svrInputDataFilesdn_cust.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
2. Error: -1073659875 / Description: Connection "bdn_cust" failed validation.
3. Error: -1073659874 / Description: The file name "\Diver-svrInputDataFilesdn_cust.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
4. Error: -1073659875 / Description: Connection "SourceConnectionFlatFile" failed validation.
Where \DiverMInputFilesdn_cust.txt" is a file processed by the package.
Is there anybody who can give me some directions. Thank you in advance.

Hello,
we've got a SQL Server 2005 which replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.5. Every 10 to 20 synchronisations we're getting the error mentioned above. A Soft reset of the device helps to make the synchronization working again.
Why is this error happening and how can we resolve this?
BTW, we've also running system that replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.0 without having this problems.
Thanks,
Markus

Is there a way to automatically setup SQL Server Express to allow remote connections during the installation process?
We are deploying SQL Server Express with our application and I really can't ask SMB customers to go through a series of rather complicated steps after our "turn key" setup installs everything in order for any of the other computers in their office to connect.
What's the reasoning behind that, anyway? Why create a database server setup which by default doesn't allow anyone except the server to access it? I guess that makes sense for ASP.NET but the web fad isn't the only platform developers use these days.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Evan

Hi,
I have installed SQL 2005 and was trying to run one of the Samples. I installed SQL as an instance, but when I run the setup script, it fails because it can not assign permissions to the ASPNET account.
It looks like it thinks the account is ServerNameInstanceNameASPNET, but it should be ServerNameASPNET.
Thanks,

hi all,
thanks for the valuable information all the time!!! saved me a lot of time...
our team developes a system for text data improvement using ssis .
we have a few heavy packages that we want to execute on two separate "SSIS servers" that will be dedicated to runnung these packages only, and repeatedly. the main sql server will be placed on a different server machine .
my question is:
what is the best way to do this?
if we schedule these packages as a job of the Sql Ajent- does that mean that the packages will be executed on the sql server machine (which is not what we want) ? or could we define a remote machine to run the package on, and specify our "SSIS servers"?
or- should we use a simple scedualer on the "SSIS servers" using a dtexec command? but then i loose the benefits in using the sql agent- such as logging, notifications, etc.
do we need to install sqlserver on these "ssis servers"?
thanks for your replies!

I seem to be missing something with SQL 2005 SSIS and I am wondering how I would accomplish my taks. With SQL 2000 and DTS we designed our DTS packages so that we could load one file or database from start to finish. We then have controlling programs written in VB that will monitor directories, when a file shows up in a directory it loads the package, changes the necessary properties and executes it. These programs handle all of our error notifications and dealing with the files afterwards, making sure files are complete in the directory before the DTS runs, etc. With .NET and SQL 2005 I have learned that I can change the properties by using variables and expressions, which I think would handle all of our situation but I can not run them remotely. The documentation says that I could setup a scheduled job and then call sp_start_job from my program. That seems like it would require a lot of scheduled jobs and then I still need to get the parameters into the packages. The other option is to use a web service, that would require IIS on my SQL box which everywhere says I don't want. Am I using SSIS for something I am not supposed to be or how do I accomplish this in 2005?
I have noticed that you can not even run packages through the SQL Server Management Studio. We have a number of packages that are built that are run on demand when needed. In SQL 2000 I could just click and execute the package. In 2005 is my only option to setup some sort of fake job in the job scheduler?

Hi,
I have created a SSIS package on my local machine.
I need to deploy this package on a Test Server and it should execute as a scheduled job.
I am not sure of the steps I need to follow and things I need to be careful about.
I have the following doubts:
1) While developing the package, I have referred to the local SQL Server with Windows credentials.
2) The package, once deployed on the Test Server needs to point to the test server database with SQL Server credentials.
3) I know how to create a deployment utility. However, I am not sure if the deployment manifest will run without errors on the remote machine.
4) Even if the deployment manifest executes successfully and deploys the packages, how do I generate a script to create a Job and schedule the package?
5) I am using a File DSN to connect to IBM DB2 database in one of my Data Flow Tasks in this package. How do I configure it automatically on the remote machine? Won't there be any issues with it?
Please help me...
Thanks and Regards,

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:
MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2
If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?
Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.
I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).
Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

I'm new in the DBA position recently aquired, and I'm having a few issues with MSSQL configuration and administration.
1. I have created a two maintenance plans, one for system databases and another one for user databases, this plans include things such as, Integrity Checks, Optimizations and DB Backups, however the Integrity Checks fail with the error that the DB's must be in single user mode, how can I go about to make this and what are the implications of doing so?
2. There's been a few reports of MSSQL server compromises through UDP port 1433, so I closed it at firewall level, only TCP 1433 is going through, do I really need UDP 1433?
Thank you very much.

Greetings,
My connection string looks like this (in the web.config) and is used with many data controls in my application:
<connectionStrings><add name="connection_NAH" connectionString="Data Source=NAH;Initial Catalog=NAH;User ID=xxxx;Password=xxxx" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /></connectionStrings>
I'm using vb.net and my code looks like this:Dim myConnection As SqlConnectionDim mySqlCommand As SqlCommandmyConnection = New SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("connection_NAH").ConnectionString)mySqlCommand = New SqlCommand("UPDATE tbMasterOption SET ImageURL = 'test.gif' WHERE ID = 116977")Try myConnection.Open() mySqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()Catch ex As Exception Label3.Text = "Couldn't update database record: " + ex.ToString()Finally myConnection.Close() Label3.Text = "Closed db connection"End Try
------------------
The only output I get is from the label3 which says "Closed db connection". Doesn't look like any exceptions are thrown but when I look at the database the record is not updated. Originally I thought my SQLConnection was not constructed correctly but I also tested it by outputting the connection string to Label3 which looked fine. The only other thing I can think of is in the use of ExecuteNonQuery(). Is this the right method or do I need something else? Running the sql query manually works...
Thanks in advance..
