Joining / Concatenating Fields - Unique Reference?

Jun 13, 2014

I have a simple query which displays items from inventory with their latest annual test date. I want to create another unique reference in my results to use as a certificate number. The number should be a combination of the item+month+year from the test date. What is the easiest way to accomplish this?

My query and my desired results are below:

select item, test_date
from inventory
where cat = 'TELE' and itemised_status > 15

item test_datecert_no

Concatenating Fields In SQL

Apr 11, 2008

I am using SQL server 2000 and trying to do a concatenation of firstname,middle-initial and lastname.
SELECT first_name+('mid_ini'= casewhen middle_init is null then ''when middle_init ='' then ''else middle_initend)+nsl_last_nameFROM tbl_names
How is it possible to use the CASE condition along with concatenating the fields. Is this possible?
I would like my result to be "Bob J Sam".
and if there is no middle initial it should be blank or when its null it should be blank.
I know you can separate and get the results with the CASE statement, but is this feasible when you want to concatenate?
Thank you

Concatenating Fields

Nov 9, 2007

I'm looking for ideas / options for concatenating several fields into one based on a sequence number. The sequence could go as high as 90 but I'm only interested in concatenating the first 3 sequences. I'd like to compare when seq is the same as the id, it's concatenated and placed in a virtual column.

Example:

table x:
column:attritbute
id:123
fname:xyz
lname:zmith
seq:1
address: 123 something
id:123
fname:abc
lname:zmith
address: 123 something
seq:2

Query:
select *
from x
where id = 123

would return 2 records:

ID | Concat | address | fname | lname
123 | abc / xyz | 123 something | xyz | zmith
...

I would like it to return:
ID Concat address
123 | abc / xyz | 123 something ....

Thanks!

Concatenating Text Fields?

Dec 18, 2007

Hi All,

I am trying to get at some text fields from an AS400(JBA) system. the problem i'm having is that for each new line of text on AS400 it creates a new row with a line number associated in the SQL table. When trying to export to excel this causes problems because i need the text in one cell not spread over 15/20 lines.

I need to create a query/function that will concatenate the text lines together. I'm fairly new to T-SQL so could do with some help.

Example:-
ID TxtLn Text

R262965
1
Text 1

R262965
2
Text 2

R262965
3
Text 3

What i'm aiming for is:-
ID ConcatText
R262965 Text1 Text2 Text3

Can anyone please help me or guide me towards a starting point.

Thanks

Concatenating Numeric Fields

Mar 28, 2006

Friends,

I am attempting to concatenate two numeric type fields together with character data and the query is adding them together. I am assuming I need to convert the ints to a string type but would appreciate some info on the best way to do this...I am sure it's something simple but am not finding much on the web about it.

SELECT vehFacID + '-' + vehID AS vehNew FROM Vehicles

Returns the sum of vehFacID & vehID. Doh!

Concatenating Fields With NULL Values

Jul 11, 2006

Hey everyone,

This is probably a very simple question, but I am just stumped. I am storing different name parts in different fields, but I need to create a view that will pull all of those fields together for reports, dropdowns, etc.

Here is my current SELECT statement:

SELECT m.FName + SPACE(1) + m.MName + SPACE(1) + m.LName + ', ' + m.Credentials AS Name,
m.JobTitle,
m.Company,
m.Department,
m.Address,
m.City + ', ' + m.State + ' ' + m.Zipcode AS CSZ,
m.WorkPhone,
m.FAX,
m.Email,
c.Chapter,
m.Active,
s.Sector,
i.Industry
FROM tblMembers m
LEFT OUTER JOIN tblChapters c
ON m.ChapterID = c.ChapterID
LEFT OUTER JOIN tblSectors s
ON m.SectorID = s.SectorID
LEFT OUTER JOIN tblIndustries i
ON m.IndustryID = i.IndustryID
WHERE m.DRGInclude = 1

My problem is that I don't know how to test for NULL values in a field. When you concatenate fields that contain NULL values, the entire contactenated field returns NULL. I am not aware of an IF statement that is available within the SELECT statement.

The first thing I would like to accomplish is to test to see if MName contains NULL. If it does I do not want to include + SPACE(1) + m.MName in the clause. Then, if Credentials contains NULL I do not want to include + ', ' + m.Credentials in the clause.

Can someone tell me what I am missing? Is there a function that I can use for this?

Thanks,

Concatenating Fields Over Multiple Rows

Jul 13, 2007

I have a query that produces seperate rows for people, but I want to combine them into one place. I tried doing this in SQL but apparently it's not very easy in SQL Server. You need to loop through a table using cursors. I'm not quite that advanced with SQL Server and was wondering if there might be an easier way just using SSRS.

In other words I have a table as such:

1 John Smith
2 Jane Doe
3 Matthew Jones

And I'd like to create one textbox that contains the following:

"John Smith, Jane Doe, Matthew Jones"

I've been drawing a blank. Anyone have any ideas?

Auto Scripting SPs, Perhaps Concatenating Text Fields...

Jun 9, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to get the text of all my SPs saved into text (*.sql) files. My first thought was to use sp_helptext and bcp the table to a text file but this isn't working (see my other post) so thought I'd try another method.

I can get the code from syscomment.text and concatenate the varchar(8000) field together in a text field. Unfortunately this isn't as easy as just text = text + newtext, how is this done?

Or am I doing it all comletely the wrong way? BTW, I have over 150 SPs so I can't save them individually.

Thanks!

Nick

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Joining On A Table With Unique Clustered Index

Mar 7, 2015

I have three sprocs and three tables. I was told to use a clustered index in the first table and a unique clustered index on the second table. I never asked about the third table and the person I need to ask is on vacation. Most of the contents of the first table will be joined with all of the contents of the second table into the third table. Do I need to have a unique clustered index on the third table too?

The clustered index in the first sproc is on a unique key that I had created using by concatenating several columns together.

CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX IX_UNIQUE_KEY ON MRP.Margin_Optimization_Data (UNIQUE_KEY);
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_DATE ON MRP.Margin_Optimization_Data (PERIOD);
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_ODS_ID ON MRP.Margin_Optimization_Data
(GL_SEG1_COMPANY_ODS_ID, GL_SEG2_PROFIT_CTR_ODS_ID, GL_SEG3_LOB_ODS_ID, GL_SEG4_PRODUCT_DEPT_ODS_ID, GL_SEG5_ACCOUNT_ODS_ID);

The second sproc with the unique clustered index is on the unique key from the first table and a date attribute.

CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX IX_UNIQUE_KEY ON MRP.[MGN_OPT_KPI_SOURCE] (UNIQUE_KEY, PERIOD);

In the third sproc, I'll have a nonclusted index on the ODS_ID attributes, but I'm unsure of how to go about the clustered index situation.

CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_ODS_ID ON MRP.MGN_OPT_KPI_VALUES
(GL_SEG1_COMPANY_ODS_ID, GL_SEG2_PROFIT_CTR_ODS_ID, GL_SEG3_LOB_ODS_ID, GL_SEG4_PRODUCT_DEPT_ODS_ID, GL_SEG5_ACCOUNT_ODS_ID);

Is this even possible.

I want the user to input values for fields 1 and 2, then in the background combine the two and insert that value in field 3.

Q On Joining Tables With Nullable Fields

Sep 27, 2006

Question.I have a new table that I am adding to a script that I wrote. Thistable has 3 fields, the first 2 fields are used in the on statement asbeing = other fields in the script. The first field always has data in it, but the 2nd field is sometimesnull. So my problem is if both fields have data in them and they both matchto the data in the fields that I am linking them to, then it returnsthe 3rd field without a problem. However if the 2nd field is null thenit is returning a null for the 3rd field. I have checked and the fieldthat I am linking to is null also.So if I haveselect t1.field1, t1.field2, t2.field1, t2.field2, t2.field3from table1 t1join table2 t2on t1.field1=t2.field1 and t1.field2=t2.field2with 2 records in each tabletable1: record1: data, datarecord2: data, nulltable2: record1: data,data,datarecord2: data, null, datawhat I get from the script isrecord1: data, data,data,data,datarecord2: data, null, data, null, nullI would expectrecord2: data, null, data, null, dataI hope this makes sense, I didn't want to post the entire actual scriptas it is about 150 lines long. Thanks in advance.

Joining Two Fields To Single Field

Jun 14, 2006

If I have a database table with the following columns:
ID
Other_ID
Description

And I want to join the two ID fields to one field in another table that contains the following fields:
ID
Name

How would i do that?

Here is some sample data and what I would like returned

TABLE1

ID Other_ID Description
row 1 1 2 Number1
row 2 3 1 Number2

TABLE2

ID Name
row 1 1 John
row 2 2 Bob
row 3 3 Bill

I want to query TABLE1, row 1 so that I pull back the Names for the values stored in the ID and Other_ID fields so that my results are like:
John Bob Number1

The only way around it now is that I store Other_Name in Table1.

Thanks.

JOINing On CHAR Fields Of Different Field Lengths

Nov 30, 2007

Can someone comment on why joining two tables on CHAR fields of different lengths would generate unexpected results?

I had an issue where I ran an update that used an inner join on two tables. The field I used in the join was char(50) in one table and char(13) in another table. The result gave bad matches. After changing the field types both to varchar(30), the problem was eliminate.

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Q: Trigger - Reference To Fields In Inserted ?

Dec 20, 2005

Hi all,
I have a ranking system where I wish to update the ranking every time a result is reported. Performance is no issue what-so-ever. More specifically, two players are to devide their points after each series of games to reflect the fraction of over-all games that each player have won.
I've written the trigger below, but Visual Web Developer 2005 Express (SQL Server 2005 Express) complains about the references to the 'inserted'-table.
I find it very difficult to transform the code below to something that looks like the examples found in documentation.
Could someone get me started in the right direction?
Thanks in advance,
Anders
create trigger result_insert on result
after insert as
begin
declare @won1 as int
declare @won2 as int
declare @oldRank1 as float
declare @oldRank2 as float
declare @oldranksum as float

select @won1 = sum(wongames1) from result where player1 = inserted.player1 and player2=inserted.player2
select @won2 = sum(wongames2) from result where player1 = inserted.player1 and player2=inserted.player2

select @oldrank1 = Rank from RankingInfo where memberid = inserted.playerid1
select @oldrank2 = Rank from RankingInfo where memberid = inserted.playerid2

set @oldranksum = @oldrank1 + @oldrank2

update rankingInfo set Rank = @won1 / ( @won1+@won2) * @oldranksum where memberid = inserted.player1
update rankingInfo set Rank = @won2 / ( @won1+@won2) * @oldranksum where memberid = inserted.player2

Reference Table Fields Via A Subscript

Nov 6, 2007

I need a table of seasonally adjusted forecasts. Each row contains 52 weekly values to been named as needed (e.g. Week01, Week02, etc.). At any point in the year, I want to be able to determine how many weeks I can cover with the product on hand.

I have not been able to envision a set based, normalized solution given there are nearly a million items to be evaluated daily. If I normalize, I'm faced with 52 million rows. It seems to me I'm better off bringing a wide row containing all 52 week buckets into memory and working with them in a stored procedure. And if that's the best solution, how do I reference these "virtual" buckets? I'm thinking of some kind of While() loop that counts the weeks until the inventory is exhaused but I need a subscript based technique to reference each week.

Any thoughts?

Composing A Reference From Fields Located In Mutiple Tables

Jun 12, 2007

Consider a situation. There is a table of submitted 'documents'. They have some attributes. There are assignments to process the things, which have a date they were created. Finally there is a price list which specifies the price according to document features and date, so that the assignment to process a document created at different time will have a different cost. In other words, there is a relation
(assignment->document.attribute(s) + assignment.date) -> pricelist.price

Creating relations has the integrity advantages: it is not possible to create an assignment, which price is not defined in the pricelist; precludes the pricelist entry removal if it is referred by any assignments.

Should a view, which combines all the foreign fields into one virtual table, be created to make establishing the reference possible?

Add Unique Constraint On 3 Fields?

Jul 21, 2015

I want to add a unique constraint on 3 fields, to only allow the value in the field ONE time. The value will NEVER be the same for anything else. This is the table structure

Code:
Create Table Employees
(
P_Id int NOT NULL,
InstructorName varchar(255) NOT NULL,
CourseName varchar(100) NOT NULL,
DataTableName varchar(100) NOT NULL
)

I want to create a unique constraint across the fields Instructorname, CourseName, DataTableName as their is ONLY 1 instructor per course per table so those 3 fields will ALWAYS hold unique values. I think the constraint syntax would go like so, but want to check before I go butchering some sql syntax.

constraint syntax:

Code:
Alter Table Employees
Contstraint uniqueEmployee Unique (InstructorName ,CourseName ,DataTableName )

Duplicate Data For Unique Fields With Different Name?

Oct 25, 2013

I'm designing an app for stock keeping. In my DB, I have a field called "ItemSerialNo" and I made it unique(but not the table's primary key). On my front end, I have a text box for Item Serial No and a combo box loaded with the item brands and also a save button. I know that if I try to save a serial no already existing in my DB, the app won't allow me because of the unique property of the field named "ItemSerialNo". But I want to be able to save a serial no already existing in my DB but with a different brand name.

For example, I want to be able to save information like:

1. ITEM SERIAL NO = 12345
BRAND NAME = AA
2. ITEM SERIAL NO = 12345
BRAND NAME = BB.

Re-populate A Unique Number Into Multiple Fields

Oct 14, 2004

What I need to do is re-populate a unique number into multiple fields,

Let me explain, An employee can appear in the first table only once but can be in the second table multiple times with multiple employee numbers .There is a field called TFN that is unique and we are using it to create a unique id called KRid so what I have done is created 2 tables namely TEST_TBL and TEST2_TBL . In TEST_TBL I am populating a KRid with a unique no being produced by the TFN field only once i.e 12345 being the resulting unique id number. If an employee has 2 employee numbers i.e empno 1 and empno 1000,only employee no 1 will have the unique KRid created but nothing for 1000 because the record already exists , so what has me stumped is that the TFN for employee empno 1 and the TFN for empno 1000 are the same. How do I get the KRid (12345 from empno 1) to populate empno 1000 in TEST2_TBL , The second table has all records in so I can group the second table by TFN id but how do I populate employee 1000 in the second table with the KRid 12345.

Please help!!!!! Below are how the tables are set up and an example of the result.

TABLE 1

if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[TEST_TBL]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)
drop table [dbo].[TEST_TBL]
GO

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TEST_TBL] (
[Empl_Num] [char] (32) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[Surname] [char] (32) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[First_Name] [char] (32) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[Mid_Name] [char] (32) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,

[Hours_Wk] [numeric](18, 2) NULL ,
[KR_ID] [bigint] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[TFN] [char] (32) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL ,
[Date_Term] [datetime] NULL ,
[Empl_Type] [int] NULL ,
[Cost_Centre] [char] (32) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[Empl_Status] [int] NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO

TABLE 2

if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[TEST2_TBL]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)
drop table [dbo].[TEST2_TBL]
GO

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TEST2_TBL] (
[EmpNumber] [char] (32) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL ,
[TFN] [char] (32) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL ,
[KR_ID] [char] (10) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL ,
[EmpStatus] [int] NULL ,
[EmpType] [int] NULL ,
[CommonName] [char] (32) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO

Query goes as follows for table 1:

SELECT NPE000.EmpNumber, NPET00.RecordStatus, NPE000.KR_ID, NPE000.Surname, NPE000.FirstName, NPE000.SecondName, NPE000.Class, NPE000.DateEmployed, NPE000.DateOfBirth, NPE000.HoursPerDay, NPE000.HoursPerWeek, NPE000.PassportNo, NPE000.AwardCode, NPE000.EmailPayslipTo, NPE000.Location, NPE000.Grade, NPE000.DateTerminated, NPE000.EmploymentType, NPE000.DistCode, NPE000.EmpStatus, NPET00.TaxRefNo FROM NPE000 NPE000, NPET00 NPET00 WHERE NPET00.RecordStatus = 0 and NPET00.TaxRefNo <> ' 111111111' and NPET00.TaxRefNo <> ' 000000000' AND LENGTH(NPET00.TaxRefNo) >= 9 AND LENGTH(NPE000.KR_ID) >= 0 AND NPE000.EmpNumber = NPET00.EmpNumber

Query goes as follows for table 2:

SELECT NPE000.EmpNumber, NPE000.FirstName, NPE000.Surname, NPE000.Class, NPE000.Location, NPE000.EmploymentType, NPE000.EmpStatus, NPET00.TaxRefNo, NPE000.Paypoint, NPE000.KR_ID, FROM NPE000, NPET00 WHERE Recordstatus = 0 and (EmploymentType = 1 AND EmpStatus = 1 AND NPE000.EmpNumber = NPET00.EmpNumber

From this you can see that in table 1 it will only create 1 KR_ID for only one employee number but in table 2 I am bringing through all employee records. In table 2 I can group by NPET00.TaxRefNo which will bring all NPET00.TaxRefNo's togeather. From that I would like to populate the other employee numbers with the unique KR_ID.

Example:Table 1

000001,Jackson,James,Sam,7.6,38,12345,475431212

Example:Table 2

000001,Jackson,James,Sam,7.6,38,12345,475431212
001000,Jackson,James,Sam,7.6,38,,475431212

I hope this helps

Thanks in advance

I also have another table called tbl_Notes.  This table contains an unlimited quantity of records for every “num_TicketNumberâ€?.  This table contains the following fields:  num_TicketNumber, str_TechRep, str_Notes, dat_TimeStamp, int_PercentComplete and int_MinutesWorked
I need to add two more fields to the query, but I do not know how to tell the SQL statement how to retrieve the data for the specfic record and inbed the fields into the Dataset being returned from the database to the web page.1) The first field I need is the most current recorded Date field from the tbl_Notes table for the each of the records returned in the above SQL statement.  Similar to:  SELECT TOP (1) dat_TimeStamp FROM tbl_Notes WHERE(num_TicketNumber = xxxx) ORDER BY dat_TimeStamp DESC2) The other field I need to return with the Dataset is the sum of the int_MinutesWorked for each of the tickets being retrieved. Similar to:  SELECT SUM(int_MinutesWorked) AS TotalMinutesFROM tbl_Notes WHERE (num_TicketNumber = 49)

Transact SQL :: Create Unique ID Based On Existing Fields

Sep 1, 2015

I have the following table (Table does not have unique key id )

Last Name     First Name         DATE        Total-Chrg

Jaime               KRiSH           5/1/2015         -4150.66
Jaime               KRiSH           5/1/2015          1043.66
Jaime               KRiSH           5/1/2015          1043.66
Jaime               KRiSH           5/1/2015           4150.66
Jaime               KRiSH           5/3/2015           4150.66
Peter                Jason            5/1/2015           321.02
Peter                Jason            5/1/2015           321.02
Peter                Jason            5/23/2015         123.02

I want the results to be in following way

Uniq ID    Last Name    First Name          DATE         Total-Chrg

1                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015     -4150.66
2                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015     1043.66
2                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015     1043.66
3                Jaime            KRiSH                 5/1/2015      4150.66
4               Jaime             KRiSH                 5/3/2015      4150.66
5               Peter              Jason                5/1/2015       321.02
6               Peter              Jason                5/1/2015       321.02
7               Peter              Jason               5/23/2015     123.02

May be we may do by dense_rank or Row_Number, but I couldn't get the exact query to produce based on the above table values.  There are some duplicates in the table(which are not duplicates as per the Business). For those duplicated Unique ID should be same(Marked in Orange Color which are duplicates).

Already has the following constraint:
PK_Denominatorclustered, unique, primary key located on PRIMARY DenominatorID

How can I add a unique key that will cover the 3 fields --> MemberID,MeasureID,TimePeriodID

I also want to know whether we can include the " WITH ( IGNORE_DUP_KEY=ON ) "
