It Takes 2 Seconds To Transfer 1000 Records Using DTS.
Mar 27, 2001
I am trying to transfer 90 million records/250 bytes row length from oracle 8i to sqlserver 2000
using DTS and it is taking 2 seconds to transfer 1000 records. Is there any way I can transfer 90 million records fast at all. This will take more than 10 hours to transfer it.
Thanks,
Ranjan

I have a Stored Procedure that has a query in it and it take 0 second and then a stored procedure that takes 16 seconds. From what I can tell they shoul be the same.
It doesn't recompile when i run the stored procedure, I checked that.

I have a sql snippet from a 3rd party application that will not complete its transaction. The SELECT statement executes but does not finish. Instead the statement just sits in AWAITING COMMAND for 1000 seconds then dies, thus killing the UPDATE statement that is supposed to follow.
The CROSS JOIN and CROSS APPLY seem suspect.

Hi All
I'm new to sql server. I have built simple database apps using MFC CRecordset over MS Access. I'm tying to learn about SQL server by building a simple app using MFC CRecordset in Visual Studio 2005.
I have multiple CRecordset classes within my app. When I developed the app over MS Access I read somewhere that it was better to have a single database object that is shared by multiple recordsets. So I ended up with something like this -
Code Snippet
// In the class header - 2 CRecordset derived classes
CMyRecordSet m_MyRecordSet; // Connects to the database using
// its "GetDefaultConnect" string
CAnotherSet * m_pAnotherSet;
// Within a "CreateRecordSets" method
if (!m_MyRecordSet.IsOpen()) m_MyRecordSet.Open();
// This works fine
m_pAnotherSet = new CAnotherSet (m_MyRecordSet.m_pDatabase);
m_pAnotherSet->Open();
// This open takes 10s to execute,
// there are 10 rows of data in the table
I have about 6 recordsets that I create in this way, there is a tiny amount of data in the database. The open for the next record sets return immediately.
The same app over MS Access works fine - no delays. SQLServer Express and Access are both running on my development PC.
Can anyone tell me why this call takes so long and whether there is a way of avoiding it?
Subsequent calls to the database return immediately.
Thanks
Alec

SQL 2000 Installation - Clustered6 GB of RAMDual Core with hyperthreading (shows 4 procs)Created the simplest of tests, created 2 DB's (1 for publication, 1 for subscription), 1 table with 2 columns, a PK int and a varchar(50).Setup distributionSetup the publication on that 1 tableSetup a pull subscription on that publicationinserted a record, takes on average 12 seconds to replicate to the subscription DB, tested it 7 times, and every time it takes 12 seconds, tried updating a column, still takes 12 seconds.It must be something very simple - anyone have an idea what could be going on here that would make it take so long? Any type of trace I can do to see what the bottleneck is? Going to start a SQL Profiler trace and see what I see, brb.

Hi guys, need help again.
I'm running packages from C# code and thus I need to create an instance of SqlServer.DTS.Runtime.Application.
In my maching, creating the application instance doesn't even take 1 sec but when the application was deployed to our QA server creating the instance took 30 secs (always ... every single time with no exception).
this single code is taking the 30 secs:
Application integrationService = New Application();
Does anyone have any idea what I need to check or configure to make this faster?

Hi,Currently we're a building a metadatadriven datawarehouse in SQLServer 2000. We're investigating the possibility of the updatingtables with enormeous number of updates and insert and the use ofcheckpoints (for simple recovery and Backup Log for full recovery).On several website people speak about full transaction log and thepace of growing can't keep up with the update. Therefore we want tocreate a script which flushes the dirty pages to the disk. It's notquite clear to me how it works. Questions we have is:* How does the process of updating, insert and deleting works with SQLServer 2000 with respect to log cache, log file, buffer cache, commit,checkpoint, etc?What happens when?* As far as i can see now: i'm thinking of creating chunks of data of1000 records with a checkpoint after the Query. SQL server has thedefault of implicit transactions and so it will not need a commit.Something like this?* How do i create chunks of 1000 records automatically withoutcreating a identity field or something. Is there something like SELECTNEXT 1000?Greetz,Hennie

I need a little help here..I want to transfer ONLY new records AND update any modified recordsfrom Oracle into SQL Server using DTS. How should I go about it?a) how do I use global variable to get max date.Where and what DTS task should I use to complete the job? Data DrivenQuery? Transform data task? How ? can u give me samples. Perhaps youcan email me the Demo Package as well.b) so far, what I did was,- I have datemodified field in my Oracle table so that I can comparewith datelastrun of my DTS package to get new records- records in Oracle having datemodified >Max(datelastrun), and transferto SQL Server table.Now, I am stuck as to where should I proceed - how can I transfer theserecords?Hope u can give me some lights. Thank you in advance.

Hi Teachies,
I am using SQL Server Standard Edition .
in one of my table , there i am inserting around 25 millions records and that takes time around more than 3 hrs.
same thing is happening while fetching records from that table.
this database contains only single file group i.e primary
and that table contains .. Clustered as well as non clustered index.
it doesnot have any Triggers.
How do i increase this performance.
Paritioning of table cannot be use in SQL Server Standard Edition.
Or Dropping all non clustered index before insert operation will improve my performance.
Please suggest me.

Hi!
I have 2 tables (both have the same structure):
ID -> bigint (identity, not for replication, primary key)
Url -> nvarchar(1000)
MainUrl -> nvarchar(1000)
Tbl1 cantains about 0,5 mln records, and tbl2 - 1 mln.
What I need, is to copy records from tbl2 to tbl1. But records in tbl1 are unique, and it can't change. (Unique must be only "Url"; (and ID, but it's automatic)). How can I do this in fast way? Now I'm using SELECT for each record in tbl2 to see if it exist in tbl1. But it's a bit slow... Is there any faster method? (One thing: I'm beginner in databeses, so I'm wrote VB application to transfer records. How can I do it using only Microsoft Sql server?)
--------------
I'm forgot to write, I'm using MsSql 2005.

Hi,
I am facing a big problem in data transfer from Access To SQL. Well the problem is i want to transfer nr about 50 lacs record from access to sql. at my side where sql server is complete install i could not find any problem and it transfer all data in 5 to 7 mins. now problem is at client side we not install entire sql but we install sql runtime which is available with installshied. and whenever i start to transfer data there is another exe called DLLHost.exe is run and it ate near about 70% to 75% Memory of system. well i use sql OPENROWSET statement and as soon as that statement fire at machine where entire sql is not install and only runtime install it starts to eat system memory so instead of transfer all data in 5 to 10 min it take more then 6 hrs bcaz dllhost.exe eat memory. is there any better way to transfer this records more fast pls let me know.

Hi All,
I used a data flow task, and when trying to transfer data from a OLE DB Source (records ~ 75 lac) to a destination OLE DB Source, SSIS fails at the middle giving an error saying the Transaction log got filled, try again after clearing the same.
My query is what is the most efficient way to transfer say records more than 50 lac ensuring that it doesn't fail in the middle?
Thanks in Advance,
Mithun.

Hello,
I have a VB.NET Windows Application with a SQL 2K5 back end.
The application creates a view which produces approximately 5 million records. I am attempting to transfer these records to a table programmatically, but every attempt causes a timeout. The name of the source server and view will change depending on the client's installation.
Using the standard SQL connection/command objects with the "INSERT INTO TABLE (SELECT * FROM VIEW)" doesn't work at all.
What is the best way to transfer these records programmatically?
Thanks,
-Torrwin

I have been given a Product table whoes all column types are varchar(8000)
One of the column is Price and other is DecimalPosition. Price column includes price without any decimal place and the data in DecimlaPosition column determins where the decimal should be placed.
So for instance, if the Price column includes '1000' and DecimalPosision includes '2' >> then it means that the actual price for this product is '10.00' and NOT '1000'. Similarly, if the DecimalPosision includes '3' >> then it means that the actual price for this product is '1.000' and NOT '1000'My question is that when I am getting the price for a product from this table, how can I get the price in the correct format, e..g like '10.00' and not '1000'Should I use SQL statements to convert 1000 into 10.00 or should I use some sort of programming logic to convert 1000 into 10.00.kind regards

I have started to install a 3rd party web-based product for our clients that uses SQL 2000 as its backend
However every time that they create a new 'topic' within the web app, it creates a new database, with a single table in it!! - There could/will be 1000's of these 'topics' created
I have told the company we buy this from that this is not acceptable - they have asked why!!
Can anyone point me in the direction of preferably a Microsoft document that I can send to them, as just saying 'you just don't do it that way' isn't working and I can't find anything easily myself
Many thanks

I was wondering if it is possible to have a DB table with 1000 columns?
The other way is of course to break these columns into 1000 rows and an ID which tells what exactly does it relate to.
I want to know the pros and cons of having 1000 columns/rows for one set of related data.
The reason to need 1000 columns in the first place is that there are about 1000 questions in a set whose answers need to be saved for one session (hence all should go together).
Can anybody shed some light on it? Has anybody tried something so crazy before?

Ok some company has handed me this .xls file containing a 1000+ users -- their emails (which are to be their user names), and their passwords. Both are in plain text format. I want to add these users to the ASPNET_DB, with the condition that the passwords and userids are encrypted, as they are in the table.
How should I do this?
Thanks very much.

Is it possible/advisable when transfering very large amounts of data from server to server to:
trasnfer the data to a new table first
second alter new table adding indexes, defaults, ets based on original table
if it is what flow item would be used to transfer/alter the indexes and defaults?
I'm very new to ssis so the more detail you can give the better.
Thanks

[crossposted]Hi, I wonder if anyone might lend me a brain.I have a stock database to build that covers over 1000 products, whichmight be said to exist in around 50 product families.Obviously, just to be awkward all the types of stock will havedifferent attributes. So one product might be a tube withinside/outside diameter and length and another a T shaped cable joint.All I can come up with is a separate table for each stock type familyand store the table name and product code in the main stock table, so:Tables:ProdAProdBProdCStockStock attributes:ProdIdProdTableAmountDateetc..ProdA attribute:ProdIdAttributeXAttributeYAttributeZetc..Then use code to parse the table and product ID to select the correctquery to get the product details. BUT This seems awefuly inelegant andpotentially wrong so I'm loathe to continue down this route.Can anyone tell me the "right" way to do this, I feel sure it must bea classic db design exercise, but unfortunatly one they didn't teachus at University -- or maybe I was asleep...Thanks!

Is there a way to change the Open table - Return Top... -1000 defaultto something like 10. It should return only 10 by default? Any registrykeys?

Ok, so I have a primary table that contains the count of a linked table. Since I can let the identity update itself, I should be able to insert the same values into the linked child table.
I need to put the same record in the child table 1000 (that's an arbitrary number, this will be programatically determined by the user) times.
I understand that I can do this:
INSERT INTO SomeTable (Cols) VALUES (vals)
GO 1000
However, I can't make this work when doing an ADO.NET ExecuteCmd. It doesn't like the Go 1000 part of it.
Does anyone have an idea how I can do this VERY QUICKLY without having to execute a separate insert for every item (or batch them)?
The number could be as high as 250,000 in the child table.
Thanks!
