Locking A SQL Table For Specific Amount Of Time.
Feb 28, 2008
I am wondering if it€™s possible to lock a SQL table for specific amount of time, say 5 min.
There is a particular 'Phone' table on the database that should never get locked. Yet, during the development stages we have noticed that the table gets locked at time. The issue since has been resolved to the best of our ability, but, there is still a vague chance that the table can get locked due to the multiple jobs that query the table, when we go live.
If such a situation occurs, we just want to be able flip the switch that will send the server to the mirror mode and the previously mirrored database to become the principal.
So, I just want to recreate a situation by voluntarily locking the table.
Any help in this regard will be appreciated.

I have a table with 35,000 records in it. I want to update a value in column A for only the first 5000 records, leaving the value in Column A for the remaining 30,000 records as it is now. What would be the command I would use to update Column A for the first 5000 records.
Thanks,

I need to show the total amount of rows in a specific table?
The query is as follows:
As part of the planning process to expand the database that supports Northwind operations, the IT manager would like to know how many rows are currently in specific tables so that he can conduct capacity planning.
The results needed include two columns, TableName( containing all the tables in the database and Rows, which contain the total amount of all the rows per table).

So I have a job that shows active processes
INSERT INTO Query_results(login_name, total_elapsed_time, total_elapsed_time)
SELECT login_name, total_elapsed_time, total_elapsed_time FROM
sys.dm_exec_sessions
I need to then kill all sessions at 11:59pm then log all those that are killed. This is so I can schedule a job at that time, I have sessions that are blocking my job.

I have an application that allows users to "reserve" a certain time and location for practice sessions. I want them to look at a web form that shows which times are available and then allows them to select an open slot and then submit this form with some personal information. My problem is that as soon as they select an open slot, other users should see that this slot is no longer available. On the other hand, if someone selects an open slot and then takes too long to type in their personal information, I want it somehow to kick them out and re-open this slot back up.
I know that I can create a field called 'status' in my database that gets turn to something like 'pending' as soon as the first user clicks on an open slot, but how would I turn this field back to the 'open' state if the user took too long to enter their data?
Any help would be surely appreciated.
Cheers,
AzF

Hello!
I have a problem. I want to know if the time which is needed for creating an index increases proportional to the amount of rows. example: if creating an index on a table which 10.000 rows takes 15 seconds. does creating an index on a table with 20.000 rows take 30 seconds , 40.000 rows 60 seconds and so on...
or does it take longer like 10.000 rows 15 second, 20.000 rows 40 seconds, 40.000 rows 80 seconds.
thx for your help!!

I want to ship 500,000 aged transactions each night to an archive table and delete them from their source table in one or more logical units of work (LUW). Each row is approx 60 bytes and there is only one non clustered index on the source table presently.
I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of 3 alternatives. One of them would basically insert the non-aged rows into tempdb, ship the aged records, truncate the table and then insert the tempdb records back into their source all in the same LUW.
For this alternative, I'd at least like to turn off logging when the records get inserted into tempdb as I dont see any value in logging that part of the activity. Is this possible?

Is there a way ( using an included SSIS task rather than coding a script task) to detect whether a package has run longer than a specified period of time?
So I can send an email to operators notifying them that a job is taking longer than usual.

We have transactional replication running with a seperate publisher/distributor/subscriber. I want to add a couple of articles to the publication, and then initialise them. I have added the articles and run sp_refreshsubscriptions
I now want to refresh the subscriptions. I have selected not to lock the tables on the snaphot tab of the publication properties, but whenever I run the snapshot agent it locks the application solid! Its odd, as soon as I run the snaphot agent, the phones start ringing within minutes. The application is Great Plains and I have set the snapshot agent to run nightly anyway.
Is there any way I can run the snapshot agent during working hours to refresh this one article? Once I have successfully done this, I have a number of articles want to add - but I can't lock the tables when refreshing the initial snaphot.

I`m developing a library catalog in SQL server with a Cold Fusion front end, and I`m having some trouble with setting due dates for books when they get checked out. Most items in the library are due in a week, a month, etc., so it is easy to calculate the due date. However, we have a number of items that are due at the end of the working day.
So, I need to find a way to calculate "the next 5 PM", no matter what time of day it is, and store it in a datetime field? Any ideas?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi!I use SQL Server Express 2005 and would like that a trigger is fired automatically at a specific time. I have been developing a game which has a lot of periods with a start date and an end date. Every time a periode is finished the trigger should add new records for the next periode. The dates of the periodes are already setted at the beginning of the game. For example:periode startdate enddate1 23.08.2006, 15:00 24.08.2006, 17:002 24.08 .2006, 17:00 25.08.2006, 08:00and so onCan anyone help me how to do this? Thanks!

Ok, please pardon my complete ignorance; but I am extremely SQL challenged. I manage the server right now and I am the closest thing to a DBA at the moment with this server.
Here is the problem. I have a job that runs every hour and until last week it was running without any problems. Now, once a day it hangs, and I end up having to restart sql to get it to be functional again. I guess I could just kill the spid, but regardless, it's fails.
It doesn't happen at the same time each day. I thought it was from the backups doing a SQL backup job, but I eliminated that possibility. I can't find what is causing the problem, because the SQL logs just stop at the time that this happens. It's like some other job/query is running and taking all the sql server resources. But I can never catch it when it's happening and I have no event logs or SQL logs to go on.
Is there any query that I can run to find what happened around the specific time the job failed to run? I just need to find what process did what when this job stopped working.
Again, I apologize if my lack of SQL knowledge is making me ask dumb questions, but I am really lost.
Thanks in advanced!

I have a program that is automatically ran through a job. The program gets the most recent files that have been uploaded to a server. I would like to be able to query the database to see when the last time this job was ran successfully and set this date as the date to look for files newer than the last successful run date.
Could someone point me in the right direction to what tables this data is stored in on a 2005 SQL Server Database?

I have a table with AmountSold and AmountLeftWith. I have to buy from the customers until the amount bought =250,000.
The max that user can buy is 250,000 so customers 1-3 get left with 0 (AmountLeftWith ) and customer 4 with 577 (AmountLeftWith ) after the update as user couldn't buy the entire amount as it would have exceeded 250,000. Preferably the query should stop afterwards and not proceed to check the other customers.
--===== If the test table already exists, drop it
IF OBJECT_ID('TempDB..#tmpCustomerAmount','U') IS NOT NULL
DROP TABLE #tmpCustomerAmount
CREATE TABLE #tmpCustomerAmount (

I have a stored procedure that runs every 5 minutes. I have one block in the procedure that will only run if there are records in a temp table. In addition, I would like this block to run only if the current time is between 0 and 5 minutes past the hour or between 30 and 35 minutes past the hour.
Currently, my block looks like this:
IF OBJECT_ID('tempdb..#tmpClosedPOs') IS NOT NULL
BEGIN
I can get the current minutes of the current time by using:
Select DATEPART(MINUTE,GetDate())
I know that it should be simple, but I'm pretty new at Stored Procedures. How do I alter the IF statement to check for the time and only run the block if it's between the times I stated? I started to DECLARE @Minutes INT, but wasn't sure where to go from there.

This store procedure will get some executable queries from the select statement, the cursor will fetch each rows to execute the query and insert the queries into table_3 to mark as 'E'. Until 17:00, this store procedure will stop execute the queries and just get the queries from select statement insert into table_3 to mark as 'C'.
I don't know why the outputs in table_3 are quiet different than I think. This store procedure comes out with two exactly same queries and one marked as C and another marked as E.
CREATE PROCEDURE procedure1
AS
DECLARE cursor_1 CURSOR FOR
SELECT
'This is a executable query'
FROM table_1
DECLARE @table_2
[code]....

Hi,
we work with the Reporting Services of the Itanium Edition of SQL Server 2005. With some reports (only some) we have the problem that
very long time is needed for the processing of the report. I checked the ExecutionLog table in my Reportserver database and detected that
values in the column TimeDataRetrieval (TDR) or pretty slow, but them in the column TimeProcessing (TP) are very high.
Report1: TDR = 8304ms TP = 34377ms .
In other (most) reports the values are completely different
Report2: TDR 8336ms TP = 233ms
Now the most interesting thing: When I execute the same report on our test server which is a xeon machine (same data volume, no user workload)
I get the following results:
Report1: TDR = 5244ms TP = 11731ms
Report2: TDR = 4750ms TP = 163
The differences in TimeDataRetrieval (TDR) should be ok, because the machine is used by over 700 people
and so the response times of the Analysis Server database could differ.
Report1 and 2 do not differ too much in complexity. A few groupings, parameters and so on.
The Itanium machine is a 2 way dual core system with 16 Gigabyte RAM.
The Xeon machine is a 2 way xeon system with 8 Gigabyte RAM (32bit processors).
What is going on there? How could I optimize the TimeProcessing of Report1 on the Itanium machine? Which performance counters or tools should I use to go
deeper finding out where the problem is?

In C#, I can convert UTC time to a specific timezone using:
TimeZoneInfo localTimeZone = TimeZoneInfo.FindSystemTimeZoneById("Pacific Standard Time");
DateTime UTCTime = TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTimeToUtc(localTime, localTimeZone);
Is there any equivalent function in T-SQL (SQL Server 2014 / SQL Azure)?
Specifically, I want to be able to convert a time into UTC before inserting it into a table. Right now I am doing:
INSERT INTO Incident (IncidentDescription, dtOccurred)
VALUES (@IncidentDescription, DATEADD(hour, 8, @dtOccurred))
I don't want to hardcode "8" and I want it to adjust for daylight savings time (DST).Â
Is there any concise solution that does not require me to define SQL functions or have lookup tables? I also don't want to use the difference between GETDATE() and SYSUTCDATETIME(), because the timezone of my server is not my local timezone.

If we want to compare datetime vs a specific time what should we do?
i.e.  startdatetime                     specific time

I want to compare just time in startdatetime coloum vs a specific time i.e. 16:23 .
I convert startdatetime to (DT_DBTIME) after that i want to calculate just time difference. how can i do it?
i.e i want to calculate this two (DT_DBTIME) columns without any date ==> (16:23:00)-(00:03:19)

I'm creating a temporary table in a Sql 2005 stored procedure that contains the transaction amount entered in a period <= the period the user enters.
I can return that amount in my result set. But I also need to separate out by account the amounts just in the period = the period the user enters. There can be many entries or no entries in any period. I populate the temporary table this way:
SELECT
t.gl7accountsid,
a.accountnumber,
a.description,
a.category,
t.POSTDATE,
t.poststatus,
t.TRANSACTIONTYPE,
t.AMOUNT,
case
when t.transactiontype=2 then amount * (-1)
else amount
end as transamount,
t.ENCUMBRANCESTATUS,
t.gl7fiscalperiodsid
FROM
UrsinusCollege.dbo.gl7accounts a
join
ursinuscollege.dbo.gl7transactions t on
a.gl7accountsid=t.gl7accountsid
where
(t.gl7fiscalperiodsid >= 97
And
t.gl7fiscalperiodsid<=@FiscalPeriod_identifier)
And poststatus in (2,3)
and left(a.accountnumber,5) between '2-110' and '2-999'
And right(a.accountnumber,4) > 7149
And not(right(a.accountnumber,4)) in ('7171','7897')
order by a.accountnumber
Later I create a temporary table that contains budget information. I join these 2 temporary tables to produce my result set. But I don't know how to get the information for just one period. For example, if the user enters 99 as the FiscalPeriod_identifier, I need a separate field that contains only those amounts(if any) that were entered for each account in Period 99.
Can anyone help? It may be that I am not seeing the forest for the trees, but I can't figure it out.
Thanks very much.
Sue

I need to delete data from a particular table which has more than half a million records. The data needs to be deleted is more than 200,000 records from the table. What is the best way to delete the data from the table other than importing into a temporary table and performing the same operation?
Let me know if the strategy to be followed is okay.
1. Drop all the triggers
2. Drop all the indexes
3. Write a procedure with a loop setting ROWCOUNT to 1000 and delete the records. ( since if I try to delete all the rows it will give timeout error )
The above procedure will delete 1000 records for each batch inside the loop till it wipes out all the data for the specified condition.
4. Recreate Indexes and Triggers.
Please let me know if there are any other optimal solution.
Thanx,
Zombie
