Issues With An Output Param From A Sproc Using SQLDataSource

I have a stored proc that I'd like to return an output param from. I'm using a SQLDataSource and invoking the Update method which calls the sproc.The proc looks like this currently:

On the page source side, the params are defined declaratively:

When I run it, the code behind throws the following exception - "Unable to cast object of type 'System.DBNull' to type 'System.String'"
PLEASE HELP! What am I doing wrong? Is there a better way to get output from a stored proc?

I have attached the results of checking an Update sproc in the Sql database, within VSS, for a misbehaving SqlDataSource control in an asp.net web application, that keeps telling me that I have too many aurguments in my sproc compared to what's defined for parameters in my SQLdatasource control.....

I have gone through the page code with a fine tooth comb as well as the sproc itself. I have tried everything I can think of, including creating a new page and resetting the fields, in case something got broken that I can't see.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks or info that might help me?

The following stored procedure sets a value for the @@RowCount global variable.
How do I make use of it in the Data Access Layer?
When I set the SPROC as the source for the object, the value numberRows does not appear to be an option. In the end I just want to set the value of @@RowCount to a Label.Text

I'm developing a web app using VS2005. I have a webpage with panel containing a gridview populated by a SQLdatasource. The SQLdatasource in turn is populated by a stored procedure that can take up to 5 parameters. The user types in up to 5 separate words (searchterms) in a text box which are then parsed and passed to the stored proc in the datasource which performs a fulltext search. The gridview then becomes visible. My problem is that unless the user types in 5 searchterms (no less), the gridview returns zero rows. 5 searchterms returns the proper results. Somehow, I need to be able to pass in null or empty values for unneeded parameters.
I've tested the stored procedure in Query Analyzer and from within the SQLdatasource configuration (using Test Query) using 0 up to 5 parameters and it works fine, so that's not my problem. Hello everyone,
I am working through a tutorial and have stumbled into something that does not quite make sense to me. I was wondering if someone could help me understand this.
I have created this SP, this all makes sense to me due to the assignment of the artistname column value to the @artistname variable. In other words what is on the right of the equal sign is assigned to what is on the left.

@artistname varchar(30) output

Now when you execute this SP, what does not makes sense to me is if I need to declare a variable to hold the output, which I presume is null, shouldn't the @returnname be on the left side of the equal sign instead of the right?

Please help me on this one.
I need to return a value to VB.
I've tried returning a numeric value NUMERIC(25,20) via an output parameter but this didn't work. I'm know at a point in wich I created a bigint and multiplied the value so that the decimals are gone. However it only returns NULL?!?!?!?!!?!?

I have a stored proc that will insert a new row into a table
with the values of the parameters you pass in. I need it to
return the value of the ID that's generated by an Identity
column once the row has been written and that value has
been generated. If I just do a SELECT Max(), I could
accidentally grab a row written by someone else, right?

is it true that I will not be able to use the returned value from an sp that is called on every row from an oledb command transformation? I see all kinds of complaints on the web but cant determine if this would be a waste of time. I'd like to append the returned value (which is calculated and cannot be joined in the buffer) to the data on its way out of the transformation.

I keep getting an exception when trying to cast an output param as a float type. the SPROC is marked as float OUTPUT and the Cost column in the database is a float type as well. And there are no nulls in the cloumn either. here is how my code looks:

//invalid cast gets throw on here (it happens with all my float types)

I have tried using derived column and ole db command but can't seem to grasp how to pass the value to the derived column. I can get oledb command to run using 'exec dbo.spPK ?, ?, ?, ?, ? output' but don't know what to do from here.

I executed the above code and I got no errors, no warnings and no output in the TextBox1 for the result of "InvTotal"!!??
I have 4 questions to ask for solving the problems in this project:
#1 Question: I do not know how to do the "DataBinding" for "Name" in the "Text.Box1".
How can I do it?
#2 Question: Did I set the CommandType property of the command object to
CommandType.StoredProcedure correctly?
#3 Question: How can I define the 1 output parameter (@InvTotal) and
2 input parameters (@DateVar and @VendorVar), add them to
the Parameters Collection of the command object, and set their values
before I execute the command?
#4 Question: If I miss anything in print out the result for this project, what do I miss?
Please help and advise.

I am trying to get a stored proceedure to return the autogenerated numerical primary key of the last row created to our appliciation. I have created what I thought was an output parameter to handle this however when the application runs I get a message that seems to indicate that it is ASKING for the parameter instead of returning it. We have a service written in c# that is processing packages of xml that contain up to 100 elements of goods consignment data.
In amongst that element is an identifier for each consignment. This is nvarchar(22) in our table. I have not observed any IDs that are different in length in the XML element.
The service picks up these packages from MSMQ, extracts the data using XPATH and passes the ID into the SPROC in question. This searches for the ID in one of our tables and returns a bool to the service indicating whether it was found or not. If found then we add a new row to another table. If not found then it ignores and continues processing.
The service seems to be dealing with a top end of around 10 messages a minute... so a max of about 1000 calls to the SPROC per minute. Multi-threading has been used to process these packages but as I am assured, sprocs are threadsafe.It is completing the calls without issue but intermittently it will return FALSE. For these IDs I am observing that they exist on the table mostly (there are the odd exceptions where they are legitimately missing).e.g Yesterday I was watching the logs and on seeing a message saying that an ID had not been found I checked the database and could see that the ID had been entered a day earlier according to an Entered Timestamp.

So on occasions (about 0.33% of the time) it is failing to get a bit 1 setting in @bFound after the SELECT TOP(1).
change @pIdentifier nvarchar(25) to nvarchar(22)
Trim any potential blanks from either side of both parts of the identifier comparison
Change the SELECT TOP(1) to an EXISTS
The only other thought is the two way parameter direction in the C# for the result OUTPUT. I have been unable to replicate this using a test app and our test databases. Have observed selects failing to find even though the data is there, like this before?

Using C#, SQL Server 2005, ASP.NET 2, in a web app, I've tried removing the size from parameters of type NCHAR, NVARCHAR, and VARCHAR. I'd rather just send a string and let the size of the parameter in the SP truncate any extra chars if need be. I began getting the error below, and eventually realized it happened only with output parameters, as in the code snippet below.String[3]: the Size property has an invalid size of 0. par = new SqlParameter("@BusinessEntity", SqlDbType.NVarChar); par.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output; cmd.Parameters.Add(par); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();What's the logic behind this? I am using SqlDataSource programmatically in my data access layer - mainly for convenience but it does generally work fine with no obvious performance issues.
The problem I have is with getting back an output parameter. I have an insert-type stored procedure (in Sql Server 2005) operating on a table with an identity column as the primary key:

and, BTW, the row is deleted!

I am having a problem getting the output parameter from a stored procedure that deletes a record. I use the EXACT same process for the insert and update procs and they work fine. For some reason, the delete proc is either not returning an output parameter, or the SqlDataSource (dsCompany) is not able to get the information in the dsCompany_Deleted method. I simply want the proc to return an output value so that when I eventually get around to checking if the record can be deleted due to foreign key restraints, I can deliver the appropriate message to the user.I have highlighted the line that is giving the problem. I also highlighted a default value in the parameter, that when removed causes the app to crash because it is getting a null value back. I'm sorta new with using stored procedures and I'm at a loss of how to achieve my desired result.
What I am trying to do is retrieve a value from a table before it is updated and then use this original value to update another table. If I execute the first called sproc in query analyzer it does return the value I'm looking for, but I'm not really sure how to capture the returned value. Also, is there a more direct way to do this?

I'm working with a dataset something like this:
TypeID Sales($)

And a multivalued parameter that lets the user select which TypeIDs specifically he wants to see:
ParamID ParamValue
1 Q1
2 Q2
3 Q3
4 Q4
And in my Report, I have data showing up something like this:
CountofAllSales: 6
SumOfAllSales: 491.18
CountofCustomSales: (count of sales with type specified in parameter)
SumOfCustomSales: (sum of sales with type specified in parameter)
The count and sum of custom sales should show -ONLY- the numbers from the TypeIDs selected in the multi-value parameter. But the CountAll and SumAll show everything, regardless. This is where I run into problems. I can't seem to find an "in" clause in the SSRS expressions. If the TypeID parameter was single value, I could write something like this
Expression for CountOfCustomSales:
=SUM(iif(Fields!TypeID.Value = Parameters!TypeID.Value, 1, 0))
However, since its multi-valued, that won't work. You'd have to write something like:
=SUM(iif(Fields!TypeID.Value = Parameters!TypeID.Value(0), 1, 0)) +
SUM(iif(Fields!TypeID.Value = Parameters!TypeID.Value(1), 1, 0)) +
....
SUM(iif(Fields!TypeID.Value = Parameters!TypeID.Value(length), 1, 0))
And obviously this doesn't work when you don't know exactly how many elements are going to be selected.
What would be ideal would be something like an "in" clause, but I can't find any such functionality or think how to write my own function:
=SUM(iif(Fields!TypeID.Value in
Parameters!TypeID.Values, 1, 0))
Short of modifying the StoredProc itself (and for me, that means red tape. :( :( ) can anyone think of a way to count/sum only the values specified in an MVP??

Is there a limit to how many items you can have in a multi value param list. I have 20 items in an activity type param and when I chose "Select All" and run the report, it doesn't return. I opened profiler and picked up the following statement sent to SQL:

If I take any one of the items in "da.activitytype in" out (for example....N''Trainer'')...the query is fine. But if I run it as is, it never returns. I have also reduced the number of items in the MVP to 19 and "Select All" and it runs fine...it just bombs when I have 20 and Select All. Any ideas?

I am trying for several weeks to figure out how can I create a stored procedure with parameters that returns all rows from a column (even then Nulls) when the parameter value is not set (or is '%', or anything tha might be. In a few words, in case the user hasn't input any data).
I 've created a WHERE clause that goes like this: WHERE fieldName LIKE @param + N'%' OR IS NULL
Well this query returns all rows in case the user hasn't input data but if the user inputs data it returns the correct rows but it is also returns null fields.
