License Information And Db Capacity

Mar 27, 2007

hello,

I just completed my graduation and eventually i got a proposal from a company to develop a software for database management. I have some doubts about licensing the back-end database. My doubts are:

1. If I'm using Sql Server as the backend and the .sql file placed on the server where this .sql file will be accessed by about 20 clients, will the customer (company) have to purchase a license for the sql server? If yes, how this can be done? Does the company have to purchase a license for each client and server for accessing contents of the .sql file? Actually, there will be only 1 server and abt 20 clients.

2. Does the developer need to purchase a seperate license for distributing the .sql file?

3. Also, wat is the maximum capacity of an sql database size? I'm asking this because as per my requirements, the company will be using the database at a rate of 1GB per month. So, by end of a year, it will be 12 GB.

NOTE: No Sql Server Software will be installed on client machines.

In brief, my doubt is: Do we need license for reading and writting to .mdb or .sql file contents and do we need seperate license for distributing them?

Please, somebody can help me for the licensing information and also for the database size?

Thank you.

SQL Server 2000 To SS05 - License Upgrade

Jan 21, 2008

Hi,

We have a product which uses SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition with Per Seat licensing option. Going forward with a new release of the product, we intend to upgrade to SQL Server 2005. Till now our product was being used in non web based scenarios so the Per Seat licensing option helped our case. In the upcoming release which would use SQL Server 2005 we need to break off from the non web based scenario as the product would use SQL Server over internet.
So isn't it correct to go for the Processor based licensing instead of the Per seat licensing ?

If so then what would be the ideal manner to upgrade the license from Per Seat (in SQL Server 2000) license type to Processor based (in SQL Server 2005) license type ?

I have heard of Software Assurance providing assistance in version upgrades. Would it help in case I need to upgrade from one license type to another ? Or is it applicable only in case of upgrade where the license type is fixed ?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Arun

Best Practice? SQL 2000 And 2005 On Same Server

Aug 28, 2006

(I tried to search for answers before posting, but had difficulty)

I have read in Microsoft forums that you "can" install SQL 2005 as an instance on a SQL 2000 server (not clustered.)

My decade+ of experience tells me it would be a bad idea, I'd expect the next service pack to fail or some other un-expected result. This is for a high availability application where the vendor requires SQL2000, and our custom coders want to use some SQL2005 featuers.

Does anyone have experience with two instances of different versions in a high visibility production system?

Does anyone have some points I could use to argue against this other than me sounding paranoid.

Thanks!

Query Analyser 2000 Vs 7.0

ISTR QA running in 7.0 would return print statements and messages as thequery ran (well, after a "GO" statement anyway). In 2000 it doesn't returnany messages until after the entire query batch has completed. In wanting tokeep an eye on progress on long batches, how can I make 2000 work more like7.0 in this respect?

Using Query Analyser 2000 With SQL 2005

Dec 21, 2005

Hi,

We are currently trying to get to grips with SQL Server 2005, and have a basic question. Is it possible to user Query Analyser from SQL 2000 with 2005? All our support staff use Query Analyser on a day to ay basis and all our clients are currently on SQL Server 2000. It would be usefull if when new customers come on line with 2005 our staff can use one tool to perform their tasks

We've tried to run Query Anayser and it's comming up with a connection error, this may be down to us not setting some access up or not connecting correctly.

Thanks in advance

Sql 2000 Price && License Puzzle...

SQL 2000 pricing and licensing is quite confusing, and even more pain including the upgrading pricing from sql6.5/sql7.0.

I got very clear Windows2000 pricing and upgrading from one Microsoft web address. But just could not find a ONE Microsoft web sit explicitely describe the $ pricing for each of SQL2000 edition (per processor vs. CAL..., including upgrading from SQL 6.5, SQL 7.0). May be I missed that site?

Query Analyser Without SQL Server Name

Jun 3, 2004

Hi,

I am studying SQL Server by myself (I am a Sybase DBA) and I have a little problem with the Query Analyser.

I actually have 2 server in my PC (XP) and I can see them via SQL Server Enterprise Manager, I also can open Query Analyser for these two server via Enterprise Manager.

When I try to launch SQL Query Analyser from the start menu, I can't see any of my two server and can't chose a connection.

Do I need to write some parameter somewhere?

It's not a big problem as I can work via Enterprise Manager but I just want to know.

Thank you for your response.

SQL Server Per Processor License

Jul 20, 2004

If I install an instance of SQL Server on a box with 4 processors but specify in the licensing part of the installation procedure that it's a '2 processor license', does that really mean that SQL Server will only use 2 of the 4 processors? I ask because, having done this, if I check the SQL Server instance's properties, on the Processors tab, there are 4 processors ticked - giving the impression that 4 processors are being used by this SQL Server instance. Can anyone throw some light on this?

Another question... If I wish to reconfigure the same SQL Server instance from a 2 to a 4 processor 'per processor' license, how can this be done?
