Learning SQL Server With Win XP Home
Feb 9, 2007
How can I practice the use of SQL server without changing my
girlfriends laptop to XP Pro (which anyway I dont have)?
Using (unfortunately) Windows XP Home not Pro, Visual Studio 2005.
Trying to learn SQL server with asp, javascript, vbsrcipt and HTML-
new to this.
Headbutted the wall for a few hours trying to install SQL Server
properly. The long and short is no IIS with Win XP Home so doesnt seem
to work properly. I did manage to connect to Northwinds and publs DB
so can use them to learn but I need to be able to ceate own database.
Ie 3 tables.
For the moment I have created a table in Northwind which I will try to
fill with data
from a notepad file I have...

I wish to start learning about SQL server 2005. Right now I am out of work and wish to build my database skills and get a certification on SQL server 2005. I used SQL 2000 at my last work at an entry level, so I have some experience. I want to get some books and if possible and SQL 2005 on my home computer to learn on. Would SQL server 2005 developer edition be the one I want for learning? I know some books come with a trial software but they only last 180 days, I don't want to feel pressured in trying to learn that quickely since I do have a 1 year old to take care of.I did notice that it was only $50 dollars, which is a plus since I need to watch the money. Does this editoin give me query analyzer and the SQL server enterprise manager? I do have some school background but that was back in 2003 in VB6, Oracle, Java, javascript, HTML.

Hi,I have been trying to register for E-Learning for MS-SQL2005 ... but IE aborts any time before the registration is finished ... (after sign-up, or information fill up, or before those steps): "Microsoft Internet Explorer a rencontré un problème et doit fermer. Nous vous prions de nous excuser pour le désagrément encouru.". I don't believe this working as designed despite this pb shows me that Microsoft has still progressed to make in quality ... (my computer is running W2K and is up to date with Windows Update).Any idea to access knowledge courses on internet for MS-SQL2005 are welcome :) Jean-Marc

Hi group.I have been working with ColdFusion and SQL Server for some timenow....abour 4 years I guess. I have developed various web applicationssuccessfully. The scenario I am in is that a company would like me to comeon with them as a lead database admin type guy. I would still do a little CFdevelopment....but mostly it will be data management with SQL Server.Now....like I said...I have worked with databases for quite awhile...specifically SQL Server, and I am quite comfortable with it......butIm kinda worried that the position involves a lot more than I have done.Mind you I will have first hand knowledge of the database in place which iswhat this position is for....so I have somewhat of an advantage. But....Imjust wondering if I should do a short course that teaches me the ins andouts again. It's like I develop databases by winging it. Know what I mean. Ithink I know what I am doing...but what if I don't? Just wondering what yourthoughts are.

aj writes "Hi.
I'm very interested in learning SQL and SQL Server 2000. I am of above average intelligence, but have no prior programming experience. I am curious as to how long this may take to learn/establish "the basics". I apologize in advance if my question comes off as being foolish.
I've read that you're able to successfully use SQL Server 2000 without prior SQL experience. Is this true?
Ultimately, what would anyone suggest in terms of how to begin the learning (self-teaching) process? What are some good, recommended resources I may use either on-line or purchase, i.e. video tutorials, books, software, etc, etc. Any info or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I've run across an SQL Server 2000 tutorial video online and am considering purchasing it. The demo clips seemed well organized.
I appreciate any advice, suggestions, and recommendations.
Please feel free to email me directly.
Thanks!

I'm pretty familiar with SQL syntax. I am interesting in learning more of admin information.
I've got a lot to learn here and would like some discussion and/or links to helpful sites.
One of the most important things:
I'm trying to understand how the heirachry of groups and users work better. I noticed it is integerated with our active directory from windows server 2000. Is this just becuase of I choose intergrated security when I installed this?
I have many other questions but I would like to try and understand one thing at a time before moving on, so somebody encourage this discussion with me!

I am using the book SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services by Reed Jacobson and Stacia Misner Step by Step.
For building My First Cube, in the Cube Wizard, when the Radio button is checked for "Build the cube without using a data source", the Checkbox for "Use a cube template" is dimmed.
How do you remove the dimming so that the database "Adventure Works Standard Edition" can be entered for providing the template.
I find two files of Adventure Works in Visual Studio 8Microsoft.NET Framework... and three more Adventure Works files in in Visual Studio 8SDK....
Somehow the Adventure Works is not in the right path?
Thanks in advance for some help.

I am a retailer whose software back-end has just been upgraded from Accessto SQL Server 2000. (The front-end is an independently-written shop Point OfSale system)While I know a fair bit about computers, I know nothing about SQL Server. And frankly, I don't want to know much. I don't need to build any newdatabases, program SQL, or "be an administrator". All I need to know aboutis how to go into the raw data like I did in Access and change that data.(The front-end software has some limitations, and I have found it easier inthe past to go into the dB through Access and search-and-replace, andgenerally edit the data as though I was in Excel). What is the easiest and quickest way to learn the skills I need for doingthe same thing under SQL Server 2000?Is there a particular book or site that you could recommend? Is there in fact a tool in existence that mimics Excel in the editing of SQLdata??

Having visited the above Video learning site, I tried the option of Downloading each of several of the videos, in order to play them at leisure, and perhaps, repeatedly.
On clicking the Download buttons, however, the video immediately starts playing in Windows Media Player 11, exactly as if I had clicked on Play the video.
How can I download these videos please?

I'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000. I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource.
Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.

Hello,
I have been working as Sybase DBA for 5+ years, and I would very much like to add MS SQL Server to my resume. Given the common roots of the two RDBMS, it seems that the learning curve would not be as sharp as if I were going to learn Oracle or DB2. Can anyone out there know of any books that are geared toward learning MS SQL Server from a Sybase DBAs perspective?
Thank you,
- Chris Merz

Here is the problem, i'm sure there is quite a bit on google but i'm
not sure what to search for. I want to know how to connect to a
sql server from my home machine using the localhost for testing asp.net
files out. At work the machines will connect fine using
localhost. The server we connect to is in another location.
If someone could get me started on what to search for i would
appreciate it.

Hi All,
I'm trying to run a copy of Enterprise Manager at home. I have a small wireless network and would like to install it on either one machine (stand-alone) or run it on my network.
The machine it is installed on is running Windows 2000 and the remote machine is running Windows XP Home <<< not sure if SQL Server will run on this.
I tried installing it previously as stand-alone on the Win2K machine, but kept getting a "Server not found or access denied" message whenever I tried to register or connect.
Any ideas on how best to set it up at home would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Hi
I am new to SQL / SQL Server and have downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express.
I also appear to have an existing SQL Server program on my PC which includes Query Analyzer. I wish to use Query Analyzer. Is this compatible with SQL Express?
When I try to open Query Analyzer using Windows Authentication I get the error msg:
'Unable to connect to server HOME-DHGV3DIC8N:
Server: msg 17, level 16, state 1
[Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] [Shared memory] SQL Server does not exist or access denied.'
I am guessing that I need to create some sort of server which I can use to run SQL server.
Could anyone let me know how I do this? And also if I will be able to run Query analyzer on SQL Express edition.
I'd be really greatful
Regards
Mark

I am new to servers and when I try to learn about them I get confused, because the information does not list a server in XP, but they keep it separate from Microsoft SQL Server, like XP has it's own server. Can someone help clarify for me what the versions of SQL servers are?
SQL 2000 1.0, SQL 2002, SQL 2003........?

I installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise trial on Vista Home Premium. In the process of trying to get SQL Server Management Studio installed I ended up removing everything. Now when I try to install any tool, service, or database of SQL Server 2005 (Enterprise or SQLExpress) the install fails and says that a newer version is already installed but nothing is installed. Rollback my restore points fails too. Seems like I need to clean up the registry somehow????

I have my SQL Server installation on drive c: and the databases on anotherdrive. My c drive got corrupted and I am planning to restore it from an oldbackup. This means drive c will not be up to date.Is there anything that SQL Server saves in the registry or in its homefolder that changes frequently? I am hoping that nothing does which meansthe old backup will be good enough.Although I think the default databases are in the c drive, I will try toget them back from a recent backup.John Dalberg

My target market includes Micro-SMEs (i.e. 1 to 2 person business). This users often have multiple computers, but tend to run XP Home edition. Hence I need to set up a SQL Server Express on one of the machines and allow the other machines to access it.
So far I realise:
XP machines must be SP2ed (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=379560&SiteID=1)
XP Home machines need to be in the same work group (am I right?)
I have to Open up the MS Firewall on each of the machines for TCP ports 1433 and 1434 (see http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=511441&SiteID=1)
On the machine hosting the SQL Server Express instance, start the "Browser" Service (again http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=511441&SiteID=1)
I have several questions surrounding this.....
If I package SQL Express with my application is there away I can get the Browser to be started automatically? Do I need to write some custom code using the Microsoft.SqlServer.Management namespace?
My understanding of the SQL Server security model is that ideally I should ideally use Windows Authenticated users connections - how do I set up the remote XP Home user on the XP Home machine which is hosting the SQL Server Instance? I'm thing I may have to used Mixed Mode and pass the SQL Server username and password in the connection string. Am I right or can I use Windows Authenticated?
Are there any more resources other than http://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnsse/html/emsqlexcustapp.asp which I should look at for help on installing an app bound to SQL Server Express?
Thanks in advance

I am trying to install SQL Express on Window Home XP and SCC is returning the following error:
The SQL Server Configuration Checker cannot b execute due to WMI configuration on the machine ..... Error 2147942405 (0X80070005).

IIS Feature Requirement
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online.
I already configure IIS7 with all feature, but system still generate above mentioned message.
