Limiting User Resource Consumption At The Instance Level
Oct 9, 2007
We are planning a shared SQL Server 2005 enviroment where users can create databases/applications for themselves and/or departments. With the consideration that there can be multiple SQL Servers on a box, can each instance limit a user's disk space? Thanks for any enlightenment.
I got a task to get resource consumption (CPU, storage etc.) for stored procedures in certain database. I found nice script ([dbo].[usp_Worst_TSQL]) but looks like script written for SQL 2005 and we use SQL 2012.how to get resource consumption details.
Below query tells us if guest user is enabled or disabled in a particular database
SELECT dp.name, CASE perms.class WHEN 0 THEN 'Yes' ELSE 'No' END AS 'Enabled' FROM sys.database_principals dp LEFT JOIN (SELECT grantee_principal_id, class FROM sys.database_permissions WHERE class = 0 AND type = 'CO' AND state = 'G') AS perms ON dp.principal_id = perms.grantee_principal_id WHERE dp.name = 'guest';
Do we have a query which can also add the database name to above query output? The output must have columns with data against Name,Enabled,Database name
but after the assignment the LocalConnectionString is different from ConnectionStringWithoutCredentials, there are much more ssce parameters.
What I don't understand is:
why I'm getting this error even after closing the connection ?
Since the error report [32] the ssce conflicting parameters shoud be AUTO_SHRINK_THRESHOLD, FLUSH_INTERVAL and MAX_DATABASE_SIZE
I tried to cut & paste the same values from LocalConnectionString into app.config connection string, at first It seemed to work, but now I got the same error.
Got windows Vista Business edition, installed Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express SP2, SQL Server Management Studio SP1 in that order. I was developing in VWD express without problems using WinXP but now on Vista Business, the local connection to SQL server appears to be a problem. I know there's nothing wrong with my web.config or anything like that as it was working perfectly prior to running under Vista. If i specify the database on the live website, it works fine. If I specify the test database in app_data folder, I get the following exception:-
Server Error in '/UKSD' Application.

I am taking a guess it's somerthing to do with access issues, but can't find anything out on searching the forums etc.. I am setup as an administrator, running VWD as an administrator and for the record, SQL Server Management Studio express works fine. Another small issue, when I run the application from VWD, I always have to minimise the application and restore it as the graphics get corrupt. Please help!! I cannot debug when running of the live website.
As a starter i tried to modify and translate the Personal Website Starters kit from the VS2005Team SDK.
When i'm working on the machine were it's installed , under debugging, all works great.
But when i try to develop from my laptop, via RDP on the develop machine, i've got this message and can not debug (connect to the SQLxpres Server)
Does anybody now a solution ?? Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

I am new in .NET development and currently trying to learn VWB through Microsoft online tutorials.
Here is the problem that prevents me from getting further:
in VWB, when you right click App_Data and chose "Add New Item" and then select SQL database, the following error message is displayed:
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed."
If I cancel out of it, it does generate mdf file under App_Data folder in Solution Explorer, but when I try to open it, it says:
"The item does not exist in the Web directory. t may have been moved, renamed or deleted." and that is where the whole sharade deadends.
I can connect via mycomputersqlexpress under Data Connections in Database Explorer (it then adds "master.dbo" to the path) and then create custom tables, but that is not the same, isn't it? I mean, this will not integrate my database tables through default configuration that I am trying to follow?
when I try to connect to an mdf as a power user, --------------------------- Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition --------------------------- Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed. --------------------------- OK ---------------------------
I was able to do do this before until Saturady when I had to re-install sql server, and express etc due to some system problem on my xp Pro PC. What have I misconfigured?
I do see the service SQL Serer(SQLEXPRESS) started under Network Service and SQL Serfver(MSSQLSERVER) started under local system.
My power user ID does have modify access to the sql 90 database folders. and to the mdf.
No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for free. It€™s not worth anything. I am very disappointed in this version of SQL server. I decided to start learning VB so I downloaded and installed VB 2005 express edition and SQL 2005 express. I tried to build a personal website using the starter kit. I kept getting the following error message, for which I have seen numerous postings on this forum. €śFailed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.€? I went out and bought the Standard version of VS 2005 thinking there may be a feature that the free express version is lacking. I uninstalled the express version, cleaned the registry, deleted all the folders it created and installed the Standard edition. Then I tried to create a personal web using the starter kit and it does the same thing again. I can not create a database file, connect to a database file. I can not create or attach a database on the SQL 2005 express from VS 2005. The SQL server Express seems to be working OK since I can attach to it using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. There is something about the way VS tries to connect to the database server that is not working. VB does recognize the local computer as a SQL server but can not connect to it. SQL server is set to accept Shared memory, TCP/IP and named pipes for local clients. What is causing this? This is some information on the system I am using:
MS XP (SP2)
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200) Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727 Installed Edition: Standard
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.1399.00 Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0 Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42 Operating System 5.1.2600
I am now to programming but nor computer illiterate. I have been working with MS SQL servers since version 6.5 and have MCSE, Network+, A+ and Security plus certifications. Installing and using VS should not be this problematic. What is wrong with Microsoft?

How to get Instance wise CPU resource utilization report in sql server 2012? I have 2 sql server instance INST1 and INST2 running in window server 2012.I want report like this
We have two instances of SQL Server 2005 - SP1 installed on one server. The default instance starts very slowly. When looking at the log I can see the delay is due to Resource Manager based upon the following error.
Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). Plz enlighten me on this. Thanks and Regards,Sankar.
This is my first time to deploy an asp.net2 web site. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed" (only in pages that try to access the database) Help pleaseee
I work for a central IT facility which provides services to all the departments in the organisation. Management are proposing to extend the current database hosting service to a full blown DBA service as well. The role is to be split between the hosting team, who had also been providing high level functions like replication, and a dba team who will take on the database administration. There is to be a strict delineation of responsibilities with the hosting team looking after everything at the instance level and the database team managing the databases. The hosting team will retain the sysadmin role and grant sql permissions to the database team as and when they need them.
I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express.
Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well.
As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message.
For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user.
I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that.
I have designed an XML schema in which defines the data structures expected in an xml file that our software will import. This is used to validate the files. The current problem is that the validation passes any correctly formatted xml file that does not contain any of our data structures. Is it possible to put something in the schema that says that at least one instance of our toplevel datatype must be included in the file?. I know using minOccurs="1" but I can only see how to use with a definition of a datatype - not the xml file itself.
I have received an alert on a server that is running SQL 2005. 'The service pack level of SQL instance is not upto date'.
I have right clicked the connection properties and found that current version is 9.00.1399.06 How can I tell which Service pack the SQL 2005 is currently on?
Do you know of any articles to upgrade service packs?
Hi all hope some one can help - please bear with me new to this Basically I have had to change pc's so I copied and pasted my ASPNET.MDF and LDF from my old pc to new PC including webpages/apps etc.. created. However now all I get is "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path """" Just don't understand what permissions the db should have, does it need to match the SQL Express owner...
I installed my asp.net 2.0 web application and sql express june editon on my windows 2003 server. When the application tries to reach the database i am getting the following error"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). This one has SQL express April edition though.
How you are handling the replication of the many instance-level objects/items (logins, linked servers, server roles, database mail, operators, on and on) to the replicas in an AlwaysOn topology.
I'm especially curious about DBAs managing larger SQL Server environments. In my current environment, we have approximately 80 production SQL instances containing about 650 databases that require high availability and disaster recovery.
We use mirroring today and have a solid, home-grown solution for replicating the instance-level items from production to disaster recovery. AlwaysOn changes things a bit since we'll have multiple replicas and of course the database could be active on any one of those at any time. So my concern is about instance-level items being created in one instance but never deployed to the other instances participating in the AG group.
HiI need to set security for row level but not based on Database user'slogin. It should be based on the user table login. For the particularuser I need to allow only the particular records to access insert, update delete and select.Let me explain clearlyFor example think we are using asp/asp.net websiteEg:www.test.comSo take this is our website and if you try this URL then you will get awindow for Login name and password. For example the Login name is windows user name (Here windows usermeans server windows user and not client) and windows password. So ifyou have login user id you can able to login in our site and we haveanother check. We have our own usertable this table consist all theuser login names and user rights. We will check the windows user whologin in our site has rights in the usertable I mean he is present inthe usertable if he is not present then we will display a message youhave no rights to access this site.If he has login id in our usertable then he allowed viewing ourpages. Still if he has the login id we will check the user who loginhas how much right to access to each page and the records of each tableits all depend on the user rights. So, here I need the row level security. For each and every table weneed to check the corresponding user and executing the record producelot of business logic problem for us.So after the user login we need automatically to set row levelsecurity for all the tables. Based on the user who login. So from there if we try select * from <tablename> then we can only ableto get the allowed records to select, insert, update, delete. Please can some one help how to solve this?Note:For some help you can refer the below URL (See in that they only givenabout the row level and column level security for each database usersnot for our required concept)http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...5/multisec.mspxThanks in advanceRams
I'm getting a specific error when i try to run a .sql script for a Custom TableProfile from the Asp.net site, when i Parse the .sql file Commands execute perfectly. But when i actually "Execute" the .sql script i get the following errors::

We've devoted a resource to this today, but I have to believe it's something easy that we're overlooking. The scneario is that we have a production Web application that until last weekend had a SQL 2000 back end. This weekend we installed a new instance of SQL 2005 and everything works (we tested in a sandbox environment, but someone must not have load tested enough) and never saw these exceptions. So, after the upgrade we now receive 100's of thexe SQL excptions per day:A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)Does anyone know what we've overlooked that's causing this issue? Thanks for any help!
To allow users enter chinese character into table, I did try to change the field type to nchar and this is workable. But I have few hundred tables.. Is there anyway to change the setting in easier way? by instead change the field type one by one for each table?
I tried change the collation to Chinese_PRC_90_BIN for the database, but it is not support chinese input..
