How do I do that ?

How can I check if the database is currently being backed up?
Seems like that should be a property, but it's not an attribute of the DATABASEPROPERTY function.
Thanks

I was wondering if there was another method to determine when a database was last backed up without using the backup history tables in msdb? whether using DBCC DBINFO, DBCC PAGE on a specific database page...etc.
Also, when restoring a database, is there a trace flag you can use to force restore details to be written to the error log?

I backed up my transaction log file using this:
BACKUP LOG iTest2_AELetters TO DISK = N'nul'(yes I know this breaks the log chain - it's expected in this intance)
But after I run it my t log is exact same size. I have refreshed many times.
I am using SQL Always On on this DB.

I'm using an Execute SQL Task Editor to try and load the last load date into a user var. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I have result set to Single Row and a simple query:
SELECT LastLoad
FROM HeidtmanDW.dbo.CubeLoadStats
WHERE (SourceTable = 'Sales')
Where do I set the user var User:LastSalesLoadDate (which is scoped to the entire packge)?
Thanks.

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
why ?

Hi all,
I have set up a maintenance plan to backup my databases but when I view the maintenance plan history the transaction log backup steps have a success tick but a message saying :
"Backup can not be performed on this database. This sub task is ignored"
I have looked in my backup directory and only see *.BAK files and no *.TRN.
The transaction logs are supposed to back up at 1AM and the databases at 2AM
All my databases being backed up have the truncate log on checkpoint option set. Is this best practise according to my backup schedule ?
Help !!!!
Regards,
Tim

Coming from a (mostly) Oracle shop, I am unclear how SS transaction logswork as far as up to point of failure recovery goes.I have the few MSSQL databases I look after in full recovery mode, and Iset up maintenance plans to back these up online on a daily basis. Inthe research I did it was recommended backing up the transaction logs aswell on a frequent basis to ensure recovery to POF or point in time.I had assumed that they work like Oracles archive logs, in that oncethey are full they are archived to disk in case they are needed, toduplex destinations if need be. Does SS do this, or do I need to bebacking up transaction logs on an hourly (or shorter) basis? In lookingat enterprise manager I see that it does not look like the transactionlogs are archived anywhere, but overwritten once filled up, similar toOracle noarchivelog mode, in that if you lose your online redo logs oranyone of them has recycled since your last backup, then you can onlyrecover to the last good backup. Is this a correct assumption? Should I be backing up transaction logshourly to make sure I can have PIT or POF recovery?thanksTG

1. Is it possible and what would be the gotchas for taking a backup of a database in a 32 bit instance of sql server 2000 and loading it into a 64 bit instance of 2000? How about 2005 to 2005?
2. Is it possible to reverse that and go from a 64 bit to a 32 bit?
3. How about going from a 32 bit sql server 2000 into a 64 bit sql server 2005?
We're on the verge of upgrading a rather large database from sqlserver 2000 (32 bit) into 2005 (32 bit) but they anticipate eventually upgrading the hardware to 64 bit at least for production. The test node would remain at 32 bit.
Thanks for any help.

We use AlwaysOn availability groups, which has 2 SQL nodes configured (version: 11.0.3373.0), my full and differential backups are working for all my databases, however I am unable to perform any LOG backups.
I have double checked my Availability Group settings, and the backup preferences is set to: 'Prefer Secondary'
I've tried creating a maintenance job as well as using Ola Hallengren's maintenancescript job to back them up, but nothing is written to the drive. All jobs return successful every time, and take less then 3 seconds to run. There are no events being written in the SQL error log or event log.

Hi,
I have just restored one of my databases. Now, that database is no longer available to me. It has been marked as 'Database(Loading)'
I have reviewed and tried the suggestions given from previous posts of this same question, and they have not been successful (i.e. 'RESTORE DATABASE DPeople WITH RECOVERY' as well as re-restoring the database).
Any suggestions?

I have to load a 4 level XML file into Relational Database.
1. The input xml file contains a DTD definition reference. (Its an external file)
2. When tried using an XML source it prompts to set the prohibitdtd setting to false on xmlreader - How to do this.
3. I have primary keys (identity columns) - which are foreign keys in the next level and these primary keys can be generated only once I insert the record into the table. - What would be the best approach for this kind of Data transformations.

I canceled a restore job, and now the database is marked (Loading). When I go to propertied it tells me "database can't be opened, it's in a middle of a restore" Yet from a Query window I can connect and run queries against that database. Should I just wait until it finishes "Loading" or should I re-start the server?
Thanks

Hi,
I have a problem in restoring a Database. I have restored a database of size 25MB only onto a different database. This I have done through Query Analyzer not through Enterprise Manager. After restoration the database changed to Loading mode.
I thought it would take some time and change back to the normal mode. But in my case even after 24 hours database didnot change back to the normal mode. I am able to use database.
The following is the command executed through Query Analyzer,
RESTORE DATABASE Test
FROM disk ='c:mssql7ackuphrmdump.dat'
WITH REPLACE,
MOVE 'Test' TO 'c:mssql7datahrm.mdf',
MOVE 'Test_log' TO 'c:mssql7datahrm_log.ldf'
Can anyone help me please.
tks in advance,
Srinvasan Madhavan.

Greetings,
I am new at SQL and I have been asked to load some data into a database. I was given a file that has an extention .sql. shown below are the first few lines
quote:TRUNCATE TABLE henrylee.[HenryLee]
GO
INSERT INTO henrylee.[HenryLee] ( [custno], [company], [address1], [address2], [city], [state], [zip], [phone], [email] ) VALUES ( 'C00001', 'SUPREME NOVELTY', '5954 S PULASKI ROAD', '', 'CHICAGO', 'IL', '60629', '', '' )
several more rows after this
This looks to me like it was built to be scripted in or use some function of SQL to create and populate the table... does that make sense? Anyway, is there an easy way to insert this data into a table?
Thanks

I recently installed MSDE on a laptop. I then restored several databases from backup files without problem. However, one database is constantly stuck at the grey colour displaying the (Loading) message.
Why won't this database restore ? It is of course the most important database and I only have the one backup file.
This only appears to fail on his server. Do I need to uninstall MSDE and start over ?

I setup PowerPivot (PP) for SharePoint and activate it on few site collections in production environment; I upload a PP workbooks in a library, manage the data refresh schedules, run the data refresh for an external SQL databases, etc. Everything works fine for several days. One day we decide the move one of the site collections (X) from its current content database to its own (new) content db. The way we did it is that we took the site collection backup in production, restored it in test environment (in its own content db; we deleted the old site collection in test first before restoring), checked everything including PP data refreshes etc.; all worked fine. Then we did the same thing in production - we deleted the old site collection X, restored the site collection from the same backup file that we used in test environment, everything works fine EXCEPT the PowerPivot refreshes!! :-(
I am getting these errors: When I click on the workbook, it gives this error "An error occurred during an attempt to establish a connection to the external data source. The following connections failed to refresh: PowerPivot Data".When I click OK on error dialogbox, it opens the workbook fine but no slicers/refreshes work now. When I go back to the library and click on "Manage PowerPivot Data Refresh" to open the refresh history/schedule page, it gives this generic but scary error: "An unexpected error has occurred. Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation." ULSViewer or Event viewer is not showing anything related to this error!Strange thing is that PP refresh works fine in Test environment, as well as on other site collections in production that we didn't touch (which tells me there is nothing wrong with my PP configuration). Did the backup/restore in prd cause anything? Did moving it in its own contentdb cause anything? (But then why it works in test environment?) Is there anything wrong with site collection PP feature.

I had to restore a database late this afternoon. I have the database set to FULL recovery. Database backups are performed nightly and transaction log backups are performed every other hour. I decided to perform a point-in-time restore. When I restored this way everything seems to go ok and it finishes. Then the database is grayed and says "Loading". Although I tried 4 separate times, one time allowing over an hour, the grayed out database and "Loading" never goes away.
Freaking out I deleted the "Loading" database (didn't delete logs and backup files) and tried a manual restore from the previous night's backup file. It attached and restored properly and was ready to go in 2 minutes.
Of course I wanted to get the transaction log files restored too, since it had work from earlier today. So I tried another restore via point-in-time and got the same old messages. Currently, the database is running with the previous night's backup restored but the users aren't too keen on having to do 5 hours worth of work to catch up to the previous transaction log backup come Monday morning.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
JB
