Keeping DTS Return Messages In A Log Table

Jul 2, 2001

Hi, I am trying to find a way to capture all the status (Start time, execution time, Status messages etc) from executing a DTS package in to a table I will create in a database, does anyone know, where those information being kept?
When I excute the DTS package manually, a window will come up and show the status of each step within the DTS package. I am hoping to capture these information and load it to my log table.

Thanks in advance.

Not Able To Receive Return Messages From Far End...

Apr 27, 2007

Dear all,

I have set up service broker to work between two instances of SQL server with Dialog Security (implemented using certificates). The initiator queue has a activation procedure attached to process the return messages.

I'm receiving the messages from inside a SSIS package using Receive statement. Once I recive the message, I store the conversation handle, message type and message body in variables and execute the remaining ETL package based on the input.

Towards the end of the package, I send a message back to the Initiator for the same conversation to indicate sucess or failure.

Code Snippet

declare @conversation_handle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER

select @conversation_handle = <<SSIS User Variable>>;

SEND ON CONVERSATION @conversation_handle MESSAGE TYPE [/OLAP/Error] (N'<Error>My custom error</Error>');

END CONVERSATION @conversation_handle ;

The problem now is that, the initiator queue receives only the "http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/EndDialog" message. I would expect it to recieve "/OLAP/Error" first and then the "EndDialog" message.

Any idea on what's happening here? Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,

Arun

SQL Server 2012 :: Return Multiple Messages To Client Application?

Jun 9, 2014

I have a procedure where after processing, i am required to send multiple message to calling application.

For ex:

create procedure test as
(@a as int,
@b as int
@c as int )
/*
some transformations */
print 'variable a is' + @a;
print 'variable b is' + @b;
print 'variable c is' + @c;

I am only providing a sample of return messages, but in reality there a lot more messages where a string and a parameter value need to concatenated.Unfortunately print is not allowing to concatenate parameter value.I can use RaiseError, but these messages are not really any error messages.

i tried to concatenate all message and output it using OUT type parameter, but the length of all messages combined exceeds 10000 characters.

Is there any other alternate to send these messages out to application?

Keeping Track Of Table Changes ...

Nov 7, 2001

Hi

We need to keep track of all changes that are made to our tables.

The changes will be saved in a table that records:

- the table in which the change was made
- the name of the field that was changed
- the old data for the field
- the new data for the field etc..

I've seen a few examples that record the name of the table that was
modified but none that record done to the field level.

Can anybody give some guidance?

Thanks..

Keeping A Lock On Table Or Row

Feb 5, 2004

I need to update a row but keep a lock on the table (so no one else can update it) while I do run some more code. In Oracle, it always locks whatever you update until you hit commit, but sql server works opposite. How do I tell it not to commit a statement, or how would I explicitly get a lock and then release it later?

Keeping A Table Moderatley Sized (partitions?)

Jan 29, 2008

Guys,

First off, I'm not very familiar with SQL Server. I need some guidance on what the best path to take is for this as it may not even be table partitions.

I have a huge table (155 million rows) and it's gotten so large than I can't even delete a large set of rows from it (i.e. delete everything older than 6 mo, which would be ~100 million rows). When trying to run a delete like this, it just goes for a LONG time and then just eventually runs out of memory.

The current data in this table can actually be completely cleared out soon (after Feb 1st) and I plan to do this with TRUNCATE TABLE, or just DROP and recreate. Once I do this, I want to create a way to keep this table moderately sized so it never grows that large again and it seems table partitions may be the way to go for this?

I'd like to keep the last 6mo of data in it (I have a datetime column to keep track of this). Anything older I'd like automatically removed. Can I do this with table partitioning? Create 6 partitions that store the 6 most recent months of data and everything older automatically gets dropped off?

If not partitions, what do you suggest to keep this DB modest size?

Thank you.

Keeping A Remote Table Current. Slowly Changing Dimension?? Thank You

Feb 6, 2008

Somebody suggested I use the slowly changing dimension object to keep a table current between servers and databases.

I have two databases servers. One 2000 and the other 2005. I was told because security reasons I should not link them

The two tables are not identical. The destination table only has a handle of the columns and in some cases columns are not the same size.

Once a day. When new rows are introduced in the source table, I'd like to introduce those rows into the destination table. When rows are modified, I'd like to apply changes to the distination table.

I started playing with the slowly changing dimensions object, but am frankly confused connected the dots. Will I have an output oledb object for each command object?

Am i using the right the object for objective?

Are there any good tutorials or videos out there that will cover this?

Thanks for any help or information!

How To Write .net Code To Place XML Messages On Queues And Retrieve XML Messages From Queues.

Apr 2, 2008

Hello, please help!!

I have spent days searching the web and forums for an answer to this simple question and cannot find an example.

I have built a service broker application on sql server 2005. The application puts some xml on an incoming queue which is basically a few parameters to be used in a query. This queue will then call a stored proc which does some business logic and puts the resulting results in another queue also in xml.

I have written a test harness in SQL to put messages on the inbound queue and then some sql to retrieve the returned code from the outbound queue.

What I want to do is be able to convert the SQL which does this into .net code to be used by an application. i.e. write in .net some code to put xml on a queue and then write some .net code to retrieve xml from another queue.

I wouldn't have thought this would be a difficult thing to do and would have been done hundreds of times, but unable to find anything to simply send and retrieve XML to service broker queues....

thanks for your help.. its really needed. I found some links, but they are really vague and often doing select statments in service broker or something like this. I don't want to call any sql, just send and recieve XML on the queues.

any example code that does this, would be really helpfull

kind regards,

Query To Return Records Where One Table Is Void Of Linked Data In Another Table

How Can I Assign Data Returned From A Stored Procedure Into The Return Table Of A Table Valued Function

Apr 18, 2007

Here is the scenario,
I have 2 stored procedures, SP1 and SP2

SP1 has the following code:

declare @tmp as varchar(300)
set @tmp = 'SELECT * FROM
OPENROWSET ( ''SQLOLEDB'', ''SERVER=.;Trusted_Connection=yes'',
''SET FMTONLY OFF EXEC ' + db_name() + '..StoredProcedure'' )'

EXEC (@tmp)

SP2 has the following code:

SELECT *
FROM SP1 (which won't work because SP1 is a stored procedure. A view, a table valued function, or a temporary table must be used for this)

Views - can't use a view because they don't allow dynamic sql and the db_name() in the OPENROWSET function must be used.
Temp Tables - can't use these because it would cause a large hit on system performance due to the frequency SP2 and others like it will be used.
Functions - My last resort is to use a table valued function as shown:

FUNCTION MyFunction
( )
RETURNS @retTable
(
@Field1 int,
@Field2 varchar(50)
)
AS
BEGIN
-- the problem here is that I need to call SP1 and assign it's resulting data into the
-- @retTable variable

-- this statement is incorrect, but it's meaning is my goal
INSERT @retTableSELECT *FROM SP1

RETURN
END

I write the following SQLQuery.sql code for creating a Pivot Table from the Table dbo.LabData by using the PIVOT operator:

USE MyDatabase

GO

USE TABLE dbo.LabData

GO

SELECT AnalyteName, [1] AS MW2, AS MW6S, [11] AS MW7, [16] AS TripBlank

SUM (Concentration)

FOR AnalyteName IN ([1], , [11], [16])

ORDER BY SampleName

GO

I executed the above-mentioned code and I got the following error messages:

Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'TABLE'.

Trying To Return A Single Record For Each Client From Child Table Based Upon A Field Of Date Type In Child Table

Nov 1, 2007

I have table "Clients" who have associated records in table "Mailings"
I want to populate a gridview using a single query that grabs all the info I need so that I may utilize the gridview's built in sorting.
I'm trying to return records containing the next upcoming mailing for each client.

The closest I can get is below:
I'm using GROUP BY because it allows me to return a single record for each client and the MIN part allows me to return the associated record in the mailings table for each client that contains the next upcoming 'send_date'

SELECT MIN(dbo.tbl_clients.client_last_name) AS exp_last_name, MIN(dbo.tbl_mailings.send_date) AS exp_send_date, MIN(dbo.tbl_mailings.user_id) AS exp_user_id, dbo.tbl_clients.client_id, MIN(dbo.tbl_mailings.mailing_id) AS exp_mailing_idFROM dbo.tbl_clients INNER JOIN
dbo.tbl_mailings ON dbo.tbl_clients.client_id = dbo.tbl_mailings.client_idWHERE (dbo.tbl_mailings.user_id = 1000)GROUP BY dbo.tbl_clients.client_id
The user_id set at 1000 part is what makes it rightly pull in all clients for a particular user. Problem is, by using the GROUP BY statement I'm just getting the lowest 'mailing_id' number and NOT the actual entry associated with mailing item I want to return.  Same goes for the last_name field.   Perhaps I need to have a subquery within my WHERE clause?Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely..

Appleby

This way I wont have to as the querry to sort stuff every time I reference this table, this will save lots and lots of overhead. and help keep my clients happy with quick(er) response.

Keeping Database As Small As Possible ?

Oct 16, 2006

Hello everyone,

I have a winform application with C# front end and sql express 05 backend.

In this database i have a table that holds manufacturer provided pricing and the manufacturers we work with update pricing constantly.

We have one table called "manufacturerpricing" which we are constantly inserting and deleting pricing records to/from to keep manufacturer pricing up to date. We may insert and delete as many as 2,000,000 records per month into this table.

This works perfectly fine and we have no problems here at all.

But with that being said, I am worried about the size of the database growing out of control due to temporary space etc. The database just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

How do I run some maintenance to keep the database size under control.

I would like to run this automatically from the C# front end so if ther is a stored proc I can call or an C# assembly I can reference that would be ideal.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Keeping State Between Calls To A UDF

Dec 14, 2006

Hi,

I'd like to keep state between calls to a UDF (mainly for caching purposes). I can shove an object into the appdomain using SetData and read it using GetData, but that requires the assembly to be set to UNSAFE. I'm confident I can secure the DB and the assembly fairly well, but I like defense in depth, and if there's another way to save state between calls to a UDF, I would prefer those.

Is there another way to store state between calls to a UDF, without putting data into DB tables or using things that will require the assembly to have such a wide permission set?

Thanks,

Recomendations For Keeping Track Of Changes

May 8, 2007

Let's say I develop a 'version 1' of a program/database and ship it to some customers.

Then I continue work on version 2 with some databasechanges etc.

When version 2 is shipped to the customers, they need a way to upgrade their database

from version 1 to version 2. I guess this is easiest done with one/several sql-scripts.

What I want is your opinion about the best way to keep track of the changes between

version 1 and 2. Here are two ways with pros and cons I've thought of:

1 - Keep manual track of every change (index, changed columns, relations etc) and update a scriptfile with all changes.

Pros: Full control of what is happening

Cons: Pretty much extra work and risk of missing some changes.

2 - When version 2 is ready, run some third party tool to get a diff between the databases

Pros: Fast and easy

Cons: The DB-changes may need to be applied in a special order, with default values, etc etc and I'm not sure all tools handle this in a good way...?

So... what is your recomendations? I'm sure this must be a headace in every development project?

Regards Andreas
