Log Shipping Best Method?? How To Initiate An Existing Plan?
Dec 16, 2005
My question is two fold. First, What is the best method for mirroring to a fail-over server? Replication has limits on tables that do not have key fields, and I am finding that Log Shipping is harder to work with.
I have set it up several times, and conducted tests with test databases, but when it fails, I get no indication as to why, and I also can find no way to re-initiate it (without deleting the maintenance plan and starting over). Which leads to my second question, is there a way to manually initiate a log shipping plan already defined?
Thanks in advance!

I have had log shipping set up for a month at a remote site. Created another server to failover to here locally that utilizes 512K line. Microsoft has a tab on the maint plan to add another server to the log shipping plan. Shut down all log shipping, moved full backup back here locally and created new database. Used tab to add new server to log shipping server and setup plan using this database. When log shipping starts up for this new server it fails. Error shows it is looking for the first log file that was sent over a month ago. Am I correct in assuming that the only way you can really add another log server is to do it at the same time? If so it's kind of stupid to have the tab to add the server. My log files are pushed over every 5 minutes, and I remove them after 1 week.

I have a process that restores a backup from a primary server to a backup server daily. When doing the restore, sometime it fails (for various reasons).
I have coded a job to Set offline, set online, an then do the restore:
RESTORE DATABASE [xxx] FROM DISK = N'D:Backup Stagingxxx.bak' WITH FILE = 1, NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10
Sometimes it fails to bring back online, other errors as well. Is there a reliable method of doing this?

Hey all-
I am working to establish a backup plan for SQL Server 2000. We are currently doing log shipping between servers.
A full backup once a week
transaction log backup every hour
We run a bulk deletion (delete * from table where date < ninetydays) which deletes 22,000 rows approximately. We are running in Full Recovery mode.
I wonder if there was anyway to improve my backup plan, preferably minimizing logging when the deletion takes place but still backup the data with log shipping.
Let me know if any of you have ideas. Thanks
Nate

My problem is the following: when I try to configure replication between two SQL servers, I get an error message even before I get a chance to configure anything. When I choose "Configuring publishing and subscribers" (in Enterprise Man.) I receive the following error message: "SQL Server Enterprise Manager could not complete the wizard because @@SERVERNAME is for " is NULL. Use sp_addserver to set @@SERVERNAME".
When I try to do this I get the message that the name already exists...
Something is obviously wrong with this server, but I can't pinpoint the problem, much less resolve it - I would very much appreciate any help!!

I am trying to initiate a Netbackup task from a SQL Job using the following CmdExec code:
"C:Program FilesVERITASNetBackupnindbbackex.exe" -f "C:Program FilesVeritasNetBackupDbExtMsSql<Filename.bch>" -p <profilename> -u <username> -pw <password> -s <server> -np
If I run it from a Command Prompt window it works fine, however if I copy the exact same code into a SQL Job and use the job type 'Operating System (CmdExec)' it fails to run. All I get in the Job History is: "Executed as user: DomainUsername. The step did not generate any output. Process Exit Code 2. The step failed."
I have managed to get this to work on another almost identical server using the same accounts and everything but for some reason it won't run on the one I'm currently using.

Hi guys,
I am new to SQL Server 2000 and like to enquire the following.
Scenario:
this current website is hosted by A but now taken over by B.
B was given SQL server username and password and was instructed to download the database directly from A based on the username n pw given.
So my qns is:
Is it possible to initiate data transfer from one server situated at locationA to another server at locationB that doesnt belong to the same domain? If can, by which ways? Using the DTS method? Or there are some settings to be configure at ODBC in order to initiate the data transfer?
Any experts out there? ;)

Hi
I could not able to find Forums in regards to 'Log Shipping' thats why posting this question in here. Appriciate if someone can provide me answers depends on their experience.
Can we switch database recovery model when log shipping is turned on ?
We want to switch from Full Recovery to Bulk Logged Recovery to make sure Bulk Insert operations during the after hours load process will have some performance gain.
Is there any possibility of loosing data ?
Thanks

I went to look at the connection string previously entered for a dataset created in a new report, and am not seeing anything intuitive for bringing up the associated datasource dialog box that was used to enter name, type and connection string. I'm also noticing nothing intuitive for deleting an existing dataset. How do you do these two very simple things in an existing project? I dont see the dataset in solution explorer, I see it only in the text box on the data tab and in a limited kind of way on the dataset view where the columns show and maint is allowed mostly on the columns only. I tried hilighting the dataset here and hitting the delete key to no avail.

Hi,
I 'm sure I am missing something obvious, hopefully someone could point it out. After a failover log shipping, I want to fail back to my inital Primary server database; however, my database is marked as loading. How can I mark it as normal?
I did the failover as follow:
I did a failover log shipping from the 2 server Sv1 (Primary) and Sv2 (Secondary) by doing the following
1) Stop the primary database by using sp_change_primary_role (Sv1)
2) Change the 2nd server to primary server by running sp_change_secondary_role (Sv2)
3) Change the monitor role by running sp-change_monitor_role (Sv2)
4) Resolve the log ins - (Sv2)
5) Now I want to fail back - I copy the TRN files to Sv1 - use SQL Ent to restore the database at point in time. The task is done; however, the database is still mark as loading. I could not use sp_dboption.
I appreciate any suggestion.
Thanks in advance

Hi All,
I would like to restore database using RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
If database exists already and has any open connections this command will fail.
I would like to close all existing connections to specific database before running RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
I can do closing from Management Studio using checkbox "Close Existing Connection" when deleting database. Actually I need to do the same but from script.
Please advice me how to do it.
Thanks in advance,

We have a debate in our team about embedded SQL vs. Stored Procs.
The argument is why use SP's if you can embed the SQL in the code and SQL2K will cache it on the fly?
I can't find any definitive information on pros and cons between the two methods.
If there are no major performance issues, or gotchas, I guess it comes down to developer preference.
SP Pros:
- Great SQL support in VS.NET (dev, debug, integration)
- Seperation of database specific code from middle tier.
- Less lines of code in middle tier
- VS.NET support for .xsd dataset definitions.
- Logic closer to data for more demanding processes.
Embedded SQL Pros:
- Less artifacts for version control
- Better encapsulation of logic
Any info would be appreciated.
thanks
Kevin

I am working on tuning the procedure cache hit ratio for my server. We haveadded 4 Gb of memory to the server, which has helped. In addition, I have runthe DBCC FREEPROCACHE, which helped for a couple of days to get the hit ratioup to about 84% (from 68%).When I use the performance monitor on the server and look at SQL Server CacheManager:Buffer Hit Ratio, I see that the Prepared SQL Plan is around 97%, butthe Procedure Plan hit ratio is down around 55%. I've done some research ondifferent tuning techniques, but can't seem to find 1. a clear definition ofthe difference between the prepared sql plan and the procedure plan and 2.other than adding memory and running dbcc freeprocache, how can I get theprocedure plan cache raised? I do know that there are some procedures thatneed to be modified to be called fully qualified (e.g. exec dbo.sp_###instead of exec sp_###), but I don't think that those will increase theprocedure plan by 30% or more.Any insight you can give would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,Michael--Message posted via SQLMonster.comhttp://www.sqlmonster.com/Uwe/Forum...eneral/200511/1

The benefit of the actual execution plan is that you can see the actual number of rows passing through each step - compared to the estimated number of rows.But what about the "cost percentages" ?I believe I've read somewhere that these percentages is still just an estimate and is not based on the real execution.Does anyone know this and preferable have a link to something that documents it?Thanks

is this the best and fastest method to connect to a database for DataGrid databind?
---------
Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionStringSQL"))
Dim MyCommand As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_BuddiesPendingSelect1", MyConnection)
MyCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@UserID", intUserID))
MyConnection.Open()
Dim dr As SqlDataReader = MyCommand.ExecuteReader()
DataList1.DataSource = dr
DataList1.DataBind()
dr.Close()
MyConnection.Close()

or should i use a DataAdapter and fill a DataSet and then attach the DataSet to the DataGrid?

I have been using VB6 for a long time now and had no problems using ADODB.Recordset.I had a module to which I would send my recordset (byref) and the SQL command (byval) and use the resultant recordset for adding, modifying or deleting records.How can I do the same with VS2005? This is a major problem as there are dataadapters, grids, datareaders etc.Does someone have a simple method to get the recordset so that I can modify the record using the code (eg: .Addnew/.Delete/.Update) and Close the connection?Please note that I do not need to display anything and have to run 40/50 AddModDel for every click of the program.Any help is greately appreciated. If you not familiar with it, the <a href="http://www.stephenforte.net/owdasblog/permalink.aspx?guid=2b0532fc-4318-4ac0-a405-15d6d813eeb8">Rozenshtein Method</a> uses SQL to create a crosstab. The concept is a stroke of genius but I'm having trouble getting it to work on one of production databases.
I successfully used the Northwind example explained at Stephen Forte's site (see the link above)...but no luck on my real world problems.
I can get the date statements to resolve to 0 correctly, but when I try to aggregate the data - the statements are turning into 1 multiplying the aggregate data for each cell...which fills in the same data across the entire row.
For example (the columns represent the time period),
GROUP T1 T2 T3 T4
group1 9 9 9 9
group2 3 3 3 3
group3 5 5 5 5
My sql code is:
SELECT dbo.tblHassBatch.ProdLine,
COUNT((dbo.tblHassUUT.UnitID)*(1-ABS(SIGN(datediff(dd,dbo.tblHassBatch.StartTime,ge tdate())-0)))) AS Today,
COUNT((dbo.tblHassUUT.UnitID)*(1-ABS(SIGN(datediff(ww,dbo.tblHassBatch.StartTime,ge tdate())-0)))) AS [This Week],
COUNT((dbo.tblHassUUT.UnitID)*(1-ABS(SIGN(datediff(mm,dbo.tblHassBatch.StartTime,ge tdate())-0)))) AS [This Month],
COUNT((dbo.tblHassUUT.UnitID)*(1-ABS(SIGN(datediff(mm,dbo.tblHassBatch.StartTime,ge tdate())-1)))) AS [Last Month]
FROM dbo.tblHassBatch INNER JOIN
dbo.tblHassUUT ON dbo.tblHassBatch.BatchID = dbo.tblHassUUT.BatchID
GROUP BY dbo.tblHassBatch.ProdLine
Am I overlooking something here? I'm pulling my hair out b/c if this works it's really going to provide a great solution for a project I'm working on...but I can't seem to figure it out.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex8675

I'm not really strong in SQL. My goal is to compare the beginning mileage of a vehicle record with it's previous ending mileage reading. I have something that works, but it feels clunky. I wonder if there is a better method, ie a join. Here's what I have:
SELECT A.Trolley_num, A.Date, A.Speedo_start, A.Speedo_end,
(SELECT B.Speedo_end FROM Daily_Trolley AS B
WHERE B.Trolley_num = A.Trolley_num
AND B.Date =
(SELECT Max(Date) FROM Daily_Trolley AS C WHERE C.Trolley_num = A.Trolley_num
And C.Date < '1/23/2005')) AS PrevSpeedoEnd
FROM Daily_Trolley AS A
WHERE A.Date='1/23/2005'
ps: I inherited this db; I'm aware that "Date" should not have been used as a field name.
