Log Shipping Alert Firing For Database That No Longer Exists
Nov 8, 2006
I have an error 14421 (database has restore threshold for 45 minutes and has not restored in more than "so many" minutes)firing for a database that no longer exists. How can I remove this alert? I have other log shipping plans that are running and so I can't delete the Log shipping alert job.

I am receiving errors from a job that no longer exists. The databases created for this no longer exist also.
DATE/TIME: 4/6/2007 3:32:00 PM
DESCRIPTION: The log shipping secondary database LOG1.log_ship_test has restore threshold of 45 minutes and is out of sync. No restore was performed for 6004 minutes. Restored latency is 0 minutes. Check agent log and logshipping monitor information.
COMMENT: (None)
JOB RUN: (None)
I have gone into agent jobs and deleted those associated with it. I have also gone into the msdb database and deleted any lines associated with it in the log_shipping tables. But the errors keep coming. What do I need to do to clean this up?
Thanks

I created an alert (18453) to audit successful logins. After I was done with the alert I made I edited the alert 18453 to disable event log logging and then deleted the alert. My problem is that the alert is deleted but it continues to log to the SQL Server error log and the windows application log. I have tried restarting the SQL Server Agent and even had the server rebooted over the weekend. Has anyone else had this problem? Where is this configured and how can I disable it?

I have set up an alert in sql 7 for error #9002 (log file full) for a particular database. I have a job assigned to run when the alert fires. It appears that I have done everything 'by the book', but when I run an insert that causes the log file to fill... the alert does not fire. I have checked everything I can think of:
- the alert is enabled
- the 9002 message is being logged in the NT event log
- slq server agent is running
what am i missing?
thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

Hi all,
In SQL Server 2000 you could run the piece of code below, to enable the logging of a deadlock in the SQL Server error log. Which could then be used to fire an alert, and then kick of an Agent job to send an SMTP email alert.
Exec sp_altermessage 1205, 'WITH_LOG', 'true'
The error message logged was a nice simple one liner, like this:
Transaction (Process ID 57) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.
Now I work for a managed SQL Server company, and a large number of our clients used our alerting for deadlocking to tune their applications, or at a minimum to show them when something was wrong with the database due to sudden rise in the number of deadlocks.
However, in SQL Server 2005, the functionality for the sp_alertmessage procedure has been changed so that you can't update any message id less than 50,000. Which comes inline with the secure engine that Microsoft have designed.
But this now means you can no longer enable the logging for deadlock message ID 1205. Which in turn means no alerting can be enabled.
You can still log information by enabling the necessary trace flags, however that logs very verbose information about the deadlocking chain, which in turn can quickly blow the size of the error logs out.
What I would love to see is this functionality returned in SQL Server 2008, or at least an alternative so that only minimum information is logged initially for a deadlock, and alerting can be setup.
Also, for those of you who have read through the 2005 BOL, about deadlocking, although it states the following in the section on deadlocking:
"...The 1205 deadlock victim error records information about the threads and resources involved in a deadlock in the error log.€?
This isn't the case, unless you enable some trace flags, which as mentioned will give you a whole lot of information, which although is valuable, isn't ideal if you're wanting day to day deadlock tracking.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Have you struck this as well? Do you think this should be something that shouldn't have been removed from 2000?
Cheers,
Reece.

I don't know a lot about sql server so any help or suggestions would be great

I have a trigger on a table that just updates a last_modified_date and this works fine on our production server. Now I have to update some data and I do not want the trigger to fire. I cannot disable or drop the trigger because the productions systems needs the trigger. Anyone an idea of how to solve this problem?

Why does it take longer and longer for the same code to run very simply I have 8,0000,000 records I want to delete from a table . I have tried a few options
Option 1 a while loop which deletes 10,000 rows per loop starting from the earliest until it hits the cut of number I have set. THIS TOOK 5 HOURS
Option 2 created an SP which found the oldest 100,000 records then deleted them. If I run this SP manually it takes 30 €“ 60 secs. Which I thought was much better than above. So I put this SP in a while loop to run 80 odd times thinking the time it would take would be 80 mins a huge improvement.
But every time this SP is called it takes longer and longer (36,30,32,39,37,37,123,163,155,182€¦and so on(In seconds)).
All the sp is doing is as follows(8860000 is just to insure I don€™t delete to much). this sp is then called from in a while loop.
set @recnumber = (select top 1 recnumber from
(select top 100000 recnumber from TabletodeleteFROM where recnumber < 8860000
order by recnumber asc ) TabletodeleteFROM
order recnumber desc)
delete TabletodeleteFROM where recnumber < @recnumber
please help why is it taking longer and longer

Hello Everyone,
I am new to connecting to databases through java and in fact have not done much database programming although I am fairly good at SQL.
I have used the MS JDBC driver to connect to a MS SQL server database but I want to update my application every time a record is added to the database and or alert the user.
From what I have read, i assume that I can create a Trigger in java but how do I get my trigger to call a method / run java code?
Thanks for your time and Help
Martin.

Hello,
I'm creating a website for a student organization at my university. Basically, I have an Excel file with a list of contacts that the members of our organization need to be able to search on our website.
The only field that I need our members to be able to search is "contact location." So for example, a member might want to know if our organization has any contacts in Spain, so the member would type "spain" into the "contact location search" field" and would get results.
I really don't known where to turn... I need the easiest thing that would be manageable for a novice. It doesn't need to be an intense search function; just something to make the website functional (so it obviously needs to be uploadable to a server; the server has PHP capability...no idea if that has any relevance). I've been searching around all day and have come across potentials like PHP, SQL, XML, etc. but have no idea which way to turn... I have Office and Adobe Studio programs at my disposal.
Thank you all-powerful and all-knowing web gods! I owe you my deepest gratitude!

If I do partitioning on primary, automatically apply those changes on secondary db? if not, what is the way?

We have installed 2014 sql server on a stand alone VM and can create alerts without issue. We recently did a cluster install of 2014, and when trying to create alerts get the following error:
Msg 14262, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_verify_performance_condition, Line 52
The specified object_name ('Databases') does not exist.
Specifically, we are trying to create a database alert on percent log used that will kick off a job to back up the log.
We are on Windows 2012R2 o/s. In the drop downs in SSMS under alerts, we do not have all the options we have in the stand alone instance - they are not there. Is this a bug? Is there a CU?

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.

We have a user Training database that we would like to keep updated from our Production database. Users would make different modifications to the Training and Production databases. It is the user updates on the secondary that bother me and I have not seen anything that indicates Log Shipping would fail if new random records are added to both the secondary and primary.
Would Log Shipping be appropriate for this nightly update of Training from Production?
Thanks

In order to move from one data center to another, I am planning to use log shipping.
Lets say,
Current Data center - DC1
Current Server- S1
Current Database- DB1
New Data Center -DC2
New Server -S2
Now, on the New Server S2, I already restored DB1 as DB1 for QA testing. QA has to do some testing before we move from DC1 to DC2. In the mean time, I need to start log shipping from S1 to S2, so that we can fail-over to S2. Now since DB1 database is already present on S2, I can not use the same name. I will have to use some other name (say DB1_New).
I can not wait for QA to finish their testing. I have to start log shipping before that. When QA is done, I will delete the DB1.
So for this log shipping, -
Primary - S1- DB1
Secondary - S2 DB1_New
So when we fail-over, we will have the database name as DB1_New. But all the apps use the name DB1. So I will have to rename the database as DB1.
So want to know, will this renaming the database (DB1_New to DB1) cause any issues?
Anyone had similar experience?
Thanks

Hi
I'm looking at replicating our primary SQL server to a secondary offsite server (linked via 100Mb so effectively LAN speed). What are people's preference when deciding on a solution?
On the surface mirroring looks much better but having dug a little I've found it is recommended only 10 databases are mirrored per instance. That said, I've found a post from someone who is upto 58 databases mirrored. Are there similar limitations with log shipping?
Does anyone have any experience of mirroring and is using it in prefence to log shipping?
Our current recovery strategy is the classic restore the SQL dump from tape onto a rebuilt server so either method will be a vast improvement. None of our databases are mission critical that they need upto the second replication. 15 minute replication would be fine leading me to think that log shipping may be better given the possible limitations of mirroring
For recovery, I was considering amending the DNS records of the Database servers. Does anyone see any issues with this approach? I understand there is a automatic failure function if using mirror but this may require the application to be coded correctly?
Thanks in advance for any feedback
Robert

Hello All Database Mirroring Experts,
I'm interested in how Combining Log Shipping and Database Mirroring works when failover occurs.
From SQL BOL, it says:
"Topic: Database Mirroring and Log Shipping
...
To run in high-safety mode with automatic failover the mirroring
session is configured with an additional server instance known as the witness.
If the principal database is lost for any reason after the database is
synchronized and if the mirror server and witness can still communicate
with each other, automatic failover occurs. An automatic failover
causes mirror server to assume the principal role and bring its
database online as the principal database. For more information, see Automatic Failover
[ http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189590.aspx ] . If the log
shipping backup location is accessible to the new principal/primary
server, its backup jobs begin to ship log backups to that location. The
database mirroring synchronous mode guarantees that the log chain is
unaffected by a mirroring failover and that only valid log is restored.
The secondary servers continue to copy log backups without knowing that
a different server instance has become the primary server.
..."
Source: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187016(d=printer).aspx
Could anyone tell me that how the database mirroring synchronous mode guarantees that the log chain is
unaffected by a mirroring failover and that only valid log is restored?
Let me elaborate the situation (if anything I said is incorrect, please correct me )
Here is the time line of the failover happens:
------- tn-1 ---------- tn ---------- tf -------- tn+1 ---------------> t
----------------> t: the time line.
tn: the moment that the log shipping backup job and copy job is done for the transaction log obtained between the time interval tn-1 and tn.
tf: the moment that mirroring failover occurs in the database mirroring session.
the time interval between each tn and tn-1 are constant, say h seconds, for all n are positive integers.
Here is the question that I want to ask:
In database mirroring synchronous mode, it guarantees that all the committed transaction from the moment tn to tf is copied to the mirror database. All the transaction log backup for log shipping are done on the original principal before the moment tf. After the mirroring failover occurs at the moment tf, how the log shipping mechanism guarantees that the transaction log between the interval tn and tn+1 that can be unaffected by a mirroring failover?
That's the point that I interested in.
Thanks a lot,
Terence

Hi,
I'm wondering is there a command that I can use to check if a certain value exists in the database? Something that returns true or false perhaps?

Ok so that's simple, but how can I return a true or false if '1' is a value that exists in the db?

Can we switch database recovery model when log shipping is turned on ?
We want to switch from Full Recovery to Bulk Logged Recovery to make sure Bulk Insert operations during the after hours load process will have some performance gain.
Is there any possibility of loosing data ?

Good day to the people who's reading this post!
I have some trouble with shipping my transaction logs to the secondary database be it on
another server or within the same server to another database instance.
Im using SQL Server 2005 workGroup editions with Service Pack 2.
Here are the problems that i encountered.
I do hope someone has bumped into such a problem and willing to help me out.
I tried on 2 separate servers (not domain environment) and also between 2 separate instances
(which is supposed to be simple!) on
our development server,but was unsuccessful.
Between 2 separate instances on the development server -
No error after configuring Log shipping though.
The configuring went through and it was a success.
Transaction logs was backup every minute and it got copied over to the other folder.
But SQL Agent not doing its last job which is supposed to restore to the secondary database on
another instance. No errors given out in SQL Agent error log files.Anywhere else im supposed to
look to see if there are errors given out?
Both instances SQL Agent has the same log on username and password with Administartive rights
So what went wrong?
Between the 2 servers-
The transaction logs was backup every 1min on the primary server
but it didn't got copied over to to the secondary database.
- Error message given was:Error in restoring database to the secondary
database.Network path given could not be found. Can't open the AxTest.bak file.
(i am very sure i have type the correct network path, even have shared it out and i think the firewall
is blocking incoming traffic since unlike our development server,
which allows us to access when we use Start>Run and type in the ip address, user name
and password, the primary server will only tell me no network path was found)
I also believe it's because the SQL Agent on the secondary database server wasn't given
permission to access the primary database folder.
I've shared out the drive and folder on the secondary server and
even have allowed SQL Agent to read, write and modify on both servers.
For the primary and secondary SQL Agent,
I configure their log on to be the same user account name and password
which have administrative rights.
So what went wrong?
Isit really true that both servers have to be in domain environment before you can configure log
shipping,mirroring and replication?
Hope someone help me out of this predicament.Thank you in advance!
