Log-shipping Monitor Instance Authentication By Proxy Results In Errors
Oct 9, 2007
We have set-up log shipping in both our development and production environments. The difference between the two is that development is using SQL 2005 Developer Edition SP2 and production is using SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2. As well, the production environment runs using 64-bit 3-node failover cluster set-up for the source, whereas the development source server environment is 32-bit and not clustered. Also, our development environment destination/monitor instance is located within the same geographic location mapped to the same domain controller. The production environment destination/monitor instance is located off-site, and although is part of the same domain, uses a different domain controller which is synched-up with the primary domain controller used for the source server and entire development environment. Other than that, both environments run using Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition SP1.
Originally, both environments were configured to use Monitor connections "By impersonating the proxy account of the job (usually the SQL Server Agent service account of the server instance where the job runs)". This presented no problems in the development environment, but in the production environment, this results in the following error whenever the source server tries to update the monitor instance with the backup alert status:
Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. [CLIENT: XXX.XX.XX.XX]
This also results in the log-ship alert job falsely reporting that backup jobs are "out-of-synch", since the source server cannot write log information to the log ship tables on the destination/monitor instance.
Now, according to BOL, when choosing to impersonate the proxy account, this is supposed to default to the SQL Server Agent Service account, which in our systems (both development and production), is a Windows domain account with full administrator priviledges and a SQL system adminstrator on both source and destination/monitor instances.
Upon trying to open a case with Microsoft originally when we were running on SQL 2005 SP1, and spending several hours ensuring there were no duplicate SPNs and linked servers were properly configured, they had come to the conclusion that this was the result of a known SP1 issue (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925843), and would be solved by applying SP2. We are now running SP2 + hotfix (9.0.3152), but are still receiving this error.
The only way I have currently of fixing this issue is by changing the Monitor connection from authenticating via proxy account to using a SQL Server login account which has system admin priviledges.
I have limited knowledge of how security is applied across different domain controllers within the same domain. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I'm on a remote machine, meaning a computer not in the WSFC cluster, and I open SSMS 2014, point it to a SQL Instance, and open activity monitor:
1. I get all the panes and charts except % Processor Time.
2. Then, if I authenticate to the cluster's domain by mapping a drive with valid domain credentials, I'm free to put performance counters in the Perfmon - - - but SQL Activity Monitor shuts down with“The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server SQL-V01INSTANCE1..Activity monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state.Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the activity monitor.
Additional information: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))(Mscorlib)”
3. Of course, the Activity monitor can't be resumed via the context menu. Removing counters and closing the perfmon do not work. I dropped the mapped drive and rebooted the machine. That brought back 95% of the information in the Activity monitor.
4. Further experimentation showed that any mapping of drive shares present on the SQL Server to the computer running SSMS cut off functionality of the 'overview' pane in the remote machine's SQL Activity monitor -- the monitor that had been trying to watch the server offering the shares.

I have found endless articles online and tried a few different formats of the web.config file but i can not get SSRS authenticating through the proxy.
</runtime>
<system.net>
<defaultProxy enabled="true" useDefaultCredentials="true">
<proxy bypassonlocal="true" proxyaddress="http://PROXY:PORT"/>
</defaultProxy>
</system.net>
</configuration>
Is there a way to pass credentials in so we can specify which account to authenticate with?

Hello Experts,
I have a Report Server when i try to deploy my report on the same server and if i use the Fully Qualified Domain Name in my report path i get the below Error
TargetServerURL : http://jptoclq901.corpusers.net/ReportServer
Error : The request failed with HTTP Status 407 : Proxy Authentication Required (Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer)
but if i use the TargetServerURL as http://localhost/ReportServer, things do work fine. but company requirement is to use complete path.

I have SQL Server 2005 log shipping setup with primary/secondary configuration. I can confirm from the logs that log shipping is working without issue, however, reports generated from the monitor server show this message:
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK__#log_shipping_mo__3ABBDC91'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.#log_shipping_monitor'. The statement has been terminated.
There is nothing special about the configuration. Any ideas?

The above mentioned script by Ron Craig was put on the SWYNK site on 22 February 2002. When all the SQL Server scripts were moved from SWYNK to Jupiter, this article and scripts were lost. I have contacted Jupiter and they admit that it has been lost. If anyone has downloaded this article(prior to the move from SWYNK), please can you forward it to me. If Ron Craig should read this, please can you forward your article to me and ask Jupiter to put it back.

I have 4 sql 2000 servers. One is a the primary, one is a local stand-by, one a remote standby and one is a training server. WHen configuring which server should monitor log shipping I was torn between the local standby and the training. The training server which only has a few users if ever, might be used for some DTS tasks in the future for some B to B stuff. Based upon this I am leaning on the local standby to monitor. Anyone have an experience or input?
Thanks!
(No I can't buy any more servers)

I have set up log shipping between two servers with a third serving as a monitoring server. Recently the monitoring for the eight databases that I am log shipping began to indicate that everything was failing. Upon further inventigation of the log_shipping_monitor_history_detail tables on the prinary and secondary everthing appears to working properly but I have been unable to resyncronize the monitoring. I have attempted to use the stored procedure sp_refresh_log_shipping_monitor to no avail, it does not appear to do anything with respect to the data in the dbo.log_shipping_primary_databases and log_shipping_monitor_primary tables on the primary server or the log_shipping_monitor_secondary and dbo.log_shipping_secondary_databases tables on the secondary. I have also manually updated the records in these tables in an attempt to syncronize but after the next sucessful backup, copy and restore this monitoring data is not updating. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I am doing wrong or how I might rectify this situation.

At one of our client side a wired log shipping issues has come up.while monitoring those two server i noticed that although log-shipping report says both server are in sync, report displays information related to both backup and restore , it doesn't shows information related to copy that is when was last file copied and last file copy column is showed blank. Same is when i execute proc "sp_help_log_shipping_monitor" . I get same result ...
When i expand copy job history to analyse its what i found is although job has executed successfully , but in depth reading each steps says that no .trn file was copied .
My copy directory is at secondary server itself where .trn files are placed.And from this location itself files are begin restored.
SQL server and agent on both servers are run by same domain account ....

I have 2 SQL 2005 SP2 machines that i am configuring for log shipping. The primary machine has a large database on it that i want duplicated on another machine. I did a full backup and restore onto machine 2. I configured the log shipping per the BOL and white papers. Everything seams to work correctly except for the restore i get the following error:
The restore operation cannot proceed because the secondary database 'B' is not in NORECOVERY/STANDBY mode.
The jobs are copying the files correctly but i cannot get them restored. I am trying to leave the "B" database readable for reporting but that is all i need it for. Thanks in advance

im trying to measure the amount of CPU used in a backup and restore, using the SQL Server Databases: Backup Restore counter in Perfmon.
I can select The counter, but it does not let me select an instance database to monitor.
see image:
I have 3 instances on my machine, 2 sql 2005 and 1 sql 2008. why do these instances not appear? i dont know how to set up this monitoring.
if i type LOCALHOST or 127.0.0.1 in the "Select counters from computer" text box i can see all databases under my sql 2005 instances, but not the ones under the 2008 instances. I have disabled all sql server 2005 services and can confirm none of the sql 2008 instance databases are showing up.
this is a huge problem, especially for when i start stress testing sql server 2008 in preperation for upgrading.
anyone any ideas on why i cannot see sql server 2008 instances in perfmon? I have tried from a remote pc also with the same results.

Greetings:
When I script out my log shipping configuration from the GUI and subsequently drop the log shipping and try to recreate it with the created script, the backup and restore functions do not seem to be working; please see script below. Is there an additional step (or steps) that the SSMS GUI does not output when it creates the script for log shipping? I noticed in the GUI after I run the script that the destination folder for copied files is blank as well.
Example error from backup/restore job - Error: The path is not of a legal form.(mscorlib)

I have read all the posts regarding this error, but non-solve my problem as I had already addressed them.
I am setting up Merge Replication via the Web and I get this error when i try to sync. Let me give you some background.
I wrote a small windows test app to test merge replication, in which i am using RMO to accomplish the replication. This works. It syncs every time. I then copied the "sync" code from the winform application and created a Windows Service in which i placed "sync" code. The sync code did not change other than adding the additional following four lines:
_mergeAgent.InternetUrl = _internetURL;
_mergeAgent.InternetLogin = _internetLogin;
_mergeAgent.InternetPassword = _internetPassword;
_mergeAgent.InternetTimeout = _internetTimout;
where the internet url is https://ipaddress/virtualdirectory/replisapi.dll
I have been working with this for a while now trying to figure out why this works (on the same machine) in a winforms app but not through the web (via a windows service).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...

SQL Server 2012: Out of all the databases in the instance we have a requirement in which we need to maintain a high availability for the databases around (128). Our team believed log shipping will apt for this requirement but not sure on it's limitations, how many databases are allowed or supports this log shipping from a single instance.

I have built a site that uses form-based authentication. Am I correct in assuming that the users and passwords will be stored in the SQLServer database in the aspnetdb.mdf file? The website works great and the authentication works how I want it to. However, I've tried to copy over the file onto a remote machine. The first page is a login screen and this is displayed without any problems but as soon as I attempt to log in I get an error message of:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under
the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider:
SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance
Specified)I'm wondering if this is something to do with the fact I installed SQLServer Express edition on the remote machine. The website works no problem on the local machine in debug mode of Visual Studio 2005 (Professional Edition). I followed instructions to enable remote connections on SQLServer Express from a Microsoft support doc. If anybody can point me in the right direction I'll be very grateful as I've hit a wall here.

Scenario: a stored procedure is executed in database ABC. The procedure includes a MERGE statement with objects in the ABC and DEF databases. A Windows login is executing the procedure. Contained users is not enabled anywhere on the instance. And the user is not orphaned in either database, i.e. the login is associated to the user correctly by-sid in each one.
Of course, the Windows login must be authenticated to access database ABC, and authorized to execute the procedure. That is happening. Most of the time, so is the MERGE statement. But every once in a while we're seeing an odd "Network error code 0x2746 occurred while establishing a connection" message. The procedure has a TRY/CATCH retry loop around the MERGE statement, so it enters that loop. Re-read: the procedure is still running, the network error wasn't about the client connection executing the procedure. So what was it about?
Does that MERGE statement, accessing database DEF, require SQL to authenticate the Windows login again, because it's a different database (even though it's on the same instance, and was already authenticated for ABC)? There shouldn't be any other network activity involved in that phase of the execution. Plus, when the process had been using a SQL Server-authenticated login, this never happened.
But before I go blaming our DCs or network... I need to know, are they in fact involved here, or not? I believe they are, but... never had to care enough before to really know. I'm trying to stave off the "let's switch it back to a SQL login" demand that's sure to come soon, if I can't find an appropriate resolution to this.

I got the following error using either NT or SQL Login ('sa') that are sysadmin in my SQL 2005 instance:
Your Account information could not be verified for one or more instances. Ensure that you can connect to all the selected instances using the account information provided. To process further deselect the instances to which connectivity cannot be established.
However, I would login to SQL 2005 named instance, either NT or SQL login 'sa' without any problems to do anything I want because both are sysadmin.
<PS> Note that my default SQL instance in my local server is SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 named instance.

I have successfully implemented forms authentication, that means, I can access it from a web browser, get the login page, add my credentials and log on to Reporting Services.
But now I try to access reporting services Web service from a winforms app, doing something like this:
ReportingService _rs = new ReportingService();
_rs.LogonUser("myUsername", "myPassword", "");
_rs.Url = "http://myServer/ReportServer/ReportService.asmx";
CatalogItem[] items = _rs.ListChildren("/", true);
The first three lines works fine, but he last line (ListChildren) throws a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception. I have enabled remote error and looked in the RS log files, but nowhere I can find where this null-pointer exception occured.
Any idea about where to go from here?

We've devoted a resource to this today, but I have to believe it's something easy that we're overlooking. The scneario is that we have a production Web application that until last weekend had a SQL 2000 back end. This weekend we installed a new instance of SQL 2005 and everything works (we tested in a sandbox environment, but someone must not have load tested enough) and never saw these exceptions. So, after the upgrade we now receive 100's of thexe SQL excptions per day:A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. Hi
I could not able to find Forums in regards to 'Log Shipping' thats why posting this question in here. Appriciate if someone can provide me answers depends on their experience.
Can we switch database recovery model when log shipping is turned on ?
We want to switch from Full Recovery to Bulk Logged Recovery to make sure Bulk Insert operations during the after hours load process will have some performance gain.
Is there any possibility of loosing data ?
Thanks

Hi,
I 'm sure I am missing something obvious, hopefully someone could point it out. After a failover log shipping, I want to fail back to my inital Primary server database; however, my database is marked as loading. How can I mark it as normal?
I did the failover as follow:
I did a failover log shipping from the 2 server Sv1 (Primary) and Sv2 (Secondary) by doing the following
1) Stop the primary database by using sp_change_primary_role (Sv1)
2) Change the 2nd server to primary server by running sp_change_secondary_role (Sv2)
3) Change the monitor role by running sp-change_monitor_role (Sv2)
4) Resolve the log ins - (Sv2)
5) Now I want to fail back - I copy the TRN files to Sv1 - use SQL Ent to restore the database at point in time. The task is done; however, the database is still mark as loading. I could not use sp_dboption.
I appreciate any suggestion.
Thanks in advance

Hello,
(Using win2k, sqlserver2k, framework 1.1)
I have an fairly data-heavy application that uses Windows authentication (Trusted connection/aspnet account) to connect to Sql Server. The site uses IIS basic authentication.
On the dev server everything works fine but when I move to the live server things get strange and it starts to crawl along. (Pages load OK but then it just crawls as it loads the datagrids etc. Sometimes it brings back incomplete/incorrect data )
BUT When I use Sql Authentication to connect to Sql Server and there is no problem at all!
Ok, there is something obviously wrong with the live server (which is identical setup to dev)but I dont know where to start.
Any ideas??

Hi all,
I've got two applications which both have a database on my MS SQL 2000 server. The problem is, one application must use Windows Integrated Authentication (which it is currently using and cannot be changed) whilst the other application which I'm trying to configure must use a SQL password.
Since the server has already been configured to use Windows Integrated Authentication for the existing database and application, how do I configure the other database to use the SQL password?
Thanks.

Hi all,
My work is using a shared application
which accesses a MSSQL 2000 database. To access the application, the
folder on the Windows 2003 Server is shared and users can access the
folder through a shared drive.
For the application to access the
database, it uses an ODBC connection to the MSSQL server which
originally used the SA password.
We have recently switched to using
Windows Integrated Authentication because we believe it offers a
higher level of security. However the only way in which we have been
able to enable this is to add the windows users to the SQL server.
The problem with this is that the
application sets permissions for individual users on what records
they can see within the database. We have found that by adding the
windows users to the SQL Server, they can bypass the permissions the
set by the application by simply using any application that can use
an ODBC connection, such as Enterprise Manager, and see all the
database.
One way around this would be to set up
domains of users with access privileges to the tables which reflect
the permissions set by the application, and configuring a view of the
data so they may only see the records that they have permissions to.
However to do this would require a high administrative cost to ensure
that changes made in the application are reflected in the privileges
of the SQL server.
Instead, is there a way the SQL server
can authenticate that the ODBC connection is coming from the correct
application using Windows Integrated Authentication?
This would allow the applcation to
determine security, and stop users from connecting to the SQL server
using other applications.
Alternatively, can the SQL server,
using Windows Integrated Authentication, also ask the application to
supply a username and password?
Any help with this matter would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
