Kill All The Processes In User Database Before Some Task
Oct 2, 2001
Hi,
I am using SQL Server 7.0. We have set up a task which needs exclusive use of database 'EMS_DB' . How do I schedule a task to run kill all processes in 'EMS_DB' just before this task. Any TSQL scripts for killing all precesses
for a user database?
Thanks in advance,
jfk

I restore a backup every week. It serves a couple of purposes. One, to verify the backup and secondly, to give us a current testing/training environment. As things evolve, it would be nice to script this and then schedule it as a job.
I can write the restore statement, but it fails if any sessions are open on the db. I thought about using sp_who and the the kill statement. But I was having trouble using the recordset returned by sp_who.
Now I'm thinking the sysprocess table is a better place to look. Does anybody have some experience in this area and can point me in the right direction?
While I'm going down this path, does anybody have a script to look at the master database and dynamically manage their backup strategy? That would be super cool?!?!
Thanks,
Alex8675

I have been needing to disconnect users often, before backing up a database or setting it to restricted users.
Each time, I have to go to Current Activity & kill one process at a time. Is there a way, by which I can kill all processes on a database or force out all coonections to it?
Thanks.

Can you kill processes in SQL Server 2K without stopping SQL Server and restarting it? I am using sp_who2 to get a list of active users and I see some accounts that are logged off but still showing up and I am trying to find a way to Kill these accounts and the processes they are doing.

Dear, Our ASP.NET scripts send SQL statements (as inline SQL or SP) to process the requested job. After the job execution, the process ID stays in the server and waits for next command with sleeping status.Since this process does not go away, next job adds another process and eventually, the server is overloaded with these processes and dies. How can I kill this sleeping processes?Regards,Echo

Hello all. I have many connections that are sleeping. I can rightclick, kill, up to 2 at a time. It takes about 20 seconds to kill it.Is that normal? I tried to make a stored procedure to kill them but itate all the power of the server, (all users yelled at me at the sametime :o) )Is this length of time normal for killing these processes?ThanksJeff

So I have a job that shows active processes
INSERT INTO Query_results(login_name, total_elapsed_time, total_elapsed_time)
SELECT login_name, total_elapsed_time, total_elapsed_time FROM
sys.dm_exec_sessions
I need to then kill all sessions at 11:59pm then log all those that are killed. This is so I can schedule a job at that time, I have sessions that are blocking my job.

I have a user who is Business owner of a database that is transactional.
At times some of here staff will be the leadblocker.
She has requested that she be allowed the abiity to KILL spids that are blocking her remaining users. All have blessed this process and I havve been tasked to create a way for this to be accomplished.
Is this as simple as allowing this user a permission or is it more in depth.

Hi,
I have an Execute SQL Task that contains the following line:
kill ?
I have a variable (Spid) that I would like to pass as a parameter.
The connection is OLEDB.
I have tried naming the parameter 0, 1 but to no avail
I have also tried:
kill @spid
and named the parameter @Spid. This also does not work.
The variable contains a value obtained from a query that returns a spid for a locked table and is type INT32.
Can I even use the kill statement in such a context?

Hello:
I am working with an application unde mssql 6.5 ,sp4. We have a separate
database for reporting on a different box. Each night we load a backup into
the database from the production database.
I set up a stored procedure to kill all users connected to this reporting
database just before the load.
THe job looks like this under scheduled tasks as a cmdexec:
isql -U sa -P -d master -Q"exec killusersall_sp 7" -o
F:MSSQLatchjobs
evdb.log
This job died with the following message:
Process Exit Code 1. ...[-b On error batch abort] [-O use Old ISQL
behavior disables the following]<EOF> batch processingAuto console width
scalingWide messagesdefault errorlevel is -1 vs 1 [-? show syntax summary
(this screen)]
The killusersall is paramaterize sp that I pass the dbid of the database
for whom I want all users killed. I need to put the stored procedure in the
master because I egt the spid from sysprocesses.
I do not understand why the job died. Does it matter if I named the stored
procedure as sp_killusersall instead of killusersall_sp which I used.
Can any one advise me about how to get the job to run? Any assistance will
be greatly appreciated. Thanks you.

We have an application running on SQL server. This application restores DB very frequently using Single user mode. Following are the SQLs that are executed to restore the database in single user mode and to get the database back in multi user mode.
alter database [test-db] set single_user with rollback immediate; --This sql is run using test-db
use master;restore database [test-db] from database_snapshot = 'snapshot_test-db';
alter database [test-db] set multi_user;
After switching the test-db to single user mode some 4-5 background processes of Taskmanager jump in for the test-db kicking off the session that application has taken over in single user mode . These background process are deadlocked between them selves.
Please refer to the output of sp_who2 below at link [URL] .... and following is the deadlock XML.
NOTE: SPIDs in deadlock XML may differ from the output of sp_who2 as spids keeps on changing for these processes.
<deadlock-list>
<deadlock victim="process4bbfc78">
<process-list>
<process id="process4bbfc78" taskpriority="0" logused="10000" waitresource="DATABASE: 5 " waittime="705"
[Code] ....
On searching for this problem I found out that people have faced similar problem but I was unable to find out the root cause and debug steps for this problem. Stopping the SQL server is provided as a solution to kick out these background processes but this is not a feasible in our case as code to restore DB runs very frequently resulting in this problem at a good frequency.
I also made sure that SQL Server Agent is not running. The SQL services running on server are SQL server, SQL Server Browser and SQL Server VSS Writer.

Dear all
I created this trigger on a table that i think failed while execution. I tried to modify it and run it again but it seems that i cant do that. If i try and delete the database i also cant - saying that it is still in use. But i am not using it and ther are no other users connected to it. I think the trigger has probably hit a loop and that is holding the link.
To close that i know that a solution would be to restart the SQL server instance but that would be a bit hard since the SQL server where my test database resides is a production server and has few other databases that are important and few users use them.
Is there any way through a SQL statement that there can be forced a delete? Or force close all the connections? Or force close all the processes without actually restarting the SQL server instance.
I have tried all options that were offered on some other forums like forcing it to a single user but even that operation can not be performed saying that the database is still in use.
Thank you so much for all your help and time.
Sincerely
Dan

Hello All,
I’m looking for a solution to timeouts that occur when I’m executing a stored procedure from my web application. Most of the SPs will run from 3 to 15 minutes, and, unfortunately, modifying/optimizing them isn’t an option at the moment. I tried setting the CommandTimeout to 0 with no luck. Unless, I didn’t use it properly. Here’s my code: 1
2 try
3 {
4 string dbConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConStringNTMTLDEV"].ToString();
5 OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection(dbConn);
6
7 lbl_SearchResult.Text = dbConn;
8
9 //OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter();
10 OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SP_CallHistoryLookUp", connection);
11 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
12
13 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@phoneNumber", "1234567890"));
14 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@email", "123@123.com"));
15 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@WebUser", "123"));
16 connection.Open();
17 cmd.CommandTimeout = 0;
18 cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
19 cmd.Dispose();
20 connection.Close();
21 }catch(OleDbException ex)
22 {
23 lbl_SearchResult.Text += "<br/> Something went wrong </br>";
24 lbl_SearchResult.Text += ex.Message.ToString();
25 }

Is it possible to launch a stored procedure and close the connection without waiting for a result?Would the stored procedure still run on the SQL server? I’m using MSSQL 7. Would you have any examples that would solve this problem? Thank you for your help.

I'm trying to kill a bunch of processes in SQL 6.5 and I can't. I'm running the only machine with SQL tools installed on it (the server) and it won't let me kill them. I try the GUI screens and the Kill statement in ISQL_w. Is there any way around this?
I've stopped the SQL Server and rebooted the NT Server. Is there anyway I can get rid of these processes. They are locking some tables and keeping me from inserting data within my code. Very frustrating.
Thanks

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
I would be grateful if you can help me

Hi,
I'm sorry if this is simple, I'm no DBA but have been tasked with solving this problem...
We have a website that connects via ODBC to SQL Server (2k sp1) and at the moment I am getting back about every other time:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
So this is NOT happening every single time. Now I have seen Microsoft KB - 307864 and I can see that none of the databases are marked as suspect, the database I am trying to connect to does exist and is attached and, I have run the command to switch the database to multi-user mode.
The probable cause of this problem is that a while ago we had a hard-drive failure and I was forced to reattach some old datafiles (mdf,ldf) as the database. This seemed ok and I can view data etc in enterprise manager no problem.
I have checked for orphaned users and the user I am logging in with from the webpage is not listed.
So does anyone have a clue as to why this is happening, and more frustratingly for me, why is it only happening some of the time.
Thanks for your help, appreciated.
James.

I've been playing around with building custom components for SSIS. I've been doing workflow for years (using Java and Oracle). The company I worked for had a framework for publishing data that allowed for user interaction. That's something I'd love to be able to do in SSIS.
Is it possible to create a custom task that interacts with the user at runtime? So, the user starts the SSIS package. At some point, the process pops up a dialog (Windows Form) that asks the user to set a date using a calendar control.
Any thoughts?
