Hi,
I've read that SQL Server 2005 ED lacks 'enterprise feature support'. What does this mean?

Turn Off Enterprise Features In Developer Edition?

Feb 9, 2007

Hi,

We have 2005 Standard Edition in our production environment and 2005 Developer Edition in dev. Recently we started using a feature in dev only to realize it was an Enterprise specific feature when we wanted to move it to prod. Is there any way to turn off the enterprise features in developer edition so it behaves just like standard edition?

Thanks
Charlie

SQL2005 Enterprise Database Engine Performance Features (versus Standard)

Feb 21, 2007

Can anyone comment on the engine performance difference between SQL2005 Enterprise Edition versus Standard? I'm talking generalized performance of the engine and not admin features (parallel index operations) or scaled-storage (partitioning)

The marketing literature makes note of two things:

Enterprise can use more then 4 processors

Enhanced read-ahead and scan (super scan)
(note: I cannot find anything about this 'feature')
One un-noted Feature:

only Enterprise supports 'lock pages in memory'

We are in the process of migrating from SQL2000 to SQL2005 in an OLTP environment. Based on the marketing literature; I would have chosen SQL2005-standard. But based on our limited testing, we are seeing some strange differences.

Query Performance

With MaxDOP=1 and using a large batch query (select top 1500000); SQL2005-Enterprise is twice as fast as SQL2005-Standard.

(Note: this difference persists regardless of lock-pages-in-memory setting)

CPU Utilization

In addition, taskmgr shows that SQL2005-Enterprise uses a single processor at ~90%. While SQL2005-Standard shows a single processor at ~20%.

Lock Behavior

We are also seeing lock-behavior differences. A single DML statement that attempts to modify ~5000 rows will cause Table-locks on SQL2005-Standard but obtain normal row-locks on SQL2005-Enterprise.

These empirical differences make me wonder if the engine codebase is fundamentally different between the two?

Any insight would be appreciated.

SSIS Features Comparison Between Enterprise Edition And Standard Edition

Apr 17, 2008

I found so many websites wrote that fuzzy grouping ,fuzzy lookup, term extraction, term lookup,Dimension processing destination adapter and Data mining model training destination adapter only available at Enterprise Edition.
Anyway i still can use these components at Standard Edition.
Is that any features different between these two edition for these components? Thanks

Complete Lack Of Database Connectivity

May 9, 2008

A couple of days ago I installed SQL Server 2005 developer. To pave the way for this I removed SQL Server 2000 and 2005 Express. Since then I've been unable to connect from any of my applications or websites in Visual Studio 2005 to either:- my new 2005 Developer database engine- my colleagues 2005 developer database engine. My colleague can connect to my databases from his visual studio on his machine. I am receiving unspecified OleDb errors.Anyone else had this happen? Anyone know where I should start looking? I've uninstalled all .Net frameworks and re-installed 1.1 and 2.0.Many thanks, Sam

Query Problem (lack Of Knowledge On My Part)

Jan 17, 2006

Hello,
I've been trying for a couple of days now with the following problem in SQL
Ive a table called tblRresults that has the following
Date - just a regular date
OfficeLocation - just a unique id such as a zip code
SampleType - contains things like wall, floor, beam
SampleResult - "Detected" or "NotDetected"
When populated the table can look like
12/12/05   99505   Wall   Detected
12/12/05   99505   Wall   NotDetected
10/04/05   99211   Beam   Detected
10/04/05   99211   Beam   Detected
10/04/05   99111   Floor   NotDetected
10/04/05   99111   Floor    NotDetected
What I want is (I guess) a crosstab query that produces the following
Date         Location   SampleType CountDetected   CountNotDetected
12/12/05   99505      Wall                  1                        1
10/04/05   99211      Beam                2                        0 (or null would be ok)
10/04/05   99111      Floor                0                        2
Any help gratefully accepted, this has been driving me mental!
thanks

Workarounds For Lack Of Interoperability Between Framework And Sql Encryption

Mar 2, 2008

1) if our .net app (oltp) is changed to ask sql for encryption (rather than thru .net) on server A, can server B where our wh resides, thru a linked server run an sp remotely on A and get A to provide decryption thru the keys defined there?
2)can the encryption keys etc defined on one server be imported to another server and still behave exactly the same way on the 2nd server as they do on the first? ie decrypt data originally encrypted by the first successfully.

Report Manager Performance (or Lack Thereof ??)

Apr 18, 2007

i am in the process of creating some new reports on a new Reporting Services site

reports developed in VisualStudio2005 pointing an an AnalysisServices Cube on a (development) SQL2005 database

when i Preview the reports in Visual Studio 2005 on my development box, the reports take about 12-15 seconds to run (about 4-5 seconds before the "Report is being generated" logo appears, then another 8-10 seconds before the report appears (report is a series (1-8) of charts))

when i run the same report (with the same report criteria) via the Report Manager (pointing at the same AnalysisServices Cube), it now takes about 45 seconds to run (about 15 -16 seconds before the "Report is being generated" logo appears, then another 30 seconds before the report appears)

(n.b. this is not due to initial Report Manager start-up delays, the timings are for the second and third run of the report)

can anyone out there point me in the direction of where to look ??

Support For SQL Express2005 My Host Provider Does Not Provide Support?

Dec 5, 2005

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site.  Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly.  Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005.  The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?
Regards

Philip

Discontinued Features ???

Sep 14, 1998

Are there any features in 6.5 that have been discontinued in 7.0? I read in Technet that "future versions of SQL Server might not support some statements where the same functionality can be achieved using other means." Technet gave the following examples:

- Device Mirroring
- Outer Join Syntax
- SELECT FOR BROWSE
- Handling of NULLs

I`m curious how our applications will be effected. Will we be making a lot of code changes when we migrate to 7.0?

Advanced Features For DTSs?

Apr 17, 2006

Hi,

Since I am new to DTSs therefore currently I am making my DTSs in a manner where there probably is a room for improvement e.g. When I have to Import data from one server to another I use the Import feature and then I go through all the steps of the wizard (at the end of which I get the option to save my DTS)....

In the DTS "design window" there are many options under the TASK menu option and is there a url from where I can learn how to use these options (under TASK i.e. File Transfer Protocaol task, ActiveX Script Task, Transform Data Task, etc. etc.).

Maybe if I know how to use these options, I might be able to write my DTS in better and flexible manner...

Hope my posts is making some sense????

Thanks

How To Use Web Services And Interactive Features

Dec 26, 2006

I've been having trouble getting my RS2005 reports with interactive features (drilldowns) to work in an Iframe and rendered with SOAP.

The main problem now is that the toggle buttons (+ / -) point to the reporting services server and do a URL Access call. I've tried the <ReplacementRoot> element in the DeviceInfo parameter but it doesn't appear to do anything.

I keep on reading about how everything is possible through the web services but it looks as if these interactive features are only available using the URL Access. Is this true?

Dynamically Creating Features Grid

Mar 17, 2006

I was given what at first seemed a simple task (and maybe it is, but with everything else on my plate, I can't seem to get my head wrapped around this)...create a grid or table something similar to below:
Plan A           Plan B                  PlanC                  PlanD
Item1         yes                yes                        no                        no
Item2         yes                 yes                      no                        no
Item3         yes                  no                     yes                        no
etc.....

The "plans" are stored in one db table, the "items" in another. What I can't seem to get straight in my mind is how to relate the yess and nos and then generate a tabular layout similar to the above.
I don't need anyone to do it for me, but a push in the right direction would sure be nice (using SQL 2005) Thanks!

Workgroup Edition SSIS Features?

May 1, 2006

Hello,

If I have an instance of SQL Server 2005 Workgroup, am I able to run simple ETL packages against it? By simple I mean:

1. Extract data from a comma separated flat file.

2. Load the flat file data to an Access (2002/2003) database.

3. Load the flat file data to a SQL 2005 table.

4. Execution of .dtsx package.

5. Ways to execute a package (i.e. can schedule a package to be run with the SQL Server Agent)?

6. Notification (i.e. SMTP email) on events from package (i.e. on error).

I have been using the Developer Edition, which I know has all/most of the features of Enterprise. How do the SSIS features change between Developer and Workgroup editions?

TIA!!!
