Join Multiple Records Into One Field

May 4, 2006

Is there a way to create one field from multiple records using sql.
For example

Table 1
John 18
Peter 18
David 18

Now I want an sql query that when executed will return a field that
looks like this

Query1
John Peter David

So basically it will return one record with all the name in one field

Concatenate Multiple Records Into One Field

Feb 7, 2007

Someone please help!. I am trying to create a view in SQL Server 2000 to use for a report but I am having problems with concatenating multiple values into one field. In my example below I am trying to list all records in my queried table in columnA then concatenate a list of all other records that share the same value in column B of the queried table into another field. If there are no other matches for a row in columnA then I would leave the corresponding field in columnB blank. Thanks in advance.

TABLE

1.......A
2.......B
3.......C
4.......A
5.......A
6.......B
7.......C
8.......D
9.......C
10......E

EXPECTED OUTPUT
ColumnA ColumnB

4.......1,5
5.......1, 4
6.......2

Concatenating Field For Multiple Records

May 30, 2008

Quick question. What I'm trying to do is concatenate a field for multiple records (hope that is worded in an understandable manner). Here's an example:

ID.....Code
5......33
5......23

ID.....Code...Result
5......33.....33 23
5......23.....33 23

I need the code to get the Result field. I know the code if you were to find the sum, min, max, etc...

(SELECT SUM(CODE)
FROM Table
WHERE ID = Table.ID) AS Result

But I don't know how to write it so it will combine strings.

Multiple Records Tied To Foreign Key Field?

Jun 6, 2008

I'm a total newb to SQL so I apologize if I butcher the description of what I'm looking to do :) Hopefully the example makes more sense. Is it possible for a single record in 1 table to contain relationships to several records in a different table?

What I've got so far is 2 tables - Hardware and Software, with ID Specifying primary keys HardwareID and SoftwareID respectively. the hardware records are for computer details and the software obviously are for programs. What I need to be able to do is pull up a hardware record and be able to see what software is installed on it, and vice versa pull up a software record to see which computers it's installed on. The problem I'm running into is that a computer can have multiple programs installed on it and a program can be installed on multiple computers, so I don't know how to create that relationship to account for that.

What I'd like to see is in the Hardware table a column for SoftwareID that has a foreign key relationship to the SoftwareID field in the Software Table, and vice versa....My question though is is that possible to do and have potentially multiple separate records it links to from that same column field? I might have a computer with say Windows XP Pro, Office 2003 Standard, Adobe Acrobat 8 and a proprietary rate calculator program that i need each to be displayed with their details when I open that computer's record. Or on the software side if I need to see which computers a license is already installed on then I want to make sure I can pull up the full list of computers.

And finally if what I'd like to do isn't possible as I described it...any recommendations for a better way?

Thanks all for the help!

Need Help W/ SELECT From One Table, One Field, Multiple Unique Records

Apr 22, 2006

I'm new to MS SQL and VB. I have a table with one field JOB_NAME containing 20 records. Out of that field I want to retrieve 6 of the 20 records into a pulldown menu. They are all unique text names like so:

Anna Smith
John Doe

etc. I did not see IDs listed for any of the names in the table when I looked.

There is no common denominator to the names that can be filtered in the SELECT statement, and the 6 that I want will need to be pulled out individually.

Is there a way to do this with a SELECT statement? I have not found much information about how to extract unique records out of a single field. Here's the statement I'm using which pulls all of them:

strSQL = "SELECT DISTINCT JOB_NAME AS Names FROM [WORKER_NAMES] WHERE JOB_NAME<>' ' ORDER BY JOB_NAME ASC"

This gives me the total list but I only want to bring back 6 of the 20 for the pulldown.

Is there a way to modify this statement to pull only the records that I want?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Retrieving Multiple Values From One Field In SQL Server For Use In Multiple Columsn In Reports

Mar 30, 2007

I am trying to create a report using Reporting Services.

My problem right now is that the way the table is constructed, I am trying to pull 3 seperate values i.e. One is the number of Hours, One is the type of work, and the 3rd is the Grade, out of one column and place them in 3 seperate columns in the report.

I can currently get one value but how to get the information I need to be able to use in my reports.

So far what I've been working with SQL Reporting Services 2005 I love it and have made several reports, but this one has got me stumped.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I might not have made my problem quite clear enough. My table has one column labeled value. The value in that table is linked through an ID field to another table where the ID's are broken down to one ID =Number of Hours, One ID = Grade and One ID= type of work.

What I'm trying to do is when using these ID's and seperate the value related to those ID's into 3 seperate columns in a query for using in Reporting Services to create the report

As you can see, I'm attempting to change the name of the same column 3 times to reflect the correct information and then link them all to the person, where one person might have several entries in the other fields.

As you can see I can change the names individually in queries and pull the information seperately, it's when roll them altogether is where I'm running into my problem

Thanks for the suggestions that were made, I apoligize for not making the problem clearer.

Here is a copy of what I'm attempting to accomplish. I didn't have it with me last night when posting.

--Pulls the Service Opportunity

SELECT cs.value AS "Service Opportunity"

FROM Cstudent cs

INNER JOIN cattribute ca ON ca.attributeid = cs.attributeid

WHERE ca.name = 'Service Opportunity'

--Pulls the Number of Hours

SELECT cs.value AS 'Number of Hours'

FROM Cstudent cs

INNER JOIN cattribute ca ON ca.attributeid =cs.attributeid

WHERE ca.name ='Num of Hours'

--Pulls the Person Grade Level

SELECT cs.value AS 'Grade'

FROM Cstudent cs

INNER JOIN cattribute ca ON ca.attributeid =cs.attributeid

WHERE ca.name ='Grade'

--Pulls the Person Number, First and Last Name and Grade Level

SELECT s.personnumber, s.lastname, s.firstname, cs.value as "Grade"

FROM student s

INNER JOIN cperson cs ON cs.personid = s.personid

INNER JOIN cattribute ca ON ca.attributeid = cs.attributeid

WHERE cs.value =(SELECT cs.value AS 'Grade'

WHERE ca.attributeid = cs.attributeid AND ca.name='Grade')

Selecting Multiple Records By Multiple Filters...

Aug 13, 2006

Hey all,I am having some serious trouble getting the correct syntax for a select statement to work the way I need it, any help I could get on this would be greatly appreciated.I have a table called Units which stores computers and a table called Software which stores software. I have a bit field in Units called OEM, when this is set to true I don't want the select statement to pull this unit down when I am assigning software to other units. Here is my select statement: SELECT Software.SID, Software.SN, Software.Name, Users.First + ' ' + Users.Last AS 'Assigned User', Units.Make + '-' + Units.Model AS 'Assigned Unit' FROM dbo.Software LEFT JOIN dbo.Units ON Software.SN = Units.SN LEFT JOIN dbo.Users ON Units.UID = Users.UID WHERE (Units.OEM = 'FALSE') AND (Software.SN LIKE '%' + @SearchString + '%')Everything works as expected, unless of course the unit has no software assigned to it yet, it won't return it because its not tied to a Units.OEM field. Is there anyway to have it return ALL records that even arn't joined OR are joined but have OEM set to false? Thanks, let me know if I need to clear anything up.-Matthew

Successive Records With Self Join

Sep 22, 2014

We are using a presence checker to register when our employees show up at work, when they leave and whenever they change their working section.

The raw data has this format:

TABLE
-----

TIMESTAMP USERID SECTION INCIDENCE
------------------------------------------------------
2014-06-27 14:52:40.000 77675669 7 0
2014-06-27 15:08:33.000 77675669 6 8
2014-06-27 15:30:58.000 77675669 7 12
2014-06-27 18:52:00.000 77675669 11 15
2014-06-27 19:47:38.000 77675669 7 12
2014-06-27 23:30:18.000 77675669 7 0

In order to determine the exact time people had been working in the sections I have to match every record with the record of the successive timestamp I do:

SELECT TIMESTAMP as START, USERID, SECTION, INCIDENCE, MIN(TIME_END) as STOP
FROM (
SELECT *, TABLE2.TIMESTAMP as TIME_END
FROM TABLE
LEFT OUTER JOIN TABLE as TABLE2 on TABLE.USERID = TABLE2.USERID and
TABLE2.TIMESTAMP > Table.TIMESTAMP and

[Code] ....

How do I get the incidence of the successive timestamp in my query?

The key trick is that I first do a self join which increases the amount of records, including senseless matches from the first timestamp with the last one of that day. Afterwards I group by all columns of TABLE in order to get only the successive timestamp.

But once I include TABLE2.INCIDENCE in the GROUP BY clause, of course the query stops working correctly.

I can't use the TIMESTAMP isself as it is not singular (there are several terminals in the plant); and I prefer not to use Timestamp in combination with Userid, as the userid is actually not stored directly and has to be retrieved through a couple of joined tables. Any smarter way to include a second column once the successive timestamp has been determined.

How To Show Records With JOIN?

Apr 5, 2007

Hi ,

I've got two tables.. the first table carried a ProductID, and amongst other things a TradePrice

The other tbl carries a ProductID, a IndivPrice and a CustomerID

The second tbl lists prices for products for indiv Customers.

My Query needs to bring back ALL the products from the first tbl...

It also needs to show the TradePrice for that product.

I need to join my query to the second tbl...

And finally, if the second tbl has a price for that product AND the customerID is the same as one I pass into the query.. show that price also..

So here's my first query:

SELECT dbo.Products.ProductID, ProductName, ProductTradePrice, IndivPrice, dbo.Trade_PriceLists.CustomerID AS PLCustomerID FROM dbo.Products LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.Trade_PriceLists ON dbo.Products.ProductID = dbo.Trade_PriceLists.ProductID WHERE (ProductType = 'Trade' OR ProductType = 'Both') AND (Replace(Lower(ProductBrand),' ','') = 'brandname') AND (CustomerID IS NULL OR CustomerID = 'teste' OR CustomerID = '') ORDER BY TradeOrder

I thought that would work, but what happens is that, if that particular customer has no indiv prices set.. then it only shows the ones that have no records at all in that second tbl..

So unless there is a record for a particular product in that second tbl and it doesn't have a CustomerID assigned to (which would never happen as that tbl is only every for indiv customer prices) then it doesn't show.

Examples:

First Tbl

ProductID Name TradePrice

1 Jumper £1.00

2 Jeans £3.00

3 Shoes £5.00

4 Hat £2.00

Second Tbl

ProductID CustomerID IndivPrice

1 teste £0.50

2 othercustomer £2.50

3 teste £4.50

What I want in the results is:

ProductID ProductName TradePrice IndivPrice CustomerID (PLCustomerID)

1 Jumper £1.00 £0.50 teste

2 Jeans £3.00

3 Shoes £5.00 £4.50 teste

4 Hat £2.00

See? - The 2nd product should not get an indiv price as although it's in that second tbl, the customerID assigned to it is different. The 4th product should not get an indiv price as it's not in that second tbl at all.

however, with my query above I'd only get Products 1and 3... and if I did a query on a customer with no indiv prices I'd only get product 4 as it's not in the indiv at all...

HELP!!!!!

SQL Call INNER JOIN Returns Too Many Records

Jan 25, 2006

I have my SQL call:
SELECT     CallLog.CallID, Journal.HEATSeqFROM         CallLog INNER JOIN                      Journal ON CallLog.CallID = Journal.CallID
There are multiple enteries in the Journal table for every entry in the CallLog table, so I receive multiple records:
CallID           HEATSeq00000164     983290904 00000164     983291548 00000164     983295209 00000231     984818271 00000231     985194317 00000231     985280248
I only want to return the LAST record in the Journal table, so the output will be:
CallID           HEATSeq00000164     983295209 00000231     985280248
Can this be done directly in the SQL call?

Help With A Join That Needs To Return Unique Records

Apr 28, 2008

Hi All,

I need a bit of help with a join. I have 2 tables :

TradeSummary
has fields : SymbolID, CurrentPrice, TotalValue

Trades
has fields : SymbolID, TradeID, ExecutionTime, TradeValue

TradeSummary has one entry for each SymbolID, while Trades contains one or more entries per SymbolID

and what I want to retreive is :

For every item in TradeSummary get CurrentPrice, TotalValue from TradeSummary
and also get TradeValue from Trades for the record for max(ExecutionTime)
tables are joined on TradeSummary.SymbolID = Trades.SymbolID

Every attempt of mine so far returns multiple rows for each SymbolID - I want only one row per SymbolID

thanks in advance

SQL 2012 :: Duplicate Records On A Join?

Apr 8, 2014

[URL]

I had a problem before of not been able to find the rows with 0 values. I've now managed this although it's brought up duplicate rows due to the discounts been different on the same Mfr_part_number. I tried using the max function on the isnull (Exhibit_Discount.Discount, 0.00) AS Discount instead but to no success. i think i maybe something to do with PK keys not been used in the set-up of the database.

Use Sales_Builder
Go
SELECT DISTINCT
GBPriceList.[Mfr_Part_Num],

[Code]....
