Keyboard Not Working (backspace And Arrow Keys) When Viewing 2000 DTS Packages From 2005 (backward Compatibility)
May 4, 2006
I know my problem is not directly associated w/ SSIS, so please forgive the post here. I figured this would be the "most" appropriate place to post this challenge.
We're attempting to edit a 2000 DTS package in Design mode from within the 2005 SQL Management Studio. To do this we downloaded/installed the following packages from the MS download site:
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components
We're able to open the package in design mode from the Management Studio (Server > Management > Legacy > Data Transformation Services > DTS Package Name). But, when the DTS designer is open, the backspace and arrow keys won't respond in the Management Studio. They begin responding when we close the DTS designer. There are no error messages when we close the DTS designer.
Does anyone know of a fix or a workaround? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
As our application is going to be closed in few months and for testing purpose
we decided to continue running dts packages in SQL server 2005. As part of upgrade we are migrating all others( Databases, OLAP and Reporting Services). We have created SSAS 2005 cubes which we want to process using Analysis Services 2000 Processing Task in DTS. Is this possible? If not possible, Our organization need a confirmation from a Microsoft manual that it cannot.
The link about backward compatibility describes about using SQL 2005 datasources in DTS and editing Analysis Services Processing Task with SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services installed. However it does not mention anything about support for processing SSAS 2005 cubes with the help of Analysis Services 2000 Processing task. Would you please provide a link which gives a description about this.
Hello all,i'm moving all my development to the new 2005/Fw2 environment. Now, i have an MSSQL 2005 server on the development server. To restore an existing database, i've created a new database with MSSQL 2000 compatibility level, and i've restored the backup over it. Everything seems ok, but when i try to create a diagram, i get the following error message:"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because the database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects."I've checked the properties and there seems to be the right owner (sa). If i create a new database with 2005 compatibility level, everithing works fine.Where is the problem? Also, a side question: by setting compatibility level to 2000, is it correct that the database can be deployed to a 2000 Server environment with no problems? Thanks in advance for any advice. -LV
Not sure if this gets fixed on a restart, but the Backward Compatibility upgrade/piece failed on service pack 1 install for SQL Server 2005. Here is the log output. Anyone experience this?

I get the impression that osql (or somewhere in the sql processing) precompiles the entire script before it executes anything. In particular, this is a problem because it means you can't use IF statements to bracket new features in a script designed to be run on both old and new versions of SQL Server. I'm trying to handle an issue whereby I need to use "CREATE LOGIN" on SQL Server 2005 because I need to set CHECK_POLICY = OFF, and you can't do that with sp_addlogin. However, on SQL Server 2000, while I can't use CREATE LOGIN, I don't need to because the default password policy is such that the password being used does not fail without it (as it does in SQL Server 2005, and is why we need to set CHECK_POLICY), so I can simply use sp_addlogin to create the user w/o a CHEC_POLICY setting.
It appears however, due to the way that SQL is processed, it is impossible to create an SQL script of this nature that will work under both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005. I added code to check the Product Version, and can successfully bracket the code necessary with IF statements, but even though the IF statement would cause the CREATE LOGIN code to not be executed on SQL Server 2000, it errors anyway apparently because it is preparsing the script and of course, SQL Server 2000 doesn't have CREATE LOGIN. Consequently, checking Product Version is useless in this case. It looks like we'll have to do the version check outside of SQL and invoke script A for SQL Server 2000 and script B for SQL Server 2005.
Unless that is, I misunderstand the error I get from SQL Server 2000, or if there's some other way to compatibly do such a conditional. Here's an example script that runs fine under SQL Server 2005:
--------------- declare @ProductVersion as integer set @ProductVersion = cast(left(cast(serverproperty('productversion') as varchar(30)),1) as integer)
print 'Product Version = ' + cast(@ProductVersion as char)
IF @ProductVersion < 9 exec sp_addlogin 'testuser', 'fubar', 'master' IF @ProductVersion > 8 BEGIN CREATE LOGIN testuser WITH PASSWORD = 'fubar', CHECK_POLICY = OFF, DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] END ----------------
On SQL Server 2000, @ProductVersion gets set to 8, but I get the following error:
Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Server TESTSVR, Line 10 Line 10: Incorrect syntax near 'LOGIN'.
Does anyone know if the enhanced data types (character length up to 8,000 bytes for some types) and the increase in the number of tables used in joins are available when using the 65 backward compatibility mode?
We have our custom install code using C# for a huge Client desktop application. We package SQL Express 2005 along with Backward Compatibility pack as this application was using MSDE before and at 11th hour management decided to pack SQL Express and backward compatibility pack.
During installation we want to detect if the Backward compatibility pack is already installed to avoid overwrite. Can anyone suggest how to detect if Backward compatibility pack is already installed using C#? I am sure there should be some registery keys to look for but don't know which.
Hi, pls can anyone help me out with this? I'm installing SQL2005 SP2 over an Itanium machine with W2003 SP2 but it keeps on failing on those features. Client components got installed with no problems. I've installed SQL2005-SP2 over x86 and x64 (not Itanium) machines many times before successfuly. I've been investigating this issue for several days with no luck so I'm a bit clueless at the moment. As I'm using Administrator account I think it is not file permission related. Summary says "Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file".
I am in the process of migrating from Sql Server 2000 to 2005. Part of my plan is to move some database's to 2005, but use the 2000 compatibility mode for the short term. My issue is this, our DR boxes are still on SQL Server 2000, would I still be able to use our log shipping processes? Or would I be better off in starting with migrating the DR boxes to 2005 first?
I€™m having a problem setting up maintenance plans on one of our SQL 2005 servers but first here€™s a bit of back ground.
The server is a Virtual machine running win2k3R2 SP2 server std and SQL 2k5, A supplier arrived to install and app on the server when discovering there app didn€™t work with 2k5 they seem to have set the 2 dbs on the server into 2k compatibility mode and set the entire SQL install to think its a 2000 install. (I€™m not sure how this is done all I can see is the wrong version number in management studio) The problem this is giving me it that the folder in management studio for Database Maintenance Plans is no longer under the management folder instead it under a sub folder called Legacy (which is how management studio seems to deal with all registered 2000 instances) and as such a can no longer right click and create new database maintenance plans is there any way around this or will I have to setup my backup job manually?
I had a view in which I did something like this isnull(fld, val) as 'alias'
when I assign a value to this in the client (vb 6.0) it works ok in sql2000 but fails in 2005. When I change the query to fld as 'alias' then it works ok in sql 2005 . why ?? I still have sql 2000 (8.0) compatability.
Also some queries which are pretty badly written run on sql 2000 but dont run at all in sql 2005 ???
any clues or answers ?? it is some configuration issue ?
Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael
When i open the DTS packages in the Management Studio for editing the DTS packages
I get an error prompt asking me for Installing the Sql Server 2000 Designer Components. I already have the Sql Server 2000 Client tools installed in my machine. Should i still install the designer components...Wont there be a crash in the Client tools side???
We have purchased a new Development SQL Server that is running SQL Server 2005. Our existing Development SQL Server is running SQL 2000.
How can I move the DTS packages from the SQL 2000 server to the new SQL 2005 server? I will be upgrading them to SSIS at some point, but don't have the time now.
I am working on a migration project of my database(lets name it DB1), from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. I have some DTS packages in my SQL 2000 database which also needs to be migrated to SSIS. These DTS packages currently interacts with other database(lets name it DB2) which is also in SQL 2000 and which does the data transmission. The real issue is that the other database(DB2) also has some DTS packages which also communicates with DB1 (the db to be upgraded) and so when i migrate my DB1 to SQL 2005, i will have to change my DB2 packages also (although the change will be minor). Now considering that in future I might also migrate my DB2 to SQL 2005 I wanted to know what will be the right approach to follow. One is to modify the DTS packages of DB2 to accmodate the change in connection and the other is to migrate the DTS packages of DB2 also to SSIS.
I have been tasked with upgrading around 150 SQL Server 2000 DTS packages to SSIS in SQL Server 2005 standard edition. I made a backup of the 2000 database upon which the DTS packages operate and restored it to the SQL 2005 server. So far, so good. I have the database in place. Now I need to get the DTS packages themselves into the SLQ 2005 server. I think I need to check my install and make sure that I have the SQL Server 2000 DTS services installed on the SQL 2005 server. I can do that.
However, I wonder what would be the most effective way to physically get the packages from the SQL 2000 server to the SQL 2005 server. Should I use structured storage files? If so, how do I go about opening them in SQL 2005 in order to save them to SQL server 2005?
I should mention that these packages make heavy use of ActiveX scripting so I am looking at rewriting them from scratch to be SSIS packages. I just need the packages on the SQL Server 2005 box so I can make sure I am creating exactly the same functionality in 2005 as existed in SQL server 2000. Each DTS 2000 individual package tends to be fairly simple and I think I can greatly improve the process by consolidating them.
I have many sql 2000 DTS packages that I support from my development workstation running v2000 sp4. Packages are altered on the development machine and then go through a normal release mechanisms to production via testing servers etc.
I have recently installed the client tools for SQL Server 2005 on my desktop to evaluate the product. The 2005 DB instance is running on a seperate server.
So, I have dev edition of sql 2000 and 2005 client tools (including BI Dev studio etc) on my workstation.
I have recently had to make changes to a 2000 DTS package and used my 2000 enterprise manager to do so. No Problem- saved and tested fine on my workstation.
But when I try and release it to another server, or open the package using enterprise manager from another machine that does not have sql 2005 installed - I get an error message 'Unspecified error'. This I've seen before when trying to open packages created in v2000 , using v7 or where the service packs are different between machines.
Digging around my workstation and comparing some of the DLLs I know to be required to distribute DTS packages (from RDIST.txt) it seems that some of the SQL 2000 dll files have been updated by my 2005 installation.
E.g
DTSFFILE.DLL on my machine is 2000.85.1054.0 whilst on any 'clean' 2000 machine is at version v2000.80.760.0
Surely it cant be right that SQL 2005 has newer versions of components for SQL 2000 than is available with the latest SP for the actual product! Especially considering that the installation of 2005 does not even allow you to edit 2000 DTS packages through the management studio without a 'special' download' of the feature pack,(whihc by the way does not work very well either)
So am I to conclude that you can not run side by side installations of SQL 2000 and 2005 on a single machine and expect 2000 to run as it did previously
We are converted our DTS 2000 packages to Sql Server 2005 SSIS. I am getting following error on my ActiveX script that got converted. I am new to SSIS and DTS. Never ever worked with ActiveX also. So any help would be appreciated. Following is the script followed by error I get:
Below is a migration plan that I've compiled to migrate SQL 2000 DTS packages to SSIS 2005. Once these DTS packages have been migrated i will need to create a job and schedule them in SQL 2005.
I would appreciate and feedback or questions on this migration plan.
Migration DTS 2000 packages to SSIS 2005:
1. Will need to save the current production DTS package as structure storage file. We do not have a UDL file. We set the data connections within each DTS package. 2. Go to Sql 2005 - ManagementLegacyData Transformation Services - right-click and open previous saved structure storage file. 3. Modify the DTS data creditentials to reflect the SQL 2005 connection data. Modify any SQL 2000 MAPI settings to utilize SQL 2005 new database mail. Save the package on SQL 2005. 4. After the modified DTS package has been updated and saved on SQL 2005, save this file as a structure storage file. 5. go to BIDS. Create a new SSIS project. Right-click on SSIS packages and select Migrate DTS 2000 package. This will migrate over the DTS 2000 package with the updated SQL 2005 data creditentails. 6. click on the package properties - protectionlevel and change it to dontsavesensitive. 7. right-click and select package configurations..., select to store data creditentials in xml format. 8. right-click on execute DTS 2000 package task, select Edit... and click on Load DTS2000 package internally. This will embed this task into the new SSIS package. Test the package. Continue if successful. 9. Use SSIS deployment functionality to move the package over to SQL 2005 Integration Services. Right-click on package and select Run Package, if successful, create a job and schedule it to run on SQL 2005 Agent. 10. When creating the Job under SQL Agent, change the Owner: of the job to reflect the owner of the new SSIS package. Schedule the job.
I've just coming up to speed on SSIS 2005. Therefore, this is what i've been able to piece together up to this point and I'm looking for some industry advice/feedback on whether or not this is a good migration plan. I need to provide a migration plan to management by 2/18. Thanks
I am running a SQL Server 2000 enterprise default instance and SQL Server 2005 standard named instances on a machine. I uninstalled the default instance and tried to instance 2005 but was unable to with the error:
'an installation packages for the product Microsoft SQL Server Backward Compatibility cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation packages sqlserver2005_bc.msi'
I have tried to repair the backward compatibility currently installed and have also tried runing the msi file again but it will not install.
I have also put back 2000 as the default instance. then tried to apply sp1 to the 2005 named instances and i cannot do that either. anyone have any ideas?
I'm just moving over one of our databases from SQL2000 to 2005. Everything is working fine, and all web sites are working, however I just can't seem to get xp_cmdshell to function on the 2005 server.
I have enabled xp_cmdshell, and when I run a stored procedure, which writes the contents of one column to a text file, it says "invalid object name". This table is definitely there, and is actually updated earlier on in the same SP, so permissions for that are fine.
This is the line causing the problem (if I take it out, the rest of the SP works no problems):
--write the text file EXEC master.sys.xp_cmdshell 'bcp "SELECT newslettertext FROM mydatabase.dbo.newsletters" queryout D:ewslettertext extbody.txt -U -P -c'
Error = [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid object name 'mydatabase.dbo.newsletters'.
SQLState = 37000, NativeError = 8180 Error = [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Statement(s) could not be prepared. NULL
Could it be to do with permissions on the master.sys.xp_cmdshell? If so, wouldn't it give me a "permission denied" error?
if have a problem with a SELECT query that works very fine on SQL Server 2000 but not on 2005. I've transfered my db by creating a full backup and restoring the db on 2005. The db is working except this problem.
When i start executing it doesn't finish. I waited a couple of minutes. On 2000 it only takes about 6 seconds to run.
Here it is:
Code Snippet
SELECT * FROM PPS_TERMbesttmpwhere PPS_TermBestTmp.BestNr + CONVERT(varchar(30),CAST(REPLACE(PPS_TermBestTmp.Pos1, ',', '.') AS float),2)
NOT IN (SELECT PPS_TermBest.BestNr + CONVERT(varchar(30), PPS_TermBest.Pos1,2) FROM PPS_TermBest) Any ideas?

It was possible to read the transaction log on SQL 6.5 with DBCC LOG and find out what was going on. Is there any way to do this in SQL 7.0/2000 or do you now have to rely on SQL Profiler? I have noticed that SQLProbe has a log viewer in it and would like to know how they did it.
I have moved a database from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 Express. I have modified the structure in 2005 Management Studio Express.
Now I cannot attach to the modified dataabse in SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager. I get "Error 602: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID.... Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes".
This occurs despite the fact that I have kept the database at Compatibiluty Level SQL Server 2000, as reported in 2005 Management Studio Express.
