Linked SQL 2000 Database

Apr 26, 2008

Hi,

We have a Webshop that is very old and we can't change the SQL server that it access.
But we had to upgrade the MS SQL server to a new hardware so we now have two SQL 2000 servers (the old one and the new one). All relevant data is on the new one but the webshop ONLY read from the old one)

How can I link the database on the old server soit can read and write to teh database on the new server.
What I mean is that I want the webserver to access the old SQL server (with a linked database to the new SQL server) so all data on the old database is the new database.

Is this possible and in that case how?

Both SQL servers are SQL 2000 (old one SP3 and new one SP4) Its no problem to upgrade the old one to SP4 aswell.

Linked Server Problem From SQL 2005 To SQL 2000 Database

May 8, 2006

I have been unable to get my linked server to work when running queries against it in SQL Server 2005.

Example SQL Statement on my SQL 2005 server that I'm trying to run:

select top 100 * from [linkedservername].databsename.dbo.tablename

Error Message:

Msg 7416, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists.

Print screen of the security properties of my SQL 2005 Linked Server:

The user sqladmin definitely has the right permissions to the right databases on the target linked server.

DB Engine :: How To Point Linked Server To Specific Database / Rename Linked Server

Apr 24, 2015

I am using Linked Server in SQL Server 2008R2 connecting to a couple of Linked Servers.

I was able to connect Linked Servers, but I cannot point to a specific database in a Linked Server, also, I cannot rename Linked Server's name.

How to point the linked server to a specific database? How to rename the Linked Server?

The following is the code that I am using right now:

USE [master]
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
    @server = N'Machine123Instance456',
    @srvproduct=N'SQL Server' ;
GO
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Machine123Instance456', 'false', NULL, 'username', 'password'

Access 2000 Linked To SQL 7

Apr 26, 2000

Are there any documented bug/incompatiblities with Access 2000 linked to SQL 7?

I have an Access form that is used to do data entry to SQL7. In Access 97 the forms worked great, but now in Access 2000, if a user pastes plain text into a field, when they save the record all the text is converted to questions marks.

Linked Server (SQL 2000 To SQL 6.5)

Jan 4, 2004

Hi,

I am trying to setup up a linked server using 'sp_addlinkedserver'. The host server is a SQL 2000 and the remote server is SQL 6.5. Both the servers are on the same domain.

When the system stored procedure is run, enterprise manager shows the name of the linked server but there are no tables.

I get error 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied' when trying to run query against a database on the remote server.

Does SQL server 6.5 support linked servers?

Please help,

Sql Server 2000 Linked Server To Access 97/2000 Incompatability

Jul 20, 2005

We are experiencing a problem with Sql Server 2000 linking to anAccess 97 file. We have two machines that link to this .mdb file, andwe recently upgraded one to newer hardware, SP3a, MDAC 2.8, etc. Thelink on this upgraded machine no longer works, giving this message:Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.[OLE/DB provider returned message: Cannot open a database created witha previous version of your application.]OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ].The link on the older machine still works. We decided to tryconverting a copy of the file to Access 2000 to see if the newerpatches/drivers/whatever no longer supported 97. We set up a link onboth machines to this file, and they both work. However, on theupgraded machine, the following error is receievedServer: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.[OLE/DB provider returned message: System resource exceeded.]OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'ICommandText::Execute returned 0x80004005: ].when making 1-3 connections to the the linked server, while the oldermachine supports at least 7 simultaneous queries connecting to thelinked server and still hasn't produced that error.Does anyone have any idea if there is a known issue with linking toAccess 97/2000 files under MDAC 2.8, Jet 4.0, etc? Any light anyonecan shine on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Sql Server 2000 - Linked Servers

Jan 23, 2001

I'm working with SQL Server 2000 installed in Windows 2000. When i tried to add the 'servername' as a linked server , i got the following message:

" Error: 15038. The Server 'servername' already exists."

When i execute "sp_linkedservers" , i could see the name "servername" in the list. But before doing this i had Restored the "MSDB" database on this server. Should i use "sp_droplinkedservers" and add them again.

Any comments are most welcome.

Thanks, Santha.

Can Express Be Linked With 2000 Standard?

May 2, 2008

I'm considering upgrading from MSDE 2000 to Express 2005.
Before I do that I need to know if my linked server dependant
scheduled jobs will continue to function properly.

Here's my current configuration:

I have a local SQL Server 2000 Standard edition box linked via IP address to a remote MSDE 2000 SQL Server. This link
uses SQL authentication.

I want to upgrade the remote MSDE server to 2005 Express. Will my local 2000 SQL Server link successfully with a 2005 Express server?

Also, I have 2000 Developer Edition on my machine and am using Enterprise Manager where I have registered the remote MSDE so I can easily manage the server. Will I be able to register a 2005 Express server or will I need to upgrade my developer machine to 2005? If I do upgrade my developer machine, will I still be able to register the 2000 Standard Sql Server?

If there are any other issues with running a mixed environment like the one described here, please speak up! I want to make an informed
decision.

Thanks so much for your help!

Update Field Using Value From Linked 2000 Sql Data

Jul 11, 2007

I'm trying to update a field (tmpRequestID) in a SQL Express table (tblTSubRequest) using a value in a SQL 2000 database field (fldtmpRequestID) in the dbo.NewPurchase table.

The procedure I thought would work is:
USE [tempPurchase]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[UpdateSubfldRequestID] Script Date: 07/11/2007 15:01:51 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[UpdateSubfldRequestID]
AS
BEGIN
-- Insert statements for procedure here
UPDATE tblTSubRequest
SET tmpRequestID = tblRequest.fldRequestID
FROM tblTSubRequest INNER JOIN
[NGTXA4-RSMSZ-01].NewPurchase.dbo.tblRequest ON tblTSubRequest.fldRequestID = tblRequest.fldRequestID
WHERE (tblRequest.fldUpdateCode = 99)
END

It appears that the procedure cannot read the field value on the 2000 server and the 2000 server is linked to the 2005 express edition.

Linked Server&txt In SQL 2000 And SQL 2005 Issues

Mar 7, 2008

Hi Guys,

I am trying to Query text file into SQL Server 2005 using linked server.
In SQL Server 2000 here is what I have.
Linked server configured to use following parameters
Product Name : Customer_file
Provider Name: Customer_File ( System DSN)

Here is basic file

0000003700 0000XXXXXX XX14 61J 1154-06-249
0000008600 0000XXXX11 YY17 41F 1144-12-309

0000038700 0000H13344 B120 8RF 1157-05-211

Now when I EXECUTE following command.
select * from openquery (TEST, 'select f1,f2,f3,f4,f5 from t#txt');
I normally get formatted output in columns..

As soon as I setup the same Linked server in SQL Server 2005, and follow same process I get all data in one column with first line as header.

I am basically concerting old import process into new one..so trying to figure out what i am missing?

Anay help?

Sql 2005 To Sql 2000 Linked Servers Problem.

Jul 25, 2006

We have two sql servers using Windows authentication. One is sql 2000 the other sql 2005. When logged in as "sa", I can link these servers and run a SELECT distributed query without any problem.

But when one of our developers runs the same query (he is "dbo" of each database on each of the servers) he gets the error:

"OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server <Servername> returned message "Communication Link Failure"
...
Login failed for user '(null'). reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection"

Despite that, I, as "sa" equivalent, have no problem so it appears to be a permisisons issue. Any ideas what is going on here?

Another 2005 X64 To 2000 X32 Linked Server Problem

Aug 31, 2007

Hello,
I have been searching the archives for information on problems that occur with creating a linked server to SQL Server 2000 from SQL Server 2005 x64, but the problem I am having seems to be slightly different.

I was able to create the linked server from the 2005 server this way;

Exec sp_addlinkedserver
@Server = '2kServer',
@srvproduct = 'SQL Server'

I was able to add the login this way;

Exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
@rmtsrvname = '2kServer',
@useself='False',
@locallogin='domaincdun2',
@rmtuser='domaincdun2',
@rmtpassword='pswd'

I receive 'Command(s) completed successfully' for both. When I attempt to run either of the following queries from a connection to the 2005 server in Management Studio;

select top 100 * from 2kServer.database.dbo.table
select * from Openquery(2kServer,'select top 10 * from database.dbo.table')

I get the following error

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "2kServer" returned message "Communication link failure".
Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 0
Login failed for user 'domaincdun2'.

I've seen a couple of ideas on this. One states the following;
***************************************
When running 4 part reference query like this:
select * from sql2000.mybase.dbo.mytable

SQL Server 2005 x64 runs the following query on remote SQL2000 server:
exec [mybase]..sp_tables_info_rowset_64 N'mytable', N'dbo', NULL

Unfortunately there is no such a proc on SQL2k. However, sp_tables_info_rowset exists and does the same thing. The solution is to create wrapper on master database like this:

create procedure sp_tables_info_rowset_64
@table_name sysname,
@table_schema sysname = null,
@table_type nvarchar(255) = null
as
declare @Result int set @Result = 0
exec @Result = sp_tables_info_rowset @table_name, @table_schema, @table_type

And then everything works fine. If you don't want to create "Microsoft like" objects on master database, use openquery instead of 4 part reference.
**************************************
I put this proc on the 2kServer and tried again, but I got the same error. I've also seen this:

I went into the Sql Server Configuration Manager, Sql Native Client
Configuration -> Protocols and disabled Shared Memory and made the TCP/IP
protocol #1 in order. Then just restarted the Sql Service and it all started
working!

I don't have access to the server to do this, but I wonder if it would solve the problem. I am a sys admin on both servers. The servers are in two different domains. Could this be a firewall issue?

Thank you for your help!

Cannot Connect To 2000 From 2005 Via Linked Server

Dec 29, 2006

Interesting issue.. I think

I have 2 linked servers on my dev 2005 instance (sp1-win 2003). My 2005 instance shares the physical server with a 2000 instance. This linked server works fine. The second linked server is on a separate server running sql 2000 sp3. I cannot connect to this server at all. I can connect the other way -- from the 2000 to the 2005. I have tried all kinds of combinations of security and options but nothing works. The only resolutions I have found referenced installing Management Studio on the 2000 server or creating an ODBC connection from the 2005 instance. Any ideas???

Here is the error I get:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "ALLFLDB6" returned message "Login timeout expired".

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "ALLFLDB6" returned message "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.".

Msg 10061, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Test Linked Server Connection SQL 2000

Feb 27, 2007

I€™m trying to resolve an issue and wonder if anybody has ever run into and possibly had a resolution for.

I wrote a custom conflict resolvers to manage data at the column level. What I needed to do to achieve this was to use a remote query to the mobile subscriber that raised the conflict. I€™m trying to put in a rule that if there are any issues connecting to the subscriber I want to use the default conflict resolver and move forward. Here is my issue, it seems there is no way I can test a connection without getting a critical error that I can€™t seem to trap. Example

I was trying to do

Select * from [linkedserver].[database].[dbo].[incident]
If @@error <> 0
use default conflict resolver

What I did to test this was I changed the linked server authentication to an incorrect password to get the following error that there is no way to trap.

Server: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Login failed for user 'sa'.

Does anybody have an idea how to trap this? In SQL 2005 there is a stored procedure

sp_testlinkedserver to handle this but I need this to work in SQL 2000 also, it seems many people have ran into this issue on the web and I tried to get the one where sqldmo is used to test connection but that will not work since I wont always know the password. I would like to just check the @@error value after trying to run a remote query.

Thank you,
Pauly C

IDENTITY Column In SQL 2000 And Linked Tables In MS Access

When installing the application the *mdb file is copied over to the C drive and an ODBC connection is written to the registry.
The application is used by many in the company.
We have problems on tables defined with IDENTITY columns. Can this be our problem and how can we solve it?

MS Access Linked Tables To SQL Server 2000 Slow On Vista

Mar 13, 2007

I am using two almost idential laptops, one with XP and one with Vista, the only differences is that the XP laptop has 1G of RAM and running Office XP and the Vista has 2G RAM and is running Office 2007.

I have a MS Access database that has linked tables to a SQL Server 2000 database. The performance of the Access database on Vista is 5-10 times slower on the Vista machine. Just flipping through records or opening forms can take 5 - 15 seconds on the Vista machine while the XP machine takes 1 sec or less.

What gives? I looked at the CPU performance and the network performance while the Access database was busy flipping through records, the network traffic was < 2% and the CPU would spike to 40% on one of the CPUs (dual core) but would remain under 5% most of the time.

I also previously had Office XP installed on the Vista machine and it had the same performance issue so bought and install Office 2007 on the Vista machine and it did not solve the problem.

It seems that Vista is doing something that is slowing down Access with linked tables. Is this a issue between Vista and using an ODBC connection to SQL Server?

Thanks in advance for any help on this

Bad Performance In Queries With Jet4.0 And Linked ODBC-tables To SQL-Server 2000

Updating Sql Database From Linked Access Database

Jul 1, 2004

I got thrown into a new project that is going to require me to update an SQL server database tables from an Access table on the backend of an Oracle database on another server. At the end of each day the Access dabase will be updated from the Oracle database.

What I need to do, is when the Access database is updated I need to have the table in the SQL database automaticaly updated. When a new record is added to the Access table I need the new record added to the SQL table. When a record is deleted in the Access table I need to keep that record in the SQL table and set a field to a value (such as 0). And when a record is updated in Access, have it updated in SQL.

Needless to say this is a bit out of my area and not sure how to accomplish this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Distributed Query From SS 2000 To Access Catalog Views On SS 2005 Via Linked Server

Aug 24, 2006

I am trying to write some admin only procedures which will collect information to one of my development server from other production and development servers.

I have created linked servers to access these other servers on the development server. This development server is SQL Server 2000 EE. Other servers which I want to access are 2000 and 2005 (vaious editions)

E.g I have another development server called PRODTEST which is SQL Server 2005 and on the development server I have created a linked server pointing to PRODTEST called TESTLINKSRV. I want to access new object catalog view (as I do not want to use sysobjects)

When I run the following query

SELECT * FROM [TESTLINKSRV].[DBNAME].[sys].[objects]

I get following error,

OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error:  OLE DB provider does not contain the table: ProviderName=' TESTLINKSRV ', TableName='" DBNAME "."sys"."objects"'].

Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

OLE DB provider ' TESTLINKSRV ' does not contain table '"DBNAME"."sys"."objects"'.  The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.

So I try this query

SELECT * FROM [TESTLINKSRV].[DBNAME].[sys.objects]

and I get following error

Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Invalid object name TESTLINKSRV.DBNAME.sys.objects'.

So bottom line is how do I access catalog views on a 2005 server from a 2000 server using linked server?

I hope someone understands what I am trying to achieve. Please let me know what is it that I am doing wrong.
Thank you

Foreign Keys From A Linked Database?

Apr 23, 2002

Hello!

I am Paolo, a 3rd year college student taking up computer science. I am currently doing a project as part of my on the job training but am stumped! Maybe you can help! ;)

software used:
Sql Server 2000

The facts:
1. there is a CARS database on server 1 (carId, carDescription)
2. there is an issues and problems tracking database on server 2 (problemId, problemDescription)
3. I am supposed to extend the functionality of the issues and problems tracking database to include the cars. i.e. the database on server 2 should look like: (problemID, problemDescription, carId)

The question:
Is there a way i can put a foreign key constraint on server2's carID so that i can only input carIDs which are in the CARS table on server1?

The only way i can think of is to make a new table in server1 and just drag a froeign key relationship in enterprise manager's designer, but my boss doesnt want to keep both information on the same db!

Any ideas?
Many thanks!

Create (U)SP In Database On Linked Server

Aug 1, 2006

Hi,
I'm using a couple of linked servers.
I want to create a stored procedure on all of the linked servers in a database with a name which exists on all of the linked servers.
For executing SQL on all of the linked servers I'm using:

declare @x int
declare @dbname varchar(500)
declare @SQL nvarchar(600)
set @x = 1
create table #databases (ID int IDENTITY,name varchar(500))
insert #databases select instancelongname from instances
while @x <= (select max(id) from #databases)
begin
select @dbname = name from #databases where id = @x
select @SQL='blabla bla bla create PROCEDURE [dbo].[usp_xxxx]'
execute @SQL
set @x = @x + 1
end
drop table #databases

Is it possible to use a ‘create procedure’ in this construction?
Can anybody give me some help how to create a proper syntax for it?

Any help is kindly appreciated!
