We would like to use the SQL Server 2005 Express at our customers.
But now we have to meet the local security settings of the PC.
What is happening with the database users password (e.g. sa) when the "Maximum password age" in the "local security settings" for the password policy is to >0 (e.g. 30 days)?
Because this cause a frequently change of the passwords at the customers!!!!!!
I wanted to know if there is a way to enforce security settings on SQL 8 Server. Specifically password lengths, expiration,e tc. These servers run on a Windows Platform, so if it is not possible to enforce passwords at the database level can the windows passwords parameters be enforced for the server.
Also, how would I be able to find the last changes made to the tables within the database.
Hi, I wanted to know if there was any way of setting the SMTPAuthenticate in the RSReportServer.config file, so i could connect to a remote SMTP with username and password ?
I am using window 2003 system where smtp is not installed and i don't want to installed it.
If there is another way to change only in Rsreportserver.config file except pick up directory.
I installed the samples and tutoriales on the same server as SQL Server 2005 and VS 2005 Team Suite. Living in Belgium, the local settings are: language = Duch (Belgium) code page = 850 e.g. in the database samples (AdventureWorks database AdventureWorks Warehouse database) my date notation is: 26-12-2005 my number notation is: 1,0013016921998599
all demo samples and tutorials are developed using language = English (United States) code page 1252 e.g. in SampleCurrencyData.txt the date notation is: 12/26/2005 00:00:00 the number notation is: 1.0013016921998599
I do not have any problems to test the diferent services (Data Base Engine Services, Analysis Services, reporting & notifications services ..) but I do not succeed to deploy any samples of integration services !
e.g. for Integration Services Tutorial - lesson 1: Creating the Project and Basic Package? there are no error messages, 1097 rows are processed but, checking the result in the database, no data is updated in the FactCurrencyRate table of the AdventureWorksDW database !
Why? - is the problem related to the local language settings? how to solve this? - what is the influence of the code page ? is there any compatibility between 1252 and 850 as code page? - Server collation (e.g. Latin_1_General_CI_AS) is reported as key for the Unicode notation for character strings but what about notation of numbers? - when to use float data type DT_R4 or DT_R8? - I have remarked that the DT_DBTimeStamp is undependent from the source time notation Is this correct? - what is the difference between DT_Date and DT_DBDate or DT_DBTime, or DT_DBTimeStamp? - Is Integration Services dependant of the local settings of the database engine? - how to set / modify additional regional properties in a SSIS and SSRS package? - how to change the default setting of the Flat File Connection Manager [starting the wizard, the local setting for the language Dutch appears and this is OK for me but as codepage appears 1252 (ANSI Latin) and this is not OK as my server code page = 850]? - how to work with e.g. US based data as source and Belgium settings for reports?
Hi. I have a website and database using membership which is running successfully on my remote hosting server. When I go online, I can add a new member because my login page contains a login .NET component. Question: Is there anyway I can, as the adminstrator, manage the security settings for the members (delete members, define/assign roles etc.) on line? Or do I have to do it locally on my PC, and then update the remote database? (hopefully not...) Thanks in advance, Garrett
I'm having some problems with SQL Server 2005. I installed the Personal Starter kit but don't have the Express edition installed so I attached the .mdf file to SQL Server 2005. That's ok and I also changed the connection string to integrated security.<add name="Personal" connectionString="Data Source=MyTestServer;Initial Catalog=Personal;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>I tried setting the security settings in the Management studio under Security | Logins | BUILTINAdministrators where I select the User mapping and check the checkbox before the Personal.mdf file. But this doesn't seem to do the trick. How can I set the correct security settings?
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 (8.0.50727.42) and going into the menu option Website > ASP.Net Configuration, access the security tab and all I get is an error message stating that there is a problem with the selected data store "Unable to Connect to the SQL Server Database"
I have SQL Server 2005 (Express Edition). I have created a database "NetDev" with the right connection, etc.
I can use the SQL server fine for my Windows applications, but somehow this ASp.Net Configuration tool is not making any sense.
I also used the aspnet_regsql command from framework 2.0 to create a DataBase to no avail.
Does anyone out there knows if there is a bug with this tool???
Hi there, i have a test sql server. personal Edition Sp2. i loggoed on with a domain account that is part of local admin group. i was surprised when i found that i don't have enough access to work on the database like create and restore databases i tried to log on with sa but password not succeeded i don't remember that i had changed the password or put a difficult one. i also tried from the local administrator i also couldn't get the permission !! what could gone wrong ? thanks god its only a test server :S
Hi,I had this problem in version 7 and dont remneber How I solved it!!I have installed a local SQL Server (2000 aka version 8) on myWorksation (W2K), I have picked NT authuntication.Everything was fine untill I changed my password. Now SQL server cannot start because it fails to login. The old password is embeddedsomwhere and I cant egt to it!!!My workstation is on a network, so the password is my networkpassword.Everythinng is MS on our network.Any help would be appreciated.ThanksFardad
We are wanting to change the SA password on one of our Sql server 2012. My question is what are the implications? Will our agent jobs still run? SSIS packages still run under agent jobs? Is there a proper way/how to change SA password?
Hello, In NT MS suggests putting global groups into local groups and then assigning object permissions to those local groups in NTFS. I was wondering if this pattern should be followed in SQL server when assigning permissions to integrated login accounts. Is it better to use global groups or local groups?
We have a SQL 2005 server that is running our website and is accessed by our staff to run some applications (VB and Access 2003). The SQL 2005 server is at an off-site datacenter, so all access is via VPN.
We have one individual who is recieves the The Local Security Authority Cannot Be Contacted error whenever we try to create an ODBC connection to the SQL server. If the user is in our office, his computer connects fine, when he connects via an IPSEC VPN (we have tried various connections DSL, Cable and EVDO as well as Starbucks) he gets the same error. The error is sporadic, though recently it appears 80-90 percent of the time.
More info
When he is connected to the VPN, he can ping the SQL and exchange servers, as well as any of our other servers. The issue started when he got a new computer. The computer is less than a year old, was mine previously. Hard drive was wiped and reloaded with XP Pro, 2.6 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 100GB hard drive with 70% free space. When he connects to the VPN, he loses access to the exchange server, when he is not connected to the VPN, he accesses exchange via Outlook 2003 via RPC over HTTPS without an issue. When he disconects from the VPN, his connection to exchange is returned.
Any help or pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
This is regarding general protection of a database hosted on a network. I am developing a database application for my college library using VB.NET, that will reside on a network. For some reasons, I did not want to hardcode the Database location in the application. Instead, when a user logs in, he can choose the database location using a folder browser control, if the location has changed.
Now, I realize that for this, I have to put the database in a shared folder, which makes it quite vulnerable. Having pondered over the problem for sometime, a solution that comes to my mind is to place a Text file in the same shared folder that always contains the correct path of the database. When a user chooses that folder, I will read the actual path of the database from the text file, and move the database to a non-shared folder. I haven't yet implemented this approach, but felt it better to consult someone before. So, would this approach work, and is it a good idea. For information purposes, I consider it important to mention that the database is in MS Access. I know this is not a place for discussing it, but this is a general security concern. So, I thought people would not mind answering it....
I have verified that the following services ARE running.SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)SQL Server Browser SQL Server VSS Writer. This one however will not start ... For some reason it starts then automatically turns off.SQL Server Agent (SQLEXPRESS).When I try to connect using my <machine name>/instanceĀ and Windows Authentication I get the following error ...
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)".The connection specified in the "Connect to Server" box was working perfectly fine before I upgraded. I thought it might have been my Norton 360 Premier but I uninstalled it.I AM having issues with the adapter frequently dropping the internet connection but I just disconnect and reconnect and that resolves itself. The other technique I tried was to replace the server name with the IP address ... <192.168.0.22>/Instance ... This actually seemed to find the SQL Server but rejected the Windows Authentication ...
"Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication." I have several databases on here and would hate to have to reinstall SQL Server and manually hook them back up.
Numerous articles (e.g., http://www.microsoft.com/sql/techinfo/administration/2000/security/securingsqlserver.asp, even one that I wrote, http://www.dbazine.com/sql/sql-articles/cook12) state that to secure SQL Server, the SQL Server services should not run as Local System. That advice is useful only if making the change is not overly disruptive or is even allowable. My two most recent clients have absolutely rigid password expiration policies that require all account passwords to be changed at regular intervals. Realistically, that makes a compelling case for running as Local System.
When I try to install SQL Server I get the follwing message when I click on the installation file :
A strong SA password is required for security reasons.
Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to readme
for more details. Setup will now exit.
I've checked the readme but can't really find any info on how to fix this. I don't know what password this SA password is nor how to change it. Can anyone help me out?
I have inherited a sql server and no one knows the SA password. Ā I cannot login with windows authentication even if the account is administrator of the machine.
Hello, I have a package that contains an ADO.NET connection mananger using an ODBC provider. There is a user name and password configured in the connection mananger. The connection is to a DB2 database.
I install the package on SSIS by setting the package ProtectionLevel to ServerStorage. I then save the package to the server using FileSave Copy of (package name), and save it to the server. I also set the protection level there to use server storage.
When I enable package configurations (SQL Server), the package fails when run by a Job. In the log, I get the following error message from the DataReader source that uses the connection manager:
****** System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException: ERROR [08001] [IBM][CLI Driver] SQL30082N Security processing failed with reason "3" ("PASSWORD MISSING"). SQLSTATE=08001 at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSConnectionManager90.AcquireConnection(Object pTransaction) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.DataReaderSourceAdapter.AcquireConnections(Object transaction) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostAcquireConnections(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper90 wrapper, Object transaction) **** The DataReader fails validation. When I disable package configurations, the Job executes the package without a problem. The server that the package runs on is 64 bit.
Why do I have this password problem when package configurations are enabled? The connection manager password is include in the package configurations.
hi i have created a username and a password in sqlserver 2000 from logins in Enterprise manager and i permit him to the database i need to connect to .. and i check all server roles for that user and i make sqlserver authentication for him with a password and then i goto the udl file to connect to that database using that user it fails !! and says
"login failed for that user 'myusername' reason not associated with a trusted sqlserver connection"
while i use NT integrated security it works well so how can i connect to sqlserver using a username and a password
We Ā have a situation whereĀ SSRS reports are using Testuser account to run the SSRS reports for every user who has access to these reports. Now developers need the password for this login Testuser to proceed with their ssrs reports development, but its sort of mess that no one has password ever saved. So in case is there a way it can be retrieved or what should be an alternative if password cannot be retrieved for that login, as i believe changing the password will break the reports using the current password?
I am experiencing the same problem, and I can't get the easy fix to work. I drop and create the DB's in between tests, so it is not related to having an old certificate in the DB, as in the case of Tilfried.
The situation is as follows:
DB1 owned by login1, has a user for login2; this DB is for the initiator
DB2 owned by login2, has a user for login1; this DB hosts the target
Both DB's have TRUSTWORTHY flag set to ON
Error in sys.transmission_queue: 'Error 916, State 3: The server principal "Login1" is not able to access the database "DB2" under the current security context.
Going on a limp, I decide to add a remote service binding in DB1, binding the user for Login2 to the target service, even though BOL explicitly states that this is only required for cross-server communications. This does change the situation - I still get an error, but a new message is sys.transmission_queue: "Dialog security is unavailable for this covnersation because there is no certificate bound to the database principal (Id: 5). Either create a certificate for the principal, or specify ENCRYPTION = OFF when beginning the conversation." I already know that the first option works, but I wanted to get the simple solution running. As for the second option, I doublechecked and the initiating procedure DOES already specify ENCRYPTION = OFF in the BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION command. My theory is that the remote service binding somehow forces SB to use encryption, but (a) that is not stated in the error message, and (b) if so, then how to get the messages sent over to the target service without using the binding?
==> EDIT: Just saw that you confirmed this theory in your last reply to Tlifried. So I am indeed back to having to find out how to get this to work without remote service binding - it should be possible, but how???
BTW, SELECT @@VERSION shows that I'm on build 3054, in case it matters.
Between all the errors in BOL and less than helpfull error messages produced by SB, I feel like I'm slowly losing my sanity. Please help!
I have some code I build 2 weeks ago which Iāve been running daily but itās suddenly stopped working with the following error.
āThe table "tbl_Intraday_Tmp" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limitā When I google this there seems to be a related to tables with vast numbers of columns.
My table tbl_Intraday_tmp is relatively small. It has 7 columns. 1 of varchar(5), 3 of decimal(9,3) and 2 of decimal(18,0). The bit Iām puzzled with is it was working and stopped.
I donāt recall changing anything but I wouldnāt rule that out. I āve inspected the source files and I donāt believe they have changed either.
SQL Server 2000 8.00.760 (SP3)I've been working on a test system and the following UDF worked fine.It runs in the "current" database, and references another database onthe same server called 127-SuperQuote.CREATE FUNCTION fnGetFormattedAddress(@WorkID int)RETURNS varchar(130)ASBEGINDECLARE@Address1 As varchar(50)@ReturnAddress As varchar(130)SELECT@Address1 = [127-SuperQuote].dbo.tblCompany.Address1FROM[Work] INNER JOIN[127-SuperQuote].dbo.tblCompany ON [Work].ClientID =[127-SuperQuote].dbo.tblCompany.CompanyIDWHERE[Work].WorkID = @WorkIDIF @Address1 IS NOT NULLSET @ReturnAddress = @ReturnAddress + @Address1 + CHAR(13)+ CHAR(10)RETURN @ReturnAddressENDSo now the system has gone live and it turns out that the live"SuperQuote" database is on a different server.I've linked the server and changed the function as below, but I get anerror both in QA and when checking Syntax in the UDF builder:The number name 'Zen.SuperQuote.dbo.tblCompany' contains more than themaximum number of prefixes. The maximum is 3.CREATE FUNCTION fnGetFormattedAddress(@WorkID int)RETURNS varchar(130)ASBEGINDECLARE@Address1 As varchar(50)@ReturnAddress As varchar(130)SELECT@Address1 = Zen.SuperQuote.dbo.tblCompany.Address1FROM[Work] INNER JOINZen.SuperQuote.dbo.tblCompany ON [Work].ClientID =Zen.SuperQuote.dbo.tblCompany.CompanyIDWHERE[Work].WorkID = @WorkIDIF @Address1 IS NOT NULLSET @ReturnAddress = @ReturnAddress + @Address1 + CHAR(13)+ CHAR(10)RETURN @ReturnAddressENDHow can I get round this? By the way, I've rather simplified thefunction to ease readability. Also, I haven't posted any DDL because Idon't think that's the problem!ThanksEdward
I have connected to Database using my credentials by checking remember password option. After few days I forgot my password. How can I recover the password as SQL remember it. Is there any way to recover my password instead of resetting it.
I have a package protected by a password - I am already unhappy that to get it to use the configuration file to change connection strings for the production servers I have had to hardcode the password into the config file - very insecure! However, the package now deploys correctly to the production server and will run from there OK, but NOT if scheduled as a SQL Server Agent Job. Thus is because however often I edit the command line to include the password after the DECRYPT switch (which it has prompted me for when I click on the command line tab), the Job Step will not retain it. If I open it up after I have edited it and closed it, the password has disappeared.
I know that if I run dtexec plus the code in the Command Line tab (with the password), the package runs OK.
This is driving me insane! I have read all the other posts and so I tried replacing the SSIS package step with a CmdExec step and pasting that code into there - then I get an OLEDB error..
The code I use is: DTEXEC /SQL "ImportRateMonitoringTables" /SERVER servername /DECRYPT password /CONFIGFILE "D:Microsoft SQL ServerSSISDeploymentsRateMonitoringImportTasksDeploymentImportRateMonitoringTables_Production.dtsConfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E
and I get
SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8000FFFF
although the same code executes perfectly from a command prompt.
Please does anyone have any experience with a similar problem and if so, how did you get round it?
We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.
Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.
I am receiving the following error message when attempting to create a new SQL Authenticated login id.
Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15119)
I have four servers all running SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP1. Of the four servers, only one received the above error message using the same TSQL below.
CREATE LOGIN TEST_LOGIN WITH PASSWORD = 'pvif9dal' MUST_CHANGE, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON
All four servers are in the same domain, which if I understand correctly, the password policies are therefore inherited at the OS level by the domain. The password being used is within the password policies of the domain.
I tried to install an ALLDATA database which run with SQL Server 2005 express edition. The data base fails to install becase of the following code that come up which is related to AS password requirement. The error that come up is:

I am trying to install this database in a network server operating under Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2. If anyone knows how to solve this problem, please let me.
I am facing a problem in connecting to the local database with server name as (local).
I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my machine. When I try to connect to the SQL server with the server name as SUNILKUMAR I am able to connect but when I try to connect to the same server with the server name as (local) I am not able to connect. SUNILKUMAR is my machine name and SQL server is running locally.
if anyone can help me what is the problem in this case it is highly appriciated.
