Loading BLOB's To Database
Aug 28, 2006
I have the file with binary data on my hard disk.
Also I have the table in the database with image field.
I want to load binary data from file to this field. Does any body know how can i do it?
I want to do it using only T-SQL, without any С# (etc.) coding - only sql script is properly.

Hi all,
I have a replicated table with a column which is used to store sound files - it is of type varbinary(MAX).
What is the best way to store a file from the filesystem inside this column on the PDA side (i.e. inside SQL Server CE) without loading the whole file into the PDA's memory, i.e. using some sort of buffering?
On full SQL Server 2005 I make use of UPDATE.WRITE() to save buffers inside the column - is there an alternative to this on SQL Server CE? Can anyone provide sample code / point me to samples that deal with SQL Server CE & BLOBs.
Thanks for your help!

I would like to extract a file from a database. The file is stored in a BLOB format
Can I extract the BLOB file from the database using an SQL code/command or is there another way in which I can extract the file?
The file is stored as a BLOB but is actually a ZIP file (if that makes any difference)
What is the normal method of extracting a BLOB file?

I was putting a database together (its a C# application MSSQL)  the application will handle a few hundred customers records and save  maybe a couple of thousand  word docs/images/other doc files wondered if the way to go was blob or filestream, I see the medium and larger databases seem to go for filestream but just wondered as not much mentioned about smaller dbs.I do not think  security/disk space/super fast access  will be a big issue.

We are debating what is industry “best practice for serving huge numbers of images in an industrial scale website. More directly, which approach produces the best performance and the best scalability? For example, how do sites like ebay, Amazon, and other large sites handle the millions or billions of images they must deal with?
Store as BLOB in sql server?
Store in /images folder and store url text into sql server?
We always assumed that the second approach is what most sites must do. But do they?
One developer on our team maintains that storing one million or more image files in a directory will most certainly result in poor performance, because the server must scan the directory, searching for the correct file, each time a web request is made. The directory is not indexed (?) so performance must eventually suffer.
Other developer counters that storing millions of images as BLOBs into sql server will result in poor performance and HUGE database. An additional layer of access (webserver to sql server, back to webserver, then to client) causes a delay and performance hit.
Who is right? What do the gurus as the world class sites do?

1. Is it possible and what would be the gotchas for taking a backup of a database in a 32 bit instance of sql server 2000 and loading it into a 64 bit instance of 2000? How about 2005 to 2005?
2. Is it possible to reverse that and go from a 64 bit to a 32 bit?
3. How about going from a 32 bit sql server 2000 into a 64 bit sql server 2005?
We're on the verge of upgrading a rather large database from sqlserver 2000 (32 bit) into 2005 (32 bit) but they anticipate eventually upgrading the hardware to 64 bit at least for production. The test node would remain at 32 bit.
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
I have just restored one of my databases. Now, that database is no longer available to me. It has been marked as 'Database(Loading)'
I have reviewed and tried the suggestions given from previous posts of this same question, and they have not been successful (i.e. 'RESTORE DATABASE DPeople WITH RECOVERY' as well as re-restoring the database).
Any suggestions?

I have to load a 4 level XML file into Relational Database.
1. The input xml file contains a DTD definition reference. (Its an external file)
2. When tried using an XML source it prompts to set the prohibitdtd setting to false on xmlreader - How to do this.
3. I have primary keys (identity columns) - which are foreign keys in the next level and these primary keys can be generated only once I insert the record into the table. - What would be the best approach for this kind of Data transformations.

I canceled a restore job, and now the database is marked (Loading). When I go to propertied it tells me "database can't be opened, it's in a middle of a restore" Yet from a Query window I can connect and run queries against that database. Should I just wait until it finishes "Loading" or should I re-start the server?
Thanks

P.S. please ignore the previous two messages posted with the same subject line. i inadvertently pressed post twice. sorry for the spam.

Hi,
I have a problem in restoring a Database. I have restored a database of size 25MB only onto a different database. This I have done through Query Analyzer not through Enterprise Manager. After restoration the database changed to Loading mode.
I thought it would take some time and change back to the normal mode. But in my case even after 24 hours database didnot change back to the normal mode. I am able to use database.
The following is the command executed through Query Analyzer,
RESTORE DATABASE Test
FROM disk ='c:mssql7ackuphrmdump.dat'
WITH REPLACE,
MOVE 'Test' TO 'c:mssql7datahrm.mdf',
MOVE 'Test_log' TO 'c:mssql7datahrm_log.ldf'
Can anyone help me please.
tks in advance,
Srinvasan Madhavan.

Greetings,
I am new at SQL and I have been asked to load some data into a database. I was given a file that has an extention .sql. shown below are the first few lines
quote:TRUNCATE TABLE henrylee.[HenryLee]
GO
INSERT INTO henrylee.[HenryLee] ( [custno], [company], [address1], [address2], [city], [state], [zip], [phone], [email] ) VALUES ( 'C00001', 'SUPREME NOVELTY', '5954 S PULASKI ROAD', '', 'CHICAGO', 'IL', '60629', '', '' )
several more rows after this
This looks to me like it was built to be scripted in or use some function of SQL to create and populate the table... does that make sense? Anyway, is there an easy way to insert this data into a table?
Thanks

I recently installed MSDE on a laptop. I then restored several databases from backup files without problem. However, one database is constantly stuck at the grey colour displaying the (Loading) message.
Why won't this database restore ? It is of course the most important database and I only have the one backup file.
This only appears to fail on his server. Do I need to uninstall MSDE and start over ?

I had to restore a database late this afternoon. I have the database set to FULL recovery. Database backups are performed nightly and transaction log backups are performed every other hour. I decided to perform a point-in-time restore. When I restored this way everything seems to go ok and it finishes. Then the database is grayed and says "Loading". Although I tried 4 separate times, one time allowing over an hour, the grayed out database and "Loading" never goes away.
Freaking out I deleted the "Loading" database (didn't delete logs and backup files) and tried a manual restore from the previous night's backup file. It attached and restored properly and was ready to go in 2 minutes.
Of course I wanted to get the transaction log files restored too, since it had work from earlier today. So I tried another restore via point-in-time and got the same old messages. Currently, the database is running with the previous night's backup restored but the users aren't too keen on having to do 5 hours worth of work to catch up to the previous transaction log backup come Monday morning.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
JB

Hi, there,
I have a Excel cross-tab (multilevel column) report that need to be loaded into a database table. Currently, I am using a Excel macro that convert the columns into rows before loading into the database table. I was thinking whether there is a better way of doing this perhaps in SSIS or using XML.
Any ideas greatly appeciated.
Thank you.

I dont know waht those error codes meanand I tried so many things already. The tables in the database are created correctly and also, SSIS can read the data from the database if I use the preview function, but somehow, the program never starts to write data into the database for some reason. I have had an application running successfully in production for two years. In the last three months the app has become a document management system as well. During the addition of images, it was decided that no images would be stored in the database but on the file system. We now have over 500,000 images averaging in size of 92k each. I had to upgraid the raid once and I can only assume that I will again. I am not expecting the image count to exceed 700,000 in the next 6 months; By this time next year, I am expecting 1.2 million.
Should I reconsider storing the images in the database?
If they are stored in the database, what are the effects on performance?
Thanks in Advance

Hi,One of our third-party software vendors is planning to implement BLOBin their database for storing certain documents. We are not toothrilled about it, since it can be a drain on our resources, but Iwould like to get the expert opinion out there on the pros and cons ofimplementing this. Also, the database is in Full recovery mode and we back up thetransaction log every 15 minutes. We also do a process similar to logshipping. We have two servers to which these transaction logs arerestored to periodically. What will the impact on the transaction logsdue to changes to the BLOB fields. If you could also point me to any resources that talks in detail aboutperformance, backup and recovery in relation to BLOB that would begreat. Thanks in advanceKR

Hi,
can anyone help ,me out here with some design consideration reguarding importing of BLOB data to a SQL server 2000 using T-SQL statements?
I want to make an import of some documents which are stored in a Access database, to an Ms SQL server 2000. The documents are stored in the access database as a OLE Object, by now I thought of using the base64String function to convert the data from the access field and write it to the T-SQL statements which will written in a text batch file. And then I apply the SQL Convert function something like:
INSERT INTO testBin VALUES(convert(image,'base64sting_encoded'))
go
Does this work? Is it correct what I am doing?
Thanks.
