Subquery With Multiple Rows Inside SELECT

Hi there,
I need to select rows from a table, but include the top 3 rows of another linked table as a single field in the results.
Here is my basic structure:

Table: Profiles
Fields: Id, ProfileName

Table: Groups
Fields: Id, GroupName, ProfileId

I then need to return something like this:

ProfileName,Groups
"Joe Soap","Group1, Group2, Group3"

Does anyone know how this can be done?

Returning Multiple Rows From 2 Tables

I have two tables and I want to return data from both. Currently my select statement is returning just 1 child record for each parent record and I want to return all child records that match the parent record.

Here's a sample of my tables/data/etc.

t1

speciesid | species
1 | Mammals
2 | Rodents
3 | Reptiles

t2
---------
animalid | animal
3 | Skink
3 | Iguana
3 | Rattlesnake
2 | Meerkat
1 | Hippo
1 | Elk

What I want to do is pull up a list of all the species and under each list all the animals currently listed under that species.

So the result I want should look like:
Mammals (Hippo, Elk)
Reptiles (Skink, Iguana, Rattlesnake)
Rodents (Meerkat)

so currently I have:
SELECT A.animalid, S.speciesid, A.animal, S.species from t2 as A, t1 as S where S.speciesid=A.animalid order by species

this works great, it's just that it only returns one animal instead of all of the animals. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a stored procedure which return a single value and one which return multiple rows between two colums.
In my code for the procedure which returns a single value i use (executescalar) which works fine.
I am not sure what command to use in my code when i am calling the stored procedure that returns multiple rows between colums.

Select DISTINCT On Multiple Columns Is Not Returning Distinct Rows?

Hi, I have the following script segment which is failing:

CREATE TABLE #LatLong (Latitude DECIMAL, Longitude DECIMAL, PRIMARY KEY (Latitude, Longitude))

INSERT INTO #LatLong SELECT DISTINCT Latitude, Longitude FROM RGCcache

When I run it I get the following error: "Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK__#LatLong__________7CE3D9D4'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.#LatLong'."

Im not sure how this is failing as when I try creating another table with 2 decimal columns and repeated values, select distinct only returns distinct pairs of values.

The failure may be related to the fact that RGCcache has about 10 million rows, but I can't see why.

Any ideas?

Subquery Returning More Than One Row

Hi all-

I am stuck writing a stored procedure that will return information about an employee. An employee can have multiple 'designations' such as (CFA, CPA, ASA etc). These are located in a different table which is joined in the select statement. I can return the designations if they have 1 or 0 using a case statement and top 1. But I need to figure out a way to concatenate them together so they will list like: CPA, CFA, ASA.

Their is a EmpDesignation table that lists

empID desID
1 4
2 12
1 12

Their is another table called Employee that lists everything about employee: empID, Firstname, Lastname, title, etc
and 1 more table called Designation that lists DesID, DesignationName

I have got this to work using a cursor, but then I use a temp table and when I try to put that into reporting services it doesnt seem to work, So I am trying to do it all in one select statement.

Any Ideas?

In the Sql below, sample from William Pearson, the amount Spend is in descending order and the Rank number is in ascending order. Like this:

What I wish to accomplish is:

Please let me know what I need to accomplish it.

I've 3 tables COMPANY, COMPANY_SOFTWARES, SOFWARES. COMPANY_SOFTWARES table holds the data of the softwares used in the companies like;

I've used a query like;

But I get an error message;
Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

I've read that in MySQL there is CONCAT function for the result I want but I couldn't find any solution in MSSQL server, any solutions, suggestions?

SQL Server 2008 :: Elegant Way For Returning All Results When Subquery Returns No Results?

I have four tables: Customer (CustomerId INT, CountyId INT), County (CountyId INT), Search(SearchId INT), and SearchCriteria (SearchCriteriaId INT, SearchId INT, CountyId INT, [others not related to this]).

I want to search Customer based off of the Search record, which could have multiple SearchCriteria records. However, if there aren't any SearchCriteria records with CountyId populated for a given Search, I want it to assume to get all Customer records, regardless of CountyId.

Right now, I'm doing it this way.

DECLARE @SearchId INT = 100
SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE
CountyId IN
(
SELECT CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT CountyId FROM SearchCriteria WHERE SearchId = @SearchId)
THEN SearchCriteria.CountyId

This works; it just seems cludgy. Is there a more elegant way to do this?

Top Percent In Subquery Return Various Rows

We are running sql server 2005 standard edition. In the query below, it has top percent clause in the subquery and returns various rows, 2, or 3, or 4 rows each times when running manually one after another. Does anyone have an explaination?

Multiple Column SubQuery

I need to query out multuple rows of data from the following table and retrieve it as a single row.   Ideally, I'd like to do some sort of subquery that supports multiple columns, but as far as I know, that only exists on Oracle, not MSSQL.
Here's an example of the data:UserDefinedFieldId     UserDefinedRowID     FieldValue1                              1                              date (stored as text)2                              1                              text3                              1                              text1                              2                              date (stored as text)2                              2                              text3                              2                              text...27 UserDefinedFieldIds for each row in the actual table
I wrote a working query, but I need something more efficient for this particular application. (The query to do this must fit in a 2000char data field--with all 27columns brought in with separate subqueries, I'm pushing 5000.) Already tried shorter table names, which only saved me about a 1000 characters.

Running The Same Subquery Multiple Times

Hi,

I was wondering if this can be done...

I have a complex query which has to do a few calculations. I'm using subqueries to do the calcs, but most of the calcs have to use a value gotten from the first subquery. I don't want to have to type the subquery out each time, so is there a way of assigning it to a variable or putting it in a UDF or SP?

E.g.
I have a table with 2 cols - amount, date.

SELECT total_amount, closing_amount,
FROM table1
GROUP BY month(date)

Total amount is the SUM(amount) for the month.
Closing amount is the Total Amount plus the amounts for the current month with a few extra calcs.

As I have to use SUM(amount) in the second subquery, is there a way I can do it without having to type hte subquery out again?

This is only a basic example, what I'm trying to do will invovle a lot more calcultions.

Combine Multiple Results Of Subquery

Table users:
userid, name, added...

Table groups
groupid, groupname...

Table groupadmins:
userid, groupid

The users to groups relationship is many-to-many, which is why I created the intermediate table. I would like to return a recordset like:
userid, name, groupids
12344, 'Bob', '123,234,345'

If I try to just select groupid from groupadmins:
select userid, name, (select groupid from groupadmins where groupadmins.userid = users.userid) as groupids from users

then I'll get an error that a subquery is returning multiple results. Some users are not group admins and those that are may have a single or multiple groups. The only thing I can think of is to select the groupids seperately and use a cursor to loop through the results and build a string with the groupids. Then I would select the string with the rest of the fields that I want for return. Is there a better way to do this?

I need to run a select statement that only returns 50 rows. How do I limit the amount of rows returned? Normally the query will return hundreds of rows but all I need is the first 50 it retrieves. I have looked in the BOL and can only find help with a block cursor not just a query.

Is there a way to create a query that will return only 1 row within a join for example:

select a,b,c,d
from tbl1
inner join tbl2 on top 1 tbl2.a = tbl1.a <-- return only the top record here...

I dont have too much of a problem with joins... however I was wondering if there was a mechanism to just specify what would be the top most record from a join clause.

Select Query With Multiple Row Coalesce Subquery

Hey guys, I have a brain buster for you today:

I have a query where I need to select a bunch of rows from one table, hypothetically we'll call them ssn, first name, last name, and I need to select a subquery which coalesces a bunch of rows together (in no case will there be only one row returned from that subquery).

Anyone know how I could go about this? I'll give you an example of what I've tried, but it does not work currently.

delcare @path varchar(255)
select e.ssn,

e.firstname,
e.lastname,
( @path = select coalesce(@path + ', ', '')
from space s1 inner join space s2

on s1.lft BETWEEN s2.lft AND s2.rgt and s1.rgt BETWEEN s2.lft AND s2.rgt

Using that spaceID is guaranteed to give me four rows, and I need them coalesced together, but I can't just use a function (too slow on the scale it would be used), any thoughts?

I have a stored procedure below that returns a table of coaches. It worked before now it does not. It returns nothing, in vistual studio 2005 and on my asp.net webpage. But when I execute it in query analyzer with just SELECT * FROM Coaches it returns the rows. There is no error just will not return what I need. the reason i am tring to do this is so if i can find out the amount of rows before sqldatasource selects for details view then i can make the sqldataesource select depends on total minus 5 so e.g. if total 200 then - 5 so i can select bottom 195 so it misses top 5 for details view any1 any ideas?

Returning All Rows For A Stored Procedure

Hi,

I created a temporary table inside a stored procedure called TmpCursor and the last time I include this..

Select * from #TmpSummary
GO

Inside my web page, I have the following code...

QrySummary = "Exec TmpCursor"
Set rsSummary = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.RecordSet")
rsSummary.Open QrySummary, cnCentral

cnCentral is my sqlconnection string..

This is the error I got when viewing the page

Error Type:
ADODB.Recordset (0x800A0E78)
Operation is not allowed when the object is closed.

BTW, the stored procedure works fine in Query Analyzer.

ExecuteNonQuery Not Returning Rows Affected

I was racking my brains trying to figure out why SomeCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() was not returning any rows...
SQL Server 2005 likes to put the SET NOCOUNT ON statement in every stored procedure you write. By hiding the count of records touched by your query, you also disable the results to be consumed by your application.
So I don't recommend using this statement for your stored procedures and ASP.NET applications, as this functionality is fairly critical for error trapping.
