Sql Server 2005 Vs Express Size Limits
Feb 28, 2006I've been developing a vb app with sql server 2005 and had planned to use express as the client server so the db could be distributed with the app. After importing 21 csv text files, I realized that I have way too much data. My understanding is that sqlexpress can only work with max 4gb database.
The 21 csv files (total 925mb) brought the db size up to 1.5gb and I still have at least 250 more files to go. Obviously, I need a different approach. What are the size limitations of the non express version of sql server 2005? Any suggestions on the best approach for this type of situation?

I know that SQL2005 Express has 1 GB memory limitation.
Well, if my server has 2 GB RAM and I have other applications (without memory constraints) how does this relate to the SQL constraints ?
Can I still run SQL2005 Express if other applications exaust only 1 GigaByte of memory ?

SQL 2005 Performance Limits

I am migrating a data warehouse from SQL 2000 to 2005. So far, I have been able to convert all DTS's on the old server and most tables and users. I am having problems with some of my views, though. A view which involves over 5 tables, and some sub-views of those tables runs perfectly on SQL 2000, but on 2005 I get a Query Timed out Message. A typical run of this view can return from 200-1000 records. My guess is that it gets stuck somewhere in the subviews it has to run. So I wonder, what are the limitations of SQL 2005 concerning Queries and sub-queries (how many subqueries can a query have without timing out?). I mean, I would expect 2005 to have more processing capacity than SQL 2000 (on which this query runs perfectly). I have run some queries which don't run on 2000 but do run on 2005 and return over 4000 records.
Or is there some setting I haven't adjusted, like the time it takes for a query to time out? How would I adjust this, then?

SQL 2005 Mobile Merge Replication Size Limits?
Feb 8, 2006I am in the process of testing a SQL 2005 Std x64 server with merge replication using Windows Mobile 5.0 clients and SQL 2005 Mobile. The test DB is a copy of the currently active DB, but has been expanded to include some new tables to support planned application functionality extensions.
Once the publication exceeds 97 Articles, the error is thrown that "The buffer pool is too small or there are too many open cursors". If I drop one article everything is fine. I ran a test with dummy DB that had 100 blank tables, and this initialized just fine on the client. The additional articles I am publishing (the 98th table) is also empty, but it throws the error anyway.
Is there a limit on the total size/number of changes that can be sent? Since I have run tests sending over 64,000 changes to a client during initialization this does not seem to be the case (I am only attempting a little more than 9,700 changes on this initialization).
Some other ideas that have been tested without success are to stop the user triggers from propagating, and toggling the AWE setting for SQL. The Replication Monitor does say the client completes replication, and it seems to choke at the very end of completing replication when it attempts to write to the tracking tables. The last successful action is sys.sp_MSadd_merge_history90, and it appears to be acting on the last table added to the publication.
There does not appear to be a limit on the number or articles, since I can publish more articles in a dummy DB than I am able here, so it seems to be something to do with size. Any information would be helpful, this is a very frustrating issue. Thanks!

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

I want to make a component library in Visual Basic.NET and connect to a remote Sql Server. When I create a new DataSet with the wizard, I can only connect to a .mdf file, but not to a Sql Server. With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ?

May 15, 2001Im curious about how much data SQL Server 2000 can handle. Where does SQL Server stand today comparing to Oracle? It would be interesting to hear views and experiences from people here on swynk on SQL Server 2000. How big are the biggest tables, how many rows and speed etc. When is it time to consider using Oracle, if ever, instead of SQL Server 2000?

LIMITs On MIRROR With SQL Server SE
Jul 2, 2007Hi folks. I'm trying to clear up some licensing confusion I"ve come across. First, if I use MIRROR on SS SE I am limited to a single REDO thread and Sycn mode. I see that on the Web. Will the singel REDO thread hurt the ability for the Secondary to keep up? Any one done any tests?
My confusion comes from a document that came across my desk a long time ago that showed that if you use MIRROR on SQL Server SE you are limited to 4 processors for the entire cluster. So if you wanted a balanced failover you would have to have two 2-ways in essence. Is this true? Is it not longer true? I can't seem to find any mention of this....did someone give me bad advice? Help! Thanks.

Stretching The Limits Of Triggers In SQL Server

For my first foray into this forum I have a tricky one....
We have a table in our database called tblJob with two columns:
id IDENTITITY(1,1)
jobNbr VARCHAR (5) (This would be, for example '12323')
When a new job is created (i.e. job Number 12323), the client wants a trigger on this table that creates a new table called tblJobData12323.
Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

I do not know how to make this kind of remote connection in my Network. Please help and advise.

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",

I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express
Sep 28, 2006Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

Troubleshooting tips:
Store application data in isolated storage.
When deploying an Office solution, check to make sure you have fulfilled all necessary requirments.
Use a certificate to obtain the required permission(s).
If an assembly implementing the custom security references other assemblies, add the referenced assemblies to the full trust assembly list.
Get general help for the exception.

May 7, 2008Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express?The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?

To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. Can't Connect To SQL 2005 Express With SQL Server Management Studio Express
Mar 10, 2006I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.

Unable To Re-install SQL Server 2005 Express And Also SQL Express Toolkit

I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.

I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
